I don't normally review on Yelp but I feel compelled to warn you. I ordered some pan cakes here - they give you three. Price seemed fair. I asked for bacon with it and a banana on top - price comes out to about 30 bucks. Unreal. I asked how much the bacon was and it was 6 or 7 dollars extra. I didn't even ask for a side of bacon, I asked for bacon which I thought they were going to give me a strip or two on the pancake. For a side this expensive for pancakes, they should warn you or something. They also said tip was included, they gave themselves the tip! Had breakfast here when staying on the island. Picked it because no matter what time of day, there was always a line of people waiting out front on the street. The coffee was great, the food was average and the service was extremely subpar. I had to go in a get waters for our table and a lot of items we ordered we forgotten. I received an egg scramble with potatoes and never received the coffee - even after two requests. Others in my party could not get coffee refills - even after multiple requests. This review comes in a little late because I wanted to calm down a little before I took the time to think and write this review. So this is not simply an angry tirade and is well thought out. I can honestly say, I had one of the absolutely worse experiences in my life at any eating establishment, even including fast food. My girlfriend and I popped in for a quick dinner this last Wednesday night. Our options were dwindling because of the hour and this placed looked cozy with it's classic American dinner ambience. We were seated by a nice young woman, so far so good. However, when the actual server came by to take our order, my girlfriend asked for something off of the kids menu (as she almost always does for a legitimate dietary reason). A full adult meal would be a waste, and I just happen to be one of those freaks who hate food going to waste. Probably because I was occasionally hungry when I was a kid. The server (a woman in her late 30s/early 40s maybe) give it no though whatsoever said, "No, that's the kids menu. What can I get you instead?" or something to that effect... sitting there a little astonished, we tried to explained but she snarkily retorted stating "She's not a KID sir!" and went back to asking what she wanted from the adult menu. Utterly shocked we quickly got up and I said "Oh my God, ok we're leaving then. I'm going to say something to the management later" (not 100% sure). She again was snarky and said "Ok good bye!" with complete confidence as if she was 100% in the right without question. She then immediately went to take the order at the next table, not missing a beat. Obviously she stupidly thought we were trying to "get away with something" and that didn't fully register to me until later in the evening. I swear I'm not so hard up for $6 or $7 as I'm no longer the broke loser I used to be. That made it even more insulting she would even have thought that way. What the f***?, did she think were were some broke dead beats? I do know that my girlfriend has a "strong sense personal appearance" and I follow suit so I don't get the rolling eyes if I'm not at least dressed "presentable". A smarter person who didn't hate people would have at the very least said something along the lines of "I'm sooo sorry, but that just our management's policy" and NOT have made us feel like absolute crap . No one should be employed in the service industry with an attitude like that, ANYWHERE. I don't know if she was having a unusually hard day, maybe her cat died or something even more serious, I don't know. I just think if that was the case, she should have stayed home and had a day of self-care. Also hope the management or owner is thoughtful enough of their workers to have granted her that time if she was really struggling. We went to down the street to a little pizza place where she ordered a kid's size spaghetti and they didn't even bat an eye like everyone else. We even have been to 3 or 4 establishments since then where she ordered off of the kids' menu, again with no one questioning anything. By the way, I tend to tip close to 25% and occasionally up to 30, but NEVER less than 20 because "I know the struggle" as they say. It's also the holiday season and "I" actually want to spread love and positive vibes out unto the world. I sure hope to God this woman will be able to figure that concept out some day. At least I give younger people a little wiggle room on customer service as they are young. I know how I was and I've learned a lot since. This woman was however at least in her late 30s. NO EXCUSE! We dine out often and this is very unfortunate. I would have liked to try the food and would have even likely returned in the future near future if food was good and had a better experience. Having someone like that is a genuine reflection on the management and establishment as a whole and you should be ashamed! NOTE: I am NOT doing this for a compensation of any kind, even if it were offered . I will never walk in that front door after this. Other than this experience, I can't say anything about the food or other staff working there, I'm sure they are all great, but I will never know. I do however expect some soft of apology and/or some kind rational explanation for why you employ some one like that in the first place. Nothing more! Finally, there ABSOULETELY no excuse for this sort of treatment, nor can it possibly be a "business policy" as I have NEVER had anyone say that in the entire I've know my wonder girlfriend. I admit this is very long winded, but as you can clearly I was beyond offended, not just by what she said, but her attitude. As you can also see, of the few rare instances I leave an Yelp review, they are always positive. DO YOURSELF A FAVOR! Seating was tricky for the 6 of us, as only one booth could accommodate us all in this super quaint 50s style diner. Once seated at the counter, it was magic. Service was impeccable with very friendly, smiling and attractive servers. The food coming out of that kitchen was to die for. I had the spinach, grilled chicken and feta cheese salad and it made for the perfect lunch. The ambiance was great, filled with locals....complete with a classic jukebox, an old fashioned cash register and homemade desserts under covered glass to make you drool . The coffee was great, and brought back memories of the coffee served at Café du Monde in New Orleans. I'd highly recommend this place to anyone visiting Coronado Island. Tight quarters, long waits but totally worth it. Service is fast and bathrooms are clean (but just as tight as the restaurant). You can't go wrong with breakfast here. We ordered the bacon cheddar waffle with a side of has browns, buttermilk pancakes with a side of corned beef hash and a short stack with sausage and an egg. All were good. Eggs needed seasoning but you kind of expect that in a diner-type joint. Coffee was good. Kid says hot chocolate was amazing. My friends and I dined in and it was about a 30 min wait to be seated because they were following safety policies by having groups sit down every other booth.   