One of my favorite "new" discoveries on this trip back home for the holidays! Chengdu Taste has been here a couple of years, but I haven't gone before because I previously thought that Chengdu cuisine only had the numbing mala flavor which I don't like. I was so wrong about this place. Their food is spicy, salty, umami, sweet, and just super good! I loved their toothpick lamb with cumin and their Dan Dan noodles were super chewy and bouncy. Only thing is the overall seasoning of all the foods were a bit too oily and salty... definitely should've gotten white rice on the side. Great job with COVID-safety measures. Decided to give this place a try since I was in the area and wanted to give this place a try. In terms of atmosphere, it's not like the typical local style Chinese restaurants. It's a bit more contemporary, probably more akin to a big city restaurant in China. It's really clean and well maintained. Orders are taken via a QR code and is based on the table that the order is being made. So, if 3 people are ordering on the table, the order will be on one bill. Not sure how to separate it, so you might need to ask a waiter. Looked at the menu and ordered a Ma Po Tofu with rice. Be warned, this is not the typical Hawaiian style Ma Po Tofu, it's just spice and tofu. This dish does have a kick if you're not a spice person. Service was quick and the wait staff, though limited was willing to answer questions about any of the dishes. I would come back here again to try the other dishes. read more

If your looking for Szechuan spice, this is definitely the place to try. It will leave you with a burn that you won't regret. Once we got seated, we scanned the QR code for the menu and ordered everything through the website. It was also very easy to pay since you can do it all through the website without having to go back and forth with the waiter. I ordered the bobo chicken and the jelly noodle with chili spice. I was surprised to hear that the bobo chicken was a cold dish but it definitely was better than expectations. There was so much variety from chicken, egg, radish, tofu, and many other vegetables. I love spicy food so it was perfect for me and I loved it. In addition, we got the jelly noodle with chili spice which was a hot dish and complimented the bobo chicken. What we could actually eat was very good but had to throw out the inedibly spicy fish soup. A warning would have been nice. The twice cooked pork was delicious. We also enjoyed the dan dan mian noodles. Those were the only dishes the entire family could enjoy. I'm still a little afraid to order from there again. I don't like wasting food. Like most locals, I was raised to clean my plate. This is the first time I threw out an entire dish because no one was able to eat it. My husband thought I was exaggerating until he tried it. This place is a gem. I went to their Vegas branch a few years ago and saw this here so had to visit. This is much fancier than the Vegas place but the food is the same. Delicious spicy and flavorful. THIS. PLACE. IS. LEGIT. A friend recommended Chengdu, so we came during Saturday lunchtime. There was indoor seating available, and everything is very COVID safe. Dividers between tables. Scan QR card on your phone to view the menu. Can place your order on the phone. Now, the food. WOOOOW. * Tooth-pick lamb cumin- I can see why this dish is so popular. The cumin flavor really comes through at the end. Delicious. Be careful of the red peppers and not eating one of them. Also serves with cilantro on top, which I enjoy so it adds to the experience. * Mung bean jelly noodles in chili sauce- Very refreshing. Cold. Has a spicy kick, but it's a different spice than the lamb cumin noodles (not cumin). The roasted soy nuts in this dish adds a nice crunch *Water spinach with fermented beancurd- Tasty vegetables that was a more neutral flavor to balance out the other dishes. I have been a loyal fan of Chengdu Taste ever since I visited their restaurant in Alhambra CA. Yes, they are so good that they opened a store in Vegas and Honolulu. I've visited every one of their store except Honolulu thus I was excited and a little worried that they may not live up to their standards as their other stores. I was not disappointed at all. The dishes we ordered had the same taste, texture and presentation as the ones I had in their LA and Vega store. This is incredibly hard to achieve for Chinese food. Though I was born in Chengdu but I had not visited Chengdu for many years thus I don't know if the dishes truly tasted like they are supposed to in Chengdu. It is nice to see that the old Chengdu has finally reopened as Chengdu Taste. Now a couple of floors up, but most of the same tasty dishes as before. Many fear the word "Sichuan" because they associate it with the type of searing heat found in Thai or ghost chilies. The glory of Sichuan peppercorns is NOT the heat, but rather the fruity, tingling and numbing sensation it produces in the mouth. The Szechuan peppercorn by itself does not contain much heat at all and is more akin to a common black peppercorn. Its claim to fame is the numbing sensation it produces on the diner's palate. When married with chili peppers (the other key ingredient in Szechuan cuisine), chefs believe this numbing effect reduces the chili pepper's heat, allowing the diner to more fully savor and appreciate the chili's peppers unique flavors that often gets lost in the heat. I LOVE it and find that tingly sensation weirdly addicting! Tips: * I love their QR code ordering system that takes you to their menu where everyone at your table can simultaneously make suggestions to a common "shopping cart." A place where everyone at your table can see what was suggested and collaboratively decide what your table wants to zero in on and order. This system allows you to order as soon as or as slowly as you want, and it is paperless - loved it! All restaurants should consider doing the same even after COVID-19 passes. * The Boiled Pig's Intestines in Hot Sauce ($17.99) was very clean and fully flavored! I must start out by saying, I was extremely pleasantly surprised at how great the food was and how nice the service was to boot. We were greeted by a friendly staff member who explained how to order via phone with their QR code online menu. I thought it was nice that you can order, and pay all at the same time via the menu after scanning. I thought that was taking social distancing to a new level, lol! Located on 2nd floor of the restaurant complex area it is a great place to try Szechuan cuisine! If you love that numbing spicy feeling on your tongue then this is the place to be. We got the following: Bean Curd Sheets with Scallion sauce was great. It was chewy and tender at the same time. Good replacement for noodles. The scallion sauce is more so scallions cooked with sesame oil so it's slick and has a good flavor. The toothpick lamb was our favorite. Just thinking about the tedious work to put every bite sized lamb pieces on a toothpick is crazy. Definitely worth it though, as the taste is spicy, savory, umami and has a hit of the numbing peppercorns. The Special red tofu with pig and beef offal was also great, however very prepared for a kick of numbing peppercorns as every bite you'll have will cause more numbing sensations. It's a nice Spivey level, does not leave your tongue or lips on fire. Finally the teas we got was delicious and refreshing. Especially he winter melon tea. It's sweet and floral notes was great. The plum tea is slightly bitter and sour so it was a good balance between the oily spiced foods. Over all would recommend trying it out if you love Szechuan foods! read more

