This is my favorite California burrito place! I have tried lots of different places this by far exceeds my expectations

Came here for a quick lunch as it was nearby. I didn't read any reviews before coming and had high hopes upon seeing that it was literally a hole in the wall. I was terribly mistaken. I got some rolled tacos while my co-worker got a chicken burrito. The tacos barely had any filling and were super oily. The lettuce and tomatoes on top didn't look that safe, but at least the salsas were good. The burrito literally had nothing but chicken in it, so basically unseasoned shredded chicken in a tortilla that was falling apart for no apparent reason. Yum. Yum. And yum. Great service. Great food. The cost is so reasonable too. I am a bit surprised at the complaints about prices here. I agree with those who have said it the food is not authentic Mexican food. It is not. For example, I ordered chicken tacos. They come in a hard shell, American style. Not my favorite, but it is Coronado. It's not the most ethnically diverse city. Just saying. I personally have not had anything I did not like. I have been treated well. My order was entirely wrong one time, but they fixed it in a jiffy. So, we'll see what happens moving forward. For now, I stand at 4/5. read more

One of my favorite places to get a burrito, but it has its quirks. Food is great, and I visit about once a week or more and am constantly bothered by a few things that keep it from 5 stars. 1) they don't use foil on any of their takeout or phoned-in orders. I've been making requests for over a year and for the first time requested it and received it. I don't know if it was a new person or a fluke. Use FOIL! 2) quality control: sometimes my burritos are MUCH smaller than other times. Sometimes food is served barely warm, almost unacceptably so where cheese in the burrito isn't melted while eating. This problem seems to be hit and miss depending who's making the food. Hopefully it's one bad apple. BE CONSISTENT! For example, today I got a burrito from the one chef working (around 2:30, in case a manager sees this) and my burrito was much smaller than normal and lukewarm! I didn't realize until I got home. 3) needs a pickup window! I order food for pickup and have to wait in (usually) long line to pay and take it out the door. Meanwhile the food is getting cold - not cool. ACCOMMODATE TAKE-OUT! 4) not enough seating. Needs another bench or two somewhere. Clayton's owns the window-shop and diner too, and should really expand their outdoor seating. Many high schoolers fill up any seating area regularly and there's no room to sit and wait for pickup orders, much less sit to eat. ADD OUTDOOR SEATING! 5) give away salsa when asked. I've been given a hard time many times that they can only give 2 or 3 salsas upon request. I usually eat 10, and being a burrito lover having eaten all around SD I can say not a single other place is stingy with their hot sauce. DONT BE STINGY! read more

This place is AWESOME! My wife and I discovered this place on our last day in Coronado. If I had discovered it earlier, I probably would have eaten there a couple times a day. Haha! I did a breakfast burrito with carne asada. It was delicious! For less than $8, it was well worth it. The burrito was also huge! Probably the best thing about their customer service waa that they were willing to allow my wife to customize her burrito. And while we waited, we were able to socialize a little bit with the chefs. This used to be the spot when working out on coronado, but the prices are insane. Myself and two friends purchased 3 of their Supreme Burritos and totalled out to 56 DOLLARS. 17$ each and im left thinking i couldve had an appetizer and a full entree at Chilis for that price. read more

We are local and have ordered from here probably at least 10 times in the past few months and about half of the time the order has been wrong. The burrito I like to order has sour cream usually and as is clearly on the receipt I asked for no sour cream. Nope. Multiple times they have messed up orders. When paying $14 for a burrito this is unacceptable. The buñuelos also had hardly any cinnamon on them. This food is really good! The salsa could be a bit spicier, but that's probably the Latina in me speaking haha! Maybe later they will have a spicier salsa as an option. But if you don't know what to get, go with a Coronado burrito of the half portion of carne asada fries (my 2 faves). For one person the full portion is wayyyy too much! read more

