    Huge onion rings!

Great food and great service. We split bacon cheeseburger and got onion rings and fries. Everything was delicious. Staff here is wonderful! Go check them out if you are in the area.

The food here is on point . We got two seats at the counter on a busy Monday lunch--the best seats in the house for catching all the action--and decided to split an order. Despite sharing, we were both more than satisfied. It's the kind of comfort food that hits the spot immediately, and judging by the steady stream of guests on both sides of us asking for to-go boxes, we weren't the only ones who couldn't conquer our plates in one sitting. The space is cozy, to put it mildly. The walkways are a bit cramped, and it's clear that navigating the dining room is a practiced art form. Watching the servers and runners weave through the tight space was impressive; they clearly have a well-rehearsed rhythm for managing the floor without missing a beat, even when things get busy.

    Gramps' Breakfast Croissant Sandwich

I absolutely love Clayton's for breakfast and lunch! A cute little corner diner on the main drag in Coronado, always packed with people waiting to get in. The staff is always kind and professional, and the food is always fantastic! On my most recent visit, I ordered their Gramps' Breakfast Croissant Sandwich. This sandwich was not only delicious, but MASSIVE. I cut it in half and made two meals out of it. The croissant was crispy and delicious and, of course, you can never go wrong with a sandwich that has bacon, eggs, and cheese inside of it. This place is a "must go," so add it to your list if you're in Coronado!

    Sweet potato fries were clutch

This place is iconic in Coronado & worth the wait if there is a line. Great brekkie items, solid coffee, donuts, cinnamon rolls, just clutch. Friendly service & outdoor seating if you have a dog! This year I tried something new - grille cheese (bread is insane), added bacon + fried egg... WOW, did not disssapoint. The crossaint brekkie sandwich is also insane (and YUGE)... love this place

I had a hard time deciding between 4 and 5 stars for this one. I think between the location, food, and general appeal of the place, I should give it 5. Like several other places on this street, this place gets slammed constantly, especially on weekends. Even so, the customer service is super fast and friendly. They really try to stay on top of my coffee cup. The coffee itself is a really smooth and balanced flavor. The traditional diner appearance is also great. The only reason I would give 4 stars would be the chicken in the chicken and waffles.....which is not even bad. I have high standards for this in particular. Thinking about it again, there's a lot of bad chicken in this country, but I've rarely had bad chicken in chicken and waffles. Maybe it's because a breakfast place wouldn't attempt it in the first place if they couldn't make it well. I found this portion to be a bit light on the actual meat. The breading is excellent, but I can see that the meat starts to become drier in the sections where the meat is thicker. And, of course, still a bit lean. I believe chicken for chicken and waffles should be dark meat, like any self respecting Asian should. Lmao. Grits were good too.

their diner is often lined up but the takeout window is nice. I got their famous cinnamon honey latte ($6.49) at half sweet, but something was a little off about the honey? it tasted a little artificial and masked the taste of the coffee

Old style diner that's just fun w/good food. They have outdoor & indoor seating. They also have counter service. We sat outside under an umbrella, it was hot but beautiful in the shade. You can people watch and the area is stunning. We had the bbq bacon burger, fried pickles & the Oreo shake. They were all delicious! The pickles are similar to Disneyland. Our server was great. We will be back!

We came back! Our server was Drew. He is sooo funny. Loved the witty banter and the brief history lesson on the origins of the restaurant. I knew we loved the food from our first visit. But this is now a must stop for us. Quick service. Great tasting food. Loved the 80s music playing.

Came here for Easter Sunday breakfast. Make sure you get here early in the weekends since it fills up fast. It was a beautiful day on Coronado to sit outside and the staff is all super friendly. Of course the donuts are remarkable and fresh. I had the meat looks very omelette and it was superb! Fresh and great combination of sausage, bacon and ham. Definitely a great place to stop for any meal.

