Heading back to old east Dallas from seeing friends in Rockwall, my wife and I decided to take a trip down memory lane. It had been twenty years since we had eaten at the Dairy-Ette and we were looking forward to a good old-fashion, cheap, greasy burger. Because Covid-19 has affected the operating hours of so many businesses, we called ahead (7:20 pm) to make sure they were open. We were informed that they would be open till 8:00. Perfect we said - we're 10 minutes away. We pulled in at 7:30 and noticed the building hadn't changed a bit. Still the same old shitty, dilapidated lean-to, crapping can that we remembered. We waited five minutes before a carhop approached us and asked if we were there to pick up a called-in order. We replied "no, we're just here to order burgers." She informed us that unless we had phoned-in an order ahead of time, they were no longer taking orders. I told her "I wish you had told me this when I called ten minutes ago!" The carhop paused, didn't say another word and simply turned and walked back inside. WTF? Why would a restaurant that doesn't close for twenty-five more minutes refuse to take our order??? So long Dairy-Ette. Next time we decide to take a trip down nostalgia road, we'll head over to Keller's. PS, go fuck yourself. read more

As the crew continues The Goat Mumblers Excellent Burger Adventure I introduced the rest of the guys to DairyEtte. This place is stuck in 1956, drive in, car hop, burger bliss. As an east side Dallas native I've known about this joint forever since they are across the street from my old high school. Back then I didn't fully appreciate the burgers as I was there for their famous root beer floats. But now as a burger aficionado, I have come to know and love this place as a regular lunch time fav. Nothing fancy here. No sweet potato fries, chili cheese nonsense, tofu burgers, etc. Just a soda fountain, a few small booths, friendly service and great burgers. The only thing missing is a juke box. And beer. Add those and they get 5 stars. It's a must try for burger geeks. read more

The only reason why this is not getting five stars is because the booths are really small. Chicken was delicious. My dad's burger was excellent. My sister's burger was commendable. The thirst quenching root beer was part of the top two root beers I have ever had. It was very delicious. read more

I was so disappointed yesterday July 9 2021 when I received my food. 2 Things immediately stuck out! The first was, they tried to not use a Frosty Mug for my Rootbeer Float which is a large reason I go here and then I get my Burger and fries and IMMEDIATELY noticed they were using Frozen French Fries instead of the Great FRESH French Fries they use to serve!! The burger even seemed to be different!! Not sure I will go back unless I find out that they have corrected their failures I experienced!! Those 2 items (No Frosty Mug and those horrible frozen ,dry, tasteless frozen french fries were enough for me to say Bye :( Hope y'all correct this and soon! If I find out you have I will return. Other people were agreeing with me yesterday at the car show,,so Bobby PLEASE fix this so we can continue to come. You had been great since 1956 why change your product ???? Mediocre, suggestively order the Patty melt. All of the homeade drinks are too sweet with no flavor just plain bland. Lemonade, limeade and their signature root beer! More like shitty root! Established in 1956, this family owned restaurant has everything from house made root beer in frosted mugs, malts & shakes, old fashioned burgers and fresh hand cut fries to name a few. I enjoy going to places that have stood the test of time. Usually they have good food at great prices. I can't say the same about this place. After the almost thirty dollars for me and my girlfriend to eat here I was expecting the food to be almost heavenly at that price. The fries were some of the worst I've eaten. They tasted like old potato with no kind of flavor. The burgers would have been great at three dollars, not at their prices. Way too much mustard. My girlfriend threw away the chilli cheese fries and I couldn't have agreed more. The one good thing I will say is the root beer was amazing! It is one of the two stars. The other is the customer service was good but the wait wasn't, especially for being the only car in the parking lot. I wouldn't tell a friend to eat here. read more

I live around the corner, and would love to love this place. The setup is classic, no-frills local drive in. But the food, even with appropriately scaled expectations, always comes up short. They make their own root beer, which is fantastic, but sadly I can't even say I'm a fan of the root beer. If you're not coming on classic car night, there are better options in the area for a burger. read more

