After reading my Yelp buddies - Maria P. & Vince N. reviews (as they are one my reliable Maui sources), I decided to head over to this little food truck called -"Da Nani Pirates" located in a gravel parking lot in the upper section of the Azeka Shopping Center mall. Yes gang, great grindages served out of a food truck...........can you believe it???? Da Nani Pirates offers an array of items - tacos, salads, sandwiches, wings, wraps, & some appetizer items. The whole key about coming here is ordering the right item, as some items are probably done better than other items. The day I came here I had my heart set on some Fish Tacos! As I walked up to the ordering counter, I was greeted by a friendly girl (who was the owner of this wonderful business), and I asked her what kind of fish were they using for their fish tacos that day? She in turned replied that they were using Ono (Wahoo) that day. Sounded good to me, so I proceeded to order the Original Fish Taco plate, which was a grilled Ono fish taco (you get 3 fish tacos). Now if you're not into fish, they do offer other types of tacos.........some of the other tacos that they offered were- 1. Garlic Shrimp tacos 2. Seared Ahi tacos 3. Pulled Pork tacos 4. Vegetarian Tofu tacos 5. Beer Battered Fish tacos So you can see that they offered a little bit of everything to hopefully meet one's palate. As for me...................I was here to the Fish Tacos & I was so happy I got it! The Fish Tacos came is a soft tortilla shell, the fish was grilled to perfection, and the tacos were topped with some kind coleslaw vegetable mixture that had a slight sweetness to it. After I topped off my Fish Tacos with some hot sauce, I had the perfect balance to heat, sweetness, and the firm texture of the Ono fish! YUMMO!!!! After downing my 3 fish tacos, I was pretty satisfied.............not too stuffed, just right, perfect so I could get on with the rest of my day at work without feeling bogged down or sleepy. I know you folks maybe wondering if you buy food from a truck, would there be a place to eat your food? CERTAINLY my friends! Da Nani Pirates food truck is situated in a food truck parking lot with other food truck businesses, and in the center area is several covered picnic tables where you can sit & eat your food. Now bear in mind, depending on when you come here, it can get pretty hot on a nice sunny day (like the day when I came here), so be ready to rough it out if needed. Took the drive from Kaanapali to Kihei upon demand from the wife who looked up this place and from the glowing recommendation from Maui CM Maria. It was a little hard to find (for me) as I thought that it was located in the same mall as the Safeway and circled around that complex for a few minutes, and then realized that it was not in that mall but about a block further down. The truck was located in a small area which was semi permanent with several picnic benches and about 7 other food trucks there as well. I had to try the Fish & Chips, but also doubled down and ordered the Garlic Shrimp. The fish and chips were as advertised with a perfectly fried fish fillet (there were 4 of them) with a generous side of chips (curly fries) and a two sauces, one a dill sauce and the other a non spicy aioli sauce. The portions were generous and the fish marvelously prepared. The Garlic Shrimp were served with a side salad, rice, and Mac & Cheese. The Shrimp were delicious in the butter and garlic sauce, as I used the extra sauce to soak into the rice. Service was prompt and friendly, and they even made sure to say goodbye when we left to go to the car. This was a really nice find, and even thought a side food truck, was one of the more memorable meals of our trip! read more

It was our first time eating here and it was not to disappoint! We ordered the fish and chips to share between 2 after hearing from multiple people how great they were. The fish was ono and it was battered to perfection. The batter was a thin layer of flakey goodness that didn't overpower the fish and fried til golden brown. The chips were curly fries which was a nice surprise rather than traditional steak cut fries. Two sauces were provided - one dill tartar and another sauce that said Lilikoi but I didn't taste any. Overall, food was tasty and service was 5/5! We didn't have to wait more than 7 mins for our food and the lady working the window was more than kind. We'll be back for sure! read more