Best staff ever! Cutest place in Coronado, we woke up early and walked over so we could get a seat. The inside is an adorable old school looking diner with a great counter to sit out. The music was a little loud for us at 7am so we sat outside to enjoy the weather. Service was immediate and everyone who helped was so genuinely nice. Our server came often to check on us and always had everything we needed. The menu is enormous with options for everyone. I ordered the veggie scramble and my husband an omelette dish on top of biscuits. Everything was great but I was surprised that cheese was not included on my veggie scramble and the potatoes were an interesting paper thin sliced and not crisp version . A great experience and we will definitely be back again.

We came here for breakfast after hearing it's a popular spot, and it did not disappoint. The location on Coronado Island is absolutely beautiful! After eating, you can take a walk to the beach or browse nearby shops, which makes it a great overall experience. Just keep in mind that most parking in the area is limited to two hours. The wait time was decent, but I can imagine it gets very busy on certain days. We were seated outside, and I'd recommend not being discouraged by outdoor seating--the umbrellas can be adjusted for shade--just ask a staff member. The staff was personable, friendly, and respectful, which made the experience even better. The food was delicious! I ordered pancakes, house potatoes, and an iced coffee. My kids had chicken tenders and fries, and the portions were very generous. I also really appreciated the history behind this place and how long it's been around--it adds to the charm. Overall, a great breakfast spot in a beautiful location!

Cornbeef Benedict 5/5 my husband loved it

Our first experience we only ordered from the side window. Today we sat down and ate inside the restaurant. We put our names down on a Friday at 11am. Our wait time for (4) people was 25 minutes. The staff gave us a table that accommodated my baby stroller which was very kind of them. We had our food by 11:45am. Our waitress checked up on us consistently. Rating the food I actually tried - 5/5 Chicken fried steak 5/5 Cornbeef Eggs Benny 1/5 Levi's Banana Ricotta Pecan pancakes - $16.99 for a stack of 2 dinky sized pancakes. The name sounded way better than what was actually served. The ricotta fluff on top was odd and had a baking flour aftertaste. There was zero banana flavor. The pancakes were bland. I was very disappointed. My father in law ordered a burger and my mother in law loved her side of crispy bacon. My husband said the cornbeef hash eggs Benny was great quality!

Clayton's is a quaint coffee shop/diner in the heart of Coronado. It's been around since the 30s (different owners) and has a retro vibe to it with th red vinyl, jukeboxes, and vintage style decor. The music playlist was 80s new wave which was awesome. It's not a big restaurant but there is indoor and outdoor seating. We sat at the u-shaped bar which I find more fun. The service was very friendly and efficient We ordered the ribeye steak and eggs. The steak was okay but the eggs and potatoes were good. We also ordered the corned beef hash eggs Benedict which was really good. The corned beef is homemade and the eggs were perfectly juicy. I replaced the usual potatoes it comes with and had crinkle cut fries. So glad I did. I also had buttermilk pancakes. They were fluffy, yummy, and best of all not dry. Overall we had a great experience here and would return.

Lafayette Beginners Diner…read more Spontaneously, decided to visit Lafayette Hotel yesterday. Walked straight towards Beginners Diner outdoor patio which overlooks the pool, it was crowded. Despite the crowds, there were a few seats available to sit and dine. Usually one must check in with the manager inside the diner, but this time the manager happened to be a few steps away and she said I could sit anywhere I wanted...YAY! I had my pup Fendi in tow and we sat down for a while to enjoy the usual cool music and be voyeurs. As with most diners, it would be better if all the selections on the menu is available to order 24/7. Many items are only available to order during particular times. It was a sunny hot San Diego day, which called for an icy mocktail, a Greek salad and small french fries. The yogurt dill sauce enhanced the taste of both the salad and fries... so good. Service from the manager and servers were cordial, attentive and friendly. A bowl of water was offered for my baby and I always appreciate that extra effort. Because of a much improved overall experience and positive vibes, it merits this review and recommend.

