The layout of the place is great because their large oval bar area has seating all around, in addition to their regular tables. Items ordered: New Potatoes: Potatoes were a little over cooked, borderline burnty side. I felt like the seasoning on the potatoes could've been dispersed a little better. It was mostly on one side of each of the potatoes. The aioli dipping sauce was great, however the dish as a whole was just alright. Lechon Asada: Meat was tender, however it didn't have any interesting flavor. The yucca that comes with it was soft in some parts of each piece and hard at others, in an odd way. The dish as a whole could've been more flavorful. Steamed Black Mussels: The dish includes lots of mussels, all of which are perfectly cooked-- not too hard and not too soft. I like that the broth also includes diced tomatoes, which adds a nice texture and taste to the mussels. The broth in which it's made in is great, not too salty, and you could really taste it in the mussels themselves. The complimentary bread taste great dipped in this broth as well. Finally got to eat at Cha Cha Cha, an institution in a rapidly changing neighborhood. Long with a giant bar in the middle and exposed brick walls, it feels like it's been there forever. We sat at the bar rather than wait for a table and ordered drinks and tapas. We had the fried potatoes (I forgot what they're called but they're fantastic), the plantains and black beans -- my favorite, ceviche and a chicken curry empanada. Yes, it's one empanada but large enough to split in three's. The ceviche was pretty good with a very generous proportion and the empanada had a chicken stew type flavor, not a heavy curry. Light flaky crust! The drinks were okay, nothing to write home about, everything on a ton of ice so it kind of waters it all down. They definitely sound more interesting on the menu. It's super loud in there, especially on a busy night so it was hard to hear someone even if they're sitting right next to you. But the service was good at the bar, they were very attentive. This place use to be one of my fave restaurants in the city. Great for large groups or pre-gaming for the weekend. I can now say this place has took a complete 180 turn and is no longer the place I use to love. New ownership has ruined everything that was great about this place. What's even worse is that I meant the new owner when he bought the restaurant & explained why this place was so popular. The "Sangria" being one of the focal points. Telling him "whatever you do do not change the sangria" sure enough the first thing he did was swap out the wine that was previously used for a cheaper brand. Talk about hangover central. Cheap wine mixed with a ton of fruit is not the business. He also fired the great staff that existed before and replaced them with rude probably underpaid people. The main chef was also replaced and the food that was decent before is now disgusting. I went last night and ordered jerk chicken like I usually do and I was beyond disappointed. Chicken looked like it was steroids chicken leg bigger that hand, there was no flavor at all. I ate the rice and just couldn't even touch the rest. This was a great spot for Cuban food! We went on a Tuesday night, so at 7pm, a live band was doing a performance. It was an extremely nice ambience to be in to enjoy some delicious food. We decided to take a seat at the bar. Our server brought over some complimentary bread and butter to start off with. We decided to order: - Half pitcher of sangria - Platanos - BBQ Chicken quesadilla - fried calamari The food was delicious and at a good price! Not like anybody was raving about the place but more in a way of "oh I visited SF and stopped by cha cha cha's for sangrias". I had the paella, which was okay. I really wanted to try the ceviche but my sister doesn't have the best taste in food and was not in the mood for "cold" food. We also got the empanada and plantains - both of these were super good! They give you a lot of free bread which is always the best along with lots of butter. The chips that came with the ceviche were super yummy. We also ordered a pitcher of sangria - about $30 and it was more than enough for 4 people. You could probably split a pitcher between 5 people and have about 2 glasses per person. The atmosphere was very fun and vibrant. They played fun music! On a recent business trip, I took the advice of a colleague and stopped in for a later night dinner. Loved the vibe of the place with a giant bar with seating centered in the restaurant and booths along the wall. As noted in other reviews, service was prompt and friendly. I started off with the sangria and was not dissapointed. Perfectly balanced and packs a mean punch. This is the "order a pitcher and throw all your problems to the wind" kind of drink. For food, I went with the shisito peppers, cajun shrimp, and the lechon asado. Way too much food for one person but was starving and being from Wisconsin, I can take on whatever food is put in front of me. All 3 were excellent with the cajun shrimp being the clear standout. The shrimp were perfectly cooked and nestled in a spicy, rich and creamy sauce. They could absolutely bottle up the sauce and make a killing on it. Dipping the bread that accompanied the dish was heavenly. This is a must get if you go. Don't know when I will be back to the Bay area but when I do, the cajun shrimp will definitely be the on my list to come back to. read more

