During my misspent youth I remember dining at Clayton's in the 60's. Since my wife works in Coronado, she noticed the lines of customers waiting to dine at Clayton's, and decided we should go there early on a Sunday morning. All the tables were full, but the greeter offered us seats at the U-shaped counter. We were served coffee and ice water very promptly. That's when the problems started. My coffee cup (not really a mug, sort of a tea cup) had a lipstick stain on it, which I noticed after taking a sip. The coffee was not very hot, and frankly, not very good. Our server, Dren H., immediately replaced the cup with a clean one. Sadly, the replacement coffee was still not good at all. The menu calls it "great diner coffee", but it was not hot, and rather bitter. Tasted like the grounds were brewed twice, actually. My order was Eggs Benedict ($13.99) which arrived quickly. And yet, it was barely warm. The eggs were overcooked, making the yokes semi-solid. The hashbrowns were not sufficiently browned, tasting of raw potato. The portion size could never be called generous. We were both disappointed, and found out the hard way that sometimes long lines do not necessarily equate to a great diner experience. read more

Had a lovely dinner at Clayton's, wasn't too packed, and such a unique place as you don't really get to see diners anymore. We tried some of their drinks, burger and chili. No complaints on the burger but the chili was pretty salty. I loved the white hot chocolate. Was definitely sweet but tasted amazing, especially when the weather was chilly outside. Sadly this place has left me disappointed. I work at Naval Station North Island. I decided to grab breakfast before going to work. I called at 10 am and was told it would be ready at 1015. I get there right on time and went to the pick up window and was told I had to wait in line...even though my food I called ahead...so now I have to wait an additional 10 min just to pick up food that was ready. I asked for the pancake combo with bacon and to add sausage. I open my cold food to find that I didn't even get the bacon I paid for. Never again will I waste my time at this place. I will tell all of my friends to never go there. Had high hopes that I found a great breakfast place close to work but sadly Perry's Cafe is still king for Breakfast in SD. read more

I am not sure how I have spent 10+ years in San Diego and had never been to Claytons! It is an old school diner in Coronado that is definitely worth the wait. We put in our name and you wait outside along the curb, probably for 30-45 minutes (this was on a Sunday morning so it was very busy). We came post a 5k, so we were ready to eat! We got the chicken fried steak and breakfast burrito. The chicken fried steak was hearty with eggs and hashbrowns on the side. The breakfast burrito was also very filling and quality ingredients. This diner is as charming as the city of Coronado. There is a lot of quaint history and nostalgia inside if you take a few minutes to look around. Service is fantastic. The menu is extensive and it's really what you find in a typical diner. I was here for breakfast and plan to come back for both bfast and lunch. I'll break it down. Service = 5, Ambiance = 5, Menu options =5, Quality = 5, Price/Value = 2. My order of cinnamon pancakes at $14 was a ripoff quite frankly. It was two normal pancakes drizzled with a cinnamon syrup (vs swirling it into the batter) which tasted more sugary than cinnamon. The cream cheese frosting was excellent but I like maple syrup so I had to order this as a side, at $3.50. So pancakes for over $17- for real?And, the syrup had NO maple flavor, all corn syrup if you ask me. For that price I should have it served by a squirrel who tapped it from the tree.... Despite my disappointment in this item, as I looked around I definitely had food envy. I think I just ordered the wrong item. There were other menu items, that not only looked better but were at a more reasonable price. Ridiculous that you have to pay extra for the syrup to go with your pancakes- beware. The base pancakes were very good so I recommend getting just that. The side of bacon, at $7 was excellent- I asked for crispy but not burnt and they delivered. And I got 4 pieces so it made that price a 'little' more tolerable. They have a booming business - there's a long line but they work fast (without pushing you out of your table or making you feel rushed) and the quality of food was good. Too bad they don't have a cinnamon French toast because they need to ditch the cinnamon pancakes. Get the cinnamon roll instead. What bothered me was that for breakfast I felt nickeled and dimed- and we all know bfast food is not that costly. And with their turnover, they are not hurting. I spent time exploring the lunch menu and want to come back. I'll get other bfast items next time too. Loved that they sold baked goods and pies too. My review is mixed, based on the bad cinnamon pancakes and the prices. I'm looking forward to trying again, my suggestion is to ask what's most popular and take a look at what others are ordering to help guide you. Love that they have hash browns too- but you have to ask for "shredded hash browns" otherwise you'll just get their crispy diced bfast potatoes. Super cute, traditional diner with a nice menu. Just an overpriced bfast. I'm sure the tourists won't mind as you are typically willing to pay more when in vacationland. I still recommend coming and when I get a dish that is not only great but great for the price, I'll write another review. Come but ask questions and understand what you're getting. *Update after the owner's reply* If I could downgrade my rating to a 2 based on their response alone, I would. Yes, the value was so important to me that it pushed the overall rating to a 3. And, I didn't realize business owners could tell yelpers not to write a review. I stand by the fact that the maple syrup did not taste like maple, at all, and that it was outrageous to charge extra for it. I decided to look around at other breakfast restaurants, in Coronado only, including the Del and not one, not 1 out of the 7 charged extra for maple syrup. And as for your affordable prices, 6/7 charged less for pancakes. Everyone likes good food, great service and value for the price. I left feeling nickle and dimed thus the rating. The response which is a part of service gets a low rating there now. Oh, I'll come back so I can compare and, write another review. read more

