This was my first time here. The house potatoes are flavorful and the Mexican hot chocolate was delicious. Everything from the service to the food was excellent. We arrived right when they were opening and people were already in line for coffee (they have a window where you can buy coffee even before they open). To be honest, I was excited to come here since I like diners, but it turned out to just be okay. The place has a dine-in area with limited seating and tables, and a to-go window to the side of the building, and a mexican taco shop further behind the building. The menu has breakfast and lunch items, it's quite a good selection, but most of the items are overpriced. Service was alright. I got "The combo" with french toast and bacon. Coming out after about 10 minutes, it looks quite good. The french toast is 2 large slices cooked well, the bread was quite fluffy. The eggs are fine, but the bacon was kinda terrible. I did ask for it crispy, but all that meant was it was cooked longer to the point of being black... but the bacon is a weird type, it's a thick cut that is extremely hard to cut and chew. One of my favorite spots in Coronado. I try to get something different every time and I've never been disappointed. Most recently, I got their breakfast special of triple berry granola French toast. YUM. I don't know who thought of putting granola on French toast but I am all over that. The menu is extensive and they always have different specials so they are fun to try! Prices are pretty good considering the large portion sizes. I also always get their cinnamon honey latte. Double yum. Only downsides I would say are the crowds and the small crowded indoor area. Expect a wait if you go for breakfast, and especially so on the weekends. That just means it's good! read more

Came here by myself for lunch on a late Friday afternoon. It's a seat-yourself service so I grabbed a cozy seat on the counter of the diner. Service was attentive and kind - servers are seemingly all college-area women. The food came fast (even though it was fairly busy) and it was delicious! Sitting so close to the kitchen area allowed me to see the interaction between the workers (severs and cooks) and it was very admirable! They are evidently close and kind to each other - which is definitely a key to a great functioning establishment. So, props to them for this evident bond they all share! It's a seemingly old-fashioned atmosphere, which I love! They aren't conforming to more modernized designs / layouts, which I hope they never do. The reason why I knocked off a star is simply because the bathrooms are very very tightly spaced. The walkway to the bathrooms would be difficult to get through if there was 1+ people waiting to use the bathroom. The bathroom itself is very box like (not walkable space) and I found myself twisting and turning just to get my bathroom business done... However, it isn't a major problem because I have not experienced many people waiting for the bathroom so it's a quick in-and-out use. read more

Hello newfound favorite diner. This cute Jem is such a great find. Very busy on the weekend. It's small. But let me tell you, it is worth it. I had the breakfast croissant sandwich with bacon, egg and cheese, they know how to do bacon. It was a great amount of perfectly grilled bacon, so crispy and juicy, the way bacon should always be. It's a huge sandwich so be hungry and leave satisfied. Leave room for the authentic, incredible homemade apple pie that shames Julian. It is that good, best warm with vanilla ice cream and whipped cream. I'm salivating as I'm typing. read more

I really went to this place this higher expectations. I unfortunately left disappointed. The staff was incredibly kind and quick but the food was nothing special or above average. I've had better breakfast at ihop. The mexican hot chocolate was good but the chocolate wasn't melted all the way through and was watery. Same goes for the yogurt bowl it wasn't anything unique and I definitely could've made it myself at home. I mean I recognized practically all the ingredients. If your wondering it's the flaxseed granola from Costco, surprisingly good granola! We also ordered chicken and waffles which weren't pictured because after a few bites in had to be returned. We typically don't return dishes to the kitchen because we hate to be those kind of people but the chicken was so not good at all and looked questionable. We ordered french toast to replace the chicken and waffles and again much like the rest of the food was fine. They were a little too eggy but nothing that syrup couldn't fix. Overall the food was very mediocre and not worth the trip from La Jolla to Coronado. Save yourself the time and money and get breakfast somewhere else. read more

