I've learned that they actually have a bar side and a restaurant side and we didn't realize that when we visited and entered the bar side. It was a really weird vibe. It was a big room with a bar and we assumed that was the restaurant. They had a bunch of tv's with soccer games on and it was pretty much all men in there (was this a men's club?). We ordered our meals with appetizers of Portuguese soup and chorizo and steak dinners. The soup was decent and everything else was just meh. Eventually another woman came in with her male partner. I have been going to this restaurant for years, always is an enjoyable experience! As a Portuguese person the food really resonates well and tastes straight from avó's kitchen! This particular visit I had the special, quail. It had a delightful sauce which seeped into the rice making for a flavorful plate. Among the dinner options, always start with a bowl of soup. I brought my wife and her parents who had just arrived from California two hours earlier. This was, in a nutshell, an awful Tuesday night dinner experience with bland, poorly-prepared food and a dishonest waiter who ripped us off. Where to begin? -The waiter acted like he was doing us a big favor by seating us at 8:10, even though hours show a 9pm close both online and on location. -Per the menu, all dinner entrees come with a choice of two sides, but the waiter wouldn't let us choose, clearly just wanting to get us in & out as quickly as possible. We asked for the advertised choice, but he casually glossed it over and said that our dishes all came with specific sides. My father-in-law didn't even get a side. -Waiter told us we had to pay for bottled water because they "had a problem with the pipes." He charged us $18 for 6 tiny bottles of water, an obvious cash-grab scam. They wouldn't be able to operate a kitchen/restaurant if they had a problem with their pipes, this was just pure and simple dishonesty. The waiter actually had the nerve to tell us that "some restaurants charge $2.50 for tap water." What a joke. -The food was terrible. Everything was overcooked and extremely bland, with no love or pride. The side salads that were forced upon my wife and her mother as sides were wilted and slimy. My chicken & shrimp were both overcooked and dry. My wife's smelts were bland & over-fried. My mother-in-law's whole Bass was overcooked and dry. My father-in-law's Codfish dish had no flavor whatsoever. Awful food all around, they should be ashamed to serve it to people! -The waiter never checked in during the meal to ask if everything was going well. He was slouched over the bar across the other side of the restaurant the entire time we were eating with his back to us. -When we received the bill, we immediately noticed that four different items were marked up 1-$2 higher than the prices listed on the menu, which totaled another $6 added to the bottom line. We called the waiter over who fluffed the whole thing off, changed nothing and said "I'll make it up to you the next time." I should have insisted that he correct the errors, but at that point we all just wanted to get out of that place as quickly as possible. There obviously won't be a "next time," we will never go back to this place and we won't send our friends. We just moved to the area and had high hopes for The Clipper. Just phenomenal everytime. I think it's my favorite restaurant in Fall River. The Porto restaurants in Fall River mostly have the same dishes, so it's the subtleties of the experience that stand out between the establishments. The Clipper is as authentic as it gets. read more

My wife and I hadn't been to The Clipper in thirty years. We both wanted a Portuguese meal and they were open and didn't need reservations. The tables were well spaced. My wife had the steak and eggs and it was a nice sirloin in a spicy gravy. I had the shrimp Mozambique. The sauce was very good with a lot of garlic. The French fries are hand cut and very good. I had much higher expectations for this place. After reading all of the reviews I was ready to spend $60 with myself and my girlfriend and have a good meal (considering we don't drink alcohol just water). When we got here it seems much more formal inside than you would expect and we were not dressed for the occasion. My cousin ordered the Bife a Casa, I suggest to stray away from this because they pulverize the meat to a flat! The chourico was great and my surf and turf was amazing! Our dates both got pork aletejana (sorry if I misspelled that) they claimed the sauce to be a little greasy and oil tasting. Overall my food I would rank 4 stars but my guests weren't pleased. read more

