This shop is so cute! I loved the aesthetic and the ambiance was very friendly! The service was great. The walk ways are a bit tight so sometimes when the servers as bring in the food it can feel a little crowded. There were so many great food options. I had the fried chicken sandwich, which had creamed corn on top and a side of fries or coleslaw. My friends got the chicken and waffles and fries which the two of them split and enjoyed. What happened to this place! :( my family and relatives have been coming here since the 80s and 90s and the 2000s and it is so bad now! The Mexican takeout used to be so good and now it's bland and not fresh. The diner itself used to have so much charm and now it's foo foo and extremely expensive. I totally know and understand prices are obviously not gonna be the same as the 80s,90s and early 2000s... but the 2 egg breakfast with bacon is $17??? Wth. The food is boring and mediocre now. So sad. I asked and they got a new owner it seems around 2010 or something. Really sad this place used to be such a staple to go to when visiting. read more

Came in for breakfast after a morning stroll on Coronado beach. I've seen this place for years and so glad I finally got a chance to try. It's a small diner with cute décor: jukeboxes, red vinyl seats/chairs, cool tin ceiling, fresh flowers at every table and friendly and courteous staff. Since we came during the pandemic, menu was very limited so I had the 1 Egg Breakfast (over-easy egg, toast, sausage, and hash browns). I really didn't care for the hash browns since it was just round, slices of potato and not the traditional hash browns that I'm used to. My bf had had corn-beef hash, which he liked. We wanted to go to the bakery across the street but saw this place and decided to try it out. Everybody wanted to dine inside since it was cold and gloomy, so we went for outside. It was very windy and the hostess asked for our drinks and brought them right away. The server took a long time to come and take our order. We asked a few times for our order to be taken. I read on here that the huevos rancheros were one of the. Eat things and my husband had the eggs with gravy. The breakfast came in immediately. This place is awesome!! Fun 80s diner vibes with friendly servers and amazing food! Not only is the food extremely tasty, but the portion sizes are huge!First time in a long time that any of us haven't been able to finish our meals due to being so full. Only had about a 10 minute wait for a party of 4 on a Friday morning and the food came out very quickly. Today we drive down to San Diego to visit our daughter and one of our favorite places for lunch is Clayton's. It was so busy but we were seated within 10 minutes at the counter. We placed our order, all is good. It was taking awhile for our food so we ordered a cinnamon roll which we saw on a plate at the counter. It took 15 minutes to get, warmed up of course, but man, it was worth the wait!!! Best cinnamon roll I have ever had. In all it took 40 minutes to get our food but everything was delicious. My husband got the chili burger, food was lukewarm but good. My daughter and I shared a turkey avocado sandwich which was good, not much mayo so I asked for more, still very good. My granddaughter got a Açaí bowl, which was amazing. We have been here several times, and most days that doesn't take this long to get our food, but hey, during the holidays it is to be expected. We still love Clayton's, service was outstanding. We will definitely be back but after the holidays, of course! read more

Had the huevos rancheros, I thought they were really good and my other half had the chilaquiles, also bomb but very spicy prices are fair(cheap compared to most of the other breakfast places we looked at). The food is so good. I love the chili and the real roasted turkey sandwiches. The service is quite quick and you get what you want. The ambiance is 50s dining and so fun . It's very busy but worth the wait to get in. Once you get in your waitress or waiter is there to take your drink order and than your food order. It comes pretty quickly. There's a diner in town named after a car, a Chevy to be exact. You know the one I mean. A really fun place to be sure. But if you want the REAL THING, head on over to Clayton's Coffee Shop in Coronado. The place is almost always crowded. There is a reason for that. The food is great, the atmosphere is friendly and kinda funky, and the servers are knowledgeable and efficient. Knowledge and efficiency are important, but if the servers aren't friendly, it's a waste of time. Last Friday, our server was a bubbly young woman by the name of Stephanie, but she goes by