This review is long overdue. I have been eating here for at least 20 years. It was a place that my parents and I would go to every weekday for breakfast. At times, I would also bring my children. My parents had their favorite booth to sit at. The front stated to wait to be seated, but they would just walk to their corner booth. The ownership has changed since those days, but it looks like the menu is still the same. They still serve breakfast all day. I do not go here that often anymore, because my husband prefers to eat elsewhere. Today, I walked into the restaurant with my service dog in a stroller. I informed them that my dog was a service dog. A gentleman tried to make us sit outside stating that they did not have enough room for the stroller in the east side of the restaurant. I was asked once again by someone else if we wanted to sit outside. The female also stated that there wasn't any room in the east side of the restaurant. I asked her if we could sit on the west side of the restautant. There was only one family of about 20 people sitting in that room. All the booths were empty. She stated that if any of the customers ask about my dog, I should show them the service dog tag. My dog has gone through 24 hours of dog training classes. She is a service dog for two people. The dog lets one of her handlers know when she is hypoglycemic. Ever since we have had the dog, the handler no longer ends up in an ambulance. Enough about the dog. I guess I was just upset that I was being challenged about my dog being a service dog. I was happy that we had an AWESOME waitress that remembered my son and I. The waitress (Rose/Rosa?) was happy that I also remembered the name of her son. The sausage stuffed crepes covered with gravy accompanied with the O'Brien hash browns is something I always ordered before the change of ownership. I was pleasantly surprised that it was as good as I remember it being. My son had waffles with a side of bacon that he enjoyed. My husband had a burger with steak fries. He liked the way the fries were cooked. Would I recommend this place? If you're looking for a place that serves breakfast all day, I would recommend this place. Will I be coming back? We sat in the Elvis Room!!! This is such a quaint, cool place! I called to make reservations for 12 people, then called on the Day of our breakfast to add 2 more seats! The staff of Colonial Kitchen were so accommodating and pleasant! We were greeted warmly and served coffee right away! Colonial Kitchen in San Gabriel was an excellent choice for our group breakfast because of the FREE parking lot and free street parking. I was thrilled that when we entered, the large table in the middle of the Elvis Room was set and ready for our party of 14! They didn't seem to mind our mingling as we played ice breaker games, stayed for almost 3 hours, and used an extra table for prizes! Thank you! Our food came out promptly and was correctly served to each guest! I ordered the Pancake Combo which included 3 large pancakes, 2 eggs, and 2 pieces of bacon...yum! Sathy and I shared this meal, but couldn't finish! This was a successful Breakfast Club Badge meeting because Dunant, Julie, Aaron, Grace, and Jeff received the coveted award! My favorite meal is breakfast, so just a couple of months ago the honey & I were debating where to go for our breakfast date . So I suggested checking out this spot. I drive by this place daily on my way to work and home, however, I never stop by this place due to the outside of this place. It does not look like anything special. I came this past Sunday with couple Yelpers and they treated us like queens and kings. They gave us our own special room (Elvis Room) with all his memorabilia. I think there were about 12+ of us and the services we received were amazing and so on point. We got our menu immediately. The waiter came soon after to take our order for drinks/food. Our food arrived quickly and were still very hot. The selections for breakfast were endless. I couldn't decide from pancakes, waffles, omeletts, so I end up with Chicken Fried Steak and Eggs. It was one of their most popular dishes as recommended by their staff. I am glad I got it as Chicken was coated perfectly with the most sensational seasoning. The yummy gravy was smothered all over my chicken. I almost died eating this meal from happiness. This place has an old school atmosphere. It is like you stepped back in time with the vintage brick building/decors. This place has comforting food and laid back feel. I like the wood paneled walls and booth seating. Just got naturalized so thought what more fitting place to celebrate than Colonial Kitchen! Restaurant has an old school diner feel. Servers were very friendly and attentive. Came here for brunch and ordered an omelette, chicken country fried steak, and pancakes. Portions were decent. Omelet and pancakes are what you'd expect at a diner, but the country fried steak with eggs is a must! It's hard to find a good brunch place without a super long wait on the weekends and so I'm glad I can always come here when I'm craving good ol' diner food. read more