I had been drinking all day (starting at Lime's awesome mimosa brunch) with a bunch of friends including the guy I was just beginning to date. We then had headed to the Mint for some karaoke tunes. People seemed pretty sloppy for only 10 pm. Not that there's anything wrong with that. They're not in a long-term relationship and therefore more boring than Mormons. Boyfriend had the steak from the regular menu. The size was decent, but it was a little tough and overcooked. He liked the yucca it came with. I had the brochettes from the specials menu. It was fantastic, for the price. It was quite spicy and came with interesting, flavorful mashed potatoes and some broccoli. There were two skewers with four or five chunks of meat on each. The staff were all fantastic. Whether it was the bus boy waiting super patiently for my plate while I packaged my leftovers, or the waitress bringing us extra Tootsie Rolls when we mentioned liking them, each one we encountered did a little something special for us. And it isn't every evening that through a combination of the Nombe Elite event and Cha Cha Cha, that one gets to experience Izakaya-Cuban Fusion in the Mish'! I walked in and the bartender asked me what I wanted to drink. I told her I'll take a look and let her know. We ordered: Calamari ($8.00)- The calamaris' were recommended by a friend and it was really good. It was served with a lemon garlic aioli. Fried New Potatoes ($6.75) served with a chile pasilla aioli. It was crispy on the outside and soft in the inside. I didn't really like the aioli served with it though. It tasted kinda weird. Fried Platanos Maduros ($7.50) with sour cream drizzled over it. I haven't really tried any other platanos but this one was pretty damn good.. Pork Quesadilla ($8.25) with salsa, guacamole, and sour cream. This was the worst out of everything. I was the only one that ate it and I hated it. The shredded pork was way too dry and I don't like a quesadilla that is not cheesy inside. Spanish Rice and Black Beans ($6.25) with sour cream. It"s rice and beans.. you can't go wrong with that. Make sure to make a reservation because this place isn't overflowing with people for no reason. We were a table of 9. It was a little cramped but it totally worked out. Our server was awesome even though she was super busy. We ordered a few plates of: Fried Calamari, Jamaican Jerk Chicken, Black Mussels, Cajun Shrimp, Grilled Marinated Chicken Wings, Fried New Potatoes and Ceviche. We got lucky with parking and found one right in front of the restaurant. For a Monday night, Cha Cha Cha sure was packed! As C. C. stated below, they have the nicest host I've ever met! He (Patrick) was so friendly and had me looking forward to my meal here right when I stepped through the door! We were seated immediately at a table and decided to order a half pitcher of sangria to start. From all the pictures on Yelp, I assumed that the half pitcher would be large but, in reality, the pitcher is actually the length of a fork or napkin! Just a disclaimer for those who've never been here. I was a little disappointed but the sangria does pack a punch and will get you buzzed in no time! We had the Cajun Shrimp (highly recommended!), Mussels, and Chicken Wings. I'll rank them from favorite to least favorite: 1) Cajun Shrimp - the sauce was amazing but I expected more of a Cajun spice to it. No complaints though because the sauce went well with the unlimited bread you get. Next time, I'm ordering extra sauce! The sauce has a kind-of yogurt or butter consistency that's not really thick. 2) Chicken Wings - "not the best chicken wings I've had but they're pretty damn good" as my boyfriend said 3) Mussels - nothing special. I wouldn't order this again. Half-way through our first plate arrived, the host sat down next to us and politely asked us if we would consider moving our table because a group of 10 had just walked in. He even said that the restaurant would comp us dessert. I wouldn't have minded moving because of his nice and polite attitude for asking but the comp didn't hurt either! Plus, half-way through our dinner at our new table, the host just walked by our table nonchalantly and refilled our sangria! That's what I call excellent customer service! Our waitress was also extremely attentive and our bread basket was never empty! For dessert, we ordered the triple chocolate mousse cake - delicious! My only complaint was the raspberry sauce that was poured over it. I personally don't like raspberry sauce so I'll ask them to hold it