My friend and I ordered door dash from here Sunday late morning time for brunch. Food came at a reasonable time and had pretty good portions for the orders. My favorite was their siu mai, turnip cake and corn dumpling. Those were all so flavorful and delicious. The chive and shrimp dumplings unfortunately were not that good. Flavor was ok but the skins were too thick and oily. We also ordered the wonton noodle soups. The broth was light and nice and the wontons were good but they did skimp on the amount of wontons they put in. The noodle quality was average to below average though but the Shanghai bok Choy on the side was a good addition. All in all, a nice simple choice if you're craving some dim sum. read more

I've been visiting Dim Sum Bistro for a light snack the past two days and I am seriously impressed. First, I tried the 69. Scallion Pan Cake (~6 pieces for $4.25) which took about 10-15 minutes, as it was made to order. It was hot, flakey, and had great flavor! The next day, I ordered har gow, or 22. Steamed Shrimp & Chive Dumplings ($3.70) which came with 3 dumplings. They were already made, so no wait. The har gow was sooo tasty and I devoured it quickly. After 36hrs exploring China town, I can 100% confirm this is the BEST dim sum. Great selection and you know it's legit cause all the other Chinese gather here. It's super fresh and the staff are so sweet. It's a tiny little spot, no sitting area. In my opinion that makes it better cause it truly is a hole in the wall. My husband and I love a good dim sum spot and Dim Sum Bistro is definitely one of our favorites in Chinatown. Whenever the craving kicks in, this is usually our our go-to place as the dim sum is tasty, affordable, and quick. Also, because of its location, we tend to get lucky with parking when we visit, unlike some of the other places within Chinatown. Dim Sum Bistro is a quick service type of establishment where patrons place their order and take it to go. There are no seats inside or outside the spot to eat directly on site. Customers have two options for placing and paying for their orders: 1) at an electronic kiosk and 2) at the register with a person. I've used both methods and have never had an issue with my order. Service is always professional and efficient. My husband nor I have personally had an extremely long wait time for our food, despite having several other patrons placing orders. Perhaps, we've been lucky? Dim Sum Bistro, similarly to Good Mong Kok Bakery (another local favorite dim sum spot), is very much one of those typical "hole in the wall" asian restaurant in the US. So, on what occasion would you find yourself at Dim Sum Bistro? Well, you want affordable food and you could care less about service. To further elaborate, the restaurant is not a sit down restaurant. The interior is small so when a line forms (in which it almost always does) the restaurant feels crowded. While the line to take your order proceeds quickly, there is another line of people patiently standing by till their order is called. The food itself is alright, taking into consideration how cheap the food is. While you do have staple items like Shrimp and Pork Siu Mai, Turnip Cake with Pork, Preserved Egg w/ Pork Porridge, (+a separate order of) Chinese Fried Donut, you do also occasionally find yourself ordering foods that you are better off not ordering. All the Rice Noodle Roll items we ordered: Shrimp, Pork, and Beef were disappointing. The ratio of the rice roll to stuffing was just off - mainly the noodle rolls were weirdly thick and there was little actual filling inside. Perhaps to save on extra costs. On top of the above mentioned items, I also ordered their Pan Fried Shrimp and Chive Dumplings which were alright and a couple other items like their Pan Fried Shrimp Cutlets and Deep Fried Sesame Ball, which were completely missed. Not sure why they gave us Rice Cake instead but by the time we were back home with food, it did not make sense to go back just to correct the order. While it might make sense to order food to go from Dim Sum Bistro for convenient, cheap food, I do not think it is worth it to wait in line for an extended period. The establishment is again small and there is no area to sit and wait for your food, whether that be inside or outside. Some of my favorites include their bbq pork buns - pillowy, white steamed bun enveloping a sweet, savory fatty pork filling. Their fried sesame balls are always fresh, with sweet bean filling that's somehow still piping hot at the end of your meal with the crispiest sesame exterior. My absolute favorite is Dim Sum Bistro's siu mai, which rivals that of southern China's, the literal birthplace of dim sum. These pork and shrimp open faced dumplings are larger than your typical siu mai, meaty and stuffed with juicy, tender filling. The price is also right - I've found their dim sum to be about the same or cheaper than several other spots nearby. I recommend ordering a selection of their dim sum and walking a few blocks north to picnic at Washington Square. We were staying in the area and decide to get a cheap and wonderful lunch at Dim Sum Bistro. I can only speak to what we got which was custard balls and these wonderful dim sum cups. They had hot broth and the bottom of the cup and was perfect for an on the go or park lunch situation like we enjoyed. The wait for the dim sum was quite long. I have no idea what goes into making dim sum but my custard balls took like 2 minutes while the dim sum took 15. Well worth it. I think we got very lucky and beat the crowd. read more

