I came here on account of it being in a high visibility area and word of mouth. The ambiance gave off that retro diner feel and I dig that. I came by after a huge organized run near Coronado. I was super hungry afterwards. Saw they had some decent looking breakfast burritos. They have a walk up window so I went for that thinking the service would have been more efficient. Well, it cost me 40 bucks for 2 burritos, a smoothie, and a coffee. A little pricey but it is Coronado. The coffee was really good, check, not hard to mess that up. The smoothie was meh, some sort of gel like chunk similar to boba. Threw off the vibe. Still drinkable The burritos though...I can't speak for my wife and hers, but at $12.99 (plus 3 bucks for protein ) it was filled with a lot of potato that really overtook the whole thing. Very starchy and kind of bland. Luckily their salsa was semi-decent. Also took awhile to get. All in all it's a decent bite but don't get your hopes up for the burrito. You could find something much better at a hole in the wall for half that. read more

My husband and I come to Claytons frequently and we use to order individual meal but lately we haven't been able to eat everything. Now, we order a cup of soup each, and share a sandwich. This place made my Mother's Day wish come true :) I was looking for a classic diner that served a coffee milkshake (plus the tin side car!) and was stumped to find one in SD. Waitress and hostess were very friendly and patient. Appreciated the kids menu, all day breakfast, and booster seats. The great diner coffee was a bit watery in my opinion. The waffle was amazing but the grits with butter were so bland. They had absolutely no flavor even with the butter and were a bit lumpy. Editing to also add the runner was definitely in a hurry. The French toast was ok, a tad dry though. And I'm not sure why restaurants aren't using decent pancake syrup anymore. I went there this evening for a coffee and some ice cream biggest mistake ever coffees were done. Well ice cream was not. It was melted by time I received it I asked for extra fudge and did not get it. Then the waiter blamed the other lady that was working with him that she didn't bring it out when I was told it is his job not hers, I asked her after he told me she was gonna bring it out and she said she knew nothing about it so the waiter lied I do not recommend this place to anyone ever. There is a great place to get nice ice cream right up the road that gives you perfect ice cream every time that's not melted and they do it right the first time my suggestions don't go here. Food: If greasy junk on dirty cups and filthy plates are your thing, go for it. Personally, I couldn't eat much because everything was so greasy. Service: The servers are nice but the host has no idea what he's doing. He let us in but there were families with small children who were there waiting when we got there and they got upset. Rightfully so. We told the host that they got there before we did and he started acting like we offended his mother and made us wait another 20 minites (out of pettiness perhaps?). Clayton's is a seriously wonderful blast from the past. It's a real old-time coffee shop/diner and if you want nostalgia, run to this restaurant. It has counter and booth seating, and counter top jukeboxes (bring quarters) and the music was from the 50s to 80s. They can make a milkshake the way it used to be made back in the day. Theres even has an old phone booth in the back! We were there for dinner because we had Lambs Players tickets for that night. Our waitress, Hope, was so friendly and sweet. I ordered a grilled sandwich called Grilled Louie (with fries) and it came out so fast I couldn't believe it. Plus it was DELICIOUS. I also treated myself to a hot fudge sundae which was probably the best I've ever had. When we arrived there weren't many people inside but it filled up and I think most were headed to the theater but the service we had was top notch. I highly recommend this nostalgic place! read more

Today this midwesterner just needed something to remind him of home. I found it at Clayton's Coffee Shop! I sat at the counter, was greeted by a couple of friendly faces and had a nice cup of decaf coffee. No pressure for me to order, I just needed to work on my iPhone for a new film project and was left in peace, other than my refills. My cup never ran dry. I asked about the hot fudge. Was it gooey or syrupy? Was told it's thick and the brownies are quite good as well. Temptation took over and I ordered the Double Fudge Brownie Sundae. The lovely waitress wasn't joking, it was quite large for a single person to consume, but I was up for the task and it was amazing. I left with a very happy feeling and do wish I'd taken a picture of it to share here. I'm looking forward to going back for more great food and great service. read more

