We enjoyed all the dishes we ordered, the catfish, fish curry, beef pad see ew, shrimp pad Thai, Thai fried rice, fried for shell crab, and the chicken satay. The staff were very nice, prompt. and accommodating. We had kids ages 3, 4, and 7, and the food was very much enjoyed by us all! The restaurant is cozy and quaint and a real gem in the neighborhood. They have a private room in the back for larger parties. Everything was so clean and tidy, and our food came out so quickly. I highly recommend! A clean, simple, and cozy restaurant with great service. We enjoyed every dish we ordered. Papaya salad was tangy and seasoned well. Forgot to request adding more lime juice to Chicken Larb. Tangy larb is our preference. Khao Soi was very good. We wished there were a little more soup to go with the noodles. We liked the flavor of Pad Ped sauce and especially Chicken Yellow Curry sauce. Took my little boy here after he got out school. The place is small and very clean. The lady was nice and very polite. I ordered the red curry and asked for it to be very very spicy and it was perfect. The portion was little smaller than other places I've been to but still worth it. It doesn't come with rice which is the first time I've ever ordered curry that doesn't come with rice. They charged $3 if u want rice. My little boy ordered the beef noodle soup and he says it was perfect. Rich in flavor and a good portion. Got the crispy tofu and it was cut too thin. When u eat crispy tofu u want to taste that tofu inside but all I really tasted was the fried part. I wouldn't order that again. Got a couple mango sticky rice and it wasn't bad. It was warm and rich coconut sauce. Mango wasn't very sweet but still good. Overall, we would come back again. BTW., the tip below the recipe is already calculated to make it easier for people to tip or u can custom the tip yourself. Quite authentic Thai and Laotian restaurant on Vicente and 24th. The food was absolutely scrumptious with spice levels generally mild to moderate. We also found the pandan tea and coconut drink the perfect accompaniment to the food. Service was lovely--friendly, welcoming, efficient. The restaurant is cozy with 7-8 tables. Came here on a Sunday evening around 8pm. It's a small restaurant and there were 2 parties other than us, so we got to sit at the window table. We ordered a chicken larb and pad kee mao. This new spot quietly opened about a month ago, but they have such an extensive authentic menu containing many Thai and Laotian food items I have never encountered in menus here. Their food is cooked very authentically and can speak for their Thai food as I just came back from vacationing there this year. The papaya salad was simple but had a nice sour but addictive taste. The Thai iced tea was balanced and finished it in 5 minutes because I thought it was that good. I liked the Khao Soi but personally would opt for another entree bext time. The interior space is small but quaint with nice decorations and plants. Service is friendly and quick, too. Food Review: Tum Thai ($12) Green papaya with spicy dressing, fresh chili, garlic, lime juice, long bean and peanut is a pretty standard version. Reasonable price and quantity. 8/10 Khao Soi ($16) Egg noodle switched to small rice noodles, in northern Thai style chicken curry topped with pickle green mustard, onions and crispy onion is favorite of many. This version has really spicy current and nice crispy wonton bits. 8.5/10 Mango Sticky Rice ($8) is solid, lots of sticky rice. Mango was probably out of season. One of the friends happens to be Laotian herself and she said the food was legit. Having gone in with high expectations, I thought it would be a shoo-in. Unfortunately, the dishes fell flat for my family. I ordered 2 Thai dishes and 2 Lao dishes to go. The lady was kind and friendly. The Lao steak was small and really chewy, despite being very rare in the middle. The steamed catfish seemed interesting and piqued my interest. However, I didn't expect the catfish to be cut up in tiny pieces and the dill was overpowering. My parents and husband did not like it at all. The steamed veggies that came with it were very undercooked, almost raw. The two Thai dishes were just ok. I didn't expect the Basil pork to be spicy but it definitely had a kick, so my son couldn't eat it. I also didn't know that they would use minced pork vs sliced pork. Flavor-wise, it was still the best dish. The last dish was stir fry veggies with shrimp. It was average at best but we didn't care for all the onions. Total tab was about $80. Portions were on the smaller side. Usually, I love to support small, local businesses. I was also very excited to have a Laotian restaurant in the neighborhood because it's rare to find. What happened?? we went to the restaurant was ok but when we ordered to be picked up it and brought it home it was awful. The Tom yum had cucumbers in it and had no taste. It's supposed to be sour and spicy! I lived in Thailand for 14 years and know authentic Thai food. It was so far from anything you would eat there. Not sure why Thai restaurants here do the fusion to cater to westerners :( The som tum was terrible too big chunks of papaya not even sliced thin no peanuts either! The pad Thai noodles too much soy sauce and sticky noodles no peanuts either sauce or condiments no chili flakes vinegar and no peanuts again. Never ordering from here again. read more

