If you haven't already heard, Dowon Chinese Restaurant is where it's at for your jjajangmyun, jjambong, and tangsuyuk needs. I came here with an empty stomach on a Friday night with about 5 or 6 other people, and were quickly seated in a private room by two very welcoming Korean waitresses. We all given menus, cups of iced water, and two kettles of hot tea to start off our meal. While ordering from the trilingual (English, Korean, Chinese) menu may prove to be a challenge for most, we were able to place our order with the patient and helpful waitresses, who were happy to assist us in ordering for 6 indecisive and hungry college students. Our entrees were accompanied with kimchi, onion, and picked radish. The entrees came out quickly, and the portions were MASSIVE! The food was delicious, to say the least. For newcomers, I highly recommend trying the jjajangmyun, spicy shrimp, and tangsuyuk, and fried tofu! These were some of my personal favorites. Our bellies were full by the time the third or fourth dish came out. We had trouble finishing our food, but were able to score some take-out boxes from the friendly waitresses. While I wouldn't usually take my fraternity brothers out to eat ethnic foods, I was glad to be able to take them here. It was well-received, and I got the props for picking a sweet spot for dinner. Stop by if you're willing to experience quality Korean cuisine, without having to worry about sub-par service, unsanitary conditions, and rude employees. You won't be disappointed. I heard that the chef from An Dong quit and opened up his own restaurant so I had to come check it out! The restaurant is located behind Ichiriki (diagonally across from Payless Ala Moana), it is on the parking lot side, not by the road facing piikoi st. Parking at night and on weekends is $1 per hour but during the day is free. Although the location is kind of hidden and the parking is very limited, I loved this place! The food taste the same as An Dong but the size portion of sweet & sour pork is at least twice of the portion from An Dong. The service is much better, the ladies that work here are very friendly and attentive of the tables. I got the seafood black bean noodles and the sweet and sour pork. My boyfriend got the fried rice with black bean sauce. Everything was very delicious! The only thing that I noticed is that the kitchen is located closely by the tables so you could hear plates clicking and such but I didn't mind. read more

Having a service animal finding a restaurant where we are comfortable is very difficult. I try not to go to too many korean places as we have more difficulty. However, being korean and loving the food I can't stop. Despite my fears I decided to check out this place with my friend. As soon as I walked in the server greeted me and I said a table for two. Everything was going well until she noticed my service animal. She looked at me blank faced smiled and walked away. She came back and looked at me questioning. I stated he was a service animal she laughed hesitantly and put us in the side room. I was a little hurt but it was more privacy and I did not mind. It took our server forever to come take our order. Luckily the food was DELICIOUS. Unfortunately though one of our dishes the meat was over-fried. The color was definitely a dark color and it was obvious. Our server didn't even come back once to ask us about our food or check on us. Besides that one dish the rest of our food was amazing. The general population is divided into two: half who order jajangmyun (black bean noodles) and the other half who order jampong (spicy seafood noodles). The most ideal situation is having two people, one from each side sharing a meal together. Then hopefully, the other will be down for sharing and both of you win. Because remember, sharing is caring. This is the new place to go for that. Rumor has it that the chef from On Dong came here. Unable to confirm that rumor, but the food is classically good. I believe the noodles are made in house. I asked for my spicy seafood noodles soup extra spicy and it was sweat producing spicy. So good. Other great additions to the meal, a guaranteed side dish, sweet and sour pork. But this sweet and sour pork isn't like the pink chinese version. This is less sweet and more delicious in my opinion. They also have a cucumber jellyfish salad. Yums if you like the texture cause jellyfish itself doesn't have much of a flavor on its own. Check this place out just remember to put a dollar in the parking box. read more

Wow, I've finally found a real Korean-Chinese restaurant in Honolulu. Generally, there are three main dishes presented in a Korean-Chinese restaurant. They are Black-Bean-Sauce Noodles, Spicy Seafood Noodle Soup and Sweet & Sour Pork. I have already tried the Black-Bean-Sauce Noodles and Spicy Seafood Noodle Soup. They are both extremely delicious and melted in my mouth. I'll make sure to try the sweeet and sour pork next time I visit! The servers were very kind and attentive. The bathrooms were also fairly clean. Only downside was the parking. There are limited stalls, however, you can always try parking at Ala Moana or other spots. read more

