I am changing my original review. I initially thought this place was cute and pretty good but I came a second time and I changed my mind. It was $9 for a small bowl of chili which is pretty expensive for what you get in my opinion. Then my friend ordered the reuben and it had A LONG HAIR MELTED INTO THE CHEESE! Do they wear hair nets?? It made my friend lose his appetite and he didn't even bother to ask them to remake it. Highly recommend this place! The food was delicious, and freshly prepared. My kids ordered pancakes and a "toad in the road." My whole family enjoyed their meals. The service was great, and everything was at a reasonable cost. We will probably come back and eat here again. I would suggest if you are a manager and need to have a serious conversation with one of your employees to bring it away from the customers. I stood at the window for several minutes watching a cashier be scolded about the way he rings up orders. Despite looking at me, they kept the conversation going and didn't acknowledge me. After playing some tennis at the Coronado Tennis Center, I went into downtown Coronado to get a bite to eat. I was looking around at some restaurants when someone told me to go to Clayton's Coffee Shop, which is a diner a block away. I decided to check it out. Clayton's is a 40's style diner with diner counters and even some old-style jukeboxes. It was very crowded when I came in, but I was able to get a seat at the counter. The staff was very confused when I sat down and three different people tried to take my drink order. I eventually ended up just getting a chocolate milk. The chocolate milk was just like the style you get at a great diner so my expectations increased. Unfortunately, they were too high. The menu at Clayton's is very extensive, but for my entree I got the chicken fried steak, which came with mashed potatoes and a side salad. The chicken fried is a classic diner item that most should be able to make very well, but it was subpar here. The steak was very dry, chewy and almost tasteless. While the service was a bit chaotic the waiter I eventually got was pretty nice. Altogether, I was a bit disappointed in the meal I received at Clayton's Coffee Shop. read more

Cute and old school. Looking around at the waitresses I immediately wished I had a cute, retro apron on too - if you have the extra pocket change you can buy one at Clayton's for about $30 ;) My husband and I were staying at a hotel down the road for our wedding anniversary and Yelped a good place for breakfast and stumbled upon Clayton's. We came on a Saturday morning and there was about a 30 minute wait. Eventually we were seated at the counter between some regulars - you could tell who the regulars were because the servers knew them by name, a nice touch! He ordered: French toast with a side of sausage. I ordered: Pork chops and eggs with a side of fruit. The French toast was really thicky, eggy and tasty (but not soggy at all). I didn't try the sausage but it smelled heavenly. My pork chops were pretty good, but there wasn't a whole lot of meat on them and I've certainly had better. The eggs were cooked perfectly, the sourdough toast and fruit were nice. We'll come back the next time we're in town, hopefully on a less busy weekday. read more

In a town that time "almost" forgot I wasn't surprised to see a place as Uhm..."Charming" as Claytons. Claytons is enormously popular with a wait for a seat at all times of the day, every day. Is it the food? The Uhm... ambiance? or the service? perhaps its the amazing location at the bend on Orange Ave. Aha! The place is right out of the 50's with cream colored striped walls, jukebox, open kitchen with enormous counter seating and a counter loaded with fresh baked goodies. It's got a real down home feel that's believable, certainly not contrived. Service was pretty darn good and certainly friendly enough. The food was real basic, as one might expect from the layout. I had an egg salad Sandwich that was tasty but real wet with large pieces of egg white in a creamy egg yolk dressing, lettuce, tomato and fresh yet unremarkable wheat bread. The crinkle cut fries were fluffy and just crisp enough. My buddies cheese steak looked good, but not pretty or even amazing. I think he liked it. Passed on Pie and or cookies as they weren't tempting enough and attention to detail on the glass servers was missing. They were smudged and crumby and seemed as if they had to be there, not wanted to be there. Some things are done better nowadays like dessert merchandising. I'm glad I made it in, I guess I was lucky, My friends tried 3 days in a row and discouraged by long waits all 3 days. To be honest, I was excited to come here since I like diners, but it turned out to just be okay. The place has a dine-in area with limited seating and tables, and a to-go window to the side of the building, and a mexican taco shop further behind the building. The menu has breakfast and lunch items, it's quite a good selection, but most of the items are overpriced. Service was alright. I got "The combo" with french toast and bacon. Coming out after about 10 minutes, it looks quite good. The french toast is 2 large slices cooked well, the bread was quite fluffy. The eggs are fine, but the bacon was kinda terrible. I did ask for it crispy, but all that meant was it was cooked longer to the point of being black... but the bacon is a weird type, it's a thick cut that is extremely hard to cut and chew. If I lived closeby, I'd come here every weekend, at the very least. This is such a cute coffee shop/breakfast spot. I got the spinach, feta, tomato omelet which is the best I've ever had. You can actually see and taste all the fresh spinach and the feta was flavorful. They also let me substitute fruit for toast. Also, I'm not a coffee drinker, but I opted to get black coffee here, which was very good. I saw so many of the other things they offer, being delivered to other tables. One star for the aubiance and another for the bus-boys, and waitress. This was my second time coming to this restaurant. The hostess was slammed two days ago and there was a long line. She was flustered with the amount of people that signed up for tables. However kind and nice she was she passed us up in line and caused hour wait time to to exceed an hour. I politely pointed out we were there first before several group she had seated already and she kept apologizing. I understood that it was busy and she did the best she could, but wait time was way too long. Once we were seated the busboy brought us water after waiting an additional 15 minutes. We finally ordered and when the food arrived it was mediocre. The omelet, chicken fried steak, and home style potatoes were not so great. Don't order the home-style potatoes crispy the turn out like greasy burn kettle chips. The waitress was great, no issues with her or the staff. It was a lousy experience altogether. For the lack of quality of the food and wait time I give the experience zero stars. The only reason I have it two stars was because once we were seated the busboys and waittres were great. I was so disappointed I really was looking forward to having a tasty meal. I have waited at other establishments and their food made up for the time spent waiting. Unfortunately, this experience was not the case. The lavender coffee was the only redeeming thing for my familiy's experience, less than 10% of total price. With tip we spent over $100.00 for three people and a baby. There are other establishments in Coronado that I would rather go next time I visit. Local foodie. read more