Checked out Clipper tonight after a 20 year hiatus (don't think I've been there since I was a kid). I was really surprised that Clipper wasn't one of the restaurants that had come up in the last 10 years when I ask people where to go in Fall River for Portuguese food. It was excellent - the Shrimp Mozambique is the best I've had any where, the Little Necks Española were excellent and the house steak was exceptional. The prices were extremely reasonable given the quality of food and overall experience (sub $100 for two bottles of wine, two apps and 3 entrees). I highly recommend Clipper and look forward to returning and exploring the menu in the future. read more

It was a great portugeese dining experience. we had steak portugeese sausage shrimp cows cheese with hot sauce on the side wonderful bread....It was all awesome.I would advise yelpers and people visiting battleship cove which is right around the corner to go to this relaxed lovely spot.The food is top notch.very friendly wait staff. Ordered take out . I ordered shrimp Mozambique over the phone . She was kind and courteous but never gave me a price . I arrived at the clipper walked to counter and waited. She went and got my food and said $19 . I was a little surprised. When I got home the portions seemed a little off for a $19 plate . The food was decent sauce was oily and had a ton of garlic but heat wasn't bad . Shrimp were shelled and De veined which is always a plus. And rice and potatoes were ok. I came here because people say it's the best shrimp Mozambique. It's not the best but it was decent . For $19 however I could get better elsewhere. read more

It was on a Sunday not busy at all actually we were the only people there at one point but the service was good the food I'm not sure if it's my style but I did like the sauce that was in the chicken. As a newbie to Portuguese cuisine I can not compare Clipper to any other but I do reckon this is the real McCoy. Located in an ethnic part of Fall River, it has a simple European vibe inside and is teaming with Portuguese folk of mostly old people. Our group was fortunate enough to be under the guidance of Mo's bro-in-law, Bob, who is Portuguese and knows the owner and Portuguese food well. Bob expertly selected dishes and did most of the ordering for the table. The food was truly representative of the plebeian masses of Portugal, and so, Clipper is authentic. (One of my pet peeves is when allegedly ethnic restaurants are Americanized/yuppified bogus versions of the ethnic cuisine -this bugs, big time). First up was a fresh (non-pasteurized) cheese app and a clam dish app in a garlic white-wine sauce, both of which were unique and uber-flavorful. Soft bread came with for dipping in the clam sauce and for making pseudo-sammies of bread and cheese and a hot relish type stuff. Mo's sis, Kathy, gave me the instruction on the methods of eating this app. Most of us got the assortment plate which had deep fried pork ribs, and three types of "snausages" (blood, chourico, linguisa) and a fried juevo and a red pepper to be paired with the pork. Mo's niece got the octopus dish which was well prepared and laden with tender Texas-sized tentacles. The portions were big and the prices very reasonable. We spent a couple hours dining and "conversating" here, and we agreed that it felt as though we were on a European "vaykay" as the lunch was a social time in this authentic restaurant. I would highly recommend this joint as a post- or pre-Lizzy Borden House meal. I give a solid "forty-whack" rating to The Clipper. Tchau, YELPers! read more