Perfect for Ash Wednesday: not busy. I didn't try their fish and chips - which was the reason I chose this place, based on a Yelper's review. I was hypnotized by the picture of their Seared Ahi Wrap... ahhhhh... The Ahi Wrap was a little cool to my touch, but that could have been because of the blustery evening wind that buffeted our bodies (tip: take food to go). The tasty, colorful greens including a crunchy bit here and there. I should have clarified if their sandwiches had nuts or not. Their menu didn't specify. I will check it out next time. The Ahi was cooked perfectly and my favorite part was their tangy-sweet dressing, which was lightly included, and not soaked. I would like to order additional dressing but on the side. The Ahi Wrap sandwich plate included rice and macaroni salad for $13.99. I could have upgraded to sub-seasoned fries for an additional $2 but then I would have been at $15.00. Nope. My hubby ordered the fish taco plate, and he got three tacos for $14.99, but no fries. The Ahi Wrap was - weirdly - a better value (?) - if you like your carbs (and I do, I do...). The macaroni salad and rice were delish but I sadly parted with half of it, because, as mentioned, I like my carbs... but too much. We came to this place with a much if food trucks for lunch and we came here to get pork sliders fries and onions rings. The fries that came with the sliders and the onion rings were sooooo crunchy and had so much flavor they were sooooooooo goooood. The slider was ok it was a regular pulled pork sandwich one thing that wasn't that great though was the buns were soaked in bbq sauce which wasn't that great. Pretty good spot for lunch. read more

Yummmm I've only tried their ahi tuna tacos but MAN THEY ARE GOOD! Tender, melt in your mouth, moist and so perfectly seasoned! And not too salty! The combination of the sauce, Mac nuts and feta was spot on. Would definitely come back and try out other items on their menu! read more

I believe this food truck is normally parked behind the Azeka Shopping Center in Kihei but I got the chance to try them at the Maui Sunday Market in Kahului. I'm a fan of fish and chips, so when I read our Yelp CA Maria P's review, I bookmarked them immediately as she, like me, has eaten the real deal in London. MENU: Burgers, fish & chips, wings, tacos, salads, sandwiches, shrimp. FOOD: Fish & Chips - $13.95 I received 2 1/4 pieces of fish and an obscene amount of chips (fries). The fish were coated in a deliciously creamy batter, moist and cooked perfectly crispy, but super oily. I could see the fish resting in fryer baskets but perhaps a power nap on some paper towels would help absorb some of the oil. A sole dipping sauce came with, which was a really dill-y yet tasty tartar sauce. The chips, according to others' photos were supposed to be curly fries but, the mountain of spuds that I received were mostly stripped of their skins, leaving thin, soggy strings of potatoes that resembled udon noodles. A few pieces of potato missed the cutter and came sliced scalloped-style. I can forgive the oily fish as this is a deep-fried dish but the mess of chips killed it. SERVICE: Counter service was friendly and professional. I was quoted a 30 minute wait time and they were very accurate as I waited about 25 minutes due to their busyness. OVERALL: Very good fish. This place is amazing. I ordered the Calypso, which is a fish sandwich with both fried grilled fish. I think there were about 3-4 large fish pieces in the sandwich. First, it was huge! I ate it for lunch and I wasn't hungry for the rest of the day. The dressing/coleslaw inside the sandwich was really light and flavorful - complimented the fish extremely well. It also came with curly fries, which is a huge plus to me. Price was a little steep ($16), but considering the size and how it lasted me two meals it's totally worth it. I hate to write a poor review for Da Nani Pirates, especially after being loyal customers of their food truck for years and also recommending them to many friends and visitors (they truly have some of our favorite tacos).. so why 1 star?? Because their business practice is shady, and by reading the reviews I see I am not the only one who is having this experience. A few months ago, I placed an order online for three plates of tacos trio, I got a charge and confirmation text with the time that my order would be ready for pickup. I arrived, waited in the car for the time, and then came out only to find that the truck was closed (I checked online and saw they were in fact "open" so I called Kahului Da Nani location and the man on the line was shocked at first to hear that Kihei location was closed then after a brief hold acted like everything was fine and issued me a refund.) I brushed it off as a one time thing and continued to come to their location for tacos, then surprisingly October 31st the same thing happened to us again! But this time, Da Nani Pirates did not answer my phone calls from Kihei or Kahului locations, I had hungry family in the car so had to order from another truck which meant I had to wait additional time, and when at a later day I called to ask for a refund the Kihei staff answered and said I can text a photo of the receipt and they will issue a refund and will text back. They did not text back. Half a week later- no refund, the locations are "open" online but not Kihei nor Kahului are answering my calls and I can't even leave a voice message because their inboxes are full at all three locations. Leaving this review in hopes that this will reach whoever is in management so that other customers will not be scammed like this where they get charged for food, made to wait and believe that their order is ready and then having their money stolen because no service nor food was given in return for payment. read more

