I cannot believe there is cheesecake anywhere else on the earth someone would eat beyond this amazing bakery! After a fabulous dinner and a bit of digestion time, my son and his girlfriend and I went downtown and gave this a try. It's a small shop, bifurcated into two distinct areas. One, a lilliputian order area and the other, a comfortable noshing and 'net connection area. I observed many people setting up laptops or tablets while enjoying their confection choice. We arrived around 8 and I asked if they had any coffee, she said she'd be happy to brew a fresh pot (extra points!) and that all they had on hand was decaf, which I opted for. DELICIOUS coffee! My son and his girlfriend selected the bourbon vanilla chip (I think that was it) and man alive--my bite was amazing!! We also selected a slice of coconut cream cake and again--my bite was beyond belief good! The frosting was sweet without being cloying. The cake had substance without being heavy, but was not a light and spongy cake. Really, it's the kind of cake you imagine grandmas made on Sundays in the 50s and are no longer around...except at Alex's! The three girls behind the counter were very distinct and all utterly charming and delightful--it was as if they were straight out of central casting for a comedy. The sassy one, the quiet one and the take charge one...and yet they were the perfect blend for the customers. And I was interested to watch over the course of 45 minutes a number of different demographics come and make selections and by virtue of the seat I chose, had an opportunity to watch the staff interact with the clientele. The authenticity and clear knowledge of the product was delightful to observe. Hipsters, young families, older people(like myself) and several people flying solo that night...all served with smiles and helpful tips. We ended up buying several more items as we departed to take home to my husband (peanut butter and grape jelly cupcake!?) and a roommate (several items) of my son's girlfriend and they each loved their items as well! It is evident that the owner has taken the time to create a quality product, staff with quality employees and provide an interesting atmosphere in which to enjoy some 'sweet time'. Well done, Alex. Came in for after a Valentines dessert. They have a lot of parking and street parking when available. The store itself is a couple of doors down but they have a Patio area and a seating area. Your going to get overwhelmed with the choices and I went for the Strawberry. My wife got the Apple Pecan which was delicious. The New York Cheesecake has a hint of lemon so don't be surprised. KeyLime was more lemony taste. They have a big cup for a small coffee so be careful ordering a large one. They have the largest Macaroon and very tasty. The purple one you can taste the blueberry filled with flavor. The crew was very friendly and accommodating. Though they have long lines they are very nice and fast. This is a cool, friendly spot in downtown Greensboro that offers delicious cheesecake and other desserts. I went on a Friday night and they had a small live jazz band playing that was really good! Always friendly faces while ordering. You can also sample the Cheesecakes if you aren't sure what you would like. Cheesecakes are much lighter then the ones at like the Cheesecake Factory and a fair price of around 4.50 per slice. Personally my favorites are the Kalua espresso, sweet potato soufflé, bourbon pecan, pumpkin, and simply chocolate are my favorites. I have also had the creme brûlée, chocolate swirl, and chocolate brownie turtle which were also delicious. You can't go wrong with the pastries either. Really...really good cheese cake. Heavy and rich, with a nice smooth texture, not grainy like a lot of lackluster cheesecake I have had recently. My kahlua espresso had a reasonable amount of espresso flavor, although could have had more. Still really good. The crust could have been a little dryer/crispier/what have you, but I can't fault them - they can't make every piece fresh, and mine was purchased in the afternoon for consumption in the evening. I ate all of a pretty good sized slice...shame on me. Others enjoyed the chocolate caramel turtle (good chocolate, OK caramel) and the pineapple (which could have had more pineapple, to my taste). I think mine was the winner - others were probably 3 to 3.5 star, but mine was a 4. Would definitely return. read more

Our family has been going to Alex's for years now and we love it! The cheesecake is amazing, but the other treats: Granny Squares, coffee cake, muffins, cookies and cakes are all delicious as well. I am gluten sensitive and am so excited that Alex has started making gluten free goodies, including a cheesecake (NY style and 100% yummy!), cupcakes - try the coconut with guava filling!, and macaroons drizzled with chocolate! The coffee is from Beans Boro and is always fresh and delicious. The service is always great with all of their friendly and knowledgeable staff! I'm born and raised in New York, but I will eat Alex's White Chocolate Razz over Junior's strawberry cheesecake ANY DAY. It's so flavorful, creamy and yummy./ Not too rich, just the perfect blend. Best part? 1)I don't have a sweet tooth, 2) I don't like chocolate and 3) I don't like raspberry flavored foods....how on Earth did they convert me? I have no clue, but Alex is definitely a staple! I regrettably have to drop Cheesecakes by Alex to four stars! Why you ask do such a dastardly deed? Because their coffee that they pass along to you sucks! Every single time I've gone in here, the coffee is ice cold! Again last night, all four cups that were ordered were barely even warm! When you can take your first sip like your drinking a Coke, then something is wrong with your policy of monitoring. I didn't take it back as this is a common occurrence. Yes it was extremely busy for a Saturday night as well! Everything they do is first class, the interior since the renovations is so warm and welcoming. I often see people just hanging out there with their computers doing work with a cuppa and I get a little envious that I have to go back to my office. Unfortunately I can not give the place of business the review that it deserves. I came to try Cheesecakes by Alex because I've heard nothing but good reviews and I am die hard cheesecake fan, when I first entered I didn't get greeted *the store was literally empty, no one was in there but the two workers* and I was like okay maybe they're doing something but it was until I walked all the way in and asked then person serving the cheesecakes where do I order, she gave me a very monotonous response. Then I have her my order and before I was finished she started packing up my order and I had to tell her I wasn't finished and I continued the rest of my order. Someone else rang me up but that entire interaction was just tasteless. Once I got home my friends and I realized she gave me the wrong flavor of cheesecake, she gave me Key Lime instead of NY style and I purchased four slices of cheesecake!!! I honestly find it a shame that I haven't been coming here for years by now, especially considering my love for cheesecake. I've been twice now, and I've loved it. My first visit was during the afternoon. My friend and I were the only customers in the shop. I ordered a creme brûlée cheesecake and a blackberry cream soda, and my friend ordered the chocolate raz cheesecake. The transaction with swift and accurate, but ordering a second blood orange cream soda was difficult. One employee had clocked out and another one clocked in, and the length of time it took the other experienced employee to stop stocking water bottles to come help the very confused girl at the register would have dragged this rating down to a 4 if I hadn't picked up that she was likely a trainee. We figured it out, and everything was delicious. I highly recommend the cream sodas; they're cheaper than their Starbucks equivalent and probably more delicious. I was jealous that I hadn't gone for the chocolate raz myself, but the creme brûlée was also good. My most recent visit was this past Friday night, and what cements my rating as a 5. I came in with a group of people that put the line out the door, but there was enough quick, attentive, and efficient staff to keep people moving through very very quickly. I enjoyed a kahlua espresso cheesecake and took home a guava coconut cupcake. That cupcake was food network worthy! Every element of it was perfect. I love going here for special occasions: if I want a birthday cake, and don't want to make it myself, this is where I go. I love all the flavors they have, there hasn't been one that I've been dissapointed in, though personally I prefer their specialty flavors over their basic New York Cheesecake. Some of my favorites: the Sweet Potato, Simply Chocolate, and White Chocolate Raz. You can either eat a slice inside, or take a whole frozen cake home for enjoying later.
