Honestly, this place is pretty good for being a touristy spot. Came here because I had a HUGE loaf of bread I bought at the Ferry Building and dipping that in chowder seemed like a good idea. I got the White Chowder (cream base) instead of the Red Chowder (tomato base) that they also sell. White Chowder- Very very thick and filling. I could definitely taste the cream base and the seafood aroma although I definitely wish that there was more clams in the chowder. This chowder was the exact opposite of being watery, the texture was very bouncy and covers your entire mouth when eating it. It was perfect with bread, and honestly drinking it by itself would probably be a little too much considering how thick it was. Overall, I would definitely come here again, not as touristy as I thought, but a bit overpriced. read more

This is our family's favorite whenever we go to pier 39. The prices of their clam chowders increased big time. You can walk further and you will see other places (including this full service restaurant) that also serves chowders in sourdough bread bowl for cheaper than chowders. The chowder did not disappoint! My first time in san francisco and this was the type of meal I need on a windy day by the pier. My friend and I shared the crab cakes and clam chowder and basket of assorted seafood. My favorite was the chowder in the bread bowl! Super delicious and would recommend coming here for lunch. One of the least touristsy places there is to eat at pier 39. I like chowders. My cousins and I have been coming here for over 10 years specifically for their Fried Zucchini's. They offer other popular items such as their Chowder bowls which are a huge hit and their fish and chips. However, I only nibble on those things when someone else buys them. My only craving is always their Fried zucchini! It's literally the only thing I order repetitively. They give you a nice portion of perfectly wedge cut deep-fried crunchy zucchini. You can tell they are freshly cut and not frozen. It's always served piping hot. Caution! They will burn your mouth trying to scarf them down too quickly. They also don't charge for the dipping condiments, thank god! All the ranch and Chipotle mayo you can ask for without extra fees. On other note: birds are often lurking in the establishment, they are not so much a nuisance. Maybe a little bothersome when kids chase them. However, they are in every restaurant because of it's location and the doors never being closed. So we've become use to them. read more

If you're craving for some clam chowder while you're at Fisherman's wharf, this is the place to go to. The alternative is going to Boudins or walking all the way down to the sidewalk vendors. Chowders reminds me of an upscale Long John Silver's that also happens to serve bread bowl soup. Located right on Pier 39, their main purpose is to suck those tourist dollars out of your truly when I'm on vacation. The menu is basically fried seafood and chowder in bread bowls. Fried shrimp was crispy but a tad bland. Chowder was average and portions were quite small for the price. Fish sandwich was good but it was pretty tiny for 10 bucks. Overall, food was just so-so. I thought this place was going to be banging but it was just too over hyped in my opinion. We came in for a late lunch and ordered clam chowder and tomato soup in the bread bowl. We also ordered chicken strips, fish and chips, and crab sandwich with a side order of crab cakes. Clam chowder was good but i have had better ones, it was very thick, the tomato soup was also delicious, it had a unique taste to it. Tucked in just steps away from Wipeout Bar and Grill, Chowders is the spot to get some tasty and quick food! Service has always been quick and awesome and has never been hit or miss here. we've always had wonderful service here and always greeted with smiles! I must add, Contra Costa County has limited places to get fried mushrooms, so whenever we are at Pier 39 I always get them here because they're so tasty! Never eat here!! The food was horrible and we wasted more than we ate. My mom ordered some French Fries and took one bite and they were cold. After the bite, she told the cashier who then took the cold fries and gave them to another customer (with the bitten one as well). I intercepted and told the customer to look at the fries to show her that one had already been bitten off of and they were cold. Also, at 3AM this morning i woke up with stomach cramps which lead to throwing up and diarrhea. I like this place because it's on the pier and a decent price compared to some other restaurants around. There's indoor and outdoor seating and the workers are very nice. I ordered the white clam chowder which was creamy and delicious. We also ordered the calamari and chips which was just okay. They gave us way more chips than calamari. The chowder itself was warm and had big chunks of clams I'm giving a 2 for that as well as the sourdough bread bowl it came in I also added hot sauce to give it a kick on the cold day . But a low star rating overall because of the cleanliness of the whole place . The staff at the counter was also very nice to me and got my order out right away . On a typical day it might be really busy tho because it's the pier and people are always here so expect a line . I ate inside near the window so I could look out and people watch and look at the water , but giving this place 2 because even though I was inside there was too many flies and birds flying around everywhere which made it difficult to eat because I kept having to shoo them away . Also when I was eating idk what possessed of the workers to come over to right where I was sitting there was a window and he decided to clean that window with window cleaner the spraying kind which I felt was getting everywhere and while I was eating mind you it wasn't extremely busy at time and he could have cleaned other areas but decided to do that one which in my opinion etiquette wise was just bad on his part . There are plenty of places to park but you have to find them during the weekday I found one for $10 that was on Stockton St in a garage so you just have to look around if you aren't trying to spend that much on parking . read more

The tables were clean and they were a couple of cool places to sit indoors because it was too warm outside. It's located on Pier 39 quick and easy to get in order your food and eat and go. The calamari on the plate was not very good and the fries were nothing special and overall a small portion. Chowders is located right on Pier 39 where all the tourists go, which makes it easy to find but also really crowded. You can choose between white or red clam chowder in a sourdough bread bowl ($8.99). I had the white and it did not disappoint. It was creamy with big chunks of clam and veggies, and a hint of bacon. It went well with the fresh, chewy bread. If you're like me and always wished bread bowls came with more soup, I was told they offer refills for around $4. Besides chowder, they serve a variety of fried seafoods and vegetables. For non-seafood lovers they also have chicken strips and grilled cheese. If the rest of their food is anything like their chowder, it's worth trying. It's a fast casual place with reasonably priced food, especially for being in such a touristy place. Chowders has incredibly tasty fish and chips, which are breaded to a satisfying crisp. It's rightfully a busy establishment due to their great food. I'm giving 4 stars instead of 5 because the portion size of the clam chowder was too small. It's usually served in a bread bowl but one of my parents requested it be served without bread. I understand that it may be an odd request but they had reasons for it. We were expecting the portion to be just as big, but we were given a significantly smaller bowl instead. For a $12.99 soup, they should have larger bowls prepared as an alternative to the bread, or offer a lower price for the smaller bowl we received. But we did get what we paid for in terms of quality at least. I would still recommend this restaurant, particularly for tourists. read more

I know too little about good Clam Chowder to judge the quality here. But I liked the white clam chowder I ordered early in the morning of New Year's day. It was a great start into 2019. They serve your chowder in a bread bowl. People most likely won't eat the whole bowl except the top part. I do believe that the bowl looks relatively big but once you actually finish it, the hollow part, the inside is pretty small. Or at least smaller than you expect. Either way. In my honest opinion, this is the best place for clam chowder in SF, despite what anyone says. I've tried many other places, even the ones in Seattle, and I still think chowders is the best. This has become our go to spot for chowder when we're in SF for the last 15 years. New England chowder in a bread bowl with some black pepper tho.. It hits the spot, especially when it's cold.