YAH some seriously amazing fish 'n chips with that translucently greasy-crisp herb-flecked coating ... Good fries too. The fish itself was good ... but not that extra melt-in-your-mouth quality that I would expect from Maui; I suspect it's your garden variety cod like we get on the mainland ... but the way they do it is exceptionally good. Caught sight of a worker/owner who seemed to be Caucasian ( who was not wearing a mask) of this establishment making it seem like they needed to cough towards an older women wearing a face mask. Seriously, rates are high on Maui. I don't know know is she was a local or if the worker is a transplant here on Maui, not cool. Respect people especially if they could be supporting your business. On a hope and a prayer. As most on Maui know, the restaurants normally close earlier than most anywhere on earth. So saying this, at 8:20pm, we showed up at Da Nani Pirates in Kihei with a prayer they were still open and we didn't have to eat at Taco Bell. They were closing up and I was hoping to get myself a burger and the catch of the day for my wife. Little did I know that Dane and Dustin were there to save the day, or night. I asked if they were still open and they said yes. I asked are you sure? They both told me that if we needed food, they were there to feed us. So this was the second time on our trip that we are here and I always wait to rate a place based on multiple visits. So here we go. Food: excellent! I had this crazy burger that was absolutely delicious! My wife had the catch of the day plate and she loved it, literally ate all of it. I did the best as I could on the burger as it was the size of a grown man's face. Flavors were there, sauces were great, and the sear on the burger was on point. I also order the Mac salad, my favorite on the island so far. So after the second time eating here, 5-stars! Customer service: I can not thank Dane and Dustin enough for going above and beyond to feed us when we wanted some real food. I hates to ask for them to cook after they were closed, but they did it with a smile. They didn't rush it either, they politely asked us to wait about 10 minutes so they can take their time to make it right. We quickly agreed. As you can tell from above, Dane and Dustin both put in great effort to make us high quality food when they could of said no and gone home for the night. They didn't and I am writing this as I am full and happy! Dane and Dustin, you two both are the epitome of Aloha. Like I said, above and beyond! Thank you both for making our night! Fantastic pineapple salsa! A month after my trip to Maui, I am still craving this Pineapple salsa with some fish and shrimp tacos. Honestly, I cannot stop thinking of the food we could throw this on. The friendly chef of this food truck is amazing and fed my family a couple times on our vacation even remembering my wife's name. Additionally as an added bonus, you get to dine wile watching cartoon classics such as kung-fu Panda, Surfs up and more. I can't stop thinking about the tacos here and its making me want to book another trip to Maui just to hit up this pirate food truck in Kihei. Five stars? Yes five stars! I had my doubts, but one bite of their fabulous fish tacos made them all disappear. We stumbled upon this food truck quite by accident. There were several other options that looked enticing, but based upon the reviews by my Yelp friends we decided to give Pirates a try. Not sorry! The friendly worker suggested trying three different tacos: the original grilled ono, the battered ono, and the shrimp. Each was delicious in its own way and far surpassed my expectations. The flavors were a perfect combination and the textures perfect. They definitely have the secret sauce. It was a lot of food, but I couldn't not finish something so tasty. The food truck area is cute with some shade and colorful tables (although they were quite sticky and could use a good cleaning). My recommendation is to hurry over and have yourself the best fish tacos you've ever had. read more