Came in for breakfast after a morning stroll on Coronado beach. I've seen this place for years and so glad I finally got a chance to try. It's a small diner with cute décor: jukeboxes, red vinyl seats/chairs, cool tin ceiling, fresh flowers at every table and friendly and courteous staff. Since we came during the pandemic, menu was very limited so I had the 1 Egg Breakfast (over-easy egg, toast, sausage, and hash browns). I really didn't care for the hash browns since it was just round, slices of potato and not the traditional hash browns that I'm used to. My bf had had corn-beef hash, which he liked. Overall, i love the experience and food was decent. Would definitely stop by again. read more

The walk ways are a bit tight so sometimes when the servers as bring in the food it can feel a little crowded. There were so many great food options. I had the fried chicken sandwich, which had creamed corn on top and a side of fries or coleslaw. My friends got the chicken and waffles and fries which the two of them split and enjoyed. We wanted to go to the bakery across the street but saw this place and decided to try it out. Everybody wanted to dine inside since it was cold and gloomy, so we went for outside. It was very windy and the hostess asked for our drinks and brought them right away. The server took a long time to come and take our order. We asked a few times for our order to be taken. I read on here that the huevos rancheros were one of the. Eat things and my husband had the eggs with gravy. The breakfast came in immediately. Today we drive down to San Diego to visit our daughter and one of our favorite places for lunch is Clayton's. It was so busy but we were seated within 10 minutes at the counter. We placed our order, all is good. It was taking awhile for our food so we ordered a cinnamon roll which we saw on a plate at the counter. It took 15 minutes to get, warmed up of course, but man, it was worth the wait!!! Best cinnamon roll I have ever had. In all it took 40 minutes to get our food but everything was delicious. My husband got the chili burger, food was lukewarm but good. My daughter and I shared a turkey avocado sandwich which was good, not much mayo so I asked for more, still very good. My granddaughter got a Açaí bowl, which was amazing. We have been here several times, and most days that doesn't take this long to get our food, but hey, during the holidays it is to be expected. We still love Clayton's, service was outstanding. We will definitely be back but after the holidays, of course! read more

And last time we were here, we actually had a Thanksgiving. Dinner here is such a cool welcoming place to walk into. Definitely feel like you've gone back in time. Service is good and friendly. After our horrible lunch, we were ready for a real pick me up. I ordered the chocolate Hershey shake. Am I friend order to cup of coffee. I asked our waiter if he would split it. There was plenty of it if you don't want to drink 2 shakes share with a friend. If you haven't been here, check it out. What happened to this place! :( my family and relatives have been coming here since the 80s and 90s and the 2000s and it is so bad now! The Mexican takeout used to be so good and now it's bland and not fresh. The diner itself used to have so much charm and now it's foo foo and extremely expensive. I totally know and understand prices are obviously not gonna be the same as the 80s,90s and early 2000s... but the 2 egg breakfast with bacon is $17??? Wth. The food is boring and mediocre now. So sad. I asked and they got a new owner it seems around 2010 or something. Really sad this place used to be such a staple to go to when visiting. read more

This is our second time dining at Clayton's Coffee Shop. But this time we drove over 350 miles knowing we had to hit up this place again. We had coffee drinks and pie for appetizers. The pie was just as good as we had remembered. This crust was flaky and tender just as before. The only noticeable difference was dryness. I think on our previous visit the pie must have just been made. On this visit the only thing different must have been a pie that was refrigerated for a day or two. But nonetheless, not disappointed at all. So happy we made it back. We also wanted to eat dinner, as well. I ordered the Reuben Sandwich. It was made well and spot on classic to the core. Also, glad to see a restaurant still filling their sandwich with meat and not cutting corners on portion size. The corned beef was moist and tender. Perfect amount of dressing.
