    Chicken fried smoked trout
    Lian T.

I like this place! I really hope it stays around. The chicken fried trout was salty BUT if you eat it with the hash brown which isn't salted at all it is a great bite. As someone who loves sauce - i really appreciated how saucey and flavorful all the dish's are. The extra 3 side sauces are delicious as well and I added them on everything just for fun. The portion sizes are super generous too and I'd say fairly priced. Took home leftovers and they were delicious with eggs the next morning. As someone who tried Osito and really did not get it...I'm a fan of what's happening at Chicken Fried Palace.

I really wanted to like this place but it was okay. Decor is great and makes it cute. Worth to try out but I wouldn't come back. Service was very attentive, always refilling our waters. We order the chicken fried steak - everything was too salty. Tasted like that was the only thing giving it flavor. Also we didn't get any sort of greens on it like I saw in other photos of this menu item. Blooming onion - fancy version of the fair food item. Getting the chili oil on the side is a nice touch Sweet potato pie - best thing we had here. The black pepper makes it unique!

I heard about this place from a friend, and since I love fried food, I wanted to give it a try. The restaurant itself is super cute because it has a strong 60s diner vibe, and the interior really makes you feel like you've stepped back in time. Ordering was very easy. You place your order at the counter and then grab a seat, and the staff brings the food out to you. Service was quick, friendly, and attentive. They checked in on us several times, so no complaints there. The food, however, fell short for me. I ordered the Chicken Fried Steak with mashed potatoes, eggs, and classic sauce. I'm a big fan of chicken fried steak, so I had high hopes, but I was pretty disappointed. There was a sour taste to the dish. I couldn't tell if it was coming from the sauce or the steak itself, but it was strong enough to throw off the whole plate. The mashed potatoes were fine but very basic. I also tried the salt cod pancake, which was better. The pimento cheese on top added a nice flavor and helped balance the dish. For dessert, I ordered the Richie chocolate cake. It was okay, but honestly just a very standard chocolate cake, nothing particularly memorable. Overall, especially considering the price point, I left feeling disappointed. I've had much better chicken fried steak at places like Orphan Andy's and Tad's Steakhouse. Unfortunately, I don't think I'll be returning.

Started the new year off by visiting Chicken fried Palace. I loved the ambience, its a cleaner version of the previous restaurant. The service was prompt and really good as well. But that's where the good things end. For a breakfast for two, I spent well over $60. Everything and I mean EVERYTHING was overcooked and dry. Like the previous reviews have stated, the chicken fried items had no flavor whatsoever. For that to be your signature dish, it ended up falling very flat. They're a newer restaurant, so I won't be too harsh with the rating. But this place needs some work if they're going to last.

I was pretty bummed when Wesburger closed, so when I found out that a new diner by the former Osito team was opening up in its place, I was soo excited to try it out. Unfortunately, the food was SUCH a letdown... especially with the premium prices that come with Michelin cred. I was even considering giving it 2 stars for the food, but I think the staff was nice and the vibes were good and I'm hoping that they're still sorting out some of the early kinks, since there's definitely potential to improve. I wanted to try a variety of things, so we ordered a chicken fried steak with hash browns and classic sauce, seasonal grits, a biscuit with jam, and a pecan pie. For the good: the classic gravy with the chicken fried steak was really well seasoned, nice and peppery and very tasty. the pecan pie was delicious, and although the portion was pretty tiny, all the other pies and desserts (cake, banana pudding) looked great as well. I would highly consider coming back just for dessert one day. Now the bad... The chicken fried steak. Normally chicken fried steak is made with cube steak which is basically steak tenderized really thin. This makes it super easy to chew through and generally pretty tender. In comparison, this steak they used here seemed like a regular steak, which was basically cooked to well done and extremely tough to chew through (and even to cut through). The batter is a bit gummy, it feels like they used some kind of cornstarch or tapioca starch instead of flour. The outside that was more fried was not bad and had the texture of some popular asian fried dishes (like tangsuyuk or mochiko chicken), but the batter was thick enough that it was generally unpleasant to chew, especially in combination with the well done steak texture. The chicken fried steak also came with a side of pullman toast, which was really tasty and had that nice milk bread flavor. Unforunately, it seems like it was flattened on the griddle which means it was completely smushed and had none of the nice fluffy texture that comes with pullman loafs, which was such a shame. The worst part of the entire meal was the hash brown. It had the most bizarre and gummy-stick-to-your-teeth texture throughout that I almost doubted there was any potato in it. It felt like we were eating an entire fried thick puck of the chicken fried steak batter, likely it had the same kind of starch mixed into it. It was so bad neither of us could eat more than two bites of it. In terms of the other dishes (i.e. the biscuit and the grits), nothing really stood out. The biscuit was fine although it came pre-buttered and pre-jammed, so it had a lot more jam than I would have preferred. It was also not a typical fruit jam (I'm not sure what it was, maybe something fancy like rhubarb or quince, but it was quite tangy). The grits were also cooked just fine with cheese and wild mushrooms, but weren't particularly flavorful either. It's more like a simple side as opposed to a stand alone dish. All in all, the atmosphere here was really fun (retro diner with really cool artwork of famous fried chicken figures), and the desserts looked quite good. I think it'll be a while however before I come back to try any of their other dishes, unless they change their recipes in the near future.

