This is usually my go to spot in Montclair. And now they have a really excellent setup outside as well (I see people eating inside but I'm not quite up to that yet). One late afternoon after walking around Lake Temescal, my friend and I needed somewhere we could sit and finish our conversation while having a beer and bite to eat, and NOT run into anyone we knew....enter Crogan's. Having only been here once, I can say that it does seem like a spot for locals, as many of the patrons seemed to know the servers/bartenders. Unfortunately, the whole time we were there one of the bartenders (who was maybe all of 21 years old) was practically dropping her panties for some 50+ year old guy who was being just as inappropriate. Gross. But even this scene couldn't detract from the crispy, battery, steamy goodness of the fish & chips that my friend and I savored (who am I kidding? we devoured it!). I was pleasantly surprised at the decent portions of fish, but sadly disappointed with the itty bitty pile of fries that accompanied - they were good fries and I could easily have polished off twice the amount on my own. However, with the addition of a Blue Moon and Brownie a la Mode, I'd say this was a well rounded pre-dinner snack. read more

Read 2 1/2 stars. Uh oh.. Crogan's, what has happened? The menu has changed. It still has many options but is smaller than it used to be. The daily specials board used to have quite a few selections (and they were good!) but this time there was one special salad and one soup listed. But, my question is, what happened to the flavor of the food? There isn't any!! In the past, Crogan's has been a hot lunch spot. The day we went, it was maybe 1/4 full. There were plenty of employees, yet service was slow and inattentive. Drinks topped off once but never refilled once they were empty. Our server checked on us once, about 15 minutes after she brought us our food and then came back again with the bill. So, the flavor.. where did it go? I had the calamari salad. OK, the calamari was good. The salad dressing on the greens had zero flavor. I think it was just vegetable oil! I was going to ask for a side of dressing but didn't get the opportunity to since our server took so long to come back to check on us. My companion ordered the crab cakes and a small salad. The server didn't tell her that the crab cakes came with a small salad so she ended up with two salads. Huh? It would have been helpful if she would have known it wasn't necessary to order (and pay for) an additional salad. It would have been good if the crab cakes would have actually had some crab and some flavor instead of just the filler. I don't know Crogan's.. you used to be a hot spot and spot on.. we'll give you one more try but I'm not feeling too hopeful. read more

I really enjoy their chicken caesar salad. The dressing is creamy but not overly drenched, and their chicken is always tender and flavorful. Their steak sandwiches are decent as well. Of all the Montclair restaurants, it's the best one unless you feel like ordering sandwiches from the sandwich nazi (see Grinders). read more

First visit to Crogan's tonight. I was pleased. The wait staff was very attentive and the food quite decent, especially for the price. My partner had the french onion soup, which she enjoyed, and we split a wedge salad. We both had the crab and asparagus pasta -- and it was quite good and the portions were substantial. There were a lot of families with young children, and if you're adverse to having a 3 year old come up to your table and introduce themselves to you during dinner this might not be your place, but it's a popular spot and for good reason. 4 stars. read more

I was looking for a place that would appeal to both my 87 yo mother and my 13 yo daughter. I remembered seeing this place on Check Please on KQED. The reviewers were mixed and the Yelps reviews are mixed as well. Nonetheless I wanted to give this a try. My overall experience was extremely positive. Crogans is located in the Montclair Village area of Oakland. The neighborhood is quaint, very safe and extremely accessible. Very nice neighborhood to walk around or shop before or after dinner. There is abundant street parking at night and Crogan's validates parking if needed in a nearby public lot. We arrived about 5:30 on a Saturday night and were seated immediately. The hostess was very pleasant and welcoming. The menu offers a broad range of pub food. There is something that would appeal to any taste. We tried the crab sandwich, meat loaf dinner and the pan roasted chicken. They were all well prepared and portions were abundant. I tried all three dishes and would order any of them again. The Dungeness crab was very fresh and plentiful. We found the service excellent attentive, and extremely accommodating. Although their salads and soups are a bit pricey, the waiter was very happy to permit us to substitute soup or salad for the starch that normally comes with the entree. Overall a great place for families. They have a very well thought out children's menu. read more

I would give this place 2 stars but my expectations weren't very high. The old man behind the bar seems to be a burnt out old dirty old drunk but he does seem to enjoy himself and has his regulars. The food is decent but over priced. The over pricing is to be expected. Have you seen the houses that look over montclair village? Yea, you're dining with those people. I don't know that they care if a sandwich or burger worth $9.95 tops is actually $12.95. The servers are a bunch of young girls. They're good but not what you might expect from a place with $13 sandwiches and other entrees breaking the $20 maybe even $30 range sometimes. Not sure if they actually break $30? Overall a nice place to go and eat and but you do see the Montclair village price increase so expect it. *They are packed on game night. If you want to watch the game and have some drinks in this area and get away from the drama you may experience down the hill a little bit then it's a consideration. You do see the occasional dude sagging pants with the New Era cap (don't know why) but it makes for a some what diverse atmosphere and not too snobby. read more