Wow, I don't know where to even begin with this review. Talk about an all-over-the-place experience. Some of the food is absolutely perfect, some of the food is so-so. The portions can be huge or unreasonably measly. The service is atrocious. The guy was in a bad mood and worked really slow. I wish I could take back some of my healthy tip I gave him at the beginning of the order. The coconut prawns are some of the best on the island. We ordered the captain's plate which was supposed to have prawns, calamari and curly fries. They were out of calamari so they added a couple more prawns. I ended up with 5 I think. Not a huge portion but enough to try and share. Everyone loved them. The curly fries was an absolute joke of a portion size though. I think we had 5 mediocre sized potato curls and a few fry crumbs. Embarrassing really. The garlic prawns were a family favorite too. Lots of prawns and sauce over some tasty rice. Not much rice, but enough I guess. It also came with some decent mac salad. We asked for pineapple BBQ wings and they served us 6 overcooked unseasoned wings. They were pretty much a dry crisp of meat on each wing. The 6 of us each took one, and then we realized that there was no flavour. I went to the food truck and asked if there should be sauce and he said "I didn't know what flavour you wanted so I just gave them to you plain" I asked for sauce in a cup to go with what little chicken we had left, and he just grumpily squirted a tiny but in the box of chicken. NEVER come to this place if you want to find hair in your food, have your order forgotten, & have rude, unprofessional staff members not even offer an appropriate solution to fix either situation. We waited way longer than we should've for a single burger b/c "the guy in front of y'all made a big order," but in reality, it was just cause they forgot about our order. When I told them I found a piece of hair in our food, they didn't give a rats ass & didn't even apologize. Just stared at the hair. We ordered from here b/c of all the good reviews, but this turned into such an unpleasant experience.. I've been wanting to try this place for the longest time and finally made the decision to drive to the south side food trucks. Best decision ever! Customer service is action and the food is bangers. A bang for your buck. No doubt. Price may be a little high for some but it is definitely worth it. The seared ahi tacos had the right amount of flavors and were cooked flawlessly. The crispy calamari is the best I've had compared to high end restaurants and other places I've eaten calamari from. The calamari is also not doughy/greasy/bready. There are thick pieces of the calamari and sauce is amazing. Fits perfectly. My girlfriend also got their fish and chip and loved it. Food: 5 stars Service: 4.5 stars Value: 5 stars I'm a big fan of these guys, although somehow I've only ever tried their Kihei location. My favorite item: the pulled pork sliders - honorable mentions go to the seared ahi tacos and salad. The big kahuna is ridiculously huge and delicious as well - but it is so gigantic it's impossible for a normal (or large) human to consume. My husband is the size of an average NFL linebacker and he couldn't finish it. Da Nani Pirates is great for a night when you want reasonably priced food with good portions - and I would say their pulled pork sliders beach out those at Aloha Thai Fusion which is probably the closest comparison for the price/area/convenience. Only downside is that they fairly regularly sell out of menu items - so don't wait until it's too late! Food delivery services do deliver for them, but sometimes don't have their full menu available. read more

Joel runs the front of the truck and is so friendly and helpful. He recommended the fish and chips to us. We've come back 3 out of 4 nights and ordered at least one of those. They are generous with the sauces so you don't need extra. I recommend stopping by this food truck court and at least getting that or the curly fries. Great fish tacos and sandwich! I got the taco sampler with 1 shrimp, 1 original and 1 beer battered ono all with topped with various slaws and sauces. The beer battered one was definitely my favorite on the 3. My husband got the Calypso so sandwich, a hearty fish sandwich to fulfill his huge appetite! Although he did finish it two people could definitely share it. The address did not bring us to the location though it brought us to the Safeway parking lot and ended up having to go a little further down the road to the AzekaMauka center.