I had the French toast stacker that was amazing especially when you drizzle maple syrup on top! While I am currently ranked third among regulars at Clayton's, I cannot honestly recommend this restaurant to anyone else any more. I enjoy this place, I really do, but whenever I bring someone else here they think I am insane. I now see the error of my ways. The seating situation is bizarre, they cannot really accommodate families. For example if you need a high chair, you must be in a party of five, not 4, not 6, only 5. That's because they have a 5 seat table that's positioned ideally for this and they absolutely do not want to waste a potential seat by putting a family of four in that spot. The booths in general are very narrow, and while I enjoy sitting at the bar, most people don't like either. Again, it's okay for me but I have to be honest in this review, most other people will hate the seating, the wait and the nutty way they assign seats. Assigning seats is done by a hostess, and they always have really cute hostesses which I personally like. If you bring a woman here, who will not appreciate the cuteness, she will instead tell you the hostess is totally incompetent and is actively making everything worse. This is a common theme. I wish I could say the menu more than makes up for it. Unfortunately no, it's typical diner fare but that's CA diner not the more traditional east coast diners that define the genre. This menu is not vegetable friendly, every sort of choice like that is high dollar. Any substitution at all has a big up charge, want to skip the sausage and bacon for avocado? That'll be $2. I like meat, this does not bother me, other people hate this. Part of the confusion is that this place pitches itself as the locals spot, let me tell you it's a tourist trap. We found this here, on yelp of course and decided to try it out on Saturday on Memorial Day weekend. Arriving after 10am we knew the wait would be a while with many people waiting outside. Deciding it would be worth the wait, we took a seat outside. The wait time until we were seated was 45ish minutes, and we were seated at the bar and were quickly seated with menus in our hands. Ah, good ole American style coffee shop/diner. I love it. From the old style decorations to the aprons the staff wears, I'm reminded of what used to be (take us back) and I wish we had something like this near our home. Anyway, food time. Super cute diner that has all the comfort food you could ask for. After walking around Coronado, my friend and I stopped here for a snack. We were overwhelmed with the size of the menu, and the server had to come back multiple times until we were finally ready to order. All of their sandwiches and paninis sounded delicious, but when I saw that they served breakfast all day I was torn... On a whim I decided to order their special of the day: turkey salad sandwich in a croissant. It came with fries. I thought that the serving size of the food was pretty good for what I was paying, and enjoy the sandwich. I do wish that the fries were made fresh, especially given they are served with the majority of the meals that they serve. I found myself looking at everyone's food: delicious acai bowls, shakes, and chicken and waffles. This place was hopping. We arrived and we're told there was a wait of 10-15 minutes, which was fine. The area around provides tons to explore. We came back and were seated promptly. My wife ordered the Churro Waffle, and it was SO good. I think I liked it more than her. I ordered the Country Scramble. It was pretty good--filled me up that's for sure. Only complaint we had was the side of bacon my wife order was way overcooked. It was no issue though, we asked for a replacement side and the waitress was happy to oblige. This review is just for the coffee take-out shop around the side of the restaurant so I can't vouch for the breakfast here. Ordered the cinnamon honey latte and chai tea latte - both were good but I'd say the honey latte I got from Clayton's Bakery & Bistro which is a few blocks down was even better where I could really taste the honey and cinnamon flavor. This is in a convenient location and walking distance to a lot of the local hotels in the area (we stayed at the Hotel Marisol) so if you're looking for a quick stop to grab some coffee to-go, this would be a great spot! read more

One bad apple can rot the whole basket. We're not from the area and got to San Diego too early for our appointment (4.22.24 5:00am) and was looking for a place to sit and eat. I found this place thru YELP I even called to make sure. The lady on the other end sound irritated that I asked if restaurant is open. She did say open and we trusted that it means they are open!!! To our surprise when we got to the restaurant.. restaurant was close until 6:00am and it's the window with outside seating and it was a pretty chilly morning and was drizzling too. The point of my lengthy review is: 1. Lady from the restaurant.. don't assume that we (especially from people out of town) we know that your open means window not restaurant. 2. Yelp info should emphasize what is open at 5:00 am. 3. The reason I made sure to put the time and day so the (lady) staff with bad behavior can be pinpointed. 4. After reading all the reviews we were excited to give this spot a try for breakfast. We got right in because it was 7:15 in the morning. There were counter seats available only. It took a bit to get water and for our server to head over. After we placed our order, it took 25 minutes to get our food. People were looking impatient. I had a couple of cups of coffee while waiting, but the coffee wasn't hot and it was kind of bitter. I was disappointed with the coffee. If I'm waiting that long, I'd like good coffee. I ordered a veggie omelette with a pancake. The omelette was over cooked but the hash browns were tasty. The best part of my meal? The pancake! Fluffy, moist and oh so good. I should have just ordered that with an egg on the side. Even though the establish says they can accommodate groups, I don't think it's a great eating spot for groups. A family of 5 walked in and waited a bit and were finally seated at the counter. If I were with a family, I'd want to be seated at a table. I'm glad folks enjoy their experiences here. There is something to say about a good diner, and this one is pretty good. I came in before heading down to the strand for a nice walk along the beach. I loved the environment of this restaurant, very cute and old school. The waitresses' ( Grace and Jewels) were very nice and full of energy. Grace seemed very knowledgeable on questions concerning the menu. I also noticed she took a table for another server even though she was about to leave. Patrick also came around, he was helpful however I did not like the way he spoke to people around us. He seemed very on edge and it brought everyone's energy down. Also, even though Grace helped us for most of our stay he brought me the check to close out, I didn't think that was very fair. I will be coming back to see Grace and Jewels!
