Each time we have visited this summer it has been disappointing. This time was horrible. Server was extremely argumentative and not helpful at all. There was myself and my two kids. When I went to order, I ordered a cinnamon roll which he told me they were out of. Disappointing but no big deal. So I go ahead and order 2 meals and a cinnamon roll pancake. Our 2 meals come out about 10 minutes before the pancakes. I ask about the pancakes and he tells me that it is my fault. He's like you ordered a cinnamon roll and I told you we were out remember? I am like yea and I immediately put in another order with my food. He goes No you ordered a cinnamon roll first and then I told you no. I'm like I know but then I ordered everything together. It was one conversation. He never left our table. He doubles down and argues with me. No "I am sorry, let me check on it." Just arguing when it made no sense. It was such a terrible experience. I also got my iced coffee after my two meals came out. I asked him if he forgot about my coffee and he told me it was coming and acted annoyed. Slid in here on a Tuesday morning to celebrate my suegra's birthday. It was a chill lil spot. Super busy because it's hyped up and people call it a go to spot in Coronado. The prices are a bit high for a 50s style diner. I would say aesthetically it feels like they put their time in the little details. And so I appreciate that. It's about the entire experience not just the food or wait staff. It's a solid drink list with tons of options. It was a tough decision on what I wanted to drink which to me is a good thing. I went with the Crème Brûlée Latte. It hit the spot. Some of the food coming out didn't look as appetizing but I feel like I lucked out with my selection. I went with the Farmer Benny's Market hash The wait staff was super nice. 8 hour shifts in that environment which is non stop must be tough so I appreciate how chill they were and for continuing to check in on us and not rush us with the I don't feel like I need to go here again. I felt fulfilled coming just once. It was solid but didn't wow me. If you're a native to SD or call this place home, I'd say you should get probably visit to break it to have a change of pace from your usual spots but I wouldn't put it as a place you must bring people who are out of town to. read more

We ordered a bowl of each of the house soup to go and this is how much they gave me. The chili was the only filled bowl container. All the soups are way too salty and the tomato basil is extra sour. In contrast, the gramp's croissant sandwich is completely flavorless and oily. Second time here and this place did not disappoint. Mummy and I came for breakfast on Valentines day! (Her birthday was the day before). We got here at 11am and even though they were busy, we only waited 15 minutes! Dren was 10/10 fantastic. I was an anxious mess about asking for substitutions but he put my mind to ease so quick. He was super attentive, even though he had a full house. The restaurant is a little small so it felt a little loud for a moment, but the music helps you relax and enjoy the vibes of the cute diner aesthetic. I wouldn't have enjoyed eating in such a muggy place. Had to eat outside. Which brings me to my next point, they asked everyone in line in front of me their preference; inside or outside. They literally didn't ask us though. Lol I wouldn't have cared but when I went inside to pee and felt how warm and thick the air was inside, I decided to request outside seating. This review if for their to-go coffee! Make your way around to the right side of the building and you'll find where to place to-go orders. The inside of the diner is so cute and retro, but we just came for a quick pick-me-up. I got their matcha chai with a quarter sweetness and it was so good. My friend got their pumpkin spice latte, and at first it was WAY too sweet. The syrup at the bottom wasn't dissolved at all. But, they kindly remade the order and it was perfect. I would definitely recommend getting reduced sweetness. read more

The coffee!!!!!!!!! It was the best I've had the whole trip. Cute and quaintly placed diner with lots and lots of history. The menu is like a wonderful little book with why this place is historic. I've always loved Clayton's and the vintage vibe and ambiance here. I love the location and the food. This is gonna sound silly but the vintage style coffee cups are my favorite thing. Service is great, especially when you consider how busy they can get being on this touristy island. Tourists aren't the nicest people, let's be honest. Anyway, it's been a long while since I'd been here since I no longer live in "Daygo", but I still always recommend this spot to friends. Having been a regular of Clayton's since a child, I can say that it hasn't lost its appeal. While it may be bustling and tightly packed, the small cafe is a staple in Coronado, with its unique take on delicious diner classics. The ambiance is kitschy and clean with a nice touch of the fresh and homey, not to mention the subtle vintage charm. The service is lacking slightly depending on who you get, but that's not exactly all the time as our waiter was probably just having a bad day, since usually the service is great and the staff is very friendly and helpful. The coffee is always hot and delicious while the food is excellent as well. The milkshakes are served in the old style way and are tasty. Honestly, I feel like this is more of a dessert spot because of all the shake and pie options they have - but the food wasn't bad! Surprisingly, the wait was only 20 minutes! We got lucky enough to get a booth. There were tabletop jukeboxes. So cute! Instead of apologizing the owner seems to be as arrogant as his staff and spewing lies. 1. We put our name on the waiting list for 8 people like everyone and politely waited for more than 30min. 2. The unprofessional staff never asked us how many tables we needed (the chief officer and staff are lying). 3. It's common sense for anyone with a high school degree even for a so called Chief Officer to figure out that a party of 8 people would not fit on a tiny table. That's not our job, it's yours, be professional about it and take responsibility. Most importantly stop lying. 4. Clearly the staff along the owner have zero customer service and do not care about families and children. It shameful to see them lying and unwilling to apologize. To everyone out there, please avoid this arrogant and medicore place at all cost. Also based on the low ratings, the food is as mediocre as the staff and owner. The Homemade Cinnamon Roll was very creamy and the center was warm perfection. Definitely a big shareable size! Got the Breakfast Burrito with chorizo and really enjoyed it. The server hooked us up with lots of sauces/salsa, but the house sauce definitely hit the spot with the burrito. The Chicken Fried Steak and Eggs was a winner as well. Came here on a busy Friday morning and was seated fairly quick. Don't be intimidated by the long line a lot of people bounce and don't wait for their name to be called. Pro tip: be patient. The inside is very cool try to catch a corner seat and see all the food the cooks serve up it's fun stuff. It's nice to see the hustle and bustle of the staff put food on the table for us. Service was chill never had to ask for coffee and they were very cool with requests even with a packed house. I ordered the Chilaquiles and they did not disappoint. I feel like I scored some brownie points adding black beans, grilled onions, and chorizo. I recommend you get that customized. The plate looked so good and it was delicious and actually spicy surprisingly, almost perfect spicy.
