This place was absolutely amazing and I already can't wait wit to go back. The food is so good!! My friends and I wanted to try a little bit everything. We had the peach burrata, yellowfin tuna, truffle pasta and teriyaki pork belly as appetizers. I'm not joking- everything was good. I especially loved the fresh peaches and the pork belly. For entrees, we tried the lanolin lollipops, ribeye and lobster risotto. Wow! I want to go back to enjoy some of those dishes again before they change the menu. My only complaint is their way of taking orders. They want you to order everything at once. That doesn't typically work for my friends and I. We like to enjoy our time together and get caught talking. I like to keep ordering as I go. I know that they're not the only place that does this. Our waiter let us split up the order because we had been waiting a while for our champagne. The only problem was it took him forever to come back and take our order for entrees. I think it's because they're supposed to take our order all at once, but also the poor guy had 90% of the tables inside! The only reason I took a star off because it seems like a management problem. My friends and I went to Communion for happy hour to celebrate my 60th birthday. It was our first visit and it did not disappoint! We had a large group and everyone from the hostess to our delightful bartender Ian was spectacular. We had some appetizers and drinks and we were so impressed with everything we tried. My favorite app was the focaccia. That bread knocked my socks off! The potatoes brava were a close second. I wish I could remember the hostesses name because she was a true hero, allowing us to move from the bar to a table without a reservation as our party grew. We went with our favorite neighbors and everything was just wonderful. There is no feeling of "stuffiness" very casual and David our waiter did a great job helping with our drink and food selections. I've dined at Communion a few times now and have had a great experience each time. Our server was friendly and knowledgeable. He was helpful when choosing several dishes to share family style and suggested some great drinks off their cocktail menu. The lamb lollipop with the za'atar yogurt was absolutely delicious! I do suggest going for their two dollar oyster special. But a lot is left to be desired. The menu is standard (fish, poultry, beef and pork). They also have a pre fixed menu which pales in comparison to other places near the area like Black Radish, For Oak, and 3131. However the issue with Communion is their staff. They are just not nice people. A friend called them the other day and the lady who picked up rudely asked if she can put him on hold and she didn't even wait for an answer. We waited nearly 10 mins on hold before giving up. The servers are great people though, they're an exception to the hosts. The place is very nice and service was fine. The caviar is a waste. There's too much cream and that's all you taste, might as well not put the caviar on it. The poached sea bass was missing a little something with more umami, which is something considering it should have been in tom yum broth which is usually packed with fish sauce. All the voices bounce off the hard surfaces making it surprisingly noisy. I felt lucky to find a good bottle of wine for $64 because most of the wine is over $100 ($104 with service charge). The cocktail list is one with hard to comprehend names and ingredients, but we took a chance, and they were good. Is $18-$20 for a drink the new standard? The food is very good and well presented. My husband and I went there yesterday for Valentines. Our reservation was at 9pm. They had a pre fixed three course meal. Everything was good except for the desserts. We each had two drinks, I had two Trouble in Paradise. I can't remember my husband's first drink, but the second one we asked the waiter if they could make an old fashion. This was not on the menu, but we thought the price for it should be between $18 and $24, since that is the prices these days for a cocktail in San Diego. She asked him if Angles Envy Rye Whiskey was good for the drink. My husband said yes. We later got the bill, and the cost for the ONE Old Fashion was $46!!!!!!!!!!!!! (Double pour of angles envy at $23 each). For that price I could have ordered a bottle of wine! For this reason I give this a 1 star and I will NEVER go back to visit. read more

We were a party of (8) and no one was wowed - except by the view. - Wine list is very extensive but without a reasonable variety of price points - Dinner rolls - when the server asked..."would you like to start with some bread?", I thought it would be a basket of bread that is typically comp'd at restaurants. Of course we said yes. But no - it was $11 for (4) "Parker" type rolls that tasted like they were from a package. And the butter was overthought with too much garlic. Just serve high quality, plain butter. And don't charge for the rolls! - Tuna Crudo - I didn't have any but heard it was delicious. - Potatoes Bravas - undercooked and super flat on flavor - Brussel Sprouts - crispy enough but again, very flat on flavor - Lamb Lollipops - this was my dish, 3 lollipops that were overwhelmingly fatty on a bed of frisee salad with a few sliced apples. WTH? For $36, it should be served with a hot starch & veggie. - Eggplant - seems chef had trouble with this dish, four people ordered it and they all agreed it was undercooked and sent it back; seems round 2 was not much better. - Seabass - three people ordered and all said it had good flavors but weren't fans of it being in a broth. We are a group of professional women who are willing to spend $$$ for a good meal and have reasonable expectations but if you're going to charge these prices - and add a 4% surcharge to the total - you need to deliver. Communion didn't deliver. So, while we appreciated the staff trying their best to turn around our disappointment by comp'ing the eggplant dishes, bringing us a comp'd crudo and a comp'd 'filet' (none of which we asked for), it was too late. The servers were fantastic (5 stars) but the food was a very underwhelming experience for us. We agreed we would not be back. And to add salt to the wound...there was a group of four women also on the terrace (which is not 100% open - there is a roof) who were ALL vaping at their table, seemingly ok by the staff.