The Colonial Kitchen has been around seemingly for forever. There are always many older folks eating brunch here. It carries the vibe of that classic diner in town that is frozen as a moment in time. The food isn't anything spectacular. Won't change your life. But it does taste authentic. Like a good ole fashioned American breakfast of starch and carbs. The staple order here is the Titan Breakfast. This is a lot of calories ... 2 eggs, 2 sausage links, 2 strips of bacon, 2 pancakes (with more butter and syrup than you could ever need), 2 slices of toast, and potatoes. The food is decent and will satisfy. And there are those individual use jam packets stacked on each table. Let's talk about juice. The freshly squeezed orange juice is the best in town. You can see it being freshly squeezed by this machine behind the counter. The level of pulp is perfect. The level of sweetness is perfect. I'd come here just for the OJ. Terrific juice. This place is a staple eatery of this town. And it's a certain kind of experience that can be found only here. When in want of a classic American-style breakfast, I'll definitely be back. read more

I've grown up coming here for their breakfast whenever I'm craving an American breakfast. I don't come here for something spectacular, but I come here because I can avoid long wait times, and I know the waiters/waitresses provide great service and the food is consistent. I usually get the Titan Breakfast because it covers pretty much everything you want in an American breakfast--eggs, pancakes, hash browns, bacon, sausage and orange juice. First time here. The service is horrible, especially the hostess. She seems out if it. I entered the restaurant waiting to be seated..... She walks by, we had eye contact and she completely ignored me and walked away and back behind the cash register to help another customer with the bill. Ok maybe she is busy. I walked up to the cash register and waited until she finishes. Another customer with bill in hand came up behind me. She ignored me again and ask the customer behind me to give her the bill. This is a long time little gem in San Marino which has recently changed ownership. Food is still quality. Ambiance still charming. Problem is the hostess. Apparently she does not speak English and is unfamiliar with the American proper way of staggering guests between waiters. That causes dissatisfaction with her customers because she will seat 4 tables upon 1 server at one time. Now most of us went through school as waiters and bartenders. Four tables at one time is simply unmanageable. The hostess is the guide, yet this one is more interested in her texts than taking proper care of her customers. Frequently Jesus had to cover for the hostess while she was texting. Jesus? I'm sorry. You got slammed because your hostess seated 4 of your tables at the same time. PLUS!! She disappeared and you had to cover for her at the till. I needed to marinate that fact. New owner, I know she's your sister, and I'm sure she's charming, but she needs help in understanding her job, which is to be the traffic controller and never over burden the wait staff. Customers are not happy when they never get a coffee refill WHICH your hostess easily can provide. And? Having a hostess who does not speak English is a huge problem in your new American industry. I came here early on New Year's Day for breakfast before the Rose Parade and had a great time. It felt like being home. Everyone joking and laughing and I think they were playing my parents ' "Piano Hits" music in the overhead. The knick knacks reminded me of my grandparents ' house and the sound of the clock chiming was comforting. I was dining alone so I tried to seat myself in a 2- person booth but they insisted I would be more comfortable in a 4- seater. I was offered coffee right away. When I ordered poached eggs, my server asked how hard I wanted them cooked-- and no one ever asks that! And when they came out, she made sure they were light enough (they were). The pancakes were incredibly fluffy- marshmallowy even - and the syrup came out hot. They have an impressive orange juicing machine behind the counter, and when my server saw me looking at it, she brought me over a sample of their freshly squeezed OJ, which was so sweet and delicious (with barely any pulp). The owner is selling the business so she can retire, but hopefully the new owners keep the staff because they're perfect the way they are. read more