Was Osito (Michelin-starred, live-fire resto) on your list BUT you were too broque to spend $295 pp...before drinks, tax, and tip?   *Raises hand*   While Osito closed earlier this year, Chef-owner Seth Stowaway is back with Chicken Fried Palace, a Modern Southern Diner (took over WesBurger).   Currently open for breakfast and lunch with dinner and cocktails to come next year. Walk-ins only. Fast-casual service - order at the counter, pay, and seat yourself. Grab your own water and condiments. M E N U Elevated Southern Diner Cuisine with biscuits & gravy, "chicken-fried..." (choice of protein), cornmeal pancakes, patty melts, pie, and more.   F O O D * Buttermilk Biscuit w/ egg + cheese ($14): https://tinyurl.com/srxpj833 - Request scrambled eggs - Add sausage (+$6) Fav of the two entrees, a thicc, juicy sausage patty and soft scrambled eggs cradled by a deliciously buttery biscuit with a nice tang. Golden brown, crispy exterior with a fluffy soft interior. Held together well when sliced. Loved the airy mousse-like gravy that added a rich savory flavor without any heaviness. * Chicken Fried Chicken w/ "The Bay" sauce, mashed potatoes, toast ($23) - Add eggs (+$6) This is inspired by Mister Jiu's Taiwanese-style eggplant from Chef Stowaway's time there. The chicken cutlet is battered with a rice flour mixture so the texture is different from southern chicken fried steak. It's doughy and chewy, reminiscent of mochi or Taiwanese oyster pancake. Glazed with a punchy, acidic sauce made from oyster sauce, fresno chili, and basil. I enjoyed the creaminess of the mashed potatoes but it was too salty. I wished they offered grits as an accompaniment. * Classic Pecan Pie (Slice-$7.50): https://tinyurl.com/mrnmcrmv Initially, we thought this was chocolate pecan pie but it wasn't. It was too overdone for our liking. S E R V I C E Wonderful hospitality from the staff and Chef Stowaway. Visited during off peak hours so our order promptly arrived within 10 minutes. A M B I A N C E Retro diner with 7-8 tables, booths, and counter seats. The vibes kinda reminds of the brady bunch house with splashes of pink. Great 90s rap playlist with OutKast, Public Enemy, and more. Overall, if you're looking for modern southern diner fare with a california flair, Chicken Fried Palace will be your jam!

This new restaurant has some serious star power in the kitchen, notably the Michelin-starred chef of the recently-closed (due to landlord issues) Osito. But anyone going expecting crisp flavors and pristine plating is instead going to find an extremely-well-sourced diner. It's high quality food cooked in a Southern diner style. Service and the restaurant itself are fantastic. The team works cohesively and food comes out quick. The food is good, but it's not necessarily my type of food. I felt like I had grease coursing through my body and I ate light. And here's where I do my rant on some of the other reviews. Yelp isn't about giving a restaurant one star because you were unhappy, One star should mean "avoid." This is a small business that doesn't deserve to get ripped apart by people who were unhappy with one thing and use their platform in some weird attempt to get a comped future meal. One star isn't a flex, it's shameless. I enjoyed this place and it does what it needs to do. And it deserves our support as it grows its identity.

