We travel to Coronado every few months and I have always wanted to try Clayton's because I always see a line. It was the middle of the week and the line looked much shorter than it normally looks so we gave it a try. The wait time was still 30 minutes, but we walked around a little it and stayed outside. I was hoping they would put us in a booth since there was 5 of us, but we sat at the counter. The service was pretty good, but when our food came my sister in law ordered the biscuits and gravy and she said it was super peppery and could not eat it. Not a single person came and asked us how the food was. Our kids had the Mickey pancake and shared it. They were nice enough to make 2 smaller ones so they didn't have to fight over it which was nice. I had a basic breakfast with eggs, hash browns, bacon and toast. My husband enjoyed his as well. I took off a star due to the service of them not checking in with my sister in law. They seemed great for the rest of our group. We may be back if their isn't much of a wait. read more

This is another place where they make you fell like they are doing you a favor by serving you. The ladies at the express coffee line have an attitude, they are literally yelling that they are busy, the lines are long but the only reason is that it's the only official breakfast around. I was very disappointed by this meal. This was highly recommended by many travel blogs and sites I looked at before coming to Coronado, as it's a classic place in town. We waited 35 minutes, which didn't really bother us because we were hoping the food would live up to the hype. We ordered two sandwiches to split, and I liked how the waitress brought the portions out split in separate plates. However, there was a hair baked into my biscuit... EW. And there was another hair on my moms plate. No ambiance or reputation can make up for that. It bears noting that usually when I am asked, "How is your food?" at a breakfast place. My response is always, "It's OK." My belief being that breakfast is not all that hard to make. However, when I asked this time my response was, "Amazing!" I got one of their Sunday specials which was a French Toast Stack. It was four thick cuts of french toast. In-between two of the slices was a friend egg, ham and Swiss cheese. Then covered in powdered sugar. For anyone who loves savory and sweet together it was a dream breakfast treat. Clayton's Coffee Shop is how you do a 50's diner right. It's not over the top. It really feels like a place you could have eaten at back in the 1950s. The counter tops even have old Seeburg Wall-O-Matic Juke Box. They don't work, but they add to the charm. There is plenty of other decor to make you feel like you are right in the 50s. The place is small and crowded. There is only 7 or so booths. The rest is all counter only seating. The only downside is that it is very warm inside. We had to ask for everything. Drinks? You forgot some. Silverware would be nice to eat our food? How about syrup to go along with pancakes? Bottomless cup of coffee? The server came by the table 3 times and didn't see the empty cup so you have to ask for a refill every time, so not so bottomless. How about getting the order right? Nope. Missed 2 out of 4 orders. We are on a 3 night Covid getaway to San Diego and staying at the Ocean Park Inn (love!) in Pacific Beach. Spent the morning on Coronado and based on Yelp reviews headed to Clayton's for breakfast. It was a Friday morning and we wanted to sit outside (due to Covid). Waited about a half hour and it was well worth it. All 3 guys that waited on us were so friendly and fun and never rushed us despite the number of people waiting. Husband had the Florentine benedict and really enjoyed it. Clayton's is your typical diner stop with an addition of also offering baked goods like pies, pastries, donuts. I came here early in the morning, so I had no issues finding some seating but usually when driving past this place, it's packed full of people. The place is pretty cramped inside with not many tables and more counter seats than anything. Service was decent here but the kitchen seemed to take quite a while with the food even though the place was quite slow out front. The coffee is decent here, I saw that they served Cafe Moto. They used whole pinto beans sprinkled with cheddar cheese for their side which came out seasoned well and on the runny side (which I like). Too bad they didn't have some house salsa to add to it. I always gotta have something sweet for my weekend breakfast, so I also ordered a short stack of pancakes on the side. I had them add some chocolate chips in for an extra $1.25. Really good pancakes in my opinion, I'd come back to get some more. Clayton's has some decent prices, a typical plate will run you about $8-11 with huge portions that leave you not being able to grab lunch that day. They do serve lunch and dinner options as well, but breakfast seems to be the popular choice here. If you're in a hurry, they offer a take out window on the side of the building for to-go orders as well. Parking can be a nightmare depending on the time of day you visit, all the street parking is metered and Orange is a popular place during the busy times of the day. read more

Located at the corner of Tenth and Orange on Coronado Island, I was really wanting to like this place. There is a full service coffee shop inside and a street side walk up window outside. It was a beautiful SoCal day, so we chose the walk up route. Two coffees and a breakfast sandwich were north of sixteen dollars. What??? Come to find out, the young gal at the window rang it up wrong. Whew! We further started regretting our outside option when the trash truck came. Who picks up trash on Sunday? Now, it is under new ownership, it's been renovated, and the food is average at best. The portions are pretty huge, and I think they will give you a cup of coffee for 5 cents with any entree purchase! And it does give the Coronado locals a new choice for breakfast. The quoted wait time was ~45 minutes and the hostess asked us to check back in 20 minutes. The sausage was really greasy and almost too salty to eat. The hash browns were okay. This review is a great chance to remind everyone that there is a difference between "inexpensive" and "cheap". This food is cheap. The restaurant itself is cramped. I had to wait for a waitress to finish taking a table's orders and walk back in my direction and past me so I could walk past the tables and down the narrow corridor to the restroom. If your requirements end at "inexpensive" and "in Coronado", go ahead, and wait. Oh yes our waitress was BRIANA so you know who to avoid if you go (I would avoid all of them). This could be a REALLY long review but bottom line is no condiments w burger, had to ask (took 10 min I timed it) and attitude that needs work. Clayton's coffee shop has a walk up to-go window for wonderful convenience. For those gluten intolerant there is a gluten free banana nut muffin (their only gluten free carb option.) It's large and it's good. It does have the classic crumbliness of a gf baked good, but it was satisfying for a carb breakfast. My husband loved his chicken fried steak sandwich. Tasty and made w real steak. We're staying at the hotel del Coronado and although they're said to offer a gluten free waffle, they charge $40 for the breakfast buffet. So My wallet was very satisfied with my muffin and almond milk latte (although I'm surprised they do not offer stevia.) They earn my rating mostly for the convenience and price of eating on Coronado. read more
