A quick update as I've tried a few more dishes. FOOD: Breaded Teriyaki Plate - $12.57 I was hesitant to try this as I really don't care for teriyaki meat as its flat, overcooked texture does nothing for me. Wow! I really liked this version as the breading gave a nice crunch to the exterior of the tender, sweet & savory meat. I chose mac salad as a side instead of corn, though the salad was very bland and needed an infusion of salt and seasonings. Other than that, highly recommended! Chopped Steak - $11.97 While plentiful, this was disappointing compared to the versions found at Uptown, Poi By The Pound and the defunct Archie's (which was my favorite, BTW) as the flavor and texture was mundane. There was no char to the meat or onions with their boiled-like consistency and color. If it was stir fried or flat top-grilled, the heat needs to be turned up to give it some burn. Shrimp Omelet - $8.93 My curiosity finally got the best of me as this was one of the original Cupies' staple items. The omelet was chock full of shrimp, a sprinkle of green onions, perfectly salted and cooked. Being a sodium freak, I drizzled on some shoyu and went to town. My only gripe is that it was too small! One more egg, please. Chow Fun I tried this a few months ago and it was good. The noodles are the dry-type (Hula-brand?) and finished with chunks of pork rather than the ground variety. SERVICE: I phoned in my order and it was ready for curbside pickup when I arrived. The female server who approached me first wasn't the friendliest as she was young with that sassy attitude/personality. But, the other young lady that delivered my food was right on. TIP: Definitely call in your order to save time. They'll ask what kind of car you're in, you park against the wall and your food is brought out to you. How simple is that? My friend told me about this place and said the next time I go to Maui that I have to get a one of their famous shakes ($5.50) or their slushie floats ($5.34). Well with all this travel restrictions and the Covid-19 cases are on the rise, I don't know when is the next time I will be coming back to Maui so I did what any good Yelper woud do, yes I got one of each! Pro tip, you can combine different flavors for your shakes and slushies. There is 12 different flavors of slushies, 35 different flavors for shakes. Now do some combinations and the flavor profiles could be endless. I got a Ube and Honey Dew slushie and it was really refreshing. I got a Taro and Passion Fruit shake and boom shaka laka my taste buds sent shock waves to my brain and I couldn't stop myself from finishing it all. I also got the Cheeseburger Deluxe ($3.29) and the crinkle cut fries ($2.87). TBH when I saw the cheeseburger I thought meh. Then I took my first bite and I have to say it was a nice juicy burger. I thought it could of had a bit more seasoning but it was a good burger. The crinkle cut fries were a winner. They have a side cup of ketchup and mayo and dipping the fries in it made my eyes roll back. They do offer meatless items such as fried egg sandwich, beyond burger, beyond plate lunch and a garden salad. Another Pro tip: because of the Covid-19, they are going old school where you park your car and these wonderful people actually come to your car window (make sure to be wearing your mask) and takes your order. I hate to give a review like this to people that I'm sure are trying This place was recommended so when I arrived I saw the daily lunch plate special which was sweet and sour pork spare ribs, rice and salad. Since the restaurant is entirely for take out I took it to my car to eat and after one bite had to go back and ask for something else. The ribs were almost all fat and the sauce was odd. I asked what I should get and she recommended the saimin noodles with beef. I came back to my car to eat took one bite and threw it out. The meat was inedible. Love Cupies. I brought my mom to Cupies 1 year anniversary (new owners) celebration when she was visiting and she loves Cupies too. I'm honestly not a huge fan of breaded teriyaki but the few times that I've had it, it's been really great. My other favorites are their cheeseburger deluxe with their crinkle french fries and their shrimp omelette. Surprisingly I haven't had their shakes yet but I will have to bring the mister and the little man so we can try a couple of their shakes. I always have an ice cream cone though which is perfect if I am waiting for my food :) LOCATION: Located right off of Kamehameha Avenue between the library and gas station. Parking can get really tight but