I stopped by this morning for my daily coffee, and the customer service was honestly awful. No greeting when I walked in, no friendliness at all. I told the cashier my order, and she just looked at me with no response. After I paid, she walked away--no receipt, no explanation, nothing. The coffee itself was fine, but the staff seemed completely uninterested and unenthusiastic. I don't know if it's this specific location or the area, but it's a huge contrast from other Alfred locations where service is usually great. Definitely won't be returning.

World Famous Vanilla Lattes, one hot & one iced
    Emese S.

On a sleepy Sunday morning, our eyelids woke up to the World Famous Vanilla Lattes from Alfred Coffee. We ordered one hot & one iced. Both were superb. Service was also quick with our friendly, neighborhood baristas. Inside, it was festively decorated for the season. And the sun poured in through the front windows that greet Highland Park's heartbeat, better known as Figueroa Street. And it had that NYC vibe that we coffee snobs love. Now I'm not sure what the qualifications would be to label a latte as "world famous" but I suppose a few blokes in the UK gave it a thumbs up, a Parisian's pinkie got aroused, while someone in the Middle East raised their hands in admiration on Instagram to this robust espresso drip. However, I was informed by the Alfred staff that this title comes from its "bar-raising, innovative recipe." Ok, fine, whatever. It's true that ever since its Melrose coffee shop brewed the first, fresh batch in 2013, Alfred has gained meme-worthy status on TikTok. Apparently, it's Alfred's World Famous Vanilla Syrup that gets all the attention. Well, I'll drink to that. And I'll be back for more of this World Famous cup of joe.

There is no shortage of hipster coffee places in Highland Park. I'm actually surprised this place doesn't have a vinyl record collection and a built-in barbershop/winery/thrift store to match the other coffee places nearby! Why do I keep returning to this location? Great baked items, natural light, and WIFI. Surprised that Civil Coffee, another great vibe/hang, has no WIFI, and I ain't using my hotspot to work! The Matcha Croissant was fabulous, and I enjoyed the lavender Madeline, if you are into the perfumey taste like I am! I wouldn't get their Bagel and cream cheese, because they made it more of a dessert bagel, and I'm more of a traditional bagel purist. You can people-watch on Figueroa while you drink and work.

Stopped in for an iced matcha latte and it did not disappoint. I personally love a strong matcha flavor when I sip so it delivered to my standards! It seems like the perfect place to sit down and study, so might be back! Baristas were friendly, only issue was restroom was out of service so I had to cut my time short.

peaches n' cream iced matcha w/ oatmilk (limited time offering)

Amazing ambiance, i came on a Tuesday evening and hardly anyone was occupying the seating area. The barista was so friendly and helpful when I was asking for recommendations. I ended up ordering the peaches n' cream iced matcha with oat milk and it was so good, the matcha taste isn't very prominent but it was still pretty good. I also got a blueberry scone which was amazing, great size and density for the price. I will say it's a bit more on the pricey side but totally worth in my opinion. baristas have great music taste as well, lots of Lauryn Hill and neo-soul/r&b being played over the speakers.

Peaches N' Cream Matcha, Cloud Cream Latte (Plant Based Version)

Solid yummy lattes. We got the cloud cream latte (plant based version) and a peaches n cream matcha latte. The matcha latte was refreshing. The coffee latte was a great balanced latte, super creamy. The service was great, the staff was kind especially considering we went in right before closing. There was plenty of seating and beautiful interior, perfect place to study or catch up with a friend.

4.5 stars I discovered Alfred about a year ago and was excited when I found out they opened in my hood. Alfred is known for its exceptional brews, vibrant atmosphere, and engaging design aesthetic. I must say, their new location in HLP checks all the boxes. This place is retro chic! I love the décor. The menu is printed on glass in white lettering, so it was difficult for me to read. Tessa assisted me with my order. She was cheerful and friendly. I got a Sugar Free Vanilla Latte with almond milk. They make their own Vanilla Bean syrup, and you can taste the quality in every sip. My latte was the perfect Sunday morning pick me up. The foam was creamy, and the brew was nicely balanced with a hint of vanilla. They also have vegan pastries, breakfast burritos, & bagels with vegan smears too. I'm so happy to have Alfred in the area! *Small parking lot or street parking.

