My husband went on and on about this place and the duck poboy. We shared one and had fries with gravy. Our friends had one as well and enjoyed it. The bread was amazing. We were not impressed with the service. There were two ladies there working the register. One was very nice. The other (Brandy) was very abrasive. We follow social distancing guidelines faithfully (6ft from others, face masks, eat outside and take to go). Once we placed our orders we were asked to wait against the counter in back. We did so. We were trying to keep a safe distance per cdc and restaurant's posted signs. My friend was standing about 4 feet from the counter. She was then told to go against the counter. Fine. She got against the counter. The woman then told us to move away from the door. We were against the counter as requested. There was a man not with our party against the counter near us and we were not going to stand on top of that man. No customers were waiting to be seen or coming in during this time... I went outside and waited until the other patron left so I would be an appropriate distance from the door and the register that the worker would be comfortable with. For years I have read the rave reviews of Crabby Jack's, but I was never in the area when they were open. A few months ago I was headed to a play and decided to stop in. The first thing I noticed is that the dining area was small and packed with people. We ordered at the counter and sought out a place to sit. Because of the small dining room, you are forced to sit at picnic style tables, often with complete strangers. Everyone seemed OK with that arrangement and carried on their conversations as if we weren't even there. It was fascinating to learn about Aunt Mable's angina while we waited for our sandwiches. In order to try more than thing we split the cochon and duck poor boy. The duck poor boy was good, but didn't amaze me like I thought it would after reading the reviews. The cochon poor boy, however was amazing. It was so good that it made me completely forget the strange seating arrangements. I really liked Crabby Jack's. We ordered the seafood combo, the fried chicken plate, the fried shrimp plate, fried green tomatoes, an order of onion rings, potato salad & chicken n sausage gumbo. The fried shrimp & seafood plates were good. The fried chicken was quite salty. The gumbo had 0 seasoning, but was great once I got home & dumped a bunch of tony's & tabasco in it. The potato was not a southern style like I expected instead it was more of a "gourmet/rustic" style with red potatoes in large broken chunks with the skins on, no egg, some dill etc. I don't care for that type so I was not a fan. The onion rings were amazing & fried to crispy perfection. The fried green tomatoes were meh. The batter kept falling off, some of them weren't actually green & they were topped with a shrimp "remoulade" which was cold & more like a shrimp salad if you ask me. It also made the batter soggy. Listen. If you want to get your money's worth, hit up Crabby Jack's. They couldn't have added any more shrimp to this Po'boy. The thing was STUFFED! The picture doesn't do it justice. We also ordered a side of Jalapeño Mac n cheese, jambalaya, and bread pudding. The jalapeño Mac n cheese.... I have no words. Just make sure you add it to your order. You order at register and they bring out food and call your name, drinks are self serve, and you clean up after yourself after you finish. Shrimp and oyster po boy was my favorite, we had them mix both throughout the sandwich so you taste both shrimp and oyster with each bite, whatever seasoing they use for this really makes for a delicious sandwich. Fleur de brees po boy - loaded with lots of different meats, has gravy so make sure you eat this quick otherwise it gets soggy. First time in NOLA - this place set the bar really high for the rest of my trip. All the staff were extremely nice and helpful. The place was decently spacious (they have long tables instead of multiple small tables so you'll be sitting next to other folks if it's packed) and was really decorated with colorful mosaic paintings! There were a couple of enticing sandwiches like alligator meat and New Orlean's staple shrimp poboys but I opted for their most popular, slow roasted duck poboy. I went with the 8 inch, which I thought seemed small at first but I was very pleased when it came out. It was loaded with meat! Much more then I expected and I needed a fork to eat some of it. It has a deep, rich flavor to it and slathered with gravy. I got their fried pickles as well and let me tell you - hands down one of the best places I've ever had these at! They offer sandwiches like Po-boys, pulled pork, brisket and sides like Mac n cheese, fries and so much more. Sandwiches come in 2 sizes ( 8in or 12in). I ordered the fried green tomatoes and shrimp remoulade. I really wanted to love it but didn't like some aspects of the sandwich. The bread reminded me of a day old Cuban, super chewy. Wish it was a different bread or a fresher bread would've been better. Shrimps were chilled but the fried green tomatoes were hot from the fryer. I didn't understand what I was eating. Different temperature within the sandwich made my palate feel confused. We also ordered side of French fries. Nothing too special, basic recipe. Tasted like it was previously frozen. Man eating lunch here really brought me back down memory lane. And what a wonderful memory it was!!! When I was in high school I used to come here and eat all the time. This hidden gem came across my timeline and I immediately texted my husband and said WE HAVE TO GO BACK TO CRABBY JACKS!! This place has so much culture built in. They are small but don't let that fool you. They feed a lot of hungry people during lunch hours and I have seen them go through tons of orders like a well oiled machine. The food is delicious and the staff are so friendly. Menu has someone for everybody and they even sell cute merchandise with the crabby jacks logo. They have a bathroom in the building next door and they take cash and card. They also do it phone orders. I haven't been in quite some time so my eyes got kinda big. I have to admit, I had never had a po-boy before coming to Crabby Jack's while on a business trip, upon a referral from a coworker who lives here. I always forget about this little gem but I happened to be going to Lowes out near Claiborne and decided to stop in. I am glad I did. It is a small shack with communal seating inside. Honestly, I don't even think they have a bathroom it is so tiny inside. I have always loved their shrimp poboys. It is my second favorite after Parkway. I ordered the shrimp and catfish plate with a side of red beans. You wait in line and pay per order. You get your drinks and silverware at the left back end of the restaurant. You have a seat and wait for your name to be called and they bring you the food and whatever else you may need like tartar sauce and what not. when I got my catfish, I forgot out delicious it was. It's not thin like Middendorfs, but thick and the batter is so lightly crusted on the fish that the fish just gently pulls apart. The shrimp had the same batter, I believe, and was so very good. I also enjoyed my red beans, they were almost as good as Popeyes. They are the sister restaurant to Jaque Imo's and makes sense why they are so good. Many people don't know about this awesome spot. Probably because of its hours and it being across that parish line. However, it does not disappoint! The atmosphere is fun and inviting, with majority of seating being at long communal tables. The staff is always, friendly, helpful, and pitching in to keep things moving, supplies restocked, and tables cleaned up. Everyone rotates what they are doing and treats every customer with the same optimism. You are able to get a delicious meal, fast and a souvenir go cup to take with you (if you wish). I would be recommend any of the poboys (dressed or not. The ingredients and that bread are so good they can stand on own without being overstuffed if that's not your thing). For sides, I would recommend the Mac and Cheese and onion rings for those that like them. Don't forget a side of crackling, it is less than $3. Only thing that was a bummer for me was to find out that the duck quesadilla was only available as a Monday special and that their hours aren't very cohesive with my schedule. I think I have found the best chicken filet po boy in the city, (at least in old Jefferson). Came here with the lady before I left for Chicago. She has been telling me about how great this place is, how much food they can give you. Well I had to try! A regular size po boy will be plenty for most people, so only order the large if you have a huge appetite.
