Had a Sunday brunch double date two weekends ago. Upon entering, we had Justin greet us at the door, congratulating my pregnant friend & her husband -- he was extremely welcoming, personable, funny& kind. To our surprise, we were seated immediately (honestly thought we would have to wait a good half hour or so). That's thanks to Justin. Absolutely love the retro diner atmosphere, & especially loved the little touches of Halloween decor. I always appreciate an establishment that takes the time to make the vibes more festive, especially for Halloween I didn't get a chance to get our server's name, but she was quick, attentive, & kind as well. Food & drinks were flavorful & delicious. You can clearly tell that the food here is made with care. Honestly, I didn't expect my first time dining in at Clayton's to be such an exceptional experience but it was. I am not sure how I have spent 10+ years in San Diego and had never been to Claytons! It is an old school diner in Coronado that is definitely worth the wait. We put in our name and you wait outside along the curb, probably for 30-45 minutes (this was on a Sunday morning so it was very busy). We came post a 5k, so we were ready to eat! We got the chicken fried steak and breakfast burrito. The chicken fried steak was hearty with eggs and hashbrowns on the side. The breakfast burrito was also very filling and quality ingredients. This is definitely a diner spot, don't be expecting nice-ties of a boozy brunch spot. That's the charm. read more

Went out to Coronado Island for the day and stopped into this little gem for an early breakfast. Clayton's in an old 50's style dinner that apparently everyone on the island knows about based on the robust business of the locals. I am under the impression that Clayton's has probably been on Coronado since the actual 50's! In any case, this is the place to eat! We ordered the house coffee a breakfast special for my wife which was a large Denver Omelet and I ordered the chicken fried steak and eggs. Well, we wanted a good breakfast, we got one! Both meals were big and tasty. The kind of comfort food/meal you would expect from a place like this. Inexpensive and delicious and well work going back for. While we waited for our meal, we tried on of the gigantic homemade cranberry muffins. Hot and delicious as well! If we were not so stuffed, we would have ordered the homemade apple pie that looked awesome and huge. But another day to have that. If you are on Coronado Island, this is where you would want to have breakfast or an early lunch. I know that next time we are on the island, we will be stopping here! read more

We were initially going to go to the panera across the street to try and be somewhat healthy but realized that this coffee place was a diner and so walked in and had dinner here. The place definitely had a diner feel. There was a classic jukebox using actual records and pastries displayed in a jar. The service was a tag-team style service. The lady who took our order was different from the lady who brought our food and who brought our check. It was kind of odd to be honest. My partner had a hot dog and I had the stack burger. I loved that the battered onion rings were home made and that they had other in-house homemade items like the chicken tenders. My partner said his hot dog was typical and that it was nothing special. My burger was the Clayton's Stacker, which was also pretty typical but the onion rings were noticeably better than other bbq burgers I've had. However, the fries were not well-seasoned and actually pretty bland so they were hard to finish and not very good. I would recommend either ordering another side if someone else is getting them (so you can share) or salting them more yourself. read more

This is a must if you are visiting Coronado. Clayton's has a true 50's feel. The decor and aprons really drive home the vintage feel. They open at 6am which is super helpful for visiting East Coast people. The food and service were excellent. Homemade- yum! We had to come twice while in town for a week. How did I not know this gem was Coronado?? We got received a gift card 2 years ago and decided to give it a try. Damn, I wish we would have a came much sooner. The food is a amazing & there is plenty of seating inside and outside. Our waitresses were both great and helpful. I ordered the breakfast combo with French toast(amazing) also a side of biscuits & gravy(also amazing). My wife had the Reuben sandwich and she enjoyed that as well. We both ordered two specialty coffees that were the best looking cups I've seen at a restaurant. Overall I can't wait to come back for brunch with our family and try something else. My husband loves this brunch spot! He said it's a old fashioned brunch diner, looking like his dad's age. He ordered a breakfast sandwich with bacon and sausages, which is one of the best breakfast sandwiches he's ever had from his own words. I had a veggie omelette with one pancake, I enjoyed it. The pancake is so fluffy! Each order comes with a hash, it is very yummy. We had a great time there for sure. I came here on account of it being in a high visibility area and word of mouth. The ambiance gave off that retro diner feel and I dig that. I came by after a huge organized run near Coronado. I was super hungry afterwards. Saw they had some decent looking breakfast burritos. They have a walk up window so I went for that thinking the service would have been more efficient. Well, it cost me 40 bucks for 2 burritos, a smoothie, and a coffee. A little pricey but it is Coronado. The coffee was really good, check, not hard to mess that up. The smoothie was meh, some sort of gel like chunk similar to boba. Threw off the vibe. Still drinkable The burritos though...I can't speak for my wife and hers, but at $12.99 (plus 3 bucks for protein ) it was filled with a lot of potato that really overtook the whole thing. Very starchy and kind of bland. Luckily their salsa was semi-decent. Also took awhile to get. All in all it's a decent bite but don't get your hopes up for the burrito. You could find something much better at a hole in the wall for half that. read more