Please. Just stick with coffee. Don't even serve your matcha drink please It literally tasted like milk only.... And the fact that matcha cans were being sold.. I'm so so disappointed, I rarely even give one star but had to toss my drink along with how much I paid for that.

    Egg and cheese breakfast burrito
    Anna A.

My first stop on the "Highland Park Coffee Passport". My family and I came for a quick easy bite and ordered: plain latte, cloud latte, plain bagel, sweet onion bagel and egg+cheese breakfast burrito by Wake and Late. The coffee was good, the cloud cream was a lot so I feel like I couldn't really tell what their espresso was like but overall good drink, not too sweet. More on the dessert end of drinks for me. I love their bagels! Ball shaped bagels that have a crispy top and the softest inside. The sweet onion bagel + scallion cream cheese is my favorite combo. Their cream cheese is a bit gritty but not sure from what? Don't get the breakfast burritos! Not a bad review on Alfred's part since it's from a different shop (wake and late). Small overpriced burritos that overall did not taste good. Overcooked eggs and no cheese in the "egg+cheese"??? The interior is spacious but very cold (today) since there are large open windows facing the street. There is a shared parking lot which had no spots so paid street parking is best.

    Matchaga and matcha croissant
    Christine L.

LA weather is perfect for this place. My man got a matchaga and matcha croissant. Clearly this dude is into matcha and i didn't think this place would do it right (being a coffee place not an Asian tea joint) but wow i was impressed with specialty drink and baked product (which was sourced somewhere but they clearly chose a solid place). Has a nice old-time feel but clearly isn't old and decrepit. Nice ambiance to chill or talk to companion.

Expensive, mid quality, bad customer service. Tried it once, it was not good, won't come back. I think that bad costumer service started my experience. I was already not okay with the cost and the service just sealed my thoughts. Got a signature matcha, it was a little too watery for me. The vibes are pretty cool, I went on a Sunday morning, there was plenty of parking.

    Cloud matcha latte
    Samantha C.

I probably should've acknowledged the low ratings here and not come. It might just be me, but I do not like tasting salt in my matcha. There were big pieces of salt in my cloud matcha and most of the drink was the cloud foam. It was so expensive and not worth the price AT ALL. There was hardly any matcha, mostly foam, and salty. My personal experience also included having to be in downtown where there are hardly any public restrooms and this one was out of service. I think they should've offered their employee restroom or recommended where to go especially since I was a paying customer. Would not go back here.

    Espresso cloud cream
    Jennifer H.

Placed an order on their app and it was ready for pickup in 15 min. Really like all of the customizable options! I got the espresso cloud cream with half caf, oat milk and added cinnamon on top. Very creamy and not too sweet! Would def get this again.

We enjoyed the naan & dips (tahini tofu, carrot 'hummus'), and they offered corn chips for my friend to enjoy because she is gluten-free. For my entree, I had the sticky glazed fried maitake mushroom, and OMG, was it worth every penny! The dish was so flavorful and nothing like I've ever had! It was my friend's birthday, so we also ordered dessert. I had the mango sorbet, it was soooo smooth and refreshing! Our servers, food runners, and bartenders were so kind and raved about the Chef. It is clear they are all a well-oiled machine and enjoy working together as a team. The restaurant was clean, and the entire vibe of the restaurant was charming. Even though my partner and I had a reservation that we showed up on time for, we waited 30 minutes to be seated. That wait time is pretty outrageous considering we reserved a table for 30 minutes earlier. Once seated, we noticed that the staff were extremely slow and inattentive. It took a while for us to get some water and even longer to get our food. The pacing between dishes was ludicrous. The food here is the saving grace for the disappointing service. We started off with the naan & dips. The dips were tahini tofu and carrot hummus. I liked the tahini tofu dip much more than the carrot hummus. It was creamy, nutty, and savory. The naan was fresh and nicely charred. Next we had the goat liver mousse. This included crumpets, biscuit crackers, craisin relish, seasonal jam, and of course, goat liver mousse. The crackers were too dry for me, but I really enjoyed the warm crumpets. All of the spreads were equally good. The goat live mousse itself was smooth and light. For the main courses, we shared the grilled kalbi-style short ribs and pork belly noodles. The short ribs were covered in a sweet-savory sauce and had a deep caramelization, while the meat was tender and juicy. As for the pork belly noodles, the overall flavor was too salty, but the glass noodles had a nice texture. Throughout our entire meal, there was a fly that kept trying to fly onto our food. It was very annoying to deal with. I was surprised that it was even an issue, considering we had indoor seating. I would have understood if only we were seated outside. Ultimately, I did not leave with a great impression of this restaurant. On top of that, there isn't any designated parking lot, so you'll be lucky if you can even find street parking. If not, you'll need to use one of the paid lots nearby. Also, beware that this restaurant adds a surcharge to all checks regardless of party size.