Have gone to Colonial Kitchen for brunch and dinner, and would definitely recommend stopping by for brunch. Step inside Colonial Kitchen, and it's like traveling back in time. The main restaurant has old time charm, and the show Mad Men actually filmed at this restaurant. If you're a big fan, maybe you can ask to sit where Don Draper sat. The smaller second dining room is not as charming or nostalgic, but it's a room dedicated to Elvis! A beautiful collection of Elvis plates welcomes you to the room! Pretty typical brunch offerings at Colonial Kitchen, but favorite dishes here include the Cajun Omelette and Egg Benedicts. Instead of Hash Browns, I highly recommend the Potatoes O'Brien. Portions are pretty big and hearty, and you might still be full by dinnertime. Staff at Colonia Kitchen has always been friendly and pretty attentive. The staff has always made us feel welcome. A little pricier than other breakfast brunch places, but the food was pretty good and the servers were really friendly. The Works Burger- comes with everything on a bun and 2 kinds of cheese. The meat was cooked pretty good when we asked for med rare. Mushroom Omelette w Alfalfa- Asked for egg beaters instead and potatoes O'Brien. Loved the crispy pieces. Chili- Should have been served at a hotter temperature. Came in a tortilla bowl, but it was on the greasy side. Cereal on the menu. I used to go here all the time growing up. I hadn't been in years. I went about a month ago and it was just as wonderful as every time. However I went a few days ago with my family and my waiter was... to put it mildly... a complete Jerk. He insulted me, was extremely rude and should I decide to go back I will absolutely make it appoint to not be seated in this mans station. I mean he served me my food and deliberately went out of his way to just throw an insult at me. Just for no reason. All I said was thankyou when he put my plate down and his response was to insult me by calling me and my taste on food ODD. I do NOT deserve that kind of talk nor was it needed or necessary. That man needs to learn some manners. He also went on to just throw other rude things at me. I requested some mashed potatoes and gravy to substitute instead of fries but was charged for it. The gravy was wrong when it came out which he fixed for me but they were the worst mashed potatoes I have ever tried. I literally had 2 small bites. They were dry and not whipped not a bit of flavor. So I asked for fries to replace it. He tried to charge me for that too instead of taking the mashed potatoes off. I said well can you take these mashed potatoes off my bill? He said why? I said I'm not going to eat them. These are really terrible. He said well you ordered them. I said yes but they are disgusting and I don't see why I should pay for sonething I'm absolutely not going to eat. He tore up the new ticket and said "FINE forget it the world doesn't revolve around french fries." I am beyond shocked and appalled by this grown mans behavior. read more

The exterior and architecture were so cute and we were very hungry, so I forced my children to try this place. The parking lot was full, so I called to check on the wait time. No answer and voicemail that had not been set up yet... red flag #1, I didn't notice the help wanted sign in the window, as I walked past 2 people waiting for a table. Yes, Liam, I watched you ignore us and bus the table next to us for 10 mins, then once he acknowledged us, in an attempt to take our order, he was able to spit out all of his trauma from the last 3 years of his life and tell us that women like me are the reason he stays single. Who says that to someone? Especially someone that is expected to give a gratuity. He left twice in the middle of taking our order. The final straw was when he took 2 out of the 3 of our orders.... Mid order taking, he left the table again! This time, he heard a ding ding from the kitchen and said he would be right back, he had to get another table's order. Why is that table and everything else in the restaurant more important than us?! He plopped a portion of that table's order down in front of them and they didn't have silverware! He asked his co-worker to get them table service and she disappeared. The people at the table sat there staring at food that they couldn't eat. He went back to the kitchen to do something and we ran for our lives! I have no idea how the food is because he could not focus long enough, nor stop talking about himself long enough to take our order and he was extremely rude, condescending and slightly misogynistic. Horrible food, dated-dingy decor, dirty floors & a sticky booth. Food arrived five minutes after we ordered and the server remarked that "it was fast, wasn't it?" Well, yes, but everything was cold & looked/tasted like it had been sitting in the kitchen for hours (days? recycled left-overs?): the potatoes & eggs tasted like they were fried in rancid/stale oil & had the flavor of everything else that had come on the grill before (check the expiration date on your oil, and all of your ingredients for that matter, & clean your grill!). The breakfast meats were the cheapest, poorest quality possible (ham was fatty/gristly & very tough; & the canned corned beef hash was turning in color, not pink & fresh, but looked grayish). Gross! Time for the Health Department to pay a visit. Pancakes were tough & flavorless too (maybe try adding some pure vanilla extract to the batter?!) If I am going to pay $55 (before tip!), you heard me right: FIFTY-FIVE DOLLARS for two breakfast plates (eggs, meat, potatoes & toast) and a side of pancakes ($11 for TWO PANCAKES, really?), I expect fresh & flavorful food, with the highest quality ingredients like REAL butter (not stale plain-wrap margarine) & Grade A PURE maple syrup (not "maple-flavored" toxic-additive-garbage).