Steph. Talk about a great combination of knowledge, efficiency, and a great attitude! Steph demonstrates all of that. She was so much fun...giggling and full of smiles! She took our drink orders (a hot cappuccino and an iced vanilla cinnamon latte), after which she took our orders. I ordered a cheeseburger and fries from the kid's menu. They allow people over 65 to do that. My husband-be wanted a waffle and sausage and eggs. Steph suggested a different way to order what he wanted and it was cheaper. We finished our meal and left full and satisfied after enjoying the charged atmosphere and Steph's effervescent personality. She even been agreed to pose for a picture for my review of Clayton's Coffee Shop. I've been going to Clayton's for years and it'speople like Steph that will keep me coming back! Go there! Came to Coronado for the day and stopped here to eat. This place is so good. The breakfast burrito was huge but very tasty. The iced vanilla latte and MK cold brew and both here delicious. Disclaimer: I apologize ahead if this review seems aggressive but it's coming from a caffeine deprived individual. This business is very misleading... Not sure I would consider this place a coffee shop. This rating is strictly based on the coffee but I didn't even want to order food here after the coffee disaster. Pros: Great location. Cons: Coffee shop? I've had 7/11 coffee better than this place. Coming here was such a bad idea considering there is an actual coffee shop across the street that I passed on. First off, I usually only judge coffee establishments based on their black coffee but we were feeling frisky today. Second, they didn't have what I originally ordered which was a Mexican mocha. So I opted for a regular mocha and my wife ordered a vanilla latte instead. They both came out in 5 seconds. Yikes, how sway?! Red Flag or in this case pre-made/machine made flag. Tasted like I was drinking watered down chocolate milk. My brother-in-law did order the cold brew and said it was nice and strong but this guy would eat a cardboard box so can't take his opinion to heart. No offense!! Overall: Not sure how this place earned a 4 star and I'm hoping it's because the food is better than their coffee. Hard Pass! read more

First time into this spot and the vibe is pretty cool. Old school diner feel and look which is my style for sure. I had the Florentine Benny and it was ok. The potatoes were a bit eh, but overall wasn't bad. Latte was great. I plan on coming back here and trying more of their menu because I've never heard anything bad about this place. Good vibes, good service, good atmosphere. No plugs to charge anything tho so doing some work here was harder than expected, in case that's what you're looking for too! read more

We love coming here and the food is very very good. 4 stars because the waiters will kind of forget about you after a while so they don't refill your coffee and check on you to see if you need anything as often as other places do so there's room for improvement. What a cute place! It has a diner esthetic with good food. I'm always suspicious of diners: you either get basic bland food or something diarrhea inducing. We ordered the cinnamon roll pancakes and the biscuits and gravy which, comes with potatoes and eggs. The pancakes came with a gooey cinnamon sugar glaze on top and syrup on the side. They were excellent without the syrup. The biscuits and gravy were good but the biscuits were a bit thin with just a few chunks of sausage. I was a fan of the potatoes- they can really drag down a meal if they're undercooked, bland or taste like oil. These were sliced (I think), crispy and seasoned. Oh! And they had great coffee too! Really good food - we loved the breakfast sandwich on an English muffin, and also the carnitas and chorizo hash. All yum!! Excellent coffee too. Went to Clayton's about 11:00 and put our name on the list. Julia was taking names and giving estimates for waiting time. Watching the servers cleaning tables...there was no time spared. Julia was very patient with all the people questioning re: time. When we were called, we were fortunate to be able to sit at a table. Dren. was very fast in preparing the table. Because of the large number of people, the kitchen was very busy as well. Dren was very good at assuring our requests were met. Julia and Dren are exceptional employees. The food was good as well. On our way to The Henry, we walked past what we thought was a little gem in the village. We decided to go in instead of The Henry. Boy was that a mistake. We sat at the counter and were greeted by our server. Our drinks were served promptly. After that is when everything went