I have been here a few times, and I must say, it gets worse every time. I went here for lunch and a bloody mary with my wife one day, and the girl behind the bar had better things to do. I am guessing she was more adept to pouring beer and serving shots, because the bloody mary's left a lot to be desired. Once you got past the taste of cracked black pepper, it tasted strongly of green olive juice and watery V-8. The sandwiches we had were "safe," but beyond that, overpriced, boring and lacking as much personality as the "person behind the bar." Most evenings here can be pleasant, but it seems that a lack of competition for a neighborhood sports bar forces many sports fans in the area to come in for overpriced, mediocre and lackluster fare. Found myself in Montclair with an hour to kill so decided on a bite and a beer. And that's exactly what i got..I wasn't looking for 'posh nosh' or silver service, just a good atmosphere and friendly staff and good value food. I was seated and served within a matter of minutes and i thought the food would suffer because of the speed of delivery, but it didn't. So a grilled chicken sandwich, a pint and some great looking waitresses made this a very pleasant dining experience for a stranger in town. I also find i hard to pass any place that labels themselves as Irish....although as far as i could make out ...i was the only Irish person on the premises!! Stopped by for happy hour had one drink and stayed about a total of 15 min. What happened afterwards is stunning. I was shushed by a patron sitting at the other end of the bar because I took a business call. There was no sign indicating you are not allowed to talk at this establishment. I replied with apologies and jokingly remarked that I didn't know this was a library. The manager came to resolve the problem, and instead he took a survey of guests in the restaurant that were bothered by me taking a business phone call. Customer service at this establishment seems catered to regulars and has a taste of racism. It's sad to see that Oakland has not evolved to cater to people outside of the color white. My wife has lived here for 15 years and her family has frequented this establishment. We were all stunned and will not hesitate to share this horrible experience. read more

The worst fish and chips I've ever had. The menu description is: "Cod fish fried crisp in a Smithwick's Irish Ale batter..." It was NOT cod, I know what code tastes like. This was a bait and switch, a much cheaper white fish, maybe tilapia or some other random soft white-fish. It was NOT crisp, the batter was very soggy. The worst part is it was NOT at all fresh. I could taste that it was at least three days old. You can always get better fish than this in the Bay Area. Always. Fries okay. Coleslaw bland, but at least fresh-tasting. It's unethical to charge $17.95 for this poor quality food and complete misrepresentation of the type of fish. I feel ripped off. Note: I ordered delivery through GrubHub and the delivery part was faster than expected, very efficient. It's just too bad the restaurant did not provide quality food, they should be removed from the Grubhub app for false advertising. read more

A restaurant attached to a bar. It is hard to say what the cusine is...a little of everything (American). The Sandwiches are fine(tri tip, French dip, Rueben and others), soup good (they always have clam chowder, black bean and a soup de jour). The pasta is OK, ribeye nice and tasty. 10 item dessert menu-heavy on the sugar (I'm partial to the beignets). They mix the menu up a little every so often (wished they had kept the Cubano sandwich). They have salads...if that is your desire,.like I said, a little of everything. Still, I am not sure how I would describe the core identity...maybe it is a bar with a dinning room attached (in which case it has typical and atypical pub food). I can't say too much about the service, I ordered to go, but the restraunt looked clean. As for the food... I had a French dip sandwich. It was really the worst French dip I've ever had. The meat was tough and chewy full of gristle. It smelled old. The cheese was barely melted and the taste was unrecognizeable The smell of the whole dish was really unappealing. I diddnt swallow the one bite I took. The dip tasted like it came from a can. The two stars are for clenliness and the fries were ok. This place is definitely an old folks restraunt. It's probably been here forever and the people who eat here are probably regulars. I probably won't go back. read more

Man I wish I could say something nice here but am driven to review this place because of the very poor treatment we received during our visit. My wife and I had been there only a few minutes and had just put in our order when we overheard the manager getting very hostile with a petite lady sitting with her mother. He stood over her and brooded down on her in an intimidating fashion with what looked like his security guard behind him. Next thing I new we were being asked to leave as well. The manager kicked the whole bar out including folks who had nothing to do with whatever was going on. There must have been over 20 customers he told to get out. Love this place. One side is fancy, the other side is an Irish sports bar. Whichever side you choose, the beer, wine and food is delicious. We enjoyed the sports on the TV, and the great tunes playing in the background, and the relaxed atmosphere in the bar. Most recently, on our way to Oakland, we stopped for lunch. I had the most amazing BLT ever (I substituted bacon for the pork belly.) Amount of mayo was perfect. My husband had what he said was the best bowl of clam chowder he has ever had. Our teen son had the fish tacos. They looked amazing, and he could not finish them. Wait staff super friendly, beverages and food came quickly. We'll be back if we are in the area again! read more

The bar is a decent place to grab a drink but it gets very loud. The bar food is mediocre. We have tried the tacos, wings, sweet potatoes and calamari. The restaurant side is much quieter but the menu & food seems like it's stuck in the 80's. The dishes lack flavor and creativity for the prices. We have tried the salmon, pizza & chicken. The burger and sliders are always pretty decent but overall Crogan's is to pricey for the quality of the food. read more
