We passed by this restaurant all the time but never tried it. Finally decided it was time to go for dinner. The restaurant was pretty empty when we went and service was excellent. For food, we asked for recommendation and we got lamb with green onions, lamb stew pot, mutton Haslett soup, and sesame bread with green onions. Sesame bread took the longest to make since they were baked upon ordering, but the wait was well worth it. Matter of fact, everything we had was huge in portion and tasted well. The only thing I didn't like was, clearly we only had 2 people and we were recommended to get all those food. The food we got probably could feed up to 5 people and we had a lot of leftovers. Shame on you, greedy server. Overall we enjoyed the experience and really like the food. We would go back again with more people next time. read more

The restaurant looked outdated from the inside and out. Ambiance was not very welcoming. Went in to pick up my online order, they said it wasn't ready, waited 20 min, still not ready 40 min I asked and it seemed like they didn't even start the order, finally I got fed up by close to an hour wait and watched as all these incoming customers placed their orders and received their food. I demanded my money back at this point but they were refusing trying to make excuses, took another 15 min of still no food before they relented and supposedly voided my order. Never coming back here again and doesn't help that after sitting for so long waiting you start to notice how disgusting the underside of the tables were, definitely looked like rodent feces of some sort. The store has its own parking lot so it made parking every easy to find. Additionally, the food was really good. The broth was so yummy and they gave us so much of that bread thing that we had to take 80% of it home. COVID made everything, especially getting good food, a little more difficult. But persist! Don't give up! That's what we were rewarded with today. After trying to get the sesame onion bread numerous times in the past few months....we succeeded! Yes, call ahead. Yes, be ready for unexpected closure or change in hours. Yes, support local businesses. Yes, tip well. My mom and I ordered the thin AND thick sesame bread along with lamb sautéed with green onions AND a cold dish. We drove to a nearby park and enjoyed everything while sitting in our car. Quality and quantity of sesame bread has not changed one bit. It pains me to have to write this. This was my favorite restaurant. For 15+ years, I would drive from Santa Monica just to eat their food. Today I ordered just a soup and two appetizer breads to go at 5pm. when they opened. They said it would be 30 minutes. Sounded perfect. I arrived 45 minutes later expecting the food to be ready for pick up. It was not. When I asked how much longer, I was told it won't be ready until 6:30pm. When I complained that 1.5 hour wait for one soup and two appetizers was ridiculous (which it is), I was told if I wanted something faster, I should go to McDonalds. A Halal restaurant told me to go eat at MCDONALDS. This is beyond disgusting, insulting, and makes me question if the owners truly respect Halal. They have just lost a very loyal very long time customer and I'm beyond any further words to describe my anger and sadness. read more

