Hello this review is for Clayton's Take Out. Let's begin.... I walk to this location and see the sign. Walk up to the steel security door and see the menu on the wall and the window where you place your order. Having been to numerous locations around town I order my default order........Carne Asada Buritto. Order came up fast and was impressed. Got my hot sauce and drink so I'm ready to chow down on this thing........ready???? Bite: Good seasoning with Carne Asada beef. Way too much guacamole. It seems like there was more guacamole than beef. I was disappointed. Seemed smaller in portion size than most places I flock to. Sorry Clayton's Take Out I'll drive myself over the bridge and get better tasting Carne Asada. read more

I will never understand why this place is so appealing to some people. The food is ALWAYS hit-and-miss; I literally have never seen such inconsistent food preparation outside of Clayton's Take Out. I am a huge fan of California Burritos. I am not always in Coronado (or Southern California), and it's one of the first foods I miss when I leave. If I'm lucky, I'll get a great California Burrito from Clayton's Take Out. Their burritos in general are huge, very filling, and decently priced for a business in Coronado. Unfortunately, I've only gotten a good burrito about half of the time, and that's not an exaggeration. Every other time the carne asada has been literally overcooked to the point that it is inedible, and this is coming from someone who cooks all of his meat well-done. I remember many California Burritos from this place where I ended up picking out a majority of the steak and just eating the tortilla, cheese, fries, and sour cream (yeah, not so tasty without the main ingredient). On top of that, about half of the "bad" burritos gave me a terrible stomach ache. I have heard some similar stories from friends who also initially loved the place. I guess when the cook isn't stoned off his ass (watch them make your food if you don't believe me; the kitchen is easily visible to the customer), you can expect good food here. VEGGIE BURRITO FOR $3.50 its so big you'll wonder how your body holds it... and hold it, it will- because you can't stop eating it! Anyplace that makes a solid veggie burrito with guacamole for this price is taking things (my happiness) to the maxxxxxxx. Don't plan on doing anything besides napping afterward. The food here is good but the wait isn't worth it. Even when there isn't a line they take WAY too long to prepare the food. Then, since they don't have numbers or names on their order, sometimes they give your order to the wrong person. And sometimes it sits there and gets cold after you've waited 45 minutes for your 3 item order. Honestly it's good stuff but the wait isn't worth it. read more

This is a solid "go to place" at resonable prices for Coronado Standards. It is fairly authentic Mexican Food. However, this is not a "take a date" spot, unless you are picking up to go to the beach or park. There are a few tables outside, but this is not the place to start a long term relationship. Again, the food is good, and you will save money over the usual "tourist traps" in Coronado. Been there twice, on family and a bike ride visit. Hope I will get a chance to go back this summer. read more

The only complaint I have is that they use the frozen French fries instead of fresh potatoes. I would expect only fresh ingredients when paying for a $15 California burrito. Otherwise, everything else is pretty good here. read more

I remember when this place first opened up, and my friends told me where it was and I still couldn't find it! Greatest Carne Asada burritos ever! Taqueria style, not Cal-Mex, not Tex-Mex, or Health-Mex. The flour tortillas taste handmade, nicely seasoned carne asada, cheese, onions, cilantro, salsa, and guacamole. No rice, no beans, no lettuce or any of the other fillers that normally take the place of good eats. If you're someone who likes Taco Bell, or the local burrito place because they give you a huge burrito full of rice, beans and a little bit of meat for $5, don't go here. I am also fond of the rolled tacos with guacamole. Crisp and tasty with a nice topping of cheese and avocado goodness. My sister and her husband went here on my recommendation, ordered the chicken burrito, and the shredded beef burrito and weren't too impressed. Even though I specifically told them to get the carne asada, and the rolled tacos. That's like asking a waiter for a recommedation, and then giving him the finger and ordering something else. Moral of the story: Order the Carne Asada Burrito. Period. read more

Who'd a thought I'd find my favorite kind of chicken tacos here...just like I make at home! This is a tiny hole in the wall with no seating and barely enough room to turn around, but the service is efficient & just friendly enough. (Avoid going just after noon when the high schoolers bombard it with bodies & orders.) The tourists don't even see it! The prices are pretty incredible for this day & age...and servings are usually generous. This is one of my favorite places to go when I just don't feel like cooking lunch or dinner. read more

This place has the chance to clean up. Unless you want to schlep down to IB or over to the Barrio, it's the only place you can get Mexican take out. Unfortunately, it's just not very good. Although I've certainly had worse, the biggest problem is that it's incredibly bland. We've tried fish tacos, chicken tostadas, carne asada and carnitas burritos and the same complaint comes up each time - "it just doesn't taste of much." Next time, I'm afraid I have to ditch the bike and jump in the car to get my fix. No more Clayton's Mexican for me. read more

I've been going to this Mexican take out place off and on for over ten years. It's always hit & miss! A couple weeks ago I ordered rolled tacos w/ guacamole. Barely any guacamole. So today I go in and get rolled tacos and asked if they could make sure there's some guacamole on it. When I got to where I was eating my lunch, the tacos were literally swimming in 3 inches of guacamole! And the tacos weren't even the slightest bit hot. Very disgusted!!! I don't think that kind of service is funny at all especially when I come there often and tip them!!! read more