Food Poisoning! Sorry Clayton's but I'm going to write this review in the hope that you clean up your facilities immediately and prevent the following from happening again. Two weeks ago I ordered the California burrito for lunch, after getting about 1/3 of the way in I noticed chewing on something unusual. It was a bunched up piece of blue(ish) plastic. I put it aside and inspected the rest of the burrito, but decided it best to stop eating it because the plastic could have contained raw or uncooked meats - I don't know. Today, I ordered the veggie burrito believing the first incident to simply be a rare accident. However, after consuming the veggie burrito and about three hours later started to experience nausea. The rest of my evening suffered symptoms of food poisoning. I don't need to elaborate. The burrito was the only thing I ate that day. I've only been twice but those two occurrences have convinced me to take pause and share this. I don't share Poor Yelp reviews without serious consideration. I know people work hard and accidents happen. Accept this note as a warning to make some changes in the kitchen. read more

Clayton's Mexican take out does not have the best Cali burrito or fish taco in all of San Diego, but they do have some out of this world gems on their menu. Stopped by the walk-up service on a saturday morning. Their acai bowls changed my life. The to-go acai bowls come in a cup and are chock full of the kinds of fruits I am personally partial to (strawberries, bananas), granola, and some crunchy cereal-type things. Normally this would be a 3-4 star review but I have so much love for this place that I don't have it in me. I come here all the time for their California burritos - some of the best in SD. Had a tough day today and needed one of their Cali's so I decided to treat myself and add guac to it. WTH did I just eat? Literally the WORST tacos I've ever had in my life! It was like eating burned rocks in a tortilla shell. The one thing about Clayton's that's consistent is that they are terribly inconsistent. Some days the food is good, other days, I regret having gone there. Really disappointed with my breakfast bacon burrito. It was dry, no flavor, the tortilla was too big for the amount of food they put in the burrito. And the red salsa was disgusting makes me believe that they are using the wrong hot peppers to make the salsa. This place was good 9 -12 months ago I don't know what change but please fix it. Went here today for lunch with the boys. Ordered a Shrimp burrito. It comes with shrimp, pico, rice and sour cream. I declined the sour cream. Place was pretty busy, but my burrito was out in about 5 minutes. Flour tortilla was warm and soft. Tasted fresh like mama was back there grinding out tortillas. Had the "heated on the gas grill" look and feel. Hard to describe...lol. This burrito was really good. Plenty of baby shrimp in the burrito. They were clean too....fresh tasting and de-veined. Rice was good. Pretty much your typical Spanish rice...nothing too mind blowing about it. Pico was fresh. I liked how proportional the burrito was. It wasn't a rice burrito with a few shrimp. The food here is good but the wait isn't worth it. Even when there isn't a line they take WAY too long to prepare the food. Then, since they don't have numbers or names on their order, sometimes they give your order to the wrong person. This is a solid "go to place" at resonable prices for Coronado Standards. It is fairly authentic Mexican Food. However, this is not a "take a date" spot, unless you are picking up to go to the beach or park. There are a few tables outside, but this is not the place to start a long term relationship. Again, the food is good, and you will save money over the usual "tourist traps" in Coronado. Been there twice, on family and a bike ride visit. my boyfriend and i came here on a day trip to coronado looking for something good to eat. i ordered a chicken quesadilla which did not really meet my expectations due to the lack of flavor in the chicken and the overall sogginess of the quesadilla. my boyfriend got the carne asada street tacos that were good overall but had a lot of overkill on the cilantro. there was basically a mountain of cilantro on top of these three small tacos. the service is why i'm giving this restaurant 2 stars. when ordering the woman who took my order was incredibly rude when i asked her to repeat what she had said one time. i wasn't able to completely understand her the first time and tried to figure it out but had to ask what she said to which she responded to me in a incredibly rude and condescending way. if the service was better i'd definitely give this place another chance. read more

The fries came with guacamole and sour cream with tons of meat..... so fucking good.....i ate the whole order! Tacos.......huge with loads of meat and salsa!!!!