downhill. It took 15 minutes to take our order. Another 20 to get our food. My sandwich on toasted sourdough was cold and hard as a board. I asked them to change the bread. The kitchen only changed the top slice of bread. I sent it back again. Third time, sandwich comes back after being thrown on the panini press. It was a cold sandwich with toasted bread. At this point, I was beyond annoyed. Totally unacceptable. I absolutely recommend this place to anyone visiting! The menu is great with lots of options and great prices considering everything is so fresh and the portions are huge! This place is very popular so it is almost always crazy busy but luckily I was able to be seated right away (party of 2 made it easy) we sat in the center on the counter, and as this place is very small / tight inside and of course overwhelming to the staff you do hear their back & fourth miscommunication stress talk, I completely understand as i've worked in the food industry but when you have customers sitting literally a foot away in front of you maybe it isn't the best time to go back & fourth over why one or the other didn't mention a table was seated and has been waiting to get help.. "but I did tell you dude" "no you didn't just stop" umm awkward!! There is also a take out window on the side of the building! i've used this window the past 3 days to get my PHENOMENAL coffee! As a visitor from seattle it is extremely hard to find decent coffee around here but this place is the best tasting coffee i've had out here! The same gal has helped me at the window everyday and she is really sweet (never caught her name) but there is another girl who works in the back that has occasionally called out my orders to go with not so much patience or a smile. I love grabbing my coffee and breakfast saying a big thank you to the staff as many of them are very sweet considering the high volume they get, but the occasional gal who calls my orders always huffs away and ignores when i'm saying thank you...very rude. All in all this has really been my favorite spot here in coronado and due to the minor staffing issue I gave it a 4, food/drinks/prices is definitely a 5 though!! This place was great! The cutest diner! LOCATION: It's right on the corner so you have many options in where to park. We parked on the street and pain the meter. It was like $.50 for 2 hrs! They also have benches outside to wait to be called. FOOD: Food was delicious and was made super fast! The price was super reasonable and the serving size was plenty! STAFF: The staff was friendly and very quick. The look of the diner was so retro. The atmosphere was super chill and friendly. Our family of four popped in to Clayton's for some lunch on a late-October Thursday on a recent visit to SD/Coronado. I was hoping to catch the place in a mid-afternoon lull at 1:45, but it was apparent that we actually caught the end of the local lunch rush. Seeming to sense our "foreigner" status, we received a lot of awkward glares from patrons at the bar, and were told rather gruffly to wait in a corner while staff cleared a recently-vacated table. We soldiered through the rough start, recalling the solid ratings on Yelp and trusting our Elite brethren, and are glad we did! Our waitress warmed to us once we were sat, and even charmed the kids a little. She answered a couple of menu inquiries, and we were off and running. As we waited for our food, the place began to clear and calm down a bit, taking on the warm, beachy-diner vibe it was meant to have. The food arrived and was all consumed very quickly - even by the kids. Plates were large and the food was solid, across relatively diverse genres. I had a breakfast platter, wifey had chicken fingers, and the kids had pancakes. Our waitress advised us to use restraint when it came to the milkshakes, saying that one milkshake easily feeds two people. Although her heart was in the right place, I need to tell you that she was not quite accurate: it's more like a "one-milkshake-to-four-people" ratio... Mom's doctor is in Coronado, we've driven by and seen how busy the restaurant is. We're long time South Bay residents. Prefect time after lab work to try it. Extremely lucky finding parking. Did a u-turn + a guy was pulling out. A 5-10 minute wait to get a table cleared. Mom had the eggs Benedict and I had the country Benedict. We both don't go out to breakfast so it was a treat for both of us. Mom's coffee cup was kept full. There's a lot of potatoes to much to eat, but good. My spicy sausage got your attention. Best part was the biscuits + gravy. My brother raved about the turkey + gravy when he worked night shift at North Island (many years ago).
