Clayton's is one of the few diners that i know in San diego. Ever since moving from New York, i haven't been able to find a lot of diners over here. It has a very comfy vibe to it.... Kind of like grandma's house. The staff is so sweet. The wait time was average for a medium busy restaurant. The menu has a lot of options to choose from and parking is pretty easy. The coffee here is great! However, i ordered the toast with egg on it (toad in the road?) and it came out very soggy. Each time i come here, the food seems to slack. I mean it is diner food so not very much to expect in the first place. But for a place with such a grandmotherly vibe... you would expect the food to be made more with love. Overall, i rated this place a 4/5 because the coffee is good and i love coronado. After you get a good ol' cup o joe, you can walk around the beautiful town of coronado and make a cute day of it. read more

The BEST diner in all of SoCal! We like to stay on Coronado when we visit the zoo and breakfast at Clayton's has become a must-do activity. Everything about this place is awesome, the staff is very friendly and fast, the food is fantastic with a great range of diner classics to choose from. The eggs Benedict is just right, the hash browns are always perfect. If you go, make sure to sit at the horseshoe counter to get the full experience. A guaranteed good time with excellent service. The only negative is that, oddly, the regular coffee is not very good. Charming, delicious and a rare preservation of an unique American experience gone by. 10 out of 10! read more

My husband and I love this place! We go there frequently and the food and the staff are so nice. We have always had great service. The Sliders are AMAZING. Definitely give them a try. Seating was tricky for the 6 of us, as only one booth could accommodate us all in this super quaint 50s style diner. Once seated at the counter, it was magic. Service was impeccable with very friendly, smiling and attractive servers. The food coming out of that kitchen was to die for. I had the spinach, grilled chicken and feta cheese salad and it made for the perfect lunch. The ambiance was great, filled with locals....complete with a classic jukebox, an old fashioned cash register and homemade desserts under covered glass to make you drool . The coffee was great, and brought back memories of the coffee served at Café du Monde in New Orleans. I'd highly recommend this place to anyone visiting Coronado Island. My friends and I dined in and it was about a 30 min wait to be seated because they were following safety policies by having groups sit down every other booth.   I had the French toast stacker that was amazing especially when you drizzle maple syrup on top! Eggs needed seasoning but you kind of expect that in a diner-type joint. Coffee was good. Kid says hot chocolate was amazing. I asked for bacon with it and a banana on top - price comes out to about 30 bucks. Unreal. I asked how much the bacon was and it was 6 or 7 dollars extra. I didn't even ask for a side of bacon, I asked for bacon which I thought they were going to give me a strip or two on the pancake. For a side this expensive for pancakes, they should warn you or something. They also said tip was included, they gave themselves the tip! I'm not sure how much that tip was, but I thought that was arrogant. So long story short I paid about 30 bucks for three pancakes, some bacon, and a banana. I'm severely allergic to gluten. One of Clayton's food items listed on the menu are gluten free pancakes. DO NOT order this if you have celiac disease or a gluten allergy. I questioned the wait staff if the pancakes would be made in a separate frying pan, they assured me the pancakes would be. I became extremely sick after eating their pancakes. I understand they may use a gluten free mix. You can't use the same frying pans if you are advertising gluten free. People with celiac disease and an allergy to gluten become sick from cross contamination! read more

Had breakfast here when staying on the island. Picked it because no matter what time of day, there was always a line of people waiting out front on the street. The coffee was great, the food was average and the service was extremely subpar. I had to go in a get waters for our table and a lot of items we ordered we forgotten. While I am currently ranked third among regulars at Clayton's, I cannot honestly recommend this restaurant to anyone else any more. I enjoy this place, I really do, but whenever I bring someone else here they think I am insane. I now see the error of my ways. The seating situation is bizarre, they cannot really accommodate families. For example if you need a high chair, you must be in a party of five, not 4, not 6, only 5. That's because they have a 5 seat table that's positioned ideally for this and they absolutely do not want to waste a potential seat by putting a family of four in that spot. The booths in general are very narrow, and while I enjoy sitting at the bar, most people don't like either. Again, it's okay for me but I have to be honest in this review, most other people will hate the seating, the wait and the nutty way they assign seats. Assigning seats is done by a hostess, and they always have really cute hostesses which I personally like. If you bring a woman here, who will not appreciate the cuteness, she will instead tell you the hostess is totally incompetent and is actively making everything worse. This is a common theme. I wish I could say the menu more than makes up for it. Unfortunately no, it's typical diner fare but that's CA diner not the more traditional east coast diners that define the genre. This menu is not vegetable friendly, every sort of choice like that is high dollar. Any substitution at all has a big up charge, want to skip the sausage and bacon for avocado? That'll be $2. I like meat, this does not bother me, other people hate this. Part of the confusion is that this place pitches itself as the locals spot, let me tell you it's a tourist trap. There are a few locals but as soon as the tourist season ends the place is all tumbleweeds and crickets. And there are a ton of flies which is annoying as can be read more

We found this here, on yelp of course and decided to try it out on Saturday on Memorial Day weekend. Arriving after 10am we knew the wait would be a while with many people waiting outside. Deciding it would be worth the wait, we took a seat outside. The wait time until we were seated was 45ish minutes, and we were seated at the bar and were quickly seated with menus in our hands. Ah, good ole American style coffee shop/diner. I love it. From the old style decorations to the aprons the staff wears, I'm reminded of what used to be (take us back) and I wish we had something like this near our home. Anyway, food time. Super cute diner that has all the comfort food you could ask for. After walking around Coronado, my friend and I stopped here for a snack. We were overwhelmed with the size of the menu, and the server had to come back multiple times until we were finally ready to order. All of their sandwiches and paninis sounded delicious, but when I saw that they served breakfast all day I was torn... On a whim I decided to order their special of the day: turkey salad sandwich in a croissant. It came with fries. I thought that the serving size of the food was pretty good for what I was paying, and enjoy the sandwich. I do wish that the fries were made fresh, especially given they are served with the majority of the meals that they serve. I found myself looking at everyone's food: delicious acai bowls, shakes, and chicken and waffles. This review is just for the coffee take-out shop around the side of the restaurant so I can't vouch for the breakfast here. Ordered the cinnamon honey latte and chai tea latte - both were good but I'd say the honey latte I got from Clayton's Bakery & Bistro which is a few blocks down was even better where I could really taste the honey and cinnamon flavor. This is in a convenient location and walking distance to a lot of the local hotels in the area (we stayed at the Hotel Marisol) so if you're looking for a quick stop to grab some coffee to-go, this would be a great spot! read more