One of my favorite spots in Coronado. I try to get something different every time and I've never been disappointed. Most recently, I got their breakfast special of triple berry granola French toast. YUM. I don't know who thought of putting granola on French toast but I am all over that. The menu is extensive and they always have different specials so they are fun to try! Prices are pretty good considering the large portion sizes. I also always get their cinnamon honey latte. Double yum. Only downsides I would say are the crowds and the small crowded indoor area. Came here by myself for lunch on a late Friday afternoon. It's a seat-yourself service so I grabbed a cozy seat on the counter of the diner. Service was attentive and kind - servers are seemingly all college-area women. The food came fast (even though it was fairly busy) and it was delicious! Sitting so close to the kitchen area allowed me to see the interaction between the workers (severs and cooks) and it was very admirable! They are evidently close and kind to each other - which is definitely a key to a great functioning establishment. So, props to them for this evident bond they all share! It's a seemingly old-fashioned atmosphere, which I love! They aren't conforming to more modernized designs / layouts, which I hope they never do. The reason why I knocked off a star is simply because the bathrooms are very very tightly spaced. The walkway to the bathrooms would be difficult to get through if there was 1+ people waiting to use the bathroom. The bathroom itself is very box like (not walkable space) and I found myself twisting and turning just to get my bathroom business done... However, it isn't a major problem because I have not experienced many people waiting for the bathroom so it's a quick in-and-out use. read more

Hello newfound favorite diner. This cute Jem is such a great find. Very busy on the weekend. It's small. But let me tell you, it is worth it. I had the breakfast croissant sandwich with bacon, egg and cheese, they know how to do bacon. It was a great amount of perfectly grilled bacon, so crispy and juicy, the way bacon should always be. It's a huge sandwich so be hungry and leave satisfied. Leave room for the authentic, incredible homemade apple pie that shames Julian. We showed up on Sunday morning, starving and anyone who does breakfast on the weekends knows that waiting is inevitable. That's just how it goes. We were waiting inside and wouldn't you know it, the owner and her son come walking by with fresh, warm, delicious donuts. Virtual high five right now just thinking of how fresh and tasty they were. If you are in a rush you can go next door to the coffee stand to get donuts, pastry, coffee and other delicious goodies. Before we get to the food, let's give credit for the aprons. They all wear super cool aprons, which they have for sale. Gotta love the creativity. On to the food. -Coffee: good not great -The combo: 2 pancakes, 2 eggs, 2 slices of bacon or sausage ( I always get bacon for my swine option) pancakes were super good. Very light, fresh and delish. Eggs were scrambled to perfection and bacon was cooked just right. Absolutely awesome combo. -Breakfast Burrito Excellent!! Eggs, bacon and hash browns wrapped up in a fresh tortilla. So SO good. AND they offer (upon request) a spicy salsa that is as fresh as it gets. Smokey, spicy, thick goodness. Loved it!! Icing on the cake. Customer service is exceptional!! Hands down, big props. The owner, Mary, works her tail off, has a great smile on her face and treats everyone like family at this spot. Great home cooking. Fantastic prices for this area. Breakfast served all day. Breakfast, lunch and dinner served 7 dsys/week. My mom had a tuna sandwich on squaw. Large sandwich, very fresh and delicious. Came with cole slaw she said was very good, and the old girl knows cole slaw, so if she says it's good, you should give it a try. I went for the garden burger with avocado and a side of fries. Garden burger was very tasty and the cook was generous with the avocado. Fries were perfectly cooked (crinkled) so that they were crispy on the outside. They were busy at 2:30 on a monday, but the friendly waitress looked up and said "sit anywhere". I really went to this place this higher expectations. I unfortunately left disappointed. The staff was incredibly kind and quick but the food was nothing special or above average. I've had better breakfast at ihop. The mexican hot chocolate was good but the chocolate wasn't melted all the way through and was watery. Same goes for the yogurt bowl it wasn't anything unique and I definitely could've made it myself at home. I mean I recognized practically all the ingredients. If your wondering it's the flaxseed granola from Costco, surprisingly good granola! We also ordered chicken and waffles which weren't pictured because after a few bites in had to be returned. We typically don't return dishes to the kitchen because we hate to be those kind of people but the chicken was so not good at all and looked questionable. We ordered french toast to replace the chicken and waffles and again much like the rest of the food was fine. They were a little too eggy but nothing that syrup couldn't fix. Overall the food was very mediocre and not worth the trip from La Jolla to Coronado. Save yourself the time and money and get breakfast somewhere else. read more

We visited on a Thursday, about 7:30 pm, and there were only a few other diners there. We ordered the turkey dinner, and it was great! We got large pieces of very juicy white meat on top of tasty dressing, with mashed potatoes and vegetables also on the plate. Outside of Thanksgiving at home, we've never had better. Although it was all great, we especially liked the mixed vegetables - diced squash, spinach, and asparagus, cooked perfectly so there was still some snap to it. They also served a generous bowl of cranberry sauce and a Hawaiian roll. The wait staff was attentive and friendly. The diner atmosphere is genuine and not pretentious.
