We placed a phone order today as we normally do but wanted to try something different so we ordered saimen. How can you go wrong with wanting something hot for this cozy weather right? When placing the phone order, we were never instructed to come within a time frame. So we picked up like normal 15-20 minutes. The saimen was SHIT. It was soggy, over cooked and I swear it was in hot water with no flavor. We called to inquire on getting a partial refund because that was not acceptable especially towards normal customers. We also ordered shakes, fries and burgers. We were informed by Emi/Amy, the manager that when placing a phone order for saimen, we have to be there within 3 minutes....WHO CAN GET THERE WITHIN 3 Minutes of ordering?! And that we were supposed to instruct them to keep the noodles separate. ** it should be on the restaurant end as a curtesy to automatically have that done if you know it's a mobile order. And that no refund can be provided because the order was not picked up within 3 minutes. Talk about bad customer service. Combined review of Fish N' Chips & Patty Melt 3 1/2 stars for the Fish N' Chips: the fish they used isn't my favorite type but it was firm enough for the batter to stick to the fish without being chewy. The batter to fish ratio was good and crispy. The size of the fillets were small especially for the price I paid. The fries was okay, nothing unique about it. We wanted something quick and simple for lunch, so we headed to Cupie's Drive-In, a classic Maui pitstop serving up local favorites! I ordered their daily special, the Ribeye Steak and Eggs ($11) -- rice, macaroni salad. Although I was initially skeptical about the quality of a $11 steak plate, this particular plate lunch surpassed expectations. Not only was the steak well-seasoned, but their cooking technique allowed for a bit of Maillard browning, resulting in some delicious, caramelized crust on the outside. The eggs, however, were slightly less successful, as they were much further along in the cooking process than the over-medium that I requested. Let me also say that the staff at the walk-up window are some of the friendliest that I can recall, which was a pleasant surprise on a rather hot day! We'll be back soon! 5 stars. read more

Love going here when I work close by. There's something about their cheeseburger deluxe that's really comforting. Their fries are crinkle cut and come with a mayo/mustard and ketchup sauce to dip in! We heard from another tourist and a local of this place so we made this our last stop in Maui. We ordered their fries, Breaded Teriyaki Melt Sandwich and Breaded Teriyaki Sandwich. I used to work close by this restaurant and would go here for my lunch break. I loved the service before COVID. The staff were always nice and friendly but now they have these young girls taking orders when you drive up. Multiple times I came to this place and the girls who would take customers orders would always ignore us - there were times when the parking lot had only 3 cars and I waited 15min for someone to finally come up to us. I waved hi to a couple of girls and they turned around and continued to look at their phones, jumped/played around, or talk stories. I miss the staff pre COVID because they were more professional. Its really frustrating that the first encounter you'll get is people who don't care about their jobs. Dont get me wrong the food here is great! The prices are affordable which is very convenient. Went for dinner and ordered the special of the day ($11.97) calamansi pork chops! It was horrible! The meat was dry and over cooked and both the meat & gravy was super salty. So salty we threw it out. I ate the corn and my husband at half of one of the rice scoop. We ordered side of French fries and an order of chow fun. The chow fun was really good and it had bean sprouts, carrots and pork. Would have been even tastier if it had bacon and sliced green beans in it. We were told shoyu packs would be on the side; there were none! Oh and we only got one fork ‍. How were we supposed to eat both dishes with only one fork? Bright red and crisp white, Cupie's is inviting with a sense of old fashion flair and you get an opportunity to eat at a small piece of Maui history. Service swift and they actually had my cone ready before I even started paying. The restaurant has buzzers for larger orders so you can be seated while you wait. For around $2 you can get your craving fix for a sweet and cool treat with their ice cream cone. Ice cream was refreshing, creamy and sweet. You also have the option to have it dipped in chocolate can come in a larger size. The menu is affordable and varied. When I had visited, there were muffins for purchase as well. There is an abundance of seating spaces. So, you can come an enjoy with your family and friends. If you have little ones they have a high chair for use. With the open-air seating, Cupie's has lots of fans to keep their customers cool. Pick up window is on the left and closer towards the tables. Average of around 20 stalls for parking. If you've got the time to make a stop, do try Cupie's for your next burger fix instead of the drive-thru. Supporting local families in their small business is a great as well. I'm so sad to leave this review as Cupies has been my favorite place for burgers/shakes on Maui. We came here often over the past couple of years but it has been about 4 months since our last Cupies visit. During this time there was an ownership change that may or may not be related to the changes below. 