We would've ordered the thick sesame green onion pancake but hunger won (that would take longer to come out). The dishes were fine. Beef had a spicy pepper in it. Taste was good except if you did eat an actual pepper. haha. They don't charge for tea. So if you want to get sesame green onion pancake, support this business. It did not take long for it to come out. At other places when I've tried to order takeout, they quote me such a long time that I don't usually get to eat it. Very limited seating. This place is a hidden gem. My family has been coming here for as long as I can remember. Their house special chicken + sesame bread (I ask for extra green onion) combo is A CLASSIC. Whenever someone is in the area and we need dinner for a big family, this is the go-to spot. The chicken + the sesame bread. It's just really, really good. They have many wonderful lamb dishes as well. I love the mutton soup with innards. The soup is very thick and flavorful, and I think it pairs fantastically with the sesame bread as well. Traffic coming from Hollywood was terrible and we arrived there around 2 pm. I looked thru the menu and noticed the lunch special was until 3 pm. When the man came by to take the order, I inquired about the special. He flatly said that there is no lunch special today. I asked why and he said that due to the "situation" of having a lot of takeout orders and having few cooks. He said that we can order the items off the special but he won't give us the discounted price. Now, I understand that you can refuse me the lunch special if a) the items in the special isn't available, b) if there are too many people in both dine in AND takeout and c) if you specified that on certain days there is no lunch special online or outside the window. None of these were the reasons why and there were only 5 other customers in the restaurant. It clearly stated that the lunch special was until 3 and he didn't give any good or valid reason not to give to us at that price. If you're willing to give us items off the special, why not just give us the price for it as well since we're already here and on time!!! After a bit of arguing with the guy, he went and came back with the "we have the right to refuse customer service..." and showed it to our faces. My family used to eat here at least 2 to 3 times a month in the 80s and 90s. Went back tonight after about 15 years and it was better than I remember it. We got the chow mein (dough thick sliced) and it was so yummy and doughy/gummy and savory. The Walnut shrimp, thin sesame seed bread, fried rice and my dad's favorite fried beef dumplings were so good. It's not fancy, but food is delish. You gotta try it, or go back if it was also your childhood stomping ground and you're near Monterey Park area. But, I'll still come here if I have my lamb pot cravings. Our go-to dishes: 1. lamb with pickled cabbage warm pot - so good, my favorite especially for the cold winter nights. 2. Lamb with green onions - love it, pairs so well with the sesame bread 3. Sesame bread with green onion - the thick bread will take roughly 20 mins to make so what my fam does is just call them and order first so it will be ready when we arrive at the restaurant. Halal Restaurant in the San Gabriel Valley. China Islamic Restaurant is located near Garvey and Del Mar and there is a small parking lot for its customers. I highly recommend carpooling because there is only limited parking at the lot. If you cannot find parking, try Garvey Avenue or some of the nearby side streets. As for food, I love coming here for the Lamb Pot. I really like the flavoring in the soup, and I usually order the veggie and fishball pot for those that doesn't like lamb. Would also recommend the Sesame Bread with Green Onions. I usually prefer the thick bread because it goes really well with other dishes that are stronger in flavors. As for customer service, they are usually really nice about refilling our teapot. They even offered to refill our veggie soup pot there last time we visit too. I wanted to like this place, but maybe next time I'll try Omar's. When we went in around 7PM on a weekday, there was one table other than us in the restaurant. My girlfriend used to frequent this place many, many years ago but I guess times have changed here and the quality has left. We ordered a lamb noodle soup (kinda like beef noodle soup) with hand pulled noodles, lamb stir fried hand pulled noodles, and a green onion pancake. The waitress upsold us on not getting a green onion pancake ($3 appetizer for two of us) and told us "that's what the white people like" (rolls eyes). Instead, she suggested we get the $10 Huge portion of sesame pancake with green onions. The portion size of that sesame pancake with green onions was huge. There was plenty. Plenty of tasteless, bland, overly sesame, lacking green onion pancake. The lamb noodle soup was average to below average. The hand pulled noodles are tough and pretty bland as well. The best dish had to be the stir fried lamb noodle , which barely had any lamb, and was still kinda bland. Big portions, but not very good food. Will not be back. read more

Group of 7 friends came to China Islamic to enjoy a family style "halal" meal .... definite wins were the sesame onion bread, spicy stir fried lamb, and stir fried beef with onions. The chicken with stir fried noodles was good but their thick hand cut spicy noodles was not as popular for our table. Boiled beef dumplings were large and had strong beef flavor, but the boiled lamb dumplings had a bit too much lamb flavor and therefore not as popular with our group. Very extremely disappointed with the new management. They had one server for the entire restaurant. Everyone was complaining to the poor guy when clearly he was doing his best. Came here again after not having it for years! Was pleasantly surprised - it was better than I remember! Me and my friend got the thick sesame bread (my favorite), the lamb noodle soup with knife cut noodles, and the spicy eggplant. Though they were supposed to be spicy, the eggplant and the lamb soup were very mild. Still very good, but not really spicy. I was surprised by how tender the lamb was - it dissolves pretty quickly in your mouth and is very tasty. The sesame bread is a must here. We get the large and take a lot of it to go. Still great to eat it in the following days, though it does taste best when it first comes to the table. If you come here be sure to get that! This is our first time try Islamic crusine and the restaurant have been in the same location for many years that I remember. When we arrive at the restaurant and we got seated right away. The waiter pass out the menu to us and we look at the menu the food looks good but we didn't see any pork dishes because it's a Islamic crusine restaurant. We decided to order the green onions pies it's like a tortilla but it have green onion but it's really good. We order the fried dumplings and the orange peel chicken and rice plus the hot tea is complimentary.. They brought us the orange peel chicken and the rice. Orange peel chicken was really good it have very nice flavor of orange but not overpower the chicken but it have a nice light sweet taste. The dish have green onions and chilies that's add many flavors to the orange chicken. Add the white rice is amazing. The rice was so fluffy and delicious. The fried beef dumplings is probably the best fried dumplings that we ever have. The meat was juicy and so much flavor in the dumpling. Frying the dumplings keep the meat moist we fell with love the beef dumplings. Overall the food at the China Islamic Restaurant is amazing good, we will go back again. . read more