people are usually in and out of there. If there's no parking, people park on the street and also across the street. SERVICE: Always great. Best slush float that I've ever had! I'm a sooooper fan of ube and figured that I'd try a float instead of a pure slush or milkshake for my first time at Cupies. It was the perfect mix of creaminess without the heaviness of a standard shake. The vanilla soft serve was delicious and reminded me of Dairy Queen. I was conflicted on what to order for lunch but settled on the sweet and sour spare ribs since it was one of the daily specials. Although I didn't expect any pineapple with the dish, I was pleasantly surprised to get them. Clearly canned fare but the fruit helped to add juicy sweetness to the slightly dry meat. The sauce was solid and the macaroni salad was on point. The ratio of macaroni to mayonnaise was excellent. The best part was that this plate lunch didn't put a dent in my wallet! It's been AGES since I first tried Cupies when a friend brought it over from Maui. Of course we had to go back & get some breaded teriyaki, since for some reason, it's never made it here to Oahu. No, it's not the same as meat jun and it the same as gyu (beef) katsu. It's more like teriyaki beef coated with chicken fried steak batter. So ono!! The teriyaki flavor is a touch sweet and gingery. The breading was crispy and sturdy--it even survived rehearing in the frying pan (we had leftovers). We also got fries--they're the crinkly cut old school ones & they come with mayo/ketchup dipping sauce--we loved them. And the fruit punch really packed a punch--it's so concentrated that we took it home and put it in a pitcher because we added so much water to it (yeah, we are old and cannot handle full strength fruit punch any more!). Syrupy fruit punch is way better than watery! Cupies is old school. You park & they come to you to take your order. It's a great thing, especially during current times. The order takers/food deliverers were friendly and efficient. They even double checked to make sure someone had taken our order. I grew up on Maui... and Cupies was a go to spot after school. It's always nice to when an old spot re-emerges with the same menu. To say that I was excited to try out the Cupies 2.0 is an understatement. Cupies is in the exact same spot behind the old Sears of Kaahumanu Shopping Center. They have 10 parking stalls and when you pull up and park... a nice attendant/waiter approaches your car to take your order. Talk about convenience! I love it. I don't even have to step out of the car. These waiters are masked, friendly and carry the menus in hand. There is an option to phone in an order and there are designated stalls for those who do. I ordered the special of the day... on a Wednesday... it was Pot Roast Pork. And I had to get my high school days' favorite, the breaded teriyaki. It was a short wait... less than 5 minutes and my order was ready. The special was so yummy. I like a good balance of meat with fat. It's so much more juicy that way... it didn't disappoint. The breaded teriyaki hit the spot. It's not the exact flavor that I remember... but maybe my taste buds have changed over the years. I kinda remember that the meat was more tender and the breading would be falling off and a bit mushy. But the Cupies reboot is more crunchy and saltier. Not complaining though... I liked it! Was 'ono. For me, I wish that they'd offer a toss salad as an option. But I chose the Mac salad and corn so that I could try both. It was standard. Cute drive up diner in Kahului. You drive up and a worker will come to your vehicle and hand you a menu to order. We had their famous breaded teriyaki, overloaded dry mein, and a haupia and ube(sweet potato) milkshake. The breaded teriyaki was delicious! It's crispy on the outside but juicy and full of flavor. The plate comes with 2 scoops of white sticky rice and a scoop of macaroni salad and a generous portion of breaded teriyaki meat. The loaded dry mein was just ok. It was definitely loaded with veggies and meats but lacked flavor. The milkshakes were soooo creamy and flavorful. Both milkshakes tasted had authentic ube and haupia flavors. Very rich and creamy. I am only speaking for the milkshakes because its been over a week & it's still on my mind. Was so happy to see that all the old time favorites were brought back to Cupies as that was a favorite of mine whenever my family & I would go into town. After dinner nearby, the boyfriend was craving dessert & suggested coming here. I quickly agreed as I had been wanting to stop by for a while. We