I dropped out of time with Bill & Ted and found myself in the Dairy-ette parking lot. Still owned and operated by the same family since 1956. I consider myself a burger expert so based on the recommendation of another blog I went to Dairy-Ette. The place has maintained its cool old-school vibe, down to the magnetized letter signs that used to hang in every deli back in the day and the car-hop overhang outside. I was expecting Marty McFly or Biff Tannen to walk in any minute and get something to eat. Honestly, I don't get why they have the rep for great burgers in Dallas. My cheeseburger was pretty garden variety from a taste standpoint. It wasn't seasoned as is done at my favorite spots. It was cooked just fine, but I didn't see why it was so highly regarded. The fries were hand-cut and thin but pretty good. The root beer is fantastic. They make it at the restaurant and it comes in a frosted mug. Total cost of a cheeseburger, fries, and a root beer was $8 (heads up: they only accept cash). The service was good but I wouldn't go out of my way for this place unless it was for some fries and a root beer float. Still, a step-up from McDs and other fast-food fare. The aesthetics are great. The people are great. But I go to a restaurant for food first, and those other things are a distant second and third. Quality is the main issue - for the price that is. The money spent for a bacon double cheese burger, tater tots, and large soda is fine when the food is good, but that's not what I got. The burger was just okay. It was hard to find the bacon, the cheese was sub par and the meat looked humiliated, probably because it was thin and tasteless. Luckily the pickles and mustard provided some familiar goodness The ration of tots was miniscule and came at a hefty price. If your searching out that old dive experience - hey, go for it. Stopped by for lunch today. Its been around since 1956 so it probably gets some cool points for being nostalgic and the drive in type service. I ordered a cheese burger with bacon, forgot to get grilled onions and also ordered the home cut fries. The Burger was very good not too big, very well seasoned and tasty. The fries on the other hand were fresh and nicely cut but not seasoned. you will have to add season to taste. I'm not a big fan of root beer or floats so i didn't bother indulging . I ordered the fresh lemonade and it didn't do the trick for me. I saw a few other items on the menu that i will like to try our like the Chicken fried steak and a host of other things so whenever i am in the GROVE i will try and get those in and out of the way. read more

I did a little internet research and discovered that Dairy-ette makes its own root beer!! I came in with a friend, mid-afternoon on a Sunday, and the people who work here are super sugary sweet. We ordered 2 root beer floats in a frosty mug (a steal at under $3 each) and some tater tots. The root beer floats were DIVINE, while the tater tots were just ok. We slurped up our floats in no time. Next time, I'll try the burgs. I love the retro flavor of this place and the neighborhood - and the gumball machines are still at throwback prices. GREAT Root Beer! And I'm a root beer connoisseur! Ate here for lunch today for the first time on the recommendation of a friend (and fellow root beer connoisseur). I was impressed. It was served in a frosty mug that was so cold it froze the root beer that dripped over the sides as she was filling it! The root beer had a delicious creaminess that you wouldn't normally find in a regular root beer. Even the inside of the glass had frozen the root beer creating another layer of cool insulation. Some nice frozen slivers of the dark liquid would float up and dance among the foam....aaaaaahhhh I had a cheeseburger and shared some chili-cheese fries. EVERYthing was good. They mixed up my order the first go-round but they were SO accommodating. They fixed my order promptly and from their behavior (sweet and apologetic); I'm thinking they didn't spit in it either (which I appreciate). The burger was grilled (not burnt) and the bun was toasted with butter (mmmmmm). I was hurting trying to finish the burger (and believe me I was trying), because I apparently pigged out on the chili-cheese fries as they were redoing my order. I'm not a big fry person, but I LOVE cheese, and it was a meaty chili, which I thoroughly enjoyed. Not sure if they have good fries or not, but smothered in American cheese slices and chili... yummy! A favorite spot of mine in big D! I try to visit whenever I'm in town. I grew up down the street and often my dad would take me here in the summer for a frosty root beer. The food isn't anything "exceptional", but it's very good. I would describe it best as old traditional. if you want your burger patties seasoned with chives and feta, go somewhere else. What is really exceptional is to see this place standing and unchanged for so long, especially considering the way that dallas likes to bulldoze it's history. If you are in the neighborhood and are in the mood for a good burger I would definitely stop by Dairy Ette. The place is low key in a small cafe (no more than 7 tables or so) that has probably been around since the 50s; holds a real retro charm. I tried the cheeseburger and added jalapenos to it with a side of onion rings. Everything was fresh and tasty. My favorite thing about this place is their root beer float. If you're not into anything on the menu, I would just order this because it made the experience. For two burgers w/ sides, two drinks, and a root beer float it ended up being a little over $20 which is a fair price. Overall I really enjoyed Dairy Ette but it is similar to neighboring Keller's Burgers, which is not very far away. Reason for only giving them 3-stars is because in my mind, it's a solid burger joint, however, I wouldn't go out of my way to come back for more. There are other burger places where I would drive 20+ mins for but this isn't one of them. Like I said, it's a great place, but only if you're in the neighborhood. The Dairy-ette is the complete antithesis of the new places popping up in the wake of the burger fad. I have to give it major props for sticking to its prices and menu since the very beginning. The place also looks a lot like what I think it looked like when it opened, too. I think they could use a small aesthetic makeover, especially in the parking lot. I ordered a cheeseburger sans onions, pickles, and spreads, as well as some fries. I was very pleased with the burger...it was substantial and had a good flavor to it. I did not care for the fries whatsoever...they were limp and soggy from the oil in which they were fried. Yuck! No free refills on soda is kind of a bummer, but I'll overlook that, since I didn't bother to get one. This place has got it almost perfect. Worth a visit if you're looking for a yummy burger without the hipster fad aura. read more