Today was my second time in this place and experience was much better than first time. First time around, we ordered some buns with meat and their skewers and we didn't like them. Skewers were cold (we didn't pay attention but it says it's cold dish) and just not very tasty to us and meat for the buns were very oily. Today, it was much better experience and we ordered kanpao chicken, eggplants, Dan dan noodle, wanton with red peppers and mapo tofu. Everything was delicious and very easy to order since you can place an order via online to your table. Food came out promptly and everything was great! You scan the code at the table and everyone who scans that special code (each table has its own) is linked to one shopping cart. You can add things and see what everyone else on your table added. Wintermelon tea - really sweet and the flavor reminds me of boba in milk tea. Minced pork with dried turnip - really good flavor and texture. Very spicy! Shrimp w/ fries - crispy fried shrimp with garlic. Fries seemed like they were fresh cut, but they aren't the crispy type. Kinda just potatoes cut into fries. Toothpick lamb - love the cumin flavor and light spices. Served with cilantro and dried peppers which you can eat with it for more heat. Pork hawk - nice flavor but too fatty for me. I've lived in Hawaii for several years and I have never found a good restaurant for Chinese food. By "good" I mean in terms of food quality, restaurant appearance and ambiance. It's one of my favorite cuisines, so ofcourse I've been throughly disappointed. HOWEVER, I have finally found a restaurant that I can say is not only good, but great! I would highly, highly recommend this restaurant. I found it on Yelp (yay!) and I'll be honest. I thought the pictures of the food were staged/fake. The food just looked too good from the photos. It was date night and I wanted to give this restaurant a try. So glad I did! First off, I went to this restaurant during COVID. This restaurant did such a good job with sanitation procedures. When you come in, they have an infrared temperature scanner that checks your temp before entering. Then the host seats you at a table, and the tables are separated by clear partitions. If they had paper menus before, they didn't not have them at the time of my visit. The menu can be accessed from your phone with a QR code that is placed on the table for you to scan. Then when the food was served, the food was served on dinner plates but utensils and cups were disposable. I went with chopsticks. The restaurant had such a good vibe and the staff was so knowledge and accommodating that the disposable utensils and drink cups didn't take anything away from the experience. Now on to the food. I ordered (from the app) pork and garlic sauce and the toothpick lamb dishes with 2 sides of rice. Both were delicious! And spicy! The toothpick lamb was more of a dry rub and the pork and garlic sauce had ofcourse sauce!! The price was very reasonable. All that for $38. Not bad! The staff was so nice and we made conversation about their culture and learned how to say "thank you" in Cantonese. Parking: Paid valet parking with no validation but parking is super cheap. 1st hour is free and every hour after is $2.00. Or there is free street parking depending on the time and day. Hot damn! The food here packs a punch, authentically Sichuan! My friend and I came here for takeout during the COVID pandemic. We got the toothpick lamb, green chili with chicken, and pork with garlic sauce. The toothpick lamb with cumin was really flavorful with bits of lamb with the fat beautifully rendered out. The dish came with lots of dried red peppers, cumin. Really well spiced, the rendered lamb fat really moderates the spice, salt, and cumin flavors. The green chili with chicken was crazy hot - much too spicy for me, but my friend enjoyed it. It was little bits of diced chicken sauteed with mala "numbing hot" peppercorns/spice mix, and lots and lots of spicy green chilli diced. The pork with garlic sauce was really enjoyable! The ingredients were authentic, the pork was fatty and delicious, the spice level was just right and enhanced by the vinegary and garlicky sauce. Perfect for bowls of rice! read more