1) Service - During our past visits we had speedy service with the servers coming directly to the car. The staff were always extremely professional and friendly, the food was served hot and fast, and our order was always correct. During this visit it appears that car service is no longer offered. This in itself wasn't a problem as they reopened a nice seating area that we actually preferred to eating in the vehicle. The unfortunate part was the service at the counter was poor. The one employee working at counter was unfriendly and offered no "hello", smile, or "thank you". The wait for the food was much longer than ever before. When the food was finally ready we found that 2 of the 3 burgers were not what we ordered (we ordered deluxe and received standard). We also requested plain ketchup and received the standard ketchup/mayo blend. We chose not to make a big deal out of this because they were relatively minor mistakes and we were hungry. 2) Food Quality - We had made the assumption that the cause of the long wait was that the food was being made fresh. We were absolutely wrong...what were once the best burgers on island with a delicious, grilled flavor are now tasteless, lukewarm burgers with a strange texture. All 3 of the burgers tasted like they were not freshly made and missing any type of flavor. On the good side...as long as you order the fries "extra crispy", they are still delicious. 3) Cost - We had an older menu in the car from the last time we had been at Cupies and realized that all of the prices have gone up significantly (i.e., fries 25% and burgers 40%). On face value, this would have been fine as the previous prices were below average. However, with such a decline in service and quality the price increase is a deal breaker. read more

Recently re-opened, this classic Maui take-out eatery has new owners. They've renovated the exterior to replicate how it was about 30 years ago with a walk-up counter. The kitchen is almost the way it was with the cooking in the back with a pass through for the food. The old outdoor eating area is back and is a nice added feature to enjoy your plate lunch with the cool island breeze. We ordered the Breaded Teriyaki, Chow Fun and of course, the Hamburger Steak (which was a special for today). The Breaded Teriyaki was pretty good. Just enough "burn" to make to crispy. The Hamburger Steak was ok. Since this was my first time ordering this, I'm always wary about it. I love a good HBS. I always judge a place, especially a local one, on how good their HBS is. The burger (hand made) it self was soft and not overcooked. A little "burn" on it would have made it better. The gravy was good but a little thin for my taste, and the mac salad was fine (it had green peas and bits of potato in it). I will always use the old Cupies HBS as the gold standard. I really hope they can get it to that. If they do...I'd be there everyday! Chow Fun. What can I say. Not bad. Bits of bacon, bean sprouts, green onion, celery, and ground pork. I always add black pepper and a ton of shoyu. Although it's not the same as the Cupies that I remember when I was a kid. The place where all the plate lunches came in a pink cardboard box, on a paper plate with a piece of wax paper covering your food (so it wouldn't stick to the box). I give the new owners props in trying to bring back an iconic Kahului eatery whI hope they keep improving. Update July 21, 2018: Three months after my initial visit, I decided to go and get some dinner. I called in my order which was graciously taken and was told it would be 10 to 15 minutes. I arrived there 15 minutes later, no line to wait in (what a relief) and my order was ready! This was a far cry from three months ago where I waited about a half an hour after I was told it would be ready in 15. They also got their credit card payment system down and if you've got the 5 Five Stars app, check in! Food: I ordered the HBS (Hamburger Steak), Breaded Teriyaki, and the Shrimp Omelette. The HBS was good. Patties homemade, and the GRAVY much better (thicker, more taste), and the Potato-Mac Salad improved, although I really would rather have just a plain ol' Mac Salad. The Breaded Teriyaki was great. More taste than the last time I ordered it. Potato-Mac or corn? Corn won this round with this plate. The Shrimp Omelette. What can I say? It was ALMOST as I remembered it with the small whole shrimp, onions and green onions, and just that right amount of "burn" on it! (I still use a lot of shoyu) Again, I do give the new owners A LOT of credit in reviving this Maui Food Institution. They've improved 100% in three months! Keep it up! This review is only getting a 3 because they messed up my order for the second time. I normally speak well of this place but lately not so much. Check out my photos, I've had a range of foods and they're all yummy. However, on my recent visit, ice cream machine broken (and it was so hot, it would've been so good but cannot help if broken). And then my French fries weren't cooked all the way. Some pieces were still raw/cold and normally they're nice and crispy and golden. Then the big one was the breaded teriyaki minus the breading. Ordered breaded Teri beef plate and breaded Teri beef sandwich. BOTH came out as just regular Teri beef which was a huge disappointment cause they're pretty much known for their breaded Teri. Out of all the places to eat on Maui, today I chose Cupies. I come here often and I usually place a phone order, pick it up, and I'm on my way. Rarely do I just pull up and place an order and the previous rare occasions, I've never had a problem. I was on the go today and I figure just pull up and park and wait for someone to assist me. As I was waiting, for about 10-15 mins, about 3 or 4 cars pulled up in to a stall. 2 of those cars got service before anybody even walked up to my vehicle. Every time they passed my vehicle they just gave me the eye. About the 3rd time I got passed I left. Word of advice, put in a phone order. There's no way for the people putting in orders to know who pulled up first therefore you could be getting cut in line. read more