both had the milkshakes on our mind & my goodness there were so many choices. I probably changed my mind at least 3 times. Finally decided on the fruity pebbles & the bf got strawberry. Didn't wait too long till it was ready. Mine tasted spot on to the flavor, fruity pebbles heaven! I'm wondering if it's made with ice milk as it wasn't overly creamy which was great. It was also the perfect consistency, so it was able to be sipped up through the straw. I think mine was way better, but the strawberry was also good, the perfect flavor to ice milk ratio was used. After seeing the commercials, I had to come by my next Maui trip. Came for lunch and found a short line and a pretty bustling eating area. The orders were taken pretty fast and the food order didn't take that long considering how many people were waiting. There is lot of seating sheltered or under umbrellas. They have water misters that line the roof edge to keep it cool. Large lot for cars. Drive in comfort food is what you get treated to. They have a vast menu of items and I had a hard time picking what to eat so got a few things. Mini chow fun. I love noodles, especially thick noodles. The mini portion was the perfect snack size and allowed me to try their chow fun without getting too full. Good flavor, had some ground pork and vegetables. Cheeseburger deluxe. Made to order, soft bun and veggies to add some volume. Juicy patty. And as if that wasn't enough, their chili cheese fries caught my eye so I had to have an order. Hefty serving and full of flavor. Drove by this location a few times and have always wanted to try. My auntie even got catered food from here awhile back. When I was finally in the area I stopped by for lunch. Parking was pretty tight so I attempted it a few times. There is a ginormous menu to choose from and also they have daily specials. Just felt like a burger day; sometimes mama just wants a cheeeseburger, you know? Kind of ordered a simple meal not too hard to mess up. Ordered the deluxe which was with lettuce and tomatoes and also chili cheese fries which come with thick fries. Like the kind you could get in lunch room at school. It was a hot day and they have a fan on while you wait for your order. They also give you a pager when it's ready. There were quite a few benches to sit on outside. Okay gang...........time to update my review of this joint called - "Cupies Maui". Cupies is a little small drive inn tucked away on a side street in Kahului. I mainly came back here due to the recommendation from my reliable Maui Yelp buddy - Michelle S. (she sure knows her grindages!), and my Yelp buddy from Oahu - Bruddah Ric C. who had gone here recently and posted some AWESOME foodie pics of his grindages! So much has changed since I last came to Cupies back in August 2015, as the entire drive inn has been renovated! The restaurant is now clean, and say "goodbye" to the dingy broken down seating/tables within the old restaurant! New wood, and some fresh paint sure does a restaurant good!!!! Upon arriving at the drive inn, it appears that the food menu has changed a bit too, as the menu is now simple, with just a few items listed. The time I came here back in 2015, I swear there was "premade" food in warmers, and they offered more food items on the menu. Although there are some minor changes, not to worry gang.............. keeping da menu "simple" is sometimes a good thing because you can just concentrate on doing the few items you make, and perfecting the dish! What drew me back here was when Bruddah Ric C. had posted this Shrimp Omelet he had eaten here recently.........after looking at da pic, Bruddah Fran had to "Chance 'Em!" Upon arriving at the drive inn, I took a quick look at the small menu, but I already knew what I came here for........dat Shrimp Omelet!!! What can I say about da grindages???? Da buggah was ONO!!! Lots of shrimp was loaded inside of the omelet, and I loved the sweet onions, & green onions that was packed with the shrimp, inside of my omelet. Cupies Drive-In originally opened up in 1964 and became a staple in the local community over the decades, serving up classic favorites like their famous breaded teriyaki beef. Earlier this year, the restaurant was acquired under new ownership, revived, and given a much needed face lift in terms of paint, tables, chairs. I'm happy they kept the Cupie's name and are attempting to bring it back to it's former glory as patron's can again get similar favorites like the good ol' days. They're keeping the menu simple, serving up hamburgers, sandwiches, your typical plate