First off parking can be sparse so you may have to look around or use the valet, the restaurant is located on the second level and is very busy so definitely make a reservation. They have a sign up sheet as well but you may be waiting a while if you go that route. All safety precautions are being maintained and all tables are separated by plastic. There is t any real interaction with any wait staff you use a QR code to order and they just keep bringing plates until your order is filled. The food had good flavor and was very authentic. The wontons were very good and the chili sauce was great. The lamb toothpicks were very flavorful as well. The chicken dishes were ok and could have been a bit more flavorful. The problem is ordering on an app doesn't allow you to make any adjustments and add heat so you get what you get. Would definitely go back but not in a huge hurry. read more

We were looking for some authentic Chinese and this place hit the spot! We were seated pretty quickly around 5pm on a Saturday and our servers were incredibly friendly and attentive the entire time. The only complaint I have is the extra charge for rice. However, we ordered the Kung Pao chicken and fried fish in sweet and sour sauce and both were so good. We love our friends over at Chengdu Taste. Buyer beware! The food is so delicious yet so spicy, you might have a hard time pacing yourself...which may lead to some regrets the next day. Chengdu is one of the staples in our rotation. We love the toothpick lamb, spring onion chicken, crawfish, fish in green soup and griddle cooked frog. We try to balance out all that heat with rice, an herbal tea and garlic ong choy. The service is friendly and efficient, but be prepared for a bit of a wait. They can get really busy for both in person and takeout. They have a handy app that allows you to order online and pick up. We do like eating in person. They keep it clean and cool, with a great view overlooking the street corner. Parking can be tricky, it is a small lot but they have staff that will park your car in a cool parking structure that stacks them vertically and uses a "car elevator" platform to move them up and down. They also have 15 minute parking if you're picking up. read more

Eggplant (鱼香茄子）, toothpick lamb, Kung pap chicken, and twice cooked pork fried rice (回锅肉炒饭) we're all really good. After Spicy Pavilion in the Chinese Cultural Plaza closed down a few years ago, there's been a dearth of non-Canto or non-local or non-mainland Chinese places on island, but there's been a recent proliferation with Taiwanese, HK, and northern Chinese places popping up. It could be interesting to look at the demographic factors why. Anyway, I finally tried this Sichuanese place after trying Mian, which I think belongs to the same company or something, a few years ago. We place our order online but didn't receive any confirmations so we called to check how long it would be and, amazingly, seven dishes were ready as stated in about twenty minutes. This place is on a Keeaumoku side street in the 808 center which is home to the aforementioned Mian as well as some boba places and a hotpot place. Although the meal as a whole was a little pricey, maybe a little shy of $90, it was delicious. I've had numbing spice before but my family was caught off guard by it, I think you can order without it though. The dishes were also a good spice level, like definitely spicy enough to keep you on your toes but not inedible. We cooked a big pot of rice to eat with the food which went well, especially to curb some of the spicier dishes. I enjoyed the mung bean noodle thing, since I was missing laphing, a Tibetan spicy noodle dish wish a similar texture based on it. This was probably one of the more spicy dishes, as only half of the sauce was too spicy for my mom and I needed some rice to eat with it. The boiled beef and eggplant were also tasty and went great with rice, both were also even better the second day. The wontons were alright and we got them with numbing spice. The zhajiangmian was also really good and we only put part of the sauce since it was really spicy. I've had the fried chicken thing on the mainland in suburban Rhode Island and it was crispier and spicier there, maybe it was sitting out for too long? We used the chilis to make a sauce the next day and that was good though. We got the stir-fried potato thing with chili and vinegar and it was delicious, probably one of my favorite things I ate that night despite its deceptively simple appearance. Very crisp. I know someone from Chengdu who recommended a number of other dishes from this place when i showed him the menu, so I hope to go back and try those some time soon. read more

The food here has gone down in quality. The customer service has also gone down. The prices on the other hand have gone up. They used to have a chicken gristle dish which was amazing, but it's no longer on the menu. At this point, even though this used to be an amazing restaurant, I would no longer recommend it. It's fine if you are just looking for a quick Szechuan fix, but It is not worth going out of your way or even making a reservation.