This place made my Mother's Day wish come true :) I was looking for a classic diner that served a coffee milkshake (plus the tin side car!) and was stumped to find one in SD. Waitress and hostess were very friendly and patient. Appreciated the kids menu, all day breakfast, and booster seats. The great diner coffee was a bit watery in my opinion. The waffle was amazing but the grits with butter were so bland. They had absolutely no flavor even with the butter and were a bit lumpy. Editing to also add the runner was definitely in a hurry. This is our second time dining at Clayton's Coffee Shop. But this time we drove over 350 miles knowing we had to hit up this place again. We had coffee drinks and pie for appetizers. The pie was just as good as we had remembered. This crust was flaky and tender just as before. The only noticeable difference was dryness. I think on our previous visit the pie must have just been made. On this visit the only thing different must have been a pie that was refrigerated for a day or two. But nonetheless, not disappointed at all. So happy we made it back. We also wanted to eat dinner, as well. I ordered the Reuben Sandwich. It was made well and spot on classic to the core. Also, glad to see a restaurant still filling their sandwich with meat and not cutting corners on portion size. The corned beef was moist and tender. Perfect amount of dressing. I went there this evening for a coffee and some ice cream biggest mistake ever coffees were done. Well ice cream was not. It was melted by time I received it I asked for extra fudge and did not get it. Then the waiter blamed the other lady that was working with him that she didn't bring it out when I was told it is his job not hers, I asked her after he told me she was gonna bring it out and she said she knew nothing about it so the waiter lied I do not recommend this place to anyone ever. There is a great place to get nice ice cream right up the road that gives you perfect ice cream every time that's not melted and they do it right the first time my suggestions don't go here. Food: If greasy junk on dirty cups and filthy plates are your thing, go for it. Personally, I couldn't eat much because everything was so greasy. Service: The servers are nice but the host has no idea what he's doing. He let us in but there were families with small children who were there waiting when we got there and they got upset. Rightfully so. We told the host that they got there before we did and he started acting like we offended his mother and made us wait another 20 minites (out of pettiness perhaps?). Clayton's is a seriously wonderful blast from the past. It's a real old-time coffee shop/diner and if you want nostalgia, run to this restaurant. It has counter and booth seating, and counter top jukeboxes (bring quarters) and the music was from the 50s to 80s. They can make a milkshake the way it used to be made back in the day. Theres even has an old phone booth in the back! We were there for dinner because we had Lambs Players tickets for that night. Our waitress, Hope, was so friendly and sweet. I ordered a grilled sandwich called Grilled Louie (with fries) and it came out so fast I couldn't believe it. Plus it was DELICIOUS. I also treated myself to a hot fudge sundae which was probably the best I've ever had. When we arrived there weren't many people inside but it filled up and I think most were headed to the theater but the service we had was top notch. I highly recommend this nostalgic place! read more

The French toast was ok, a tad dry though. And I'm not sure why restaurants aren't using decent pancake syrup anymore. Today this midwesterner just needed something to remind him of home. I found it at Clayton's Coffee Shop! I sat at the counter, was greeted by a couple of friendly faces and had a nice cup of decaf coffee. No pressure for me to order, I just needed to work on my iPhone for a new film project and was left in peace, other than my refills. My cup never ran dry. I asked about the hot fudge. Was it gooey or syrupy? Was told it's thick and the brownies are quite good as well. Temptation took over and I ordered the Double Fudge Brownie Sundae. The lovely waitress wasn't joking, it was quite large for a single person to consume, but I was up for the task and it was amazing. I left with a very happy feeling and do wish I'd taken a picture of it to share here. I'm looking forward to going back for more great food and great service. read more