lunches, omelette plates, & ice cream treats. I've visited the restaurant a handful of times since it's opening and couldn't pass up trying their breaded teriyaki again, one of my favorite local dishes. Unfortunately, it's been a hit or miss and still not quite as good as I remembered it to be. I've also tried their chopped steak which turned out to be really dry. Their soft serve ice cream and malt shake were ok -- I really wanted more of that malt flavor though. The real winner for us has been their hamburgers/cheeseburgers. The flavor is great and really tastes homemade; much better than a few mainstream establishments just down the street and is something we would go back for again and again. The food does comes out pretty quickly though, even on busy days, which leads me to believe it's not all made to order. Overall though, they're A-OK. Not good, not great, but you may find some gems in there! They're open late on weekends, until midnight, which isn't common here and they offer discounts to kupuna which is a nice touch. "Bringing back da Happy Days" Cupies has been a Maui mainstay for locals and visitors alike since 1964. The original owners sold the business in 2003 and from what I understand, the original magic faded over the years as did the paint, fixtures, etc. Like a relic from a bygone era, Cupies looked destined for extinction. (See Fran C's review of Cupies from a few years ago) But then in the first quarter of 2018 it was announced that Cupies was under new ownership and the goal was to bring back Cupies to it's original luster- both physically and menu wise. Old favorites being offered again like Breaded teriyaki, da burgers, and dat oh, so delicious root beer float. On this first visit under new ownership we opted for the shrimp omelet plate, cheeseburgers, fries and root beer floats. The food was tasty, having the fries with the Maui specialty mustard/mayo and catsup dip added to the trip down memory lane. Service was cheerful and friendly although a tad slow. Was pretty busy for a Thursday night. The outside dining area with new tables/benches and a fresh coat of paint looked warm, inviting and especially great because of the festive holiday decorations of December. Cupies reminds me of Cafe100 in Hilo and Chunkys by the old Honolulu Stadium (although Chunkys is long gone) in terms of the layout and feel. From this first visit (in a long time) I did not see any fried/broasted chicken offerings so I assume they are still perfecting what they will eventually serve. (unless it is sometimes offered as a daily special). Will check on it the next time I'm on Maui, or wait for Maui culinary great Michelle S or Fried Chicken Fran C to report :) Give'm a try when in da area. Man. I've been coming here for years. I always get my POG slushee. Today I was walking by and decided to walk up and get one. What the brought out was a white slushee. I told them that I ordered a POG and they insisted that it was. If you don't know, POG if bright orange... I figured maybe they had moved to colorless flavorings. When I drank it there was no flavor at all. It was basically sugar flavored slush. I am very disappointed. When I went back a different girl also insisted that it was POG. They are employing lazy girls who don't have a problem lying to their customers. If I could I would have given no stars for my experience today! read more

A really sweet girl took our order and then we waited in our car. Our order was brought to our car and we were off to find a cool shady spot to eat our lunch. We ordered the TeriBeef plate which comes with rice and mac salad and we ordered he hamburger steak plate also with rice and mac salad. It was good, not bad at all but just good. I ordered food earlier on the phone. We asked for 2 breaded Teri sandwiches but, they didn't hear that over the phone I guess. Even though, whoever was on the phone repeated our order TWICE & still got it wrong. We went to pick up our food & that's when we noticed they didn't hear us say TWO breaded Teri not ONE so, we just got another one. My niece went up to the counter to ask for another one. The girl with that patterned headband started being rude to a 13 year old, like seriously you're an adult & you're being rude to a child. My niece was trying to ask for another Teri sandwich but, that girl with the headband was like "yea hold on I'm looking for your order"..... even though my niece JUST said another worker gave us our order but they forgot ONE Teri sandwich. Teach your employees how to be kind, especially to children. Kindness is free.
