Take-out food was packaged inappropriately for the dish (think soupy fish sauce in a flat styrofoam container), so that when the food arrived much of it was sloshing around the botton of the bag. The chicken dish, by contrast, was completely missing its sauce - just flavorless chicken. What remained of scallop dish tasted fishy (in a bad way - with a hint of old crusty gym socks)... Couldn't stomach more than a bite. Super disappointing. I did call restaurant about it and they: 1) blamed the delivery guy (!); and 2) did not offer any repair except to "replace the chicken dish". I see others have found what we did... customer service is not just poor and slow.. rudeness and incredible lack of caring about the customers need to be gluten free was a consistent theme. We were going to call the management back and tell them what a terrible experience we had with our waiter Kevin , but now I see the management is where he learned to be rude and it would have been a waste of time ... The Dragon Lady sets the tone for your meal. She sits on her throne and depending on her mood, will either ignore you or tell you off. The food is fair to partly cloudy. Very expensive for a bowl of white rice. If you want to eat inside the restaurant you'll be charged for keeping the chair warm and that's about all that will be warm. Very disappointing. The food at Chow's is always delicious, but the service is terrible. We were sat and then left waiting this evening for 15 minutes-no greeting, no water, nothing, meanwhile 4 staff members were just whizzing by us. Our server finally came over and we were ready to order everything by the time she got to us. After a couple of sarcastic remarks, she got our order in. Our drinks and appetizers came out with no issue, but then we were sent food that we didn't order. No problem- we sent it back. But then our food did eventually come out and my order was incorrect, but our server never came back over to see how everything was. We were also out of water, wanted more sake, but we did without since she was too busy with everyone else to worry about us, even though our table was right by the kitchen and she had to pass us any time she had to go to the back. When we were done, we sat there a while, and she asked if we needed boxes-we said yes. While we were waiting, my partner decided he would order dessert whenever she came back. We sat there for another 15-20 minutes, just waiting. I had to flag her down and ask for our check and the boxes. She gave a big harrumph, didn't say a word, and gave us our check. We had to ask for boxes again. She brought them over, didn't say a word to us. We paid and left- she walked right by us- no goodbye, no thank you, nothing. My partner still left a $20 tip. I asked him to take $5-10 off for the awful attitude but he didn't. We then walked over to the grocery store and bought some green tea ice cream to take home with us. We won't be going back to dine in again, that's for sure. We might settle for take out. Well, a one star review is not what i was originally going to leave, the food was actually pretty good. I got dragon sesame beef with white rice and pork buns. I really enjoyed the buns the beef was eh, what i wasn't expecting is to wake up at 2 am feeling disgusting and nauseous. I threw up 3 times and was hoping it would stop. It didn't its now the next morning and i am so sick throwing up and shaky. Be careful eating here cause food poisoning sucks. *Update, Other than some fresh lays potato chips it was the only meal I ate that day, and it is what it is what i threw up. Was really sick for 2 days and still feeling weird after the next day after that. But I've even since than and havn't been sick so i'm 100% it was the food. read more

We have been dining at Chows in Santa Fe for 20 years. It is consistently delicious Asian dishes prepared with flair and creativity and not the usual bland and boring Cantonese food one may be accustomed to in big cities. Chows dishes and sauces are unique, in the best possible way. Savory, perfectly balanced sauces (try the Buddhism Bean Curd and Sechuan chicken and green beans, General Tso's chicken or shrimp and vegetables in brown sauce - all have completely different sauces - all are magnificent! It is a bit more expensive, yes, but they are giving you enough for 2 or 3 meals per dish - well worth it. You WILL want some tomorrow! They are open every day for take out and are still fast and expert with the same wonderful staff. read more