I stopped by here for a quick lunch. I ordered the California Burrito 'To Go' and it was delicious. One of the things I love about this little "Take Out" restaurant on the side of the regular restaurant is that I can order my food (with hardly a wait or line to wait in, and I get my food in a few minutes. The people here are fast and courteous, not to mention, very good to talk with. There's something about this place that has a good vibe to it (I actually like it more than the restaurant inside ~ even though the people inside are pretty cool too.) Anyways, I got my food in a short amount of time, got to talk to some of the locals, and I had a pretty good sized/tasting California Burrito. read more

My boyfriend & I stumbled upon this place and couldn't have been happier! The prices can't be beat! I got 2 carne asada tacos for $3.75, and my boyfriend got a carne asada burrito for about the same price. Clayton's is small, with only a few stool seating inside, but when the weather's nice out, grab one of the 3 small tables outside! While they made our food, we walked down the street and grabbed 2 tall cans of PBR to have with our lunch. It made for an awesome lazy afternoon, good grub, a slight buzz and sunny skies :) Would definitely come back here for more tacos!! the carne asada was BOMB! the meat was fresh, wonderfully seasoned and just plain delicious :D happy tummy! read more

We ordered out from this location for the fourth time - the time before this order said "we won't order from here again". Foolish us, we did order again, and found the same issues as previous orders. There was no hot sauce/salsa included as we asked, and the meat on the beef tacos was burnt. I know they are a busy place, and one of only a few Mexican food options on the island, but I'd rather go to Taco Bell than order from here again! read more

The place looks like a hole in the wall and by simple yelpian logic should be good but it's not. I gave it 2 tries. The first was the carne asada and the second chorizo and eggs. This place was clean and the cashier was super friendly. I ordered the carne asada burrito and it wasn't great. Meet was bland and dry and the guacamole was plain disgusting. When I got my order it didn't come with salsa and so I asked the cook since the cashier disappeared. He just gave me green salsa which led me to believe there wasn't red. My husband went back to ask since I could tell I was annoying the cook, come to find there is red salsa. Merp, not a good experience. read more

my boyfriend and i came here on a day trip to coronado looking for something good to eat. i ordered a chicken quesadilla which did not really meet my expectations due to the lack of flavor in the chicken and the overall sogginess of the quesadilla. my boyfriend got the carne asada street tacos that were good overall but had a lot of overkill on the cilantro. there was basically a mountain of cilantro on top of these three small tacos. the service is why i'm giving this restaurant 2 stars. when ordering the woman who took my order was incredibly rude when i asked her to repeat what she had said one time. i wasn't able to completely understand her the first time and tried to figure it out but had to ask what she said to which she responded to me in a incredibly rude and condescending way. if the service was better i'd definitely give this place another chance. read more

The food is great, and so was the service. We had the fish tacos, and they were some of best we have had. My wife comes from a Mexican family, and her aunt owned a Mexican restaurant, and her Mother was one of the cooks, so we know good Mexican food. read more

Located right off Orange street, this place has great prices for tacos, burritos and any other type of Mexican food. We ended up waiting long since there were two big groups in front of us. Tacos were ok. I ordered "avodada" which I thought would be vegetarian. However, it had meat in it. Good size tacos if you are looking for a deal. read more

Yum! I'm always happy with a Clayton's MTO burrito. Favorites at our house are the California and the veggie burrito. THey never disappoint! We always ask for lots of green sauce, which I beleive they make themselves. They also have THE BEST homemade flan. The only bummer is that they hardly ever have it. I always ask, though! If I could tell Clayton's to change one thing it would be to have Flan available more regularly. read more

Went here this morning and it was pretty good. I got a Chorizo Burrito, donut holes and a blended Mint Mocha and it was fantastic. My 13 month old enjoyed the donut holes, while Mama devoured her burrito and Mint Mocha! Would definitely go here again. Nice to know there's a local donut shop close by in the island. The staff was not so friendly and seemed all over the place but then again they had lines out the door in the actual restaurant and a whole line hugging the sidewalk for their take out. I used to hear good things about this place. my bf and I decided to try it out tonight and it has been one of the worst experiences by far. we are from San Diego and love Mexican food. He ordered a cali burrito and I had a Texas burrito [cali with chicken instead] and sour cream on the side. Not only did I have to repeat my order 3 times , she was rude about it and still messed it up after that and was rude when we asked to fix it. On top of that, the chicken taste like turkey from thanksgiving and there is no seasoning to the food. Overall horrible customer service and terrible food. read more

Had to stop here when we saw the line out the door of this tiny hole-in-wall Mexican Take-Out spot in Coronado. Prices were great but I must say my family and I were a bit disappointed with the food. The carnitas street tacos were the best dish we ordered. The fish tacos had way too much white sauce on the slaw served on top, the beef taco meat was dry, rice and beans lacked basic seasoning, salsas served on the side were basic and my daughters quesadilla came with French fries that we could barely even eat they were so dry and flavorless. read more