We'd had heard the store had changed hands recently and decided to try the food under the new ownership. The good news is that there is now a picnic-style seating area available for the patrons, but that's about it. Sadly, the prices have gone up and food quality has really suffered. The previous owner had literally dragged their rep n name thru the mud with her God awful food. Too bad these new ones aren't doing much better. Went around 7 tonight n burgers had already sold out. Got the chow fun (decent, lots of veggies, flavor just ok). The Portuguese Bean soup was just weird--like I don't know what that hot mess was. I would describe the soup itself as more of a minestrone taste. The breaded teriyaki was definitely not up to old school standards. My co-worker on Maui told me about a local hang out that's famous for their French fries and ice cream. Too bad I didn't get the ice cream, but we stopped here for a snack: French fries. Cupie's Maui is a small little hole in the wall local fast food counter that seems like you probably would find if you were hungry and on a budget. I was glad that I had cash on me at the time, although they accept major credit cards too. With that said, I wanted the French fries - which ended up to be those crinkle cut fries that you would find in L&L Hawaiian Barbecue restaurant or any drive inn place that does that cut of French fries. I love that part of the French fry. McDonald's and Burger King can do better than that. With that said, I arrived here at Cupies Maui with my coworker around 1:45pm after a scenic drive through Kula and Makawao to see parts of Maui that I've never seen before. There was a small but nice seating area for anyone and everyone who wishes to dine here, but they only have a fast food counter that separates the customer and the kitchen. They have those beepers, which tells you when your order is ready for pick up. I ordered the fries along with a large Diet Coke. I figured it was good to get snacks before getting back to the airport for the ride home. When I was eating, my co-worker and I started chatting to one of the staff at Cupies, who happened to be on her break. She talked about working two jobs to support herself and she says she used to run marathons too back in the day, but life nowadays had shifted priorities. It was nice to talk to her about my 50 states marathons journey and my recent races in Waikoloa and Lahaina over the weekend. She seemed impressed. The overall experience here at Cupies Maui was nice, casual, interesting, and meaningful. Meaningful because of the chat I had with the Cupies Maui staffer and how life does give you some perspective on things when you least expect it. Or something presents itself to you and you gotta decide to grab the opportunity or just let it go for another one down the road. It was definitely unexpected but needed when we stopped here. It helps sometimes when direction on life is necessary or when a different way of seeing life is shared. At least that's how it was for me. The Cupies dining area consists of maybe 8 picnic like benches, where diners can enjoy their food at their leisure. It was relatively clean and I don't think they have fee WiFi here. It was basically being a local while trying out local places without the resort area prices. Cupies Maui is located at 134 W Kamehameha Avenue, really next door to the Maui Mall. They accept major credit cards and cash. They have a private parking lot for anyone and everyone who arrives in a car - privately own or rented. It's all good. Not sure about Maui's public transportation, but it's an easy walk from the Queen K Center. If you don't like that, uber and lyft can get you her with no trouble at all. They can solve your travel needs without a rental car! For the most part though, coming to Cupies Maui drive inn is a good thing. It helped me put things into perspective and gain some insight as to what's important in this life, amongst the french fries and the diet soda. I think I'll be back, especially since it's near the airport and a great way to get food after arrival to Maui or get something to go before boarding your flight out of Maui. We spent about 45 minutes here before cruising closer to the airport. It is nice to have Cupies in Maui to serve the community. While I have tasted many similar versions of french fries that Cupies serves, it's one of my favorite versions to eat. I would definitely recommend coming here if you are coming to Maui and need something satisfying or on a budget. Or both. Steer clear of resort area pricing and dine where the locals go. You'll be glad you did. The area is somewhat ghetto though, but be prepared for that. It's a local eatery that I missed for so many years till I discovered it through my co-worker in 2020. So, the only time in recent years I've been to Cupie's was in 2016 - before the renovation. I had the cheeseburger deluxe with fries, which I thought was pretty good. I remember the place was pretty run down and my mom had said that the place used to have really good food, but just wasn't the same the last time she tried it. I unfortunately don't know what it was like "back in the day," so I have nothing to compare it to. Fast forward to present times, the place has undergone a huge makeover and looks much more comfortable and inviting. They seem to have gotten rid of the hot line of foods they used to have up front, which looked like they hadn't been stirred in hours. It seems like everything is more made to order (although I'm sure they still have to cook in batches). I like the order buzzers they've included - pretty convenient. The staff are all friendly. The chocolate shake and crinkle cut fries with mayo/mustard I ordered were delicious. However, the cheeseburger deluxe seems drier and thinner compared to the first time I tried it in 2016. My boyfriend suggested that if they toasted the bun and had a juicier patty or more sauce it would be better. Also, the breaded teriyaki - the showstopper - was tender but soggy.
