Every single time I'm admitted into the hospital I get my bagels from here. By the far the biggest, best tasting and thickest bagels I've ever had. I usually go for a grilled cheese bagel or a bacon egg and cheese bagel. These bad boys barely fit in your mouth, that's how big they are. The outside had a firm crunchiness to it, while the inside was moist, fresh, and airy. I don't know which David's came first, but I don't think I'd ever tried this location out til the 14th st shop was forced to close because the landlord didn't want them competing with the hot and crusty (barf). In any case, this place carries on the same great tradition of Thai-made bagels. I see a lot of familiar faces from 14th street here as well too. The service is always fast and friendly. They charge 10c for toasting, but I never bother because they usually so fresh out of the oven it isn't necessary. I don't think real NYer's are supposed to toast a bagel anyway. David's is almost as good as my other favorite bagel place, Terrace Bagels. Their bagels are almost as good and the deli sandwich and bakery options are a bit more limited, but where they excel is on the grill. The bacon and egg sandwich is perfection. Add cheese if you're hungover. The bacon strips are thick, not too fatty, and never limp. This fact also elevates them above their nearby competitor Ess-A-Bagel. This is the quintessential great nyc local bagel place. A family owned and operated store serving classic NYC bagels. These guys are efficient and meticulous. With as many customers as they serve they still manage to always know how I like my coffee and I really don't get breakfast here too frequently, though not for a lack of wanting. My favorite bagel place in the city! I used to live an avenue away and would rely on this place for my morning hangover breakfast (at lunchtime). This place is not a fancy bagel place, it's a hole in the wall dump. But the bagels are AMAZING. They are huge, fluffy yet chewy - just the way a bagel should be. Since moving out of this neighborhood to Hoboken, I miss my lox and bagel fix and haven't had a decent bagel in Hoboken yet. Feel sorry for me, please. I've been going to David's Bagel for over ten years, ever since they were located on 1st Ave., between 13th St. and 14th St. Two location changes later, I still got to David's Bagels even though there are two bakeries between my apartment and their current locations. Every Saturday and Sunday, I pick up either a Toasted Garlic with Veggie Cream Cheese or an Egg and Cheese on a Toasted Everything Bagel if I'm hungover. On occasion, I will order a Toasted Cinnamon Raisin with Cinnamon Raisin cream cheese (is that too matchy matchy?). During the weekday they have a bagel, juice or coffee special. I usually get a can of Diet Coke as I have a coke problem and they keep the cans super cold, just like the ladies in my life. The staff that take your order are not the friendliest, but they're efficient. They've only messed up my order once over the last ten years (that young chubby guy said I made the mistake! I've order the same way for the past decade a-hole!) On the weekend, the place is usually pretty busy. It seems to be the go-to spot for the "morning after scene". Buy your one night stand a bagel then send them on their way. This crowd is mixed with some elderly people and young family, a great venue for people watching/judging. My go-to spot for bagels on weekends. The place is run by what I'm assuming is a family of Thai immigrants, and boy do they make some good bagels (and Thai Iced tea). They're also super efficient, and while you might run into the occasional line, you'll never have to wait long. I highly prefer these to Bagel Boss next door, simply because the staff behind the counter at Bagel Boss have the worst attitudes. Ess-a-Bagel is pretty much the same, with comparable bagels, but unbelievably snarky servers. Anyways, the bagels at David's are just the right amount of chew and crustiness, even if you don't happen to get them super-duper fresh. However, if you do manage to get them when they're freshly made, you cannot go wrong. I usually go with a whole wheat everything bagel with sun-dried tomato cream cheese, or lox if I'm feeling frisky. However, they have a ton of other cream cheese flavors to choose from, so you can't go wrong. Overall, David's is definitely the perfect place for your morning carb load. read more

9:30 am Sat morning, I decided to go on a bagel study in gramercy area. I hit 4 bagel shops that are within 4 blocks to each other and got plain bagels from 4 bagel shops: all the 4 charged $1 for the plain bagels and all the bagels were warm at the time of the purchase. I focused on texture ( crust , moist, softness, chewiness , & etc) and taste only, not service or if they give cookies to a kid... kind of stuff.. 