It remains a unique addition to the neighborhood, as well as a good place to grab some interesting dishes. Since the opening of this particular business, the Zinc chain has opened in a few other locations. Those locations are much newer in not only their establishment but their design. This is not to say that this is still not an interesting, well-designed business, but, with time, it has become a little bit rundown. I hate to say it, but that is the truth. This location could really use an update and perhaps a deep cleaning. I was, in fact, kind of surprised at the condition of this business, for example, on the way towards their restrooms. From my opinion, it needs an clean up and an update. Also, the litter that surrounded some of the outdoor tables where I was sitting at my most recent visit was very surprising. This is just something to keep in mind if you're coming here for your first visit. In terms of what they offer for food, though it has evolved a bit over the years, they still have a great, heath-based menu, with some very interesting choices. For all of you vegetarians and vegans out there, you will, for sure, be able to find some tasty food to eat. Once upon a time, this restaurant was impacted with tons and tons of people. It was constantly full with people either going to the bakery and/or sitting down for table service. Shortly past their opening each day, there would be a line of people waiting for service. This seems to have changed, however. Meaning, if you're looking for an interesting place to eat, with some good dishes, at the far Southeast side of DTLA, near the lofts district, and you want a place without a long wait to get a table and/or your food, this may still be your place to go.

I got an omelette and it was fresh and light, but very small for the price and no bread included. Now for the rest, the service was appalling. We could understand that it was busy but the waitress never apologized or said anything like they were understaffed or anything. Also, we had a few questions about the menu and our drinks and the waitress would just say, "I think so?" or give a vague answer. She didn't seem very knowledgeable about the menu at all. Maybe she was new, but clearly training was lacking. I don't think I'll be returning but since I see many reviews relating to service issues, hopefully management is able to address the deficit

He missed a few meetings, a vet appointment and other things, but also saved the day, otherwise his relative wouldn't have been able to make it to Korea. While here, they ordered a salad with cherries and pecans that was pretty amazing. I think that may have been one of the better salads I've eaten. In addition to that, a cucumber burrata salad was ordered, and that was made well too. When my venison burger arrived, I took a few bites and it had the exact flavor I was hoping for and I thought the burger was done extremely well. My friend also ordered a pork chop, and it was an amazing cut, cooked perfectly, tender, juicy and everything you could ever want in a bone in pork chop. They also cut the entire piece for you and scraped every last bit off of the bone too. The service is really attentive. They come by your table a lot to ensure you have everything you need. The ambiance is a bit dim in lighting which sets a nice mood. And the place just happens to be dog friendly too. Sorry for the lack of photos, but I didn't wanna intrude on everyone else's meals. However, if you come here, definitely try the salad with cherries and the venison burger or the pork chop!

Great for pics The pop Benedict was good but not super filling, the eggs well seasoned and good sauce Bacon super bomb, if you like sweet Canadian bacon. Not a fan of the grits Tartar 10/10 easy really good dish to get to share Chile was okay nothing else besides sauce and chips 4/10 Ribeye steak very small like 6 oz steak for $58 it's great but not for the size and quality Great service, really fast and their mixed drinks were bomb too. I liked the melon one 9/10 Overnight oats is good too but on the higher end, 7/10 nothing crazy but still good If I go back the butter, burger and pop Benedict would be the move or bacon