Visited on a Saturday around 11am with two friends, restaurant wasn't too busy when we arrived but got busier as the meal progressed. We ordered at the counter and then got a number and grabbed a table. Food: Blooming Onion - great, beautifully presented, crispy and lightly fried, cut so that petals could be pulled apart fairly easily, drizzled with a mild chili crisp, super savory and flavorful, like the contrast with the aioli drizzle, this was our favorite savory bite of the meal, definitely worth a try if you come to visit Patty Melt - solid, came with a medium rare ground beef patty between two sliced of well toasted bread with a tasty thousand island dressing, some melted cheese and lots of grilled onions, was expecting more of a well done smash burger patty so were a little surprised, wish we could have asked for how we wanted the patty cooked maybe check to see if this is an option in the future Chicken Fried Chicken - ordered this with hash browns and the bay sauce, chicken was well cooked tender easy to cut through, batter is a thick chewy mochi texture which others have mentioned, it was fried to a lovely golden brown and not greasy but didn't get any crunch in texture which was a bit disappointing, when i think chicken fried I expect some crunchy crackly bits which this lacked, the bay sauce was excellent well balanced sweet and savory with a subtle hint of chili. Hash brown was okay, came in a uniform puck, wish this was a little bit crispier and could have used a little salt. The small side salad and the dressing on the salad was excellent savory yet bright not too acidic provided really nice contrast to the meal. Sweet Potato Pie - excellent, great flakey crust, filling was smooth and lightly spiced, not too sweet, generous with the black pepper crumble which was so tasty, really enjoyed this Chocolate Cake - cake was moist, chocolate was present but not too rich or heavy, frosting was sweet but not cloying, definitely a rich chocolate dessert but a solid cake Service was good, quick and easy ordering and seating. Staff is friendly and warm, they overheard it was my birthday and brought out a complimentary slice of cake which was so nice. Food felt well paced, dishes came out probably 10 min after we ordered and was paced throughout. We were checked on pretty frequently, water glasses were always full and dishes were picked up swiftly when we were done. Did feel a little bit rushed given all the check ins but I think staff is just feeling out the pacing and rhythm so can't really complain. Space is a fun retro diner vibe with minty green and pale pink accents throughout. Overall if I were to rate this on food alone more of a 3 star spot, the added touch of complimentary cake unprompted for my birthday boosted this rating. The blooming onion and the sweet potato pie were excellent and are worth trying if you come visit. Hope they consider a more classic chicken fried breading in the future.

Solid all around experience. Food was well described ordering at the counter. Dining was comfortable in the cool retro decor with perfect playlist to match. Food was excellent: Caesar was perfectly balanced in textures and flavors. side braised greens shined with ginger and bold seasoning. The "bay sauce" was sweet, spicy, tangy and aromatic with fresh Thai basil, over super tender well seasoned chicken. It's not your classic heavily dredged coating, so as long as you're expecting a less greasy thin crisp coating you'll be pleased. Even the rice was seasoned with delicious subtle flavors I couldn't name. Devils food for dessert was super moist and balanced. Loved the drinks too. Beyond the flavors on the plate and the nice atmosphere, this will be a return stop for me because of the ingredient quality. Fruits and veggies from top Bay Area farms, Koda rice, dandelion chocolate and I believe thoughtfully sourced proteins as well. The all day hours mean I'll be back for lunch soon. Thanks team!

Came here on it's opening day. I usually grant some leeway during a restaurant's opening week, but the amount of misses at this price point is inexcusable. Firstly, the good. The restaurant is styled like a 70's diner, and it uses the space well. Unfortunately, that is the end of my positives. The service was confused and slow. We recieved dishes as they were ready, meaning we got our pie first, and our mains last. We had to wait one whole hour before getting all of our food, and we only recieved our final dish after we asked the staff. Also the system in which they serve dishes is horribly inefficient. The servers were walking around trying to find the table numbers. They would sometimes do two or three laps around the restaurants before finding the correct table. Now if the food was good, or even alright, I could overlook these flaws. Sadly, the food was mediocre at best, and straight-up bad at it's worst. For the price (I paid close to $90 after tip), I expected much better quality. Pecan Pie: Even though it looks unsightly, the pie was the best thing we had. The texture was nice, and it was sweet without being overpowering. For $7.50 a slice, it seemed quite small though. Patty Melt: The first major let-down. The cook on the patty was passable. The onion jam was good, but was far too sweet for my liking. Also the quantity was pitiful for an $18 sandwich. Blooming Onion: Blooming onions are one of my guilty pleasures. This was a disappointment. The fry was solid, but lacked the satisfying crispiness that I expect. The dressing once again leaned too sweet. Chicken Fried Chicken: I ordered the Chicken Fried Chicken with Mashed Potatoes, and Over-Easy Egg. The fry on the chicken was thick and unsatisfyingly crunchy. I ended up removing the crust to just eat the meat, which admittedly was delicious. The mashed potatoes were fine, but I became tired of them after a few bites. Finally, the eggs were strange, unseasoned, and rubbery in texture.

Went on the second day. Restaurant vibes were great, food left a lot to be desired. Waited nearly an hour for our entrees to arrive after receiving our blooming onion, which was partially raw. I got the chicken fried steak, in concept the flavors were there, but in execution the chicken fried steak meat was full of gristle and the batter was gummy, much like the hash browns. Everything was luck warm and the nearly $30 plate was almost inedible. If you're craving a great chicken fried steak minus the vibes (which was this spots strong point), forego this spot and head over to Orphan Andy's in the Castro or Buttercup in Oakland. I really hope this place works out its execution in the future because it has potential...

Delicious. Kinda diner stlye food, but a little elevated. Expect most things you order to be on point. Great service, fun.