I can't even come close to the reviewer who's been coming to the Dairy-ette since the 70's. My first visit was last weekend, but I was impressed with the burger, the hand-cut fries, the onion rings. Like home cooking only better! My friend enjoyed the rootbeer served in the frosty mug..."not too sweet, just right!" she grinned as she downed the final swallow. "Can't wait to come back for the rootbeer float!" We drove from Richardson and knew to bring cash...but we almost missed the place which was behind a Texaco station. Always up for a bit of nostalgia and a good burger, the five of us headed for the only vacant booth. The place isn't big; it's old...but the folks are nice and helpful and, yep, we'll drive back from RIchardson for that rootbeer float and another burger and onion rings...and, yum, those fries can't be beat. Remember, it's okay to just sit in your car and wait for curb service, too! 5 stars, hands down! There is a reason they were voted the best burger in town by the the Dallas Observer in 2011. It is a bit out of the way but worth it!! We chose to dine in our car as opposed to going in. The waitress was very nice. The burgers were delicious. Very old diner style so you should be prepared for a mess. The fries were yummy. We were too full to try a milkshake! They only take cash so be prepared. If they were closer to downtown, we'd probably eat here weekly. The 15 minute car ride saves our waistlines! Yummm! I read about this place on Yelp, and I knew I had to try it. I love funky retro places, and Dairy-Ette definitely fits the bill. We finally got around to trying Dairy-Ette after we were able to pick up a Groupon (I love me some Groupons...). We ate inside, because a) I hate eating in the car, and b) I was not going to miss out on soaking up the awesome 1950's vibe in this tiny joint (we're talking maybe 6 vinyl red and white booths, plus a small counter with swiveling stools). Hubs and I each had a cheeseburger. As others have stated, their burgers are reminiscent of Whataburger- only a bit fresher tasting, and I mean that in a loving way...because I love me some Whataburger. The veggie toppings were fresh and tasty, and the bun was wonderfully soft and buttery. It did not become soggy despite the fact that the burgers were delectably greasy. We shared an order of fries and order of rings. Neither of which were "best I've ever had", but both were very good. Fries are hand cut, and unseasoned, with a very "potato-ey" flavor. Rings are pretty conventional...maybe slightly greasier than I would prefer, but still tasty. The real winner here, however, was clearly the root beer! Served in a frosty glass mug, it was wonderfully creamy and refreshing. Service was fast and friendly. FYIs: Cash only. No free refills (except for coffee and ice tea). Located just behind the Texaco station...blink and you might miss it. Definitely worth a visit. If you want to do the drive-in thing with your kids, and Keller's is too crowded, go here instead. read more

The appeal is definitely in the vibe. A throwback from a bygone era, it's practically a trailer, complete with old school bar stools, rickety booths, and I think a stained AC repair company calendar on the wall. It's manned by teenagers who still have the metabolism to eat there without gaining a pound. On my first visit, I swooned over the homemade limeade served in a frosted glass. On a subsequent visit, the same drink in a styrofoam cup (I wasn't given a mug option) didn't stoke nearly the same glee. Keller's is normally my go-to for a greasy drive-in burger, but I knew I needed to check out the Ol' Dairy Ette. And I'm glad I did... After seeing this place for, oh, the last 35 years or so, I finally found myself driving past it while starving and craving a burger. Bingo! I pulled up under the awning, and a waitress appeared to take my order - just like Keller's. I figured the burgers were thing, so I got a double cheeseburger with tots and tea. After a few minutes, my food came on a door tray, complete with real glass salt and pepper shakers, and a fat bottle of ketchup. I knocked one star off for the lack of tablecloth and linen napkins, but everything else was pretty damned awesome. The burger was double-wrapped for my protection and set atop a generous pile of tots. Said burger was also a LOT bigger than I was expecting. Nonetheless, I soldiered on and managed to power through most of it while stuffing tater tots in my face here and there. The waitress checked on me a few times and refilled my tea for free. I definitely needed extra tea to successfully ward off the meat sweats. This is definitely one of the better burgers in DFW. My only mistake? Trying to eat this mess in my car. Next time I plan to dine inside so I can leave my pile of napkins in the trash. How does it compare to Keller's, you might ask? Well, the Dairy Ette burgers are way bigger, but I prefer the poppy-seed buns at Keller's. Dairy Ette has a dining room, but Keller's has cool cars and bikes in the parking lot. Dairy Ette has a more diverse menu, but Keller's has cold beer. It's kind of a wash, I guess. Looks like more research is warranted... read more
