Bagel nirvana. I hail from bagel no-man's-land, and arrived in New York firmly convinced that bagels were disgusting, inedible horrors, with teeth-breaking exteriors and dense, tasteless innards. Either that, or they were mealy, sweetish, shelf-stable Sara Lee things. Watch me shudder. I'm eternally grateful to David's for showing me the light. Their everything bagels are savory, crackly, chewy, and just all around delicious. Worth every carb-laden bite. This is a great meal for under $5. Yes this how bagel should taste. Right texture on the outside, right chew on the inside. Small to no lines. No fake goodfellas attitude like Ess-a-Bagel. Also the bagel with lox is 2 dollar less and the guy actually put just a tiny schmear like I asked him to. I got bagels from both Ess-a-Bagel and David's at almost the same time and the experience with the counter folks and the quality of bagels was better at David's. If I were allowed to give David's Bagels six stars, I would. I visited the Upper East Side location on a trip to NYC before I moved here and fell in love with the bagels. Later I ended up living just two avenues from this location in the East Village and would get breakfast there almost every day. David's bagels are huge and heavenly. The outside is nice and crusty, the inside chewy. If you can get one when it's fresh out of the oven, you are in luck, but they'll toast it for you if it's no longer warm. They don't skimp on the cream cheese, which makes me so happy - I sometimes have to ask for extra elsewhere. I even got hooked on their vegetable tofu cream cheese, a nice healthy option. Being a regular, I came to recognize lots of other regulars - this place sure has its devotees. I think this place has a bit of a cult status. Even celebrities come here; I have seen Rosario Dawson and Robin Tunney waiting on line for bagels with the rest of us. So very sad that I've moved and don't have a David's near my apartment anymore. read more

Mmm. If only you didn't run out of the bagel I wanted... I went here when I lived in Stuy town to get my bagels. I always get a raisin bagel with ham and cream cheese (don't knock it till you try it). So good! I always go to Tompkins, but then I discovered David's. I live on 10th and I can walk to David's, get my bagel, walk home and then eat it faster than if I went to Tompkins which is 200 ft from my door. The bagels are just as good, they actually take credit card, and the bacon is crispier. Why not go here? read more

I love the bagels from David's Bagels. They're thick, chewy, and never tough. The sesame bagels are my favorite. I also love that the place has vegan spread to go on my bagels. The only downside to David's Bagels is the smell of Lox, which I can't stomach. I always carry out my bagels. read more

I like David's bagels, they make good breakfast bagel sandwiches, BUT, they screw up my order every time! And the mistakes are different every time. They simply don't listen. The best bagels in the East Village! I could (and do) eat here almost every morning when in Manhattan. The garlic bagel is not as over-powering as one might imagine - the taste will eventually subside as the day progresses. I typically go for the plain bagel with cream cheese because, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. Their iced coffee is also unreasonably good. I always see people walking in with Starbucks cups, and I think "what a waste" because the coffee and Thai iced tea here is legit. They also have a nice selection of juices/sodas (including Nantucket Nectars, yum!) if you're not a coffee person. Sure, the atmosphere is nothing fancy, but if you want regal, you're probably in the wrong part of Manhattan. Prices are also great - an entire breakfast for under $10. My lord. I heart breakfast sandwiches, particularly the ones that cost $3.45 accompanied with Tropicana orange juice and a small coffee. And it didn't taste like a Dunkin Donuts egg and cheese either. This is the definition of a New York bagel. Huge, perfectly chewy in all the right places, and a nice crust made for a good spread or egg sandwich. The offerings to pair with your bagel are endless including a plethora of the cream cheeses (even tofu!), sides, and salads. Unlike its nearby brethren in the area (Notably Ess-A-Bagel and Bagel Boss) the line here moves fast, the staff is courteous and the bagels live up to their reputation. After running the gauntlet of New York City bagels, this is remains my go to spot for a bagel nearly every week and I couldn't be happier. read more

I used to go to David's all the time when I lived in the East Village. It used to be on the corner of 14th street and 1st Ave, but has since relocated up a couple blocks (I think it had something to do with the Hot and Crusty that moved in next door, you can't see but I'm scowling). I grew up on Long Island and like to think I know a thing or three about bagels. For me David's is the Dopest in the five boroughs. Bagels are fresh all day, so they'll be warm. I think the best test of any bagel is one simply with butter. Try a sesame with butter, right from the oven, unbelievable. Of course my favorite is everything with cream cheese, so try that too. If your in the mood for an egg sandwich, that's also good here. Finally, I've found that the staff is really cool. Haven't been in a while, I gotta get going. read more

Holy cow - as a Long Islander I know a good bacon, egg and cheese on a whole wheat everything bagel and this seriously tops all that I've had. The bagel was so fresh and doughy - a perfect weekend morning pick-me-up. Come earlier to avoid the slow line, as it tends to get crowded with hungover, hangry customers in the mid-morning on weekends. Only reason I'm not giving five stars is because they put regular bacon instead of turkey bacon (yes they offer turkey bacon, yum!) on my sandwich, knew they messed up, and proceeded to give it to me anyway when I reluctantly said that's fine. I suppose it isn't entirely fair that I'm reviewing this place so soon after I've dined at Ess-a-Bagel. I'll try to keep that experienced blocked out while I write this though... There was only a couple people in here when I decided to stop...only one person before me in line. That being said though, it took them several minutes to take notice of me and even then, none of the guys asked to take my order. By the time they did, I was sort of irritated and decided to grab a pre-wrapped muffin rather than waiting for a bagel. I'm glad I did, because my cranberry-orange muffin was sooo yummy! It wasn't the biggest or best I've had, but it certainly was fresh and well preserved in its plastic-wrap cocoon. I also had a chocolate crumb cake later on, also very fresh and RICH! Definitely cured any chocolate cravings I had...though they could lighten up a bit on the streusel topping, it was almost as thick as the cake itself! read more