There were only a few stools available at the counter, but I was greeted right away by the hostess and seated immediately. A waiter quickly brought me a glass of water and a menu. I ordered the: * Country Fried Steak (3/5): The breading was nice and crispy, but the steak itself was pretty mediocre. It also didn't come with nearly enough gravy, so I asked another server for extra, and she was kind enough to bring me some. The meal comes with two sides. You can choose from creamed spinach, green beans, sautéed corn, or broccoli along with a carb of mashed potatoes, a baked potato, fries, or onion rings. I chose: * Sautéed Corn: Unfortunately, this had a strange flavor. It really could have used some butter and salt. * Mashed Potatoes: The potatoes themselves were fine, but the gravy wasn't the traditional style you'd expect with mashed potatoes, and I wasn't a fan. One positive was how quickly the food came out; it took less than 10 minutes from ordering to being served. The prices are definitely on the higher end. My country fried steak was $32, and my total came to just over $40 with tip. One thing that stood out was how disorganized the service felt. There was a hostess, around five different servers, and even the manager helping on the floor. I never had one dedicated server throughout my meal. One person took my order, another brought the extra gravy, the manager delivered my food, and someone else cashed me out. Even though it was busy, it's not a very large restaurant, so the service felt unnecessarily chaotic. They could definitely improve the overall customer experience with better organization. Parking can also be difficult, so keep that in mind if you're visiting during peak hours. Overall, it's a cute spot, and I appreciated finding country fried steak since it's not something you see on many menus anymore. Unfortunately, both the food and the service were pretty average. I'm glad I tried it, but I don't think it's a place I'd go out of my way to return to.

Umami Brussels Sprouts (10/10) - The best Brussels sprouts I've had in San Diego so far! They had a nice crisp to them and weren't too oily or anything, but had a LOT of flavor, which I love. It didn't just taste dry and salty like Brussels sprouts sometimes can. Definitely one of my favorites. Molten Butter Cake (10/10) - This dessert is an angel food cake with pretzel toffee and caramel inside, then it goes in the oven to get warm before being brought out and topped with vanilla bean gelato and caramel. It was so well balanced. It looked really sweet, but because of how balanced all the flavors were, it didn't actually taste overly sweet. I don't even like caramel and it was SO good in this. The outside was soft, and the toffee and pretzel inside gave it a nice crunch. I really liked the combination of the soft cake with the crunchy pretzel toffee. Wagyu Cheeseburger with fries (8.5/10) - The patty had a smoky, grilled type of flavor that was really yummy. It was a good portion and was made really well. The fries were also a decent addition as a side choice. Egg Sandwich (8.5/10) - Pretty basic, but really well made and put together. The bun was a bit toasted, so it wasn't super soft and had a slight crispness to it, which I liked. The flavors were really well balanced and it was honestly so good. Service: The best service! Even when it wasn't a staff member in charge of our table, we were frequently checked on and everyone was super attentive and conversational, which made the experience a lot more personal and better. I love being able to share a laugh and have a conversation with the staff. The staff member responsible for our table was Heider, and he was super attentive, helpful, conversational, and patient. We also loved meeting Sasha! She's super nice and conversational as well. Thank you for having us! Ambiance: Such a nice restaurant inside and outside. We got the patio high top seating and it was really nice. It was hot out, but the big umbrella helped. It's super busy, but it still felt nice outside, and everything looked super clean and aesthetic. Really nice vibes overall.

