Took a family visiting from out of the country a tour in San Francisco. Not a local so I thought to Google the best clam chowder in a bread bowl restaurant in Pier 39, although there were several options, we ended up going here. Chowders is one of the spots you'll find bustling with tourists here at Pier 39. It's not somewhere locals would necessarily go but they offer a great selection of fried seafood, chowder bowls, and sandwiches for the hungry traveler. My group of students recommended we try this place as they heard good things about the chowder. Inside the restaurant was I ordered the Crab & Shrimp Sandwich with a side of fries ($13.54). The thick cut fries laid at the bottom of the cold sammy. I wasn't in love with the sandwich but thought it was fine for what it's worth. Crab meat was decent but there wasn't a lot of flavor or juiciness behind the seafood spread. Not to mention that the chilled inside spread seemed to counteract with the warm toast a bit. The clam chowder was pretty good. It was a little on the salty side, i could taste garlic and I saw bay leaf in there. It was not too fishy if that's a deal breaker for you. I had it in a bread bowl and I do feel like you're cheated out of a good amount. They barely scraped the bread out of my bowl so I felt like I didn't have as much soup. My gf had a little more. I had to take a star off for this. It would be smart to give the soup in a cup so you can fill it yourself and get the proper amount. The shrimp basket and fries were really good. I've been here a couple of times now, each time when we've had family visiting from out of town. Each time I've gotten the chicken salad, others have e gotten the clam chowder and/or chicken strips and fries baskets. The chicken strips and fries were good and fresh but they could have put more fries in the basket. The chicken was good but there were only 3 strips. The salad I always find to be a bit weird. There's huge pieces of lettuce, tomatoes, celery and also mushrooms. I always forget to tell them no mushrooms and so it's a bit jarring to have that in the salad. The salad itself is put inside a fried tortilla thing that doesn't really taste what it looks like so it's kind of odd. There's also like 1 chicken strip cut up on top of the salad. The clam chowder is pretty good and comes in a big bread bowl. There are pretty big pieces of clam from what I've been told. The worst thing about this place is how small it is. Located near the front of Pier 39, and honestly my usual place to go to grab some fried seafood when I'm here. Compared to the other restaurants, Chowders is (slightly) less pricey, more casual, you won't have to wait a super long amount of time to get your food. It's usually bustling, but they have outdoor and indoor dining so it's not too hard to find seating! My favorite things to get here are the shrimp and chips or the calamari and chips basket. The order comes out fresh and hot, with a greasy shine. Most satisfying is the crunch we all love from fried food when you bite into it. Probably the biggest "win" we found for food in the area. -Quick in and out. Lines were smaller than other locations. -Chowder was some of the best I have ever had. -Bread bowl holding chowder is top notch. -Fried goodies were, well, good! - Pricing was fair and we didn't have to sell a kidney to eat here. It looked like a good spot for a quick bite and some clam chowder sounded good. Chowders is a casual spot where you order your food at the counter and you're given a number for your order. If you order chowder they give it to you right away so you can eat it while you wait for the rest of your order. We ordered one of each chowder. The white and the red. They were both served piping hot in sourdough bread bowls. The red had a tangy tomato flavor to it and the white was creamy and had good flavor. We also ordered the crab and shrimp sandwich. The sandwich was served cold and had shrimp and crab salad wedged in between bread with tomato slices and lettuce on it. It was just okay. Not bad but not memorable either. BLUF: decent food at this price point considering the location I went on a weekday evening at about 6:00 p.m. . The place is very very basic with a few tables and plastic chairs. You walk up and order and then take your food to your table. I ordered the white clam chowder in sourdough bread bowl and the shrimp cocktail. Be aware of the shrimp cocktail is really just some boiled shrimp put in a bowl with a little container of cocktail sauce and a sprig of parsley on top. Not that that's bad but it's not a put together cocktail like you might expect. I will say the shrimp had some nice firmness to them and not mushy like a lot of places. The clam chowder was a little under season for me but a little salt and pepper brought it up to standards. Not a lot of pieces of clam in there but it was still pretty tasty and is definitely a feel-good food to have on a chilly day out on the pier. The sourdough bread bowl pretty much rocked. Going to be honest, to come here I had to convince my parents out of the Hard Rock Cafe. I'm so glad I did because they loved it. There's outdoor seating in the back with a view of the water and steps away from my moms favorite attraction- the sea lions. Tried this place out when we walked through Fisherman's Wharf on an early weekend morning (glad there was no one at the restaurant). The place looks a little bit like a tourist trap since its right out front in the pier, but the food is surprisingly good. I ordered a White Clam Chowder without the bread bowl and it was delicious! The difference between the red and the white chowder is that the red is tomato based whereas the white is cream based. The chowder had a lot of ingredients inside and the clam flavor definitely penetrated throughout the thick soup. Honestly, this place is pretty good for being a touristy spot. Came here because I had a HUGE loaf of bread I bought at the Ferry Building and dipping that in chowder seemed like a good idea. I got the White Chowder (cream base) instead of the Red Chowder (tomato base) that they also sell. White Chowder- Very very thick and filling. I could definitely taste the cream base and the seafood aroma although I definitely wish that there was more clams in the chowder. This chowder was the exact opposite of being watery, the texture was very bouncy and covers your entire mouth when eating it. It was perfect with bread, and honestly drinking it by itself would probably be a little too much considering how thick it was.