Went out to Coronado Island for the day and stopped into this little gem for an early breakfast. Clayton's in an old 50's style dinner that apparently everyone on the island knows about based on the robust business of the locals. I am under the impression that Clayton's has probably been on Coronado since the actual 50's! In any case, this is the place to eat! We ordered the house coffee a breakfast special for my wife which was a large Denver Omelet and I ordered the chicken fried steak and eggs. Well, we wanted a good breakfast, we got one! Both meals were big and tasty. The kind of comfort food/meal you would expect from a place like this. Inexpensive and delicious and well work going back for. While we waited for our meal, we tried on of the gigantic homemade cranberry muffins. Hot and delicious as well! If we were not so stuffed, we would have ordered the homemade apple pie that looked awesome and huge. But another day to have that. If you are on Coronado Island, this is where you would want to have breakfast or an early lunch. I know that next time we are on the island, we will be stopping here! read more

So when I saw this place I only saw coffee shop. Every time I saw this place it has a giant line out the door. I always went to Starbucks and figured I would do it when I had time. Finally had the time and I wish I would have gone there more. The coffee is amazing!!! I had the Mexican mocha, the Cinnamon Honey Latte for my coffee. Then on top of that they also served breakfast and lunch items. I was awestruck with the amount of food on my plate. I had the Chef Luis Chilequilas it was very good and spicey, I love spice so fair warning to those who can't handle the heat. Everything was amazing, and more than enough food, I couldn't eat it all. On top of that I did get there Apple pie, I had it to go, so I didn't get the ice cream and didn't have it there while it was warm so I won't rate this because I didn't eat it as intended. It was good but I am sure it would have been better if I ate it at the restaurant. Had a Sunday brunch double date two weekends ago. Upon entering, we had Justin greet us at the door, congratulating my pregnant friend & her husband -- he was extremely welcoming, personable, funny& kind. To our surprise, we were seated immediately (honestly thought we would have to wait a good half hour or so). That's thanks to Justin. Absolutely love the retro diner atmosphere, & especially loved the little touches of Halloween decor. I always appreciate an establishment that takes the time to make the vibes more festive, especially for Halloween I didn't get a chance to get our server's name, but she was quick, attentive, & kind as well. Food & drinks were flavorful & delicious. You can clearly tell that the food here is made with care. Honestly, I didn't expect my first time dining in at Clayton's to be such an exceptional experience but it was. We were initially going to go to the panera across the street to try and be somewhat healthy but realized that this coffee place was a diner and so walked in and had dinner here. The place definitely had a diner feel. There was a classic jukebox using actual records and pastries displayed in a jar. The service was a tag-team style service. The lady who took our order was different from the lady who brought our food and who brought our check. It was kind of odd to be honest. My partner had a hot dog and I had the stack burger. I loved that the battered onion rings were home made and that they had other in-house homemade items like the chicken tenders. My partner said his hot dog was typical and that it was nothing special. My burger was the Clayton's Stacker, which was also pretty typical but the onion rings were noticeably better than other bbq burgers I've had. However, the fries were not well-seasoned and actually pretty bland so they were hard to finish and not very good. I would recommend either ordering another side if someone else is getting them (so you can share) or salting them more yourself. read more

Clayton's Coffee Shop is a cute retro diner in Coronado from the 1940s. The decor inside is all still themed from that era. I came with my friend last weekend on Sunday for a late brunch. They have a central seating area that looks onto the kitchen area where the orders are prepared. There's mini jukeboxes that line the countertop as well as dessert displays for the day that vary from muffins, cupcakes, cookies etc. I ordered the breakfast croissant sandwich that had bacon, eggs and cheese. I honestly didn't really enjoy it, it turned out to be really dry. I would recommend ordering something else. My friend had eaten prior to our visit so he ended up just getting the cookie milkshake which he said he didn't really like. Truthfully, we didn't really enjoy the taste of our orders, it wasn't bad but just not delicious. Service was pretty awesome, the waitresses were all attentive. One of them even took her time to let me know all the dessert offerings they had in the different displays. If I were to come back I'd probably order a slice of their carrot cake or a cinnamon roll next time. We still enjoyed our visit became of the nostalgic feel of the diner. I would say that the theme/decor would be 5/5 but the food is like a 3/5. read more

How did I not know this gem was Coronado?? We got received a gift card 2 years ago and decided to give it a try. Damn, I wish we would have a came much sooner. The food is a amazing & there is plenty of seating inside and outside. Our waitresses were both great and helpful. I ordered the breakfast combo with French toast(amazing) also a side of biscuits & gravy(also amazing). My wife had the Reuben sandwich and she enjoyed that as well. We both ordered two specialty coffees that were the best looking cups I've seen at a restaurant. Overall I can't wait to come back for brunch with our family and try something else. Vintage, cozy and Nastalgic! By far one of the best coffee shops I have visited. I had a veggie omelette and added their spicy sausage which is made in house. My omelet arrived piping hot and looked delicious. It was big considering it was a 2 egg omelette. My first bite was delicious and my last bite was even better. The coffee was great and it's bottomless. My server Emilia was fast, courteous and very attentive. His customer service was warm and welcoming. Though the place was very busy I only waited about 5mins to be seated. I was welcomed and offered my drinks within 4mins of sitting down at my cozy table. I got my omelette in about 8mins and it was perfect. The homemade potatoes were quite tasty and different from the normal hash browns or square potato look. This was a great choice for brunch and I would recommend to everyone visiting Coronado Ca especially for the Nostalgic setting. Definitely a 5 star restaurant in my opinion. read more

My husband loves this brunch spot! He said it's a old fashioned brunch diner, looking like his dad's age. He ordered a breakfast sandwich with bacon and sausages, which is one of the best breakfast sandwiches he's ever had from his own words. I had a veggie omelette with one pancake, I enjoyed it. The pancake is so fluffy! Each order comes with a hash, it is very yummy. We had a great time there for sure.