We were seated quickly which was a wonderful thing considering we had 3 kids with us. Our server was Frenchie and she was great. Our food was surprisingly hot. Our first notice to the oddness of the night was the balloon guy. Throughout the night we noticed the servers would form groups of 5 plus to sing birthday songs for the birthday kids. When it came to our turn, we had only 2 servers show up to sing for us. Frenchie even yelled out for help with no one coming to help out with making this evening special for us. One guy came by but quickly made a left to go into another area. Our little guy didn't notice because Frenchie made him feel special. As we sat there questioning what just happened, we noticed that 4 tables down someone was getting sung to. Guess how many were there singing? A minimum of 5 servers. We also noticed that we were not offered the birthday hats that that same party received. We asked to speak with a manager regarding what just happened. Ricky made excuses for what we observed and how we felt regarding what happened. My wife got upset at him minimizing our experience. When he noticed her tone change, he changed accordingly. He recommended we speak with the GM. We paid $200 for our meal and nowhere in that amount did we ask that we be looked over and go unnoticed. From where we sat, I was able to see the majority of the area. I don't know if there is a moral to this story or a silver lining but this experience ruined our evening and a little boy's 7th birthday. Rudford's became option #2. Open 24/7 and a wide selection of food choices, it seemed like our best option. Chicken fried steak sounded like a good choice. My wife chose the Reuben's sandwich with crinkle cut fries. My wife wasn't too impressed with her sandwich but my chicken fried steak was tender and the gravy was flavorful with a touch of pepper. I added a slice of blueberry pie to take back to the hotel. Our server was very pleasant and did a great job of checking on us to make sure everything was good. I was very satisfied with my dining experience and was happy to find a place open 24/7 the next time I'm in San Diego if I need to find a place to eat after normal dining hours. The parking lot is on the small side so it might be difficult to find a spot during peak hours. Definitely a place to keep in mind if you're looking for decent coffee shop fare.

I've only been here a couple times. The food is OK, but…read moreIt's probably because it's 24 hours. As to the servers, they take FOREVER to come and take your order. It took aN HOUR to get our food and they were not busy. Just talking to eachother. I think the one of the male servers with the "dog choker chain" is extremely rude and unprofessional, wasn't welcoming or accommodating. I dread going to places with poor service. We did not get checked on AT ALL no matter how many times we left our drinks at the end of the table, Getting a refill was nearly impossible let alone asking for condiments, napkins, or anything else. if you know tips are a big part of your job why wouldn't you be on point with your customer service? Or work elsewhere.

This is the very first pity 5 stars I've ever done. I didn't order any food nor any drinks. So to…read moregive it anything less than five stars is completely unfair. The service was excellent so that's all I'm going off of. The menu did look pretty fire though, so I'd be willing to give it another shot cause for all intents and purposes, the other people in the restaurant seemed to be really enjoying the food! But anyways... I'm a skillet cookie connoisseur. Any place that has a skillet cookie, I'm going there SOLEY to order it. If I ever get married, instead of having cake, my guests will be having skillet cookies for dessert instead. Some might say I love skillet cookies even more than Scottie Scheffler. My love for skillet cookies runs deeper than the Mariana trench and I've been to more than (at least) 11 restaurants to exclusively try them out. With that out of the way... I'm horrified to report this is the worst skillet cookie I've ever had in my entire life. It somehow felt overcooked, yet undercooked at the same time. It was also like they cooked it at an angle. Because it awkwardly occupied 3/4ths of the skillet. It had the consistency of a cake but the taste of a cookie? It was like they couldn't decide whether or not they wanted to make a cake or a cookie. So instead, they decided to half bake something that was in between. I couldn't believe it. It was also completely lacking in the chocolate chip department. All in all, this skillet cookie had a worse performance than Michael Jordan during his high school varsity tryouts. I'll admit it too... I completely lied to the waitress when she came over and asked me how the cookie was. Instead of telling her the truth, I gave her two thumbs up and said, " it's good!".... It was not good. It was terrible! I'm a coward.

The concept of the open windows is really cool and gives the place a nice atmosphere…read more Unfortunately, the food was pretty bland and, in my opinion, not worth the $21 price tag. The burger wasn't the worst burger I've ever tasted, but was drenched in mustard and grease. The fries were bland and burnt, and the fish and chips had virtually no seasoning or flavor. Our server was sweet and somewhat attentive. She checked in right after bringing our food and then we didn't see her again until we were done eating and out of drinks. I'm not saying I wouldn't recommend giving it a try, but at that price point, I expected better quality food.
