Dat Dog is located on Frenchmen Street. We stopped in to get some time on their second floor balcony to get a look over all of Frenchmen and to grab a drink. Their drink prices were a little lower than some of the other live music bars on the street and they were pretty good too. I had a sweet and sugary blackberry mule that I enjoyed on the patio. Both my husband or I have never tried vegan hot dogs. This place however, was recommended to us by a friend, so we decided to give it a go. The ambience of this particular location was fun, like a cafe/bar like. It was pretty crowded when we entered, but we were able to get a booth to sit easily. We ordered the Spicy Chipotle Dog from their Vegetarian/Vegan section. Our order arrived in a few min and to our surprise it was really good. The bread had a nice crunch to it, the "hot dog" was perfectly seasoned. We went with some extra toppings of pickle, relish, jalapeños, pico de gallo, and some kind of cheese sauce. The drinks are WAY overpriced ($10 for a gin and tonic) and I was forced to watch the sad part of the Green Mile while I waited for my drink. The one thing I do love about this place is the location. We were fully prepared to hang out on the balcony for a while, people watch and see the parade. But once we saw how expensive the drinks are, we knew we couldn't stay long. Let me preface this by saying, I spent the better half of the day drinking around NOLA because of Mardi Gras and stopped by here at midnight to try to balance myself out before hitting up Bourbon Street. That being said, you can't really talk trash about a place that serves up unique hot dogs and has a full bar. I ordered a PBR and a shot for 6 people and the bill was a whopping $30, talk about a steal. I ordered a duck sausage with chef's toppings, which got snatched away from me after one bite by my girlfriend. I ended up eating her smoked bratwurst with chef's choice. You might want to rethink that. We went on a Tuesday evening at 7:45pm to get a hot dog and a side of cheese fries. The place was not busy at all, however the hot dogs we ordered came 35 min later ICED COLD. They might tasted good but they were COLD. We ate them but 35 min later, still no sign of our fries. Holy Crow the last time I saw that many fine specimens of dogs was at The Westminster Dog show! We were headed to Frenchman's street a true jewel in and of itself......... beats Bourbon street up and down the block! This is a semi local area where the beers are $5, great entertainment, and everything reasonably priced. I digress so we asked the concierge at the hotel, a policeman, the cab driver, and a security guard at a bar where to go on Frenchman's street for great food everyone said Dat Dog and man were they all right! We both got the alligator dog $8.50 and the tater tots covered with etouffee' oh Mylanta the tots I could eat for a year straight and hope to be encased within them when I die! We went upstairs and sat on the balcony and viewed all Frenchman's street had to offer and gazed upon the Star Wars Museum/Church/Mecca with sheer awe! The food came out fast, hot and delicious....oops did I steal that from a pizza box? To heck with it, everything was just that way. The atmosphere was NOLA adult Disneyland if you bring children that's on you. I don't go to Space Mountain so when in NOLA if I drink a little too much, get too loud, or an just obnoxious well I'm in NOLA. Dat dog is a really good place to eat not too expensive good food and great people. read more

The service is phenomenal and extremely fast and all the servers were very friendly and enjoying their time with us and whoever was in charge of the music was the best DJ. Somebody told me this was better than Ted's (a Buffalo, NY classic). I couldn't believe them. Then I went and, yea, sorry Ted's, but this is the bomb. I love that you have recommendations for those of us who cannot decide what we want to eat that day or how to pair food. But they also have a strong showing of different types of dogs and toppings that you can pair however you chose. Pay the base price for the dog (they have a crawfish version too, FYI), and you can have as many toppings as you want for free. Which is how you end up with a Vienna sausage covered in blue cheese and ketchup if you're me. I know, odd, but it actually really worked! I went during the day but as this particular one is located towards the end of Frenchman Street I could see it being hopping late into the night. Wanted to give this place 5 stars because the food, drinks and music in the place were great. Our party sat at two separate tables and ordered from the bar. One table's food arrived instantly, while my tables food took 45 minutes. Our other table had finished their meal and left and our food was yet to arrive. Dat Dog is a great late night eatery when you're out at Frenchmen's street and finishing up your night. The hot dogs here are unique, flavorful, and tastes great. I do think they are a bit pricey but it is in a great location and marketed towards tourists so I can understand the mark up. We ordered the duck hot dog with the blackberry sauce. It was what I saw on Yelp so I had to try it. I'm glad I did! It was very good and the sauce was also a nice addition to the dog. It also comes with bacon and mustard. I think the sauce would have been a little too sweet if it were not for the salty bacon and tangy mustard. So with everything together, it worked out great! We also ordered the crawfish fries. This was also good. The fries were a bit soggy though because of the sauce. I think if they fried it longer, it might have retained the crunchy texture. The crawfish sauce topped with cheese, tomatoes and sour cream was very good. I would have eaten that sauce by itself and it would have been great! Okay - after eating here I went into a food coma. It was probably a bad idea to go to Dat Dog after spending the evening bar-hopping on Bourbon Street. So, my eyes were larger than my stomach. You order in a line. They have a variety of sausages - all different types. You select the meat, select from dozens of toppings (too many to choose from), pay, and they call you when it's ready. I ordered a Hot Sausage with a few toppings and fries. They have a variety of toppings you can get on your fries, too, but I skipped them. It took about ten minutes for the five of us to have our order ready. I have to say the sausage was outstanding. It was spicy, crisp (I had it grilled), and juicy. The fries were also very good. Had I stopped there, it would have all been okay. But, no, I had to have more. So, I tried there Alligator sausage. No fries this time. And, that was good. It was a bad idea to order a second. If I had fries too, I probably would have exploded. The alligator sausage had a different texture - more coarse, a little less flavor, and was not as juicy. But in its own way it was also very good. So, after finishing the second sausage I felt full and ready to go. We all left, but that full feeling continued to grow. It was late, but it ended the night for me. This is a must try - in particular if you have ever been to Hot Doug's in Chicago. But, trust me, when you make your choice - eat it and stop. read more

This place really hit the spot after a long evening of drinking. First you get to choose which sausage you want as a base. They have about 6-7 varieties. A few that stood out were the smoked bratwurst, duck and crawfish sausage. Next you choose your toppings or if you're lazy like me, go with the chef's choice. I tried the smoked bratwurst with chef's choice. The sausage itself was tasty but I didn't enjoy all the toppings. Too much cheese and aioli sauce. The bun ends up too soggy from the sauces. I do recommend getting the duck sausage with chef's toppings. They top it with this sweet sauce that's pairs perfectly with the duck. Reminds me of Korean bbq or Hoi sin sauce. I actually ate here because my sister had visited months prior when she was in town, and she wrote a raving Yelp review. She'd been telling me about how wonderful the food and decor was (she's a HUGE "Star Wars" fan) and I was inspired to see it for myself. My boyfriend and I happened to walk by while exploring Frenchmen Street during our visit this past February. We walked into this colorful building and up the stairs to the second story where all of the "Star Wars"-themed displays were, and we were glad to learn that we'd be able to order our food up there as well. I chose a crawfish étouffée hot dog, because New Orleans, and our food came out within a few minutes. We gladly grabbed it and found ourselves a nice little table on the outdoor balcony overlooking Frenchmen Street where a brass band had begun playing on the corner. All of the tables up on the balcony were colorful and it really felt like Frenchmen Street was warmly welcoming us on the first night of our visit. It's been over a month since I ate this hot dog, and I still remember it vividly. It was incredible and unique, and the mustard on top was the absolute perfect topping. A++++. Seriously. Add in the live music outside and the lively people on the street, and we had the best first night experience possible, all thanks to the location and food at Dat Dog! read more