Oh Em Gee. I didn't think I liked bagels before I came to David's and now I don't think I can live without them. Simply divine. Ugh. How can a circle of dough be SOOO good? I don't get it and I am perfectly okay with that. As long as I can continue to ingest these delicious circles. We split a bacon egg and cheese on an everything bagel and a cinnamon raisin bagel with strawberry cream cheese. The bagels are soft and doughy on the inside with a slight crispy shell. I usually like to douse my breakfast sammies with ketchup but this one was not necessary at all. I was perfectly content with eating it as is. The strawberry cream cheese is fluffy and not heavy with chunks of strawberries mixed in. I can't WAIT to go back. When I've had a crappy date the night before or I'm in the mood to add some padding to my butt, I'll get a "bacon, egg and cheddar on a toasted everything bagel" sandwich. After being away for the holidays, the first bite of that succulent, artery-clogging sandwich welcomed me back to the city and made me forget how crappy 2008 was. Truly one of the best bagel shops in the city, a 15-person line will certainly greet you if you come on a weekend morning. But it's definitely well worth it. Everyone likes their bagels a certain way--mine being toasted. The pure delicacy of it, however, is when the bagel is chewy and warm on the inside. It's such a shame that 14th St location closed, due to its rumored battle with a certain "hot and crusty" bakery next door. But I'd gladly walk up another five blocks for a real bagel. read more

I lived down the block for a couple years. Three star because I reserve a large gap for Ess'a'Bagel, which is, thank you Serena, "just down the block" (12 blocks). Twelve blocks, after dancing on a roof for 5 hours, or even when waking up early to hit Crunch, is reeeeaaaaly out of the way. EV dwellers appreciate the location, better than average NYC bagels.. but be warned- this place is plucked right from China Town, and is more dingy than a south of Canal seafood restaurant with no sign. During a week in NYC, I consumed a lot of bagels, and this was my favorite. Loved my lox, chive cream cheese, and tomato on whole wheat. Perfect outside and chewy inside, nice and warm since they toast. I think it's a little silly they charge for little sandwich toppings like tomato, but I guess that's the norm. Still a little cheaper than Ess-a-bagel. Short line and room to sit down on a late Saturday morn was a plus. Would go here every weekend if I lived in NYC. read more

LOL For my favorite bagel place it's tied between David's and Ess-A but I'm giving it to David for now since I've only been to Ess-A once and I've been coming to David's for 3 years and it's always fresh and delicious. The difference is that Ess-A-Bagel is more crispy on the outside and chewy on the inside while David's is chewy all around and softer. I think I always get the everything bagel when I'm here... And I honestly don't know the difference between good cream cheese and bad cream cheese - I love the lox spread, chive, and veggie. Also for sweet cream cheese the walnut raisin is so good. This place runs very efficiently so don't be intimidated by the long line. Bagels here are your New York staple. Fluffy, large, and best served untoasted. I always mean to try their wide variety of cream cheeses that they offer but I always end up falling back to my breakfast favorite: sausage, egg, and cheese. It's just my favorite breakfast sandwich. Their cream cheeses are great though, whenever I venture out and try them, as is their lox. $5 Credit Card minimum. Limited seating area but that's never a problem because most of the people just buy it and go. The only reason I want Ess-A-Bagel to open up their new location up the street is because I want the lines here at David's to go down. read more

Customer service wasn't too great but who cares? These bagels were BOMB! I tried a whole wheat everything with lite veggie cream cheese and lox and devoured the whole thing hehe. I was expecting some delicious freshly baked bagels, but it really was nothing special. I had a bagel lox with light chive cream cheese on a toasted garlic bagel. I went to David's on a Sunday morning for breakfast to naturally find a line. I thought that the line would go by fairly fast, but it still took a little time to get to the cash register to pay at the end. I was probably in like for about 20 minutes even though the line didn't look very long at all. The bagel itself was just alright, and tasted like any other bagel at some generic shop. For the long line that I waited, I was pretty disappointed. There was also just way too much cream cheese on the bagel, overwhelming all the other flavors and making it taste way too salty. The salmon did look and taste fairly fresh though. They charge you extra to have the bagel toasted, but I didn't think that they toasted it enough because it still tasted a little doughey in my opinion. The sandwich was very filling though, and I couldn't even finish it even though I wiped a lot of the cream cheese off. I think you can definitely find better bagels in NYC. Another negative aspect to David's Bagels is the service. The cashier isn't very friendly and behaves as if she just wants you to pay and get out of her way as fast as possible. read more

Best bagels in the area. I've tried everything nearby and these are by far the best! Don't be discouraged if there's a line, it moves fast! Also, the service is always quick and friendly. They especially come out on top with their bagel-egg sandwiches as compared to near-by Ess-a-Bagel. I've seen some reviews mention that this place is dirty, however, I have to completely disagree. This is the best bagel place in the East Village! The staff is incredibly fast, they give you heaping helpings of that ever you order, and they've mastered the whole wheat bagel. The line may put you off (especially on the weekends) but you'll cruise from the front door to the cashier in about 15-20 minutes.