next time. But the cake was extremely moist, rich, and did not have any sort of "frozen" taste that many places have. Overall, food and service really impressed me for a restaurant in the Mission. We had take out from here during the pandemic. All food was delicious like usual. They do have outdoor seating and it looked nice but we decided to bring the food home and drink Sangria without the worry of driving home. You can get a pitcher to go! So yummy. We ordered the typical items: Caribbean Shrimp with extra sauce, Mussels, Fried Calamari, Seafood Paella, Wings, and Ceviche. There was a small group of us so we doubled up on most things. The food did NOT travel well. They use the foil trays with paper tops. The dishes were packed so tightly, most dishes popped open even with the plastic wrap. The shrimp was in the bottom of the stack so the sauce in the shrimp dish spilled all into the bag. It was a complete mess to get the dishes out of the bags. I have no shame though. I put a hole in the bottom of the bag and squeezed all the sauce back over the shrimp. It's yummy dipping sauce and you can't waste it! Luckily, they give you a ton of bread! read more

I don't have another experience to compare my first Cha Cha Cha to, so this was solely based on first impressions. The location itself is in a somewhat less populated part of town and parking is a pain to find (but what part of the city isn't). It took a couple of rounds, passed an ongoing police scene and some illicit transactions and found a nearby spot around the corner. It's not hard to spot Cha Cha Cha, but the doors can get a little confusing to the place next door. It's huge inside, where the bar is a huge island in the middle of the place that extends from the front to the end. There are smaller tables on either side of the restaurant, but really meant to be a hangout/bar environment. We came early around 6pm, so no need for reservations and go seated right away. The idea of tapas makes the menu shorter and simpler (with portions that are decent for sharing). House sangria: You can have your options of full or half pitcher. We opted for full and polished that off without a hitch. It was fruity and strong, a must try when you're here. Sangria (insert emoji of lady in red dress dancing) is what the sangria makes me feel. Fried Calamari (10.5): comes with lemon garlic aioli which was one of the best calamari that I've had in a long time. The breading was light and crispy, NOT soggy at all. It coated the rings and tentacles perfectly and the aioli didn't overpower the natural bite of the calamari. The portion was definitely big enough for three people to share (even more). + 3 lemon wedges! Steamed Black Mussels (14): in a garlic, tomatoes, fresh herbs and saffron broth which blew my mind. Depending on the season I assume, that our mussels were a lot smaller than expected. But the broth was amazing and great for dipping that house bread. Loved all the flavors that blended into the mussels and it came covered in a ceramic pot (which kept the heat it and allowed the mussels to fully open). Sauteed Mushrooms (12): with sherry wine, fresh herbs and garlic. This was the highlight of the night and something unexpected. We needed some veggies since a lot of the food was something I considered "unhealthy" in a sense since it was fried or baked. But the mushrooms were whole capped and sauteed to perfection. Every bite sank right into the mushroom, bursted with flavors, and it wasn't soggy. I came for the sangria and the paella (sing that phrase to the Trey Songz 2 reasons song). "i came for the ladies and the dranks.." Anyways, the seafood paella (25) I wanted to be the hero of the night, but it feel short. The rice wasn't fluffy enough (hard) and the flavors didn't blend well together. It was decent serving size to be shared, mixed with sauteed spanish rice with saffron, mussels, mixed fish, shrimp, calamari, chicken, andouille sausage and bay scallops. Honestly, I didn't find any chicken or mixed fish and probably like 1 scallop. It was alright, but at 25 a dish, I wouldn't order it again at this location. The food was definitely filling and we had a great time. It doesn't get too loud but the bar gets filled pretty quickly. The experience and environment was something I'd find myself coming back to though. Decent selection of tapas, I didn't even crack the extensive drink menu (just sangria which was bomb AF). They have an atm, but take card. Bathrooms are in the back and clean. There's some tables near the back for a larger crowd, but it's not a good location for any parties over 5 if you want to be comfortable! read more

