If I could give this place zero stars then I would. First I ordered a Mexican hot chocolate which took forever to make. When I received it, it was cold and watery. Then I ordered the chicken fried steak which was utterly disgusting. I took 1 bite and I was done. Eggs were dry, chicken fried steak was oily and gravy was watery. Waste of my money. We've been her twice... the 1st time, we ordered a tuna salad sandwich and an egg salad sandwich and they were great... service was great. In and out in no time. The 2nd time, we both ordered breakfast, scrambled eggs with hash browns. Waiting waiting finally food arrives. Wow... no one told us they ran out of hash browns... we got fried mashed potatoes?!?! Seriously :( **News flash** hash browns are not mashed potatoes, and mashed potatoes cannot be disguised as hash browns. Next time, Mgmt should door dash to the local grocery store and restock frozen hash browns if you cannot produce real hash browns made from organic russet potatoes. Or offer a complimentary meal to return because we will not be back for dining. On a positive note, while you wait you can get a coffee/tea and pastries along the side window around the front door. I would have given zero stars if possible however Yelp wouldn't allow that. Worst service and food I've ever had. They can't even get a simple patty melt correct, my son ordered s country fried steak and tasted like rubber chicken. The managers are horrible and don't take care of their employees and treat them like second class citizens. I heard from some employees they do not treat them well either. Love this place. My friend is a regular here because they food is great! It's a popular place for locals and tourists. Not many seats but out of the two times I have joined her here we were are to grab a seat right away. I tried the Belgian waffle this time which was done perfectly, crispy outside and soft inside. Below Expectations! Other customers, received their food that were seated ten minutes after we placed our breakfast order. When we asked the server about where our order was, the server told us, "it would take long to explain to us how restaurants work." Hey, we were just asking the server if our order was lost. This server made us feel as if we were asking too much. Unfortunately the food didn't meet our expectations either because of soggy "toast," dry bacon with gooey eggs. Came on an early lunch weekday. It was packed. It shows a good sign of a basic meal. The space is fun and harks back to earlier times. The staff was friendly and counter service was fine. Went on a weeklong trip to LA and San Diego with my family. Coronado was a great stop, and Clayton's was the highlight! Stopped by at around 9am on a Friday, and after a short wait, we were seated at the (very comfortable) counter seats, where you can take in all the action of servers and the kitchen at work. It's a classic diner vibe, and the food is awesome. The sausage BLT (that's right, bacon and sausage) on a house roll with avocado is outstanding. House made corned beef hash is some of the BEST you''ll find anywhere. Breakfast potatoes are probably the best I've had: well seasoned and crispy on the edges. Good, friendly and extremely fast service and a good mix of locals and tourists for the clientele. Management of this place knows how to run a restaurant. Prices seem more than fair given the setting and quality. read more

I really want to love this place but I just can't. I've given this restaurant a number of chances and it disappoints more than it pleases. There is zero consistency to this restaurant and at $60 for a family of 4 I expect better. The food quality is just awful. Got a seat at the counter right away. Order was quickly taken. Food came out hot and fast. Corned beef and hash is tasty. The homemade salsa has a good kick and also tastes great. Portions are small, but that is still most places nowadays. Asked for an OJ, but never got it. It wasn't on the check, so, whatever. My waiter apparently went on break. After the food was dropped off, I never heard from anyone, until a busser begrudgingly offered to clear my plate next to my empty water glass. No "how is everything?" or "can I get you anything else?(how about that OJ?) " or "can I bring you your check?" from anyone. After hanging out at the counter twiddling my thumbs and checking IG for the 100th time, I asked for the check. 5 minutes after I asked, the monumental task was passed on to another waiter. Looked like plenty of staff for the amount of patrons, so I don't think it's a "boohoo covid shortage" situation. I work in a restaurant. I have a ton of patience for my fellow workers, but this was ridiculous. Maybe that's what I get for not being a coffee drinker and going to a coffee shop. 2 stars for taste. Mr. Andrew, wow, your attempt to justify the terrible food, dirty restaurant and gross problem with the flies by commenting on my close to 100 reviews is laughable. It seems you like to be a keyboard bully and deflect from the glaring inadequacies reported by what would look like several of your guests by justifying the filth and bad food. You 4* restaurant failed to deliver quality or value with the food that we were served. That is the basis for the review and perhaps you can focus on operational issues, like broken mugs noted in other reviews and the flies that were everywhere instead of being so defensive. So you know, I simply call it like I see it. It gives me no pleasure to report the quality you demonstrated in years prior is no longer your focus. I usually give either 5* reviews for amazing experience or 1* for ones like we had in your restaurant this past Sunday. Believe me, your eatery earned the 1* review and there was no reason at all to stay. We wasted our $40 and ate elsewhere. Quaint diner style restaurant off of Orange Ave. Loved this place! If this is your first time visiting Coronado you have to eat at this charming restaurant. Everything there was delicious! I didn't get a chance to try any of the desserts (sadly) but they all looked incredible. If I ever go back to Coronado I will be going back here for sure. read more

I really enjoyed having breakfast here because the old school classic diner feel. The countertop circles around and the waitress is right there tending to you. From classic juke boxes to shakes and malts, this is what a true diner is. Service was outstanding despite being busy on MLK day and prices were inexpensive for a quick brunch. Great place for breakfast! I have ordered coffee and donuts a few times from their window but this weekend was the first time I ate inside the restaurant. There was about a 30 minute wait at 9am on a Sunday, but it went quick and they passed out donut holes to everyone waiting. We sat at the counter, and everyone around us was very friendly and chatty. I loved all the retro décor and jute boxes, which still works ($.25 cents gets you two songs!). The food was good classic diner fare. We had a chocolate chip pancake, a banana pancake, and the veggie egg croissant sandwich. All delicious!