However, I rate myself a 2.0 for my ability to capture pics before I ate...a mark of good food being served, A 20+ year family-owned restaurant, so you know they're passing inspection with a clean kitchen as their serving Halal meat. The service is ultra casual, in fact, the server wore a tee and shorts. With everyone so very nice, I overlooked the aged decor and non-descript and dated outside paint and signage...and focused on the ample portions at a very fair price. The dining room seats a 80-ish, and large parties can be seated well here, but beyond the 10 or space spaces in the lot -- you'll have to park on the street....but yeah, no meters! Everything was very fresh, pungent, and aromatic -- 1. Three-flavor Sizzling Rice Soup ($8.95/HUGE) - absolutely delish --- I especially liked the shrimp, veggies, rice, and broth. Chicken was good, but beef was least favorite as it was a little undercooked. (4.5 stars) 2. Green Onions Pies ($1.95/4 slices) --- don't get too excited, it's not really a pie. It's a 4" square cut, very thin bread with diced green onions (or scallions), Love this anywhere I've had it. (4.0 stars). 3. Beef Dumplings ($5.95/8 pcs) --- available in steamed, too, but I took their recommendation and went fried. It's not just meat and spice, it has bits of carrott and onion, too. Threw some chili paste on it, oh yeah baby. (3.0 stars) 4. Spicy eggplant with ground beef ($8.95) --- great flavor, slivered eggplant, just a bit of ground beef mixed it...but I liked. I come from a province in China that serves up a mean bowl of Lamb Noodle Soup. In the US, it's hard to come by a restaurant that knows what I'm talking about, let alone does a decent job of serving it properly. There are two places in New York that does it well, and then there's China Islamic in LA. Order the lamb noodle soup with knife-shaved noodles. Knife-shaved noodles are thicker and chewier than your average noodle. The soup here was perfectly spiced and seasoned. The lamb was satisfyingly abundant. One bowl is really enough for two people, but it's so tasty you may regret sharing. The sesame flatbread here is also pretty good. As is the other lamb dishes. One thing I would recommend against is the beef dumplings...those were definitely a miss for me. I don't know whether it was because the beef wasn't seasoned properly or because the wrappers were chewy enough, but this dish paled in comparison to the other stuff here. read more

I feel really bad writing this review because the people who work here are super sweet, especially Jamila. I sincerely want to see this establishment do better! I should have headed for the hills after seeing the low stars on Yelp. I was feeling generous though, benefit of the doubt sort of day, "perhaps with new ownership they'll do things differently!" Wrong. As other reviews have stated, the meat is wayyyyyy too tough, my Kung Pao Beef was drenched in sauce (which I like) however even after all that sauce, I could distinctively taste the meaty flavor of the beef. Almost as though there was no marination process (which is also fine, a lot of Chinese restaurants don't pre marinate meat) but they make up for it in seasoning, NOT HERE, definitely not enough seasonings used prior to cooking the meat! I couldn't eat it alone so I ordered a thin parata though the thick parata is clearly a favorite (2 out of 4 tables had thick parata). My thin paratha was dripping in oil (no problem) I pat it down and let it air out. When I took a bite it tasted off, bad dough? I took a total of 3 bites and left the rest of the parata on the table. Needless to say, I couldn't stomach the tough, unseasoned meat and off tasting parata, I left hungry. I wasn't planning on coming back, like ever. However I got to talking with the new owner who came by to apologies for something else that happened lol. 3 other incidents occurred (all of which most Yelpers would report). I'm not going to mention them in detail because I'm not trying to completely kill this business! I knew I was going to post this review as soon as I left so in the spirit of thoughtfulness I suggested having the meat be a little soft and chewy vs tough. The owner showed genuine concern, he said "we tried to keep everything the same, and add a few more items to the menu!" I discovered the future downfall of this resturant, "keeping everything the same!" It was barley hanging in by a thread before. I really don't want to watch this thread break! I replied, "I think that's were you can improve! Everything doesn't have to be the same, read the Yelp reviews, you can change a few things." Honestly this place has potential for exponential growth, if they change the cook lol. The new owner said he's going to try all the dishes they serve personally. I was surprised he bought a business and hadn't tried all the items on the menu already! Anyhow. I'll give them 6 months to implement these serious adjustments (meat being tough, not seasoned well enough, and the other issues I won't mention but the owner knows what they are because he witnessed them with me).