I know that this place is so popular that this review won't make a difference, but I just wanted to add my two pennies. I would never, ever choose Cha Cha Cha for a big group dinner. I mean, it's a place where you can actually reserve a table for a large group and the sangria is cheap, but sometimes I feel like I end up spending more here for sangria and food that I think is just okay. Also, if you're trying to catch up with friends here, the restaurant is incredibly loud and crowded. If you are unlucky enough to get a table near the gigantic bar, be prepared to have people shove their way past you as they enter and exit. For a place that caters to large groups and is similarly priced, I'd rather try to make a reservation at Zero Zero, where the food is much, much better and the ambiance is classier. Whenever I eat at Zero Zero, my share of the bill is something around $20 while at Cha Cha Cha I've paid $30+. read more

Cha Cha Cha is one of my favorite restaurants in SF. My girlfriend and I really loved all of the food at the Haight location, and we were in the Mission so we decided to give this location a try. We saw that this location was rated almost a whole star lower than the Haight one so we were prepared for a drop off in quality at this location. However, it was absolutely not the case. The food and service at this Cha Cha Cha location were every bit as excellent as the one in the Haight. Perhaps it's merely the hipster clientele in the Mission who feel like they must oppose everything that is popular who are responsible for the lower rating at this location. Here's what we ordered: Sangria: During happy hour, a pitcher is $20 (30% off their regular price) and is probably enough for four people. I forgot that my girlfriend and I had a half pitcher at the Haight, and so I accidentally ordered a whole pitcher this time. We were pretty toasted by the end of the meal haha. Cajun Shrimp: You've gotta get this dish! The shrimp was served in a pan of the most amazing spicy creamy sauce. Although there were only about 6 shrimp in the pan, I would have ordered the dish just for the sauce alone. They serve complimentary bread to each table, and the bread dipped into the sauce is incredible. In fact, we ended up dipping just about all of our food into the sauce until it disappeared. Fried New Potatoes (50% off during happy hour) - These make a great side, although they are really filling. The chile pasilla aioli complements the potatoes perfectly. Fried Calamari (also 50% off during happy hour) - The breading was a little heavy for my tastes especially when paired with a very rich lemon garlic aioli sauce. However, the calamari was cooked perfectly and seasoned well. The food at Cha Cha Cha is outstanding, and I would highly recommend dining there for happy hour or dinner. read more

After hearing many good things about Cha Cha Cha, I had high expectations for the restaurant. As a first-time visitor to San Francisco, I had also heard amazing things about the foodie culture. My friend and I adventured here for dinner to satisfy our Latin American craving, and as my 3 stars indicate, it was just OK. The presentation of the Lechon Asado was beautiful. The plantains, rice and beans were excellent and epitomized Latin American comfort food. The pork leg was an extremely generous portion, but sadly, didn't have any flavor to it. My friend had the salmon quesadilla, and I found myself stealing many bites! Cha Cha Cha seems to know what they are doing with seafood. Overall, the bill was pretty pricy for 1 appetizer, 2 entrees and a drink. Cha Cha Cha seems like an awesome place to do light tapas and a glass of sangria, but I would double check the menu thoroughly if you're coming with dinner in mind. read more

Reserved a table here for a group of 8. Upon getting there the door was crowded I couldn't even get in. I had to squeeze my way through because I'm not going to stand around outside when I have reservations. I get in and it looks like a dive bar. Not what I expected...The neighborhood surrounding it was not that nice either. Parking was a pretty big hassle. Paid parking is $15 about 2 blocks away. Food: This is the 4th Cuban restaurant I've been to. Definitely the work on my list. Aside from the chicken rice dish I ordered everything was below my expectations. The raved sangria did not taste fresh. I was really disappointed with the food. Service: Not the friendliest staff. I guess it comes with the busy ass environment. Everything seemed very rushed. We had 2 hours on our table which we were reminded of twice. Jeeze way to make me look at my watch as I eat. Environment: Dark, dirty, loud, chaotic...we were seat more towards the inner area but the middle of the restaurant is the bar so everyone was walking by us which is very annoying. Love love love Cha Cha Cha! I came in here with some of my girlfriends just looking to get a pitcher of sangria at the bar. But after we ordered that, we realized we HAD to get some food too. My girls had the calamari and empanada, which they loved. I tried the calamari too, so I can totally vouch for that one! I personally shared the jerk chicken dish. It was only $13 for 2 thighs, and a side of rice. Omg! If that wasn't the most delicious piece of chicken I've had in awhile... I don't know what is. It's the perfect blend of sweet and spicy.