Ordered chicken and shrimp Mozambique to go. It was completely inedible minus the fries and rice. The chicken was super dry and the shrimp had a weird taste, I spit it out. I will start off by stating that this review in no way is a knock on the quality of the food at this restaurant, which has always been top notch - perhaps the best in the city of Fall River, as far as Portuguese cuisine goes. That said, this review addresses what has been a declining level of service experienced at this establishment over the past three visits. Lukewarm, apathetic service has become the norm, and with my dining experience of a couple nights ago, the worst of the worst, I've been left with no desire to return here ever again. To set the stage, my wife and I, along with another couple, decided to dine here before an 8pm concert just down the road. We arrived at the restaurant at 6:20pm, and were seated around 10-minutes later. The plan, upon being seated, was to immediately order a bottle of wine and our dinners, skipping the appetizer, as not to cut things too close, in regard to making the concert which began at 8pm sharp. After 15-minutes of sitting at the table, with the time now 6:45pm, and with absolutely no recognition from the wait staff that walked past us at least 15-times, we flagged down a waiter and asked if it was possible that we could see some menus. He stated that he was the "head waiter," apologized for ignoring us, and handed us menus, asking if we wanted to start off with a drink. We stated that we were going to share a bottle of red wine, taking him up on his recommendation of a particular Dão, which ended up being very good. He returned in a couple of minutes with the wine, and as he poured, we informed him that we were ready to order (as we had an idea of what we wanted anyway) and quickly placed our dinner orders before he had a chance to leave. It's now 6:55, but at this point, we were still comfortable we had plenty of time to eat and get to our concert, as it was only a few minutes away. After bringing the wine to us, the table next to us was cleared and cleaned from the previous diners who had just left, and set. Shortly after, a couple of women entered the restaurant and were immediately seated at the table next to us. The same waiter immediately approached, took their drink orders, and walked away. When he returned with their drinks, they placed their food orders. At this point, it was 7:10pm. 7:20pm... Their appetizer arrives. Nothing yet at our table. 7:30pm... Their dinner arrives. Nothing yet at our table. 7:50pm... They are wrapping up their dinner, and he takes their order for coffee and dessert. Nothing yet at our table. At that point, we know there is not enough time to eat at the restaurant without missing the start of the concert, so we discuss telling the waiter to package our food to go. I flag him down as he passes by and inform him of our decision, and he says "I'm sorry, but we are really busy tonight..." I told him the problem with that is... we've been ignored from the start, everyone around us is eating, and we are still waiting - despite NOT ordering an appetizer. 7:55pm... Waiter brings our food to the table in styrofoam containers, then walks away. I walk to the register to expedite paying for the meal, and he once again offers the half-hearted apology of "I'm sorry, but we are really busy tonight..." I left the tip column blank, signed the slip, and disembarked the Clipper - never to board again... Luckily, the concert venue had tables where we enjoyed our cold food with plastic utensils between sets. To end on a positive note, the concert was wonderful. read more

I go to Fall River often to stock up on Portuguese groceries and when I do, I always stop at Clipper for lunch. The complimentary Portuguese rolls are always fresh and they are not cheap with refilling the basket. After all, you're going to need lots of rolls throughout your meal to sop up the delicious sauces that accompany many of the dishes on the menu. I get the same dish every time, the Clipper shrimp which comes in a delicious Mozambique sauce. Portions are large...8 shrimp with white rice and Portuguese fries on top of that wonderful sauce. The ambience is that of a Portuguese restaurant in Portugal and the service is fantastic. Aside from the shrimp, Clipper has your typical Portuguese dishes from bacalhau in various forms as well as fried fish, bife a casa or carne alentejana. If you like authentic Portuguese cuisine, you must come here. Unfortunately, I did not snap a picture of my dish but I am sure you can use your imagination. read more

We have come to the Clipper on almost a weekly basis for many years. We have seen various restaurants crop up in Fall River but honestly for authentic Portuguese/Azorean food Clipper is our favorite. The wait staff is top notch. John the head waiter is like a member of our family at this point. He makes the best cocktails around. Everything from the best bourbon manhattan, martinis, sangria and everything in between. His attentiveness throughout dinner is so terrifically in tune with us, interacting just enough, fulfilling our every request to perfection. Derek's culinary skills are to be envied. Absolutely the best Spanish style littlenecks available, the freshest fish, seafood, the most perfectly cooked steaks and more. The menu changes almost daily and at times offers fabulous unique choices like Cornish hen, rabbit, goat etc. I am completely hooked on the cold Portuguese tuna salad. We often not only get dinner but take out meals for lunch the next day. There is not a single thing on the menu from appetizer thru dessert that isn't outstanding. We have eaten our way through the entire menu over time. Honestly they are a best kept secret. Fabulous food, cocktails, comfortable atmosphere and the best chefs and wait staff around, all at an incredibly affordable price. If we could give Clipper 10 stars we would. TM read more