My quest to visit, rate and review every single dim sum takeout restaurant in San Francisco's Chinatown neighborhood continues here with Dim Sum Bistro. Located in a prime location along Broadway in San Francisco Dim Sum Bistro is exactly as advertised, affordable with quite the vast menu, service-wise they are fast and bilingual, and they are takeout only, as uniquely they have both touchpad kiosk ordering and order from their associate right at their counter. Walk along Broadway and you can't miss them with their reddish yet fading awning outside and windows with a ton of stickers in Chinese characters posted along them. But one cannot judge a book by its cover, as I found a recent takeout experience surprisingly enjoyable and easy as it all started with their menu, as it literally was one of the biggest menus that I have ever seen in a Chinatown takeout restaurant. There are literally sixty-nine items on their menu, and I only know that because they number them, which is great for those who do not speak Cantonese and all you have to say is the number of the corresponding menu item that you want to order. What is also great with the menu at Dim Sum Bistro is that they have two menus actually, one with all of their dim sum menu items listed behind their counter, and one on the opposite wall with pictures of those same menu items listed. With this best of both worlds, I was ready to order my lunchtime meal. Whenever I try a takeout dim sum restaurant, I make sure to order their Har Gow, or shrimp dumplings, which here is menu item number 16. Although I traditionally order their Pork Siu Mai to accompany this item, this time I went with their Steamed Beef Siu Mai, which was menu item number 19, and for good measure to complete my lunch order I went with two individual orders of their Baked BBQ Pork Buns. My total bill was $12.40, which in today's day and age is really reasonable. The good news is that they do take credit cards and with all of the ways customers can order here, it seems like a seamless and safe process paying by card. Of course I tend to pay by cash at places like this to be on the safe side, and it took less than five minutes for me to receive my order. I did notice someone who came in before me order a meal that was cooked to order and they were told it would take ten minutes for their order to be ready and I saw them walking out right after I did, so their kitchen staff seems to be super fast, even though yet again their menu is quite helpful as some items have yellow stickers on the corner of their pictures stating they would take 10 or 15 minutes to prepare, which is helpful for those on the run. Upon my return back to work, I dove into my Har Gow and Beef Siu Mai one at a time, and although I thought the Har Gow dumplings were quite good, as they weren't too gummy or over-cooked. The Beef Mai weren't as flavorful and were quite gummy, and I instantly regretted not getting their more traditional Pork Siu Mai. But the real star of my lunchtime had to have been their Baked BBQ Pork Buns as they were filled with a ton of BBQ Pork, and cooked perfectly with just the right amount of sweetness combined with savoriness. I cannot wait to come back to Dim Sum Bistro some of their cooked to order dishes like their Beef Stew Wonton Rice Vermicelli Soup or their Steamed Pork Ribs with Rice, as none of their dishes are over 10 dollars, which again is nothing short of remarkable in this day and age. My spot for dimsum takeout is closed for vacation so had to make a trip out to Chinatown. Ordered at the register and was surprised to find out I could have ordered online. Everything was clear with an extra large point of sale display and the prices are fine. Chinatown is a busy place, but not as busy as before. On a Thursday, was able to find a parking spot a few minutes walk away. They take card, but the food is takeout only. No dine in. Next time I'll have to try the online ordering. ETA - went again on a Friday. Tried the online ordering, and unfortunately the restaurant was slammed with orders. Was hoping my order would be ready having ordered and already paid ahead of time. I had arrived in 30mins, and called to check if my order was ready. A lady who didn't speak much English said 'order ready'. So I set my parking meter for 5mins since it should have been a simple matter of picking it up. Lots of in person and kiosk orders were being tended to. Uber Eats and DoorDash orders were getting priority and flying out the door. After 15mins and remotely extending the parking meter, I finally got someone's attention and they said my order would take 20mins to fill. I was astonished as it had already been 45mins since my order went through and the lady on the phone confirmed it was ready for pick up. I asked if they could just give me something cold that didn't need heating instead, so it would be ready right away. They filled most of my order, then gave me a random assortment of dimsum to compensate for the item that would take 20mins. Not a happy compromise as I had a travel deadline, and going to this restaurant was already out of the way, so I agreed. Thought I found another favorite spot that I would always go to, and I might give them another chance when the need arises. But the hassle of just being in Chinatown was already a bit much. Maybe I was really hangry and stressed about impending traffic doom, but 45mins -1hr to fill a paid order is way too slow. They didn't even see my ticket until I told them several times I had an online order. To be positive and offer some constructive criticism, this restaurant has good food at a standard price and is hardworking and nice. But they could definitely focus on streamlining. One way I noticed is by having the utensil and condiment packet already prepared instead of doing it for each order. Lastly this may be obvious, but if you're in a rush on a Friday, try a DoorDash or Uber Eats. It might be worth the extra charge to enjoy these good eats stress free. read more

Really appreciate the convenience from ordering on the kiosk, complete with pictures. There doesn't seem to be a dine in option, in case that was your plan. Everything was fresh and came out piping hot! The chicken sticky rice and BBQ pork buns were massive like everything else. Their Chinese donut was light and crispy, but I cant say the same for the deep fried pork puff (too greasy!). I had my go to spots but for some reason this was not one of them. I got some inside information about this one. I got the BBQ pork bun, fried beef ball, sticky rice ball and custard bun. The first thing you need to know is I've had a lot of BBQ pork buns, More than any other dim sum item by a mile. As far as I am concerned that should be everyone's go to. A BBQ pork bun is a masterclass of properly prepared swine and a beautiful sweet roll. This is where the two worlds collide between bakery and meat. If executed correctly it is divine. I've had several elite level Pork Buns and this one holds claim as #1. In sheer size and flavor this one gets it done. It's number 1 defining characteristic is how tender the pork is. I have no problem calling this the best BBQ pork bun in China town. Don't I look like an expert on pork buns? The fried beef ball was pretty standard to the others I've had. The sticky rice ball was interesting. It was like a fried rice dumpling. What's not to like about that? Custard bun was satisfactory.