Was very disappointed in my experience last week at Clayton's. My husband is from Coronado, so Clayton's has been a stop on our visits back home. Last week, we stopped in for breakfast. We stood outside for a good 10ish minutes with no one in sight to help & all the workers very busy. Someone did come and ask if we had been helped, and we said we hadn't. We asked to sit outside, and was told yes and to pick a table and he will be right out. We picked one, that had a few dishes on it (which was not a problem, and we moved them to the side) and was told that table wasn't "ready" and sat us at another. Not even two minutes later, someone sat another couple there. The waiter appeared to us that he thought we were an inconvenience. Now to the food - a disappointment. I ordered a cold brew with cream & I couldn't cover the bitter taste as hard as I tried. I added sugar & cream and even some maple syrup and nothing covered the bitterness. I ordered the chicken fried steak & eggs and it was cold & rubbery that I couldn't finish it/ the sourdough toast was the best part. My husband ordered the Denver omlette, which he said was just ok. Unlikely we will be back, which is a bummer. read more

Fried chicken hit the spot. And the waffle was good. So winner, winner, chicken...ahhh....brunch! Enjoyed the food and the friendly service. One star for the aubiance and another for the bus-boys, and waitress. This was my second time coming to this restaurant. The hostess was slammed two days ago and there was a long line. She was flustered with the amount of people that signed up for tables. However kind and nice she was she passed us up in line and caused hour wait time to to exceed an hour. I politely pointed out we were there first before several group she had seated already and she kept apologizing. I understood that it was busy and she did the best she could, but wait time was way too long. Once we were seated the busboy brought us water after waiting an additional 15 minutes. We finally ordered and when the food arrived it was mediocre. The omelet, chicken fried steak, and home style potatoes were not so great. Don't order the home-style potatoes crispy the turn out like greasy burn kettle chips. The waitress was great, no issues with her or the staff. It was a lousy experience altogether. For the lack of quality of the food and wait time I give the experience zero stars. The only reason I have it two stars was because once we were seated the busboys and waittres were great. I was so disappointed I really was looking forward to having a tasty meal. I have waited at other establishments and their food made up for the time spent waiting. Unfortunately, this experience was not the case. The lavender coffee was the only redeeming thing for my familiy's experience, less than 10% of total price. With tip we spent over $100.00 for three people and a baby. There are other establishments in Coronado that I would rather go next time I visit. Local foodie. read more

The food was really good. I got a breakfast sandwich with hash brown. My bf got scrambled eggs, bacon and a Belgian waffle . The Mexican mocha was really good and so was the hot chocolate. Our waitress was super nice and so was the rest of the staff. My issue was the restaurant itself. It was extremely crowded. There isn't enough room for 2 people to walk down an aisle with out somebody having to go back the other way or into the booth. The staff kept bumping into each other while we were having our breakfast. Also there were relentless flies flying around that kept bothering us. read more

A great classic neighborhood coffee shop. You can eat at the counter or in a vintage booth. I had the homemade corned beef hash with eggs (a la carte) and it was yummy. If you are going last minute as a single, it probably won't be hard to get a seat at the counter, but a group of 4 could be waiting a while, especially at popular times. read more

Crowded, but the the wait was less than 20 minutes. My husband and I sat inside at the bar and it was a cute vibe. Enjoyed watching staff having fun at work singing along with jukebox and making milkshakes! I ordered biscuits and gravy with breakfast potato's. It was really good and fast! Husband went with the special of the day and it was giant breakfast burrito and vanilla latte. He said it was ok (hard to compete with all the great burritos here in Southern California), but really enjoyed the latte. We visited on a Thursday, about 7:30 pm, and there were only a few other diners there. We ordered the turkey dinner, and it was great! We got large pieces of very juicy white meat on top of tasty dressing, with mashed potatoes and vegetables also on the plate. Outside of Thanksgiving at home, we've never had better. Although it was all great, we especially liked the mixed vegetables - diced squash, spinach, and asparagus, cooked perfectly so there was still some snap to it. They also served a generous bowl of cranberry sauce and a Hawaiian roll. The wait staff was attentive and friendly. The diner atmosphere is genuine and not pretentious. The açaí bowl is good as exported by my nine year old. I had the French toast which was nothing special so would not get that again. Half order more than enough. If getting takeout with syrup you will need more than one container. They are tiny, so FYI if you like syrup. Their donuts and pastries look so good. Clayton's is a fantastic example of the All-American diner. The food was great, and the service was exceptional. What really stands out on the menu, though, is the coffee. It's all you can drink like any diner, but the difference is that it's actually excellent coffee. Also, our waitress Jexie was awesome--quick server, knew the menu super well, and had a great sense of humor.