I live upstairs and have ate here twice since they have been open. The first time i ordered a traditional Lao noodle soup I forgot the name of it. it was pretty good, but wasn't exactly my taste in noodle, But still good. the second time I ordered the Khao soi, which is one of my favorite noodle soup dishes, it was delicious. I wish had a bit more of those little crunchy noodles things. Service was great. I met the people working there or the owners a few times(Peter & Ana) in passing as I live upstairs. super nice people and very attentive to the needs of the people that were there. Really cozy and comfortable too. Please be patient with the Service as they are still new. I'll be working my way through the menu, as it's hard to try all the unique lao and fresh Thai dishes in one sitting. It's great to see this place do well as it was packed this past week. I know this review isn't going to help, but I hope this place stays a bit of a hidden gem because I want to keep the parking light. If this place becomes popular, it might be hard to find parking. Came on a Friday evening and waited close to 40 minutes with 3 parties ahead of us. The two parties after us only waited 10 minutes... and they seated one of those party in the back room when they could've offered it to us but they didnt... I guess they pick and choose who gets to sit early and who waits. Then they took the order of the party that seated after us first then took our order. I get that it's busy but it's a bit irritating to wait for everything... it should be a first come first serve basis? But here's the food review: Every dish we got was 5/5. Asked for light salt and it was perfect. Tilapia doesn't have too much bones and the spare rib in the Kao Piak was really tender. Por Laos is a must. read more

Today I had the fried tilapia, Kao Soi, mango salad, and Laotian Naem Kao Tod. I lived in Chiangmai Thailand for three years as a peace corps volunteer working with villagers in the early 90s, and I have to say that this is one of the only times I've ever been to a thai or laotianrestaurant in the San Francisco Bay area and felt like I was truly eating food that tasted exactly the same as the versions I had in Chiangmai (Kao Soi) or northeastern Thailand (Naem kao tod). This was a very nice experience and a very welcome surprise. Interestingly, Kao soi has been served in Chiang Mai Thailand as a local dish and has been famous for many decades in that city, even when I was in peace school in the early 90s , but in actuality the origin of the dish is supposed to be Burma. Which I have confirmed with a burmese friend of mine who runs a burmese restaurant in Marin County. The Chiangmai version of that dish as made here on Vicente st is quite epic. read more

So excited after hearing that there is a new Thai-Laotian restaurant opening in the Sunset neighborhood. Actually, I want to tried so many things but just only two of us we ordered our favorite menu Khoa Piak and really loved it. The broth was umami and the noodle was perfect cooked. Papaya Salads both are medium hot and that was perfect for us. Grilled pork is a must!! Perfect pairing with a side of sticky rice. Yum!! Hands down the new incumbent for best Thai / Lao experience in SF. Step aside Khao Tiew (West Portal) and Khob Khun (Richmond) - both great places. The Lao menu is so very legit. You won't find Kang Om easily even in SF and certainly not with such authentic and deep flavor as Chaa Roen doles out. This is our new favorite place! I found it by accident one day, and realized I'd never tried Laotian food; now I'm a convert! Ask the proprietor Ana to help you out and you won't be disappointed. Our favorite is Nam Kao Tod (Lao crispy rice salad). May sound strange at first, but it's full of delicious flavors I'd never experienced. There is also a Thai menu, and I recommend Sai Ua (pork sausage) and Tum Thai (papaya salad). But you really can't go wrong here, all the dishes we've tried have been excellent. Four year olds approve! That's all I gotta say! I have been wanting to try this place since they opened but always afraid that it would be too spicy for my littles. Fear not parents, this place is toddler approved with casual, comfortable atmosphere and great service. We ordered the chicken satay and rolls for starters and they were gobbled up. Then came my beef noodle soup, which they both ate, the pad Thai, for dad, and their pineapple fried rice. They stayed away from the strong flavors of the pad Thai but they loooved the pineapple fried rice. Both adults loved the pad Thai. The noodles were bouncy and it really hit the spot. The pineapple fried rice was consumed before I got to try anything. The beef noodle soup was so warm and comforting. I'll be back for that since I had to share with my girls. After dinner, I suggested trying the mango sticky rice. They started chanting MANGO STICKY RICE loudly until the order was taken. They loved it and at my mango too! I apologize for the lack of pictures but every parent knows, I had to grow extra arms to feed them and me at the same time. I will try again the next time we go. read more

Ate here last Sunday with a party of 4 and a toddler. They automatically charged 20% tip on your bill. This was not posted anywhere on the menu. Pretty extreme. To top it off, there was absolutely no service from the only waitress that night. We had to ask for water, refills, drinks, napkins, etc. Table was only cleared when we handed the empty plates to the waitress. Food was mediocre. Price for the portions here are too high. The two noodle soup dishes we ordered were so small you can finish it in a few bites. Our total came out to over $160 with mandatory tip. Would definitely not eat here again. No service and mediocre food. There are many other great restaurants nearby that offer better food, portions and service. read more