Sausage breakfast burrito - appears quite small for the price - but was hearty on the inside [what's wrapped inside the authentic tortilla: pinto(?) beans, eggs, sausage, cheese]. If I had known, I would've substituted the beans for potatoes. All in all, it's quite nice in taste and texture. read more

The price. That is what makes this place 5 stars. Definitely the best bang for you buck on the island. The burritos are very good and the chimichangas are classics. I don't think the hot sauce/salsa is very spicy. If you're here on a training trip, or trying to save some money, this is your place. read more

This place is a great find in Coronado! I don't think you'll find better Mexican food than this on the island and its cheaper and faster than the other options. Sometimes this place gets pretty busy and since they only have 3 people working back there at a time (i doubt you could fit more in than that) - service can lag behind. If you're impatient just go during off-peak hours. Suggest: 1) fish taco - one of my favorites in all of San Diego 2) California burrito - awesome - I would get it with guac 3) adovada - a little salty but I like that wash it all down with a sidral mundet and you're money for a cheap meal always less than $10 read more

After a photo shoot on Coronado we stopped by Clayton's with our bean and cheese burrito loving client to grab a cheap bite. The wife and I ordered two burritos to share half of each- the standard fare bean and cheese, and a breakfast burrito that was comprised of beans, cheese, eggs, hash browns, and pico de gallo. The verdict - okay but leaning on the bland side. I think we've got two big factors dropping these burritos down a notch for me - one is the refried beans. Too many whole beans, too watery of a consistency. The other factor was the pico de gallo just wasn't that flavorful. The breakfast burrito also could have been better had the hash browns been crispier. I commented to my wife that a mediocre taco shop experience is gourmet in any other part of the world. And living in southern California does cause me to take the burritos for granted. Clayton's overall was fine, just not what I'd consider a gem among taco shops. Perhaps the best of what Coronado has to offer, but there is a lot of competition just over the bridge. read more

I used to live on Mexican Take Out carne asada burritos when I lived on Coronado. Yesterday I went back for the first time since they changed hands a couple years ago. They've cleaned the place up a bit, added the blue awning and the outdoor tables, and changed the name to Clayton's Mexican Take Out, but the basic premise remains the same: fast, cheap, and relatively decent Mexican take out food. As I mentioned earlier, the carne asada burritos from here are pretty good. The burrito is chock full of carne asada with cheese, salsa, and guacamole. For some reason, they've changed the recipe since I was there last and added lettuce to the burrito. Not sure why, but if you order the carne asada burrito I'd ask them to just leave it out; it just doesn't fit. I usually ask them to add beans to the burrito, because that's how I roll ($.75 extra). Decent take-out Mexican food, but if you are looking for good Mexican on Coronado and can afford the time to sit and eat, I'd go to Miguel's instead. read more

Other Yelp reviews may say Clayton's is "the place for carne asada on Coronado" and that is, to an extent true. How much? Well, there are only two other places on the island that I believe serve carne asada; Costa Azul is a sit-down restaurant and the Night & Day cafe isn't a taco shop. Anyway, I pass Clayton's to get to and from the bus and my apartment pretty much everyday, and I've hardly ever eaten there. About a year ago, I got some lunch there, a pollo fajitas plate I believe, and it was pretty good. Nothing to write home about, but tasty. About a month ago, I set out to make my own carne asada fries, so I just bought some cooked carne asada from Clayton's. Again, not the best, a little dry, but well seasoned and made for decent homemade fries. Recently, I decided to finally try their carne asada fries, since that is my current squeeze of the taco shop offerings. There were definitely pros and cons. I'll start with cons: Crinkle-cut fries. WTF?! I do NOT go to a taco shop to get the same frozen, dry, crinkle-cut fries as I can buy from Vons. Plus, they were in the fryer for what seemed like ages, and were still dry when I bit into them. Carne asada was kind of dry, just like when I ordered it on its own. Here are some pros: Quantity of toppings was good - I like cheese, there was a ton of cheese melted onto the fries. I like to have at least a bit of carne asada in... 90% of the bites I take, and that was easy to do with this dish. I generally order extra sour cream, and the ratio of sour cream to guac was perfect for me with the extra sour: generous of both. And pico! I love love love pico on my carne asada fries, and there was plenty for most bites. Clayton's isn't the best taco shop I've been to, not by a long shot, but if I'm craving Mexican on Coronado, I'll probably get it. I might just wait until I'm around SDSU. The value is there though for sure, the fries were only $5.75 before the extra sour cream! I do think I'll stick to Clayton's when I'm feeling a burrito or tacos though, I don't think I ever want carne asada fries with their frozen, cheap fries again. read more

Clayton's has been very good, except for the last time I got a good piece of plastic in my burrito. It could have broken my teeth and damage my mouth. They need to be more careful, I don't know if any other piece got in other people food but it is a choking hazard. They have been so good to us and they food has been amazing but this has got me worried about what else is in their food. read more