Sadly, upon further visits, I've found the Dairy-Ette to be less than spectacular. Sometimes the burgers just aren't juicy. The bun is less than spectacular. I think their bacon can be a big bonus - it's thick-cut and packs some extra flavor. Also, the one time I tried the homemade root beer, I found it a little lacking. Maybe I'm just used to the more carbonated kind like Barqs or A&W, because the Dairy-Ette root beer seemed kind of flat. I only went to grab a milkshake or ice cream so I don't feel I can comment on everything they have to offer. It's kind of a drive in so you can park and they will come to you. What do we do? Park, wait for them to come to us, and ask if we can go sit inside. They were about to close so our options were milkshake or root beer float. I went with a chocolate milkshake. After moving to the area five years ago, I've always wanted to try this place. I finally did recently, and, for once, a local legend lives up to the hype. The cheeseburgers are simple and really tasty. Patty was cooked and seasoned just right. Mustard is the standard here, but I had wayyyyyyyyyy too much on mine, so I know to ask for light mustard next time. If you don't like mustard, you need to specify to leave it off. Lots of onions which I loved!! The onion rings were pretty good, if not a bit bland. The superstar of the show is the homemade root beer in a frosty mug. Holy crap, is it good. They sell it by the gallon, so I plan to get some this summer when that Texas sun comes to really play. You can park under the red stripe awning in front where a car hop will come out to take your order or go inside to enjoy your food in an atmosphere unchanged by time. Yes, it is that good. I save this place for special treats because otherwise I would eat there daily and weight 500 lbs. But I would be a happy 500 lbs person. I decided to Yelp a restaurant for my birthday dinner and came upon the glowing reviews of this place. Now that I have had it, I can say that most of the reviews are spot on. Dairy-Ette is quite affordable. I paid around $14 for a double cheese with bacon, a strawberry malt, a fresh cut fry, and a large root beer. Not bad. I would say that they are less expensive than most of the other places in the neighborhood (Keller's and Flaming Burger on Garland). Although less expensive than its competitors, Dairy-Ette packs a powerful punch when it comes to taste. The strawberry malt was out of this world. I highly recommend it to anyone interested in trying something new on the menu, or anyone trying the place for the first time. The fries were delicious and fresh, and the burger was pretty good. Why not the five stars? Well, the homemade rootbeer was completely flat. It is probably naturally this way, but even so it tasted pretty bland. In addition, the burger, while tasty, offered two razor thin beef patties -- overcooked, mind you -- on a bun. Thin burgers seems to be a Texas thing, so in a way I cannot fault them for going with the trend. What I can say is that a real burger is big and can be cooked to order. You will not find that here. I will definitely eat here again -- but I won't be getting the world famous root beer anytime soon. read more

There's definitely a cool vibe to the place and not hard to imagine this is exactly how it looked 50 years ago. The drive up area is a little confusing as there are no buttons or speakers. We waited for a few minutes but weren't sure if someone would come or not, so just went inside. Glad we did as we got to experience the diner. Very tiny, yet quaint. Burgers are good but are very similar to Sonic's burgers. French fries are thin cut but seem a little flimsy rather than crisp. The Root beer is made on site and is very good. As you open the door, you step back in time. This place is a throwback and I mean that in the BEST of ways. The servers are extra friendly and make you feel like they have known you forever. We walked across the street from the car repair shop to grab lunch at there yet. Inside, it was like walking into another era. Think "1956 diner". But cheeseburgers have that wonderful crispy grill 'tang" on the buns and on the edges of the meat that you rarelyget in any Burger joint these days. The rootbeer was straight out of an old 50's rootbeer barrel dispenser and the mugs were nice and frosty. Service is courteous, prompt and friendly. This could be eliminated by toasting the buns longer and less mayo/mustard. It seems short staffed as certain times you will not get car hop service. For those wanting car hop service, they do not post a visible menu, which is odd, but for regulars who know the menu, this is not a problem. I always love dining here. I don't come often, but when I do I always leave satisfied. Our waitress was friendly and attentive and the food was hot and fresh. One day, me and my boyfriend were hungry for a great burger and decided to try out this place! When we got there, we decided to drive in, which I personally think is what makes this place so unique! Overall, this place can make some great burgers, awesome onion rings, and the best root beer ever!