We waited about 30-40 minutes on a Sunday, which was understandable given how busy and well-known the restaurant is. One thing that confused us was the ordering process. I initially wanted to order a particular dish (unfortunately I don't remember the name and for some reasons I don't have a picture of it), but one server told me they couldn't make it because they were missing some ingredients. Later, another server took the same order without any issues, and the dish arrived exactly as written in the menu. Since it was clearly available, I never understood why I was told otherwise in the first place. As for the food, it was good, but it didn't quite live up to our expectations. Having experienced Creole food in New Orleans, we felt the flavors there were more balanced and memorable. Here, our main dishes were a bit saltier than we would have liked, and overall the food didn't stand out enough to make us want to return. The atmosphere was pleasant, and I can understand why the restaurant is so popular. However, after visiting, I felt that some of the hype may be bigger than the actual experience. I'm glad we tried it, but if you're already familiar with Creole food from New Orleans, you may find it less impressive than expected.

I could still taste authentic Thai flavors, but elevated with a different level of inventive preparation and cooking techniques. Overall, it was an excellent dining experience. I will definitely return, and I'm looking forward to trying their lunch menu next time.

My friend and I came here for a girl's lunch to enjoy their $45 special. I was pleased to see there…read morewas a vegan option here and was excited to try it. My friend ordered the duck. I ordered the Lion's Mane Mushroom. *A lovely note for the vegans and lactose-intolerant: there is a dairy-free option for the Thai iced tea (made with coconut milk). Given that this was a Michelin guide restaurant, we had certain expectations of the place and sadly we were disappointed. While the service was friendly and the server knowledgeable on the menu, the service itself was severely lacking in detail you'd expect from a $$$$ type of place. Our drinks came out first, followed by the appetizer, then came EVERYTHING ELSE all at once. Papaya Salad Daikon Soup Trio of rice (purple, brown, white) Curry + protein (duck for my friend, lion's mane mushroom for me) We tried to tackle the soup first. It came in an artsy looking bowl with undulated/rouged edges that was awkward to drink from but equally awkward to spoon the soup from. The daikon was VERY WOODY. Both my friend and I awkwardly spit out splintery fibers and left them on our plate. Some of my daikon chunks were fine but my poor friend had double the amount of woody mass collecting on her plate which was really unsightly, especially when you're supposed to be at a nice place. I can't say I've ever encountered this with daikon before at a restaurant. It's pretty easy to see which parts of the daikon are too mature to use. Next we tried to get on to our entree as that was cooling quickly. Unfortunately the curries were already somewhat congealed by the time we made our way to it. The vegan one was pretty good, but again, I had some woody bits in my food. I don't know if that's from the mushroom or if it was from another ingredient but the splintery clumps amassing on the side of our plates was not what we had imagined we'd be doing at a Michelin guide restaurant.... My friend's duck wasn't much better. She complained about the awkward texture and wound up spitting out half of that one her plate. -not to mention, her meal was served to her without a steak knife. After waiting for much too long, she got up to go request a knife and walked the knife back to the table like a psycho. I'm not trying to sound entitled here, but when a restaurant is supposed to be "nice" and has "$$$$", you sort of expect a certain caliber of service. Having to go ask for a knife when you ordered a chunk of meat does seem like a miss. For what it's worth, the curries for both of us had a unique blend of flavors. My friend had a penang currty sweetened with lychee. I don't remember what kind of curry mine was, but it was tasty with a kick in the end. Curry to rice ratio was perhaps 1:3. We had to ask for extra curry to accompany the protein and rice to balance everything out. It would have just been so pasty and dry otherwise (you know, since everything was already congealed...) By the time we got around to our papaya salad, it had gone from chilled to room temp. While it was tasty, it wasn't as refreshing as the salad could be. We're not sure why all courses were served at once, or if that's how this specific lunch service goes? The best course of the day was 100% the dessert. Order the vegan dessert! "Mango-sticky rice ice cream". It was a homemade mango ice cream with coconut milk base. It sounds basic but these ingredients were masterfully put together to create something truly unique. Not sure where the rice was in this whole situation, but who cares! This dessert was incredible! Lightly sweet, creamy and freshing. It arrived like a piece of art, like a glossy, glimmering mango sculture. The way that chilled mango puree spilled over, coating the ice cream underneath... It clung on to the ice cream layer just barely coating it for most perfect combination of sweet and creamy. It was unfortunate I got the last one for the day. My friend had the cheesecake which she said was tasty but not mindblowing like my mango ice cream. It also was... not so glorious. In fact, it looked small and flat, like a half used stack of mini post-it notes. All in all, it was a fun experience. The dishes were familiar favorites with a creative twist. For $45, it wasn't bad but I don't know about coming back for the $$$$ dinner experience based on this visit. Maybe we'll be back for the $40-$45 prefixe again in the future.