I used to love this place but the last couple of times the food went wayyy downhill. My favorite is always the Bangkok prawns and vegetable fried rice, always simply amazing and full of flavors and just the right amount of spice. Last time and this time I didn't even put a dent in my plate. The two dishes were, well, simply blaaze. I had stopped ordering take out food for a long time because the girl taking the phone orders was extremely rude and nasty. I had asked to talk to the manager or owner and she simply hung up on me numerous times. Her nastiness and unprofessional manner was a huge turn off. I stayed away for ages. Unfortunately, now the food simply isn't as good as it used to be but nobody seems to want to listen to constructive criticism. They must have changed cooks or they don't get fresh products no more. I used to love this place but the last three times I've eaten there it has been bad. It might be because of the pandemic and being short staffed, but regardless it is not very good now. My kids also loved this place and they even noticed the change. They use quality ingredients and it shows! I have eaten here at least 5 times and have tried two different offerings each time. I am a big fan of the chicken dumplings, dragon chicken and kung pao chicken. Their kung pao is not breaded and is very good. Some other dishes do seem to be a bit heavy on the oil (I.e. pad Thai)but the kung pao is just right! They can adjust spiciness according to taste. After finding difficulty to distinguish between the fish, pork and chicken dishes we questioned if the meat was boiled in advance to making the final cooking easier. Even the soups were bland. Chow's Contemporary Chinese I am really unsatisfied and highly disappointed with the way you guys have treated me. I called at 1:20 to place a order for the Specialty Lemon chicken that read " Battered and fried chicken breast stir fried with snow peas in a sweet lemony sauce - 13.95". I chose to add cashews on top for a whopping 3$ and when I got home to open my food I noticed the chicken wasn't what I had ordered so I called them back to see if we could fix this in some sort of way because I'm allergic to the noodles and the ladies response was " no sorry this is what you ordered there's nothing we can do for you and hung up. When I called them back her attitude was even worse then the first time and she proceeded to cut me off an tell me " You order this and add cashews we cant do nothing nobody's working right now" repeatedly so I hung up. The food is mediocre for the staggering price and the service is poor. Takeout containers, especially soup, are only ever filled to the 2/3 mark. They are frequently out of many things on the menu. The restaurant is clean though, something that can't be said of its competitors. Customer service used to be OK. The woman who now most frequently answers the phone and staffs the counter is genuinely unpleasant to deal with. Red flags went up immediately when we saw on the menu we would be charged $1.50 for rice in dishes for which rice is a part. Right away you know the place is a rip off. It was the worst Asian food we've ever eaten in our lives. For starters, the wontons were bad. We've never been to any Asian restaurant where they've screwed up the wontons, but they managed. And they brought some sort of weird tasting green stuff for dipping sauce. We asked if we could have regular sweet and sour and hot mustard instead. The "regular" sweet and sour sauce was a very strange color - very dark red brown. It tasted like a combination of cherry cough syrup and soy sauce. The rest of the meal was absolutely uneatable. When the waiter saw that I ate none of it and didn't want a to-go box, he should have consulted the manager about taking it off the bill. My fault for not saying anything, but I really shouldn't have had to. That's just how it's supposed to go in the restaurant business. I think these people are trying to make everything very different from every other Asian restaurant. Unfortunately, "different" doesn't necessarily equate with "good." They are proof. read more

Unfortunately, I am left with no choice but to leave a single star. I WAS a frequent Chow's customer up until recently. I placed a large split ticket order over the phone and when I arrived for the order it was on a single ticket. I told the worker that I had specifically requested separate tickets and if he wouldn't mind splitting it for me. It was quite obvious by his attitude that he wasn't happy about it but did it anyway. However, after paying him for the three separate orders I requested soy sauce to go. He then rudely handed me the soy sauce and said "and please never come back!" At this point I could not believe it... I said "excuse me..." and he said "do not come back..." I then asked to speak with his manager and he said "I am the manager tonight, have a good night." WOW... I have never received such terrible customer service in my life! So, unfortunately this frequent customer will no longer bring them my business at their managers request. Impossible to describe how incredibly horrible this place is. First warning was the pad thai on the menu of this Chinese restaurant. Didn't order it but completely believe the reviewer that said it was bad. Second warning was when we asked the server what kind of fish came in the dish they called volcano fish, he went to ask and still came back with "don't know" -- we should have just left at that point, but instead proceeded to order a seafood dish that was obviously made from frozen seafood and was covered in a thick, gloppy starch. It was bland and the texture was vile. The dish called coffee chicken did not have even a hint of coffee in it. It was a fried dish of breaded bits that were drenched in spicy oil and cooked with red chiles- only there was not any mention of chile on the menu. We mentioned this to the server who replied that yeah, the menu should mention the chile, but doesn't. Besides being EXTREMELY spicy, it was heavy and half the dish comprised of fried bits of blackened, oily breading that did not contain any chicken. There were only a few diners in the restaurant and the woman who seated customers went around calling everyone "dear" - already really unprofessional, she then spent most of her time chatting loudly in the front, cashiers space, including making disparaging comments about some of the diners to other staff and telling one server how she didn't like the crowd in the restaurant that evening. They should fire this woman, unless of course, she's one of the owners, in which case you have to wonder how badly this place wants to be out of business. read more

This place is awesome and a locals' favorite. What it's not is an all-you-can-eat buffet with rows of steam trays filled with all those greasy favorites that some reviewers seem to be seeking. The ingredients are fresh and the staff is friendly. The dishes are imaginative spins on other cultures and dishes but I've never had anything I didn't like here. My wife has studied, worked, and traveled extensively in Asia and she loves the food here as well. It is slightly more expensive than your average buffet Chinese place, but once again, it's not that place. If you're looking for the standard chicken chow mein, moo goo gai pan, fried wontons, and egg drop soup- there is a super buffet five minutes away and it is a disgusting truck stop compared to Chows. But that seems to be a crowd pleaser, so more power to them. read more

Chow's is a shining beacon of light in the dark world of Asian dining in New Mexico. The food is delicious, and is by far the best Chinese food in Santa Fe. I know, I've been to all the others. You can put away the Sriracha, the food stands on its own for goodness. There are two dishes you should consider trying: The coffee chicken, and the dragon sesame chicken. The coffee chicken has a delicious aroma of smokey coffee, with high quality cuts of meat. The dragon sesame chicken has the perfect combination of sweet, savory, and spicy flavor. If you want you can ask them to make it hotter. We have been coming here with our infant daughter and they have really gone out of their way to accomodate us. It really makes the difference when we are made to feel comfortable. read more

You guys should buy a machine so let customers tip as they want or just give customers a receipt so they can choose about tipping.