1. Pick a bagel - it has fine crust, but the flavor is on a bland side or slightly off. Also the bagel is dense so once it is cold, it is almost unchewable unless toast it. - 3 out of 5 2. Gramercy Bagel - This is more of bagel-shaped bread than bagel. It has no crust that makes a bagel. It has more sugar than most bagel, so it does taste good if you like sweet bread like me. Also the dough has more water than traditional bagel, so it is more moist. Once it gets cold, its texture and taste almost resembles to Portuguese sweet bread than bagel. - 3 out of 5 3. Ess-A Bagel - It has perfect crust, the bottom part has crunchy thick crust . So when you eat it warm, it is almost nutty. The taste of bagel is very earthy. It either has no sugar or very little. So you taste more of the grain rather additives. It also has nice yeasty flavor that good bread has. 5 out of 5 4 David's Bagel - this bagel is somewhere between Gramery and Ess-A. Dough is on sweet side, and crust is much thinner than Ess-A-Bagel, but due to the sugar it has more caramelization on the crust. Overall it is bit nutty, moist and good thin crust. Way better than Bagel Boss next door. David's Bagels are chewy and doughy, so toast them for a crunchy exterior. I like to slather those toasted dough babies (whole wheat everything) with their tofu sun dried tomato cream cheese - my favorite! The sun dried tomatoes are meaty, not chopped up into itty bitty pieces, so you get a flavorful textural component within the cream cheese itself. The cream cheese to bagel ratio is also more proportional than other places. Everything is quick & efficient, and a small coffee is only $1. There are also lots of room to sit down and enjoy your bagel next to the window, and take a minute for yourself in the middle of a busy morning. Lastly, I would advise double checking your order before you head out the door, though, because 1 employee there ALWAYS gets my order wrong (I ordered a whole wheat everything bagel & got a wheat bagel instead, another time got the wrong cream cheese, etc). He has facial hair & an earring, if that helps. They are quick to apologize and correct my order. Otherwise everyone else is very friendly and hasn't gotten my order wrong. I could not figure out what I wanted for lunch last week, so I wandered around for a while until I came to David's Bagels. I looked at it and said . . . I could go for a bagel, which is exactly what I did. The place is nothing to look at on the inside (or as another reviewer stated, it certainly is a "hole in the wall"), as most bagel shops are not. They have a handful (perhaps five or six), of booths, so you can get sit there and enjoy it if you like, if you have no where better to go. But I approached the counter hoping the bagels would be enjoyable. I ordered a garlic bagel -- which is my personal staple when walking into a bagel shop -- and got it with veggie cream cheese, onion and lox. I took it back to the office and was happy from the first bite to the last. And for how much a bagel and lox goes for at other places, this place was reasonable at about $6. They also offer the usual coffee and tea and other drinks, as well as flat bagel and bialy's. And although it is a negligable price to pay, they charged an extra $.10 for toasting the bagel, and (I don't recall specifically), but they nickel-and-dime you for one or two other things in there as well -- thus giving them four rather than five stars. read more

I'm on the hunt for the perfect neighborhood bagel. Spoiler alert: David's doesn't have it, but they do come pretty close (especially for the area). My test is two pronged: first, I order a bacon egg and cheese on an everything because bacon can partially redeem even the saddest of bagels. Next, I return for a bagel with cream cheese to ensure the product can stand alone. If both are up to par and I would return again, I deem the establishment a Good Neighborhood Bagel Place™. I would give David's BEC a hearty thumbs up and am eager to return for the second portion of the test. The everything bagel was appropriately fluffy and well-seasoned and the bacon enjoyably crispy. It's not often I write reviews on Yelp. However, I am making an exception for David's. To say that I'm obsessed with this place would be an understatement. I eat very healthy but there two foods I will always make an exception for- pizza and bagels. I grew up in New Jersey eating ridiculously good bagels but when I moved to New York, nothing quite compared. I tried all the famous bagel shops like Murray's and Ess-A but none of these made my bagel lover heart sing. When I moved to the East Village about 4 years ago, I discovered David's. I was instantly a convert. Let me count the ways how much I love this place: 1) Good crust on the bagel but chewy and warm on the inside 2) They don't skimp on the cream cheese 3) If you order a breakfast sandwich (it's the best hangover cure), they make the bacon really crispy which is glorious. I hate when it's all fatty and limp. 3) Their whole wheat bagel is not sweet or dry what-so-ever- many of the other places use honey in their whole wheat bagel or they are devastatingly dry. Not at David's. 4) Insanely nice staff- I was walking down the street with friends one day and a guy waves at me. My friends ask me who it is and I tell them that it's my bagel delivery guy. 5) These bagels are so good, I've actually flown them cross country to give to friends. You can't go wrong with an everything bagel, flat or not. The BLTs are beautiful. Bagels, obviously, made fresh everyday. Just having a buttered bagel is enough to declare this place awesome. Not much seating I'm afraid and it's even less if you decide to go there at lunch time on a weekday. This place is a hot spot for the kids from the local schools. These guys aren't cheap with their portions either! You can't open your mouth wide enough to fit their constructed goodness without squeezing the sandwich bagel. Mountainous, I tell you. Love bagels? Then I walked down to the L train and waited at the platform for the train to come. Across the platform on the 8th Ave side there is this old man with some kind of crown on and he is singing very loudly.