I can't complain that i didnt like the jajangmyeon because the waitress warned me many times if we were gonna be ok with super duper spicy. This is a Korean style Chinese food place. My first time at such a place, but I think it's basically Chinese food made Korean style. A very small place, and a lot of people knew each other. Service was fast and friendly. I didn't like the food that much, but it could've been that I didn't quite know how to order. First dish was a chicken dish mixed with vegetables served over thin slices of rice paper. Second dish was a noodle dish that was very tasty. Third dish was a spicy soup, I had no idea what was in it except for cubes of tofu, but it was good and spicy and we ate it all. I'd come back if I read the menu more carefully next time, my friend is Korean so I let her do the ordering. I'd like to go there again soon and perhaps I can give it a higher rating. Chinese food prepared by Koreans, perhaps immigrants to China or northern Koreans whose food has been shaped by Chinese diners. Wait staff was Korean or spoke Korean, cook was Chinese. Very interesting hybrid; as we're neither Chinese nor Korean culturally, and pretty American eaters at that, we weren't very familiar with the flavor profiles, but: Dishes were very well executed in regard to carefully designed tastes. Spicy black bean noodles were neither too salty nor too oily, with bits of shrimp and tako adding to its complexity of sauce; sweet-sour pork was mostly sweet--not cloying in an American way, just a key taste amidst its savoryness--without the tangy sour bite that you usually expect in similar Cantonese-Chinese dishes; mix of stir-fry veggies was surprisingly gingery without garlic or too much salt/oil. Service was impeccable and quick, in an almost regimented yet professional and friendly manner (there are no slackers working here; the 2 women were either working behind the register/counter, or tending to us/watching where we where in our meal and what we needed). And cooking itself was done quite well in terms of textures and forms (noodles were al dente; pork cut into interestingly small slivers and breaded/fried well, almost like pupus, then mixed with various veggies including nira/chives?; stir-fried veggies were still solid and crunchy to the tooth, but cooked through effectively). The banchan sides of takuan and cabbage kim chee and pickled (?) onions with some kind of Asian brown sauce (not hoisin but looked like it; much more umami-ish) were homemade and quite delicious. We regret not asking for the remaining takuan to be put into our take-home box; it was the most exceptional version of this East Asian dish I've ever had, very thin cut, super crisp, only lightly vinegared, and not super sugary (as a counterpoint to the traditional Japanese and to local Korean versions). It featured the daikon ingredient well. With spicy dishes, if you're clearly not Korean, the wait staff will ask how you like your heat. They're quite precise in what level to set the spicy at, and I felt they also matched the other flavors to this, as well. Restaurant is super clean and organized, in a way that shows the owners care about appearance and maintain it regularly. Open throughout the afternoon, so now we have one more place to go during odd dining times separate from the crowd. A superior experience in ethnic and global dining. read more

The owner and staff's are very friendly and so generous. They always treated us like we were the only people in the restaurant when it's so crowded, but they are doing the same for everyone. They are always attentive to refill, water, tea, kimchees, daikon, and onions. We had our 3rd round of the complimentary sides and they were about to refill it again, but we were so full. And every time, their food was always so delicious. Mmmmm.. I'm in stuffed food heaven. You can never leave here still hungry. You will always be satisfied full. I get acne after eating here because food is oily just like any Chinese food. BUT it is so good I don't care and would go eat again. Not busy during weekday so it's good to dine. Weekends are crazy busy as hell. Owner I think is nice but one time I didn't tip because we didn't get water refills and didn't feel exceptional service that particular day. It was reminiscent of the Chinese food I had back in Korea. It comes in big portions and I was definitely full after the meal. The only thing I'm not a fan of is the location/parking. For one, the ajima that served us didn't give us water nor did she come to our table to ask if we needed anything else. We were hungry and so we saw this restaurant and said why the hell not? We ordered kung pao shrimp, fried rice, and the #10 hot wings. The fried rice was good! The kung pao that that perfect heat along with the flavors. And let me tell you about them wings... if you like spice like we do I advice you to order these! My favorite places to eat. It's a Chinese restaurant with a korean twist. I absolutely love the sweet and sour pork. I wish I had the recipe to make it since I moved to Washington . My boyfriend and I would always come here for the sweet sour pork and he would get pork friend rice and we would get the spicy black bean noodles to go when we would leave. I love the complementary sides they would give. The onions, pickle daikon, and kimchi. I love how fresh the kimchi is and it still has a nice crunch. I like to put the vinegar on top of the onions and daikon. They also refill when you finish the bowls they give. I put the vinegar and shoyu with pepper flakes and dip the sweet and sour pork in there. This is the place I miss most and will be the first place to eat when I go back to Oahu. Just had some popular dishes for korean chinese food, black bean noodles, spicy noodle, and garlic spicy fried chicken. We ordered them without msg and they were still very good. The black bean sauce is sweeter than most I've had and I really like it. The spicy noodle soup has a clean taste to it, and the spicy chicken was eaten up by the kids. Had wondered about the jjajangmyun that you see so often being scarfed up in those Korean TV dramas. So, when I heard about the five-star rating for this new restaurant, especially for the black bean sauce noodle, I had to stop by. I guess one should call this a Korean-style Chinese restaurant. Specialties appeal to Korean taste and interpretation of Chinese food. Owner and Chef Liu has one other chef, his son, so it's all in the family. I ordered the jjajangmyun along with a dish of their sweet sour deep-fried pork. As billed, the sauce was thick and rich. Had to be told to mix the sauce with the noodles. What entered my mouth was a sweetish, savory mix of black bean sauce and surprisingly tender noodles. I could understand why Koreans like jjajangmyun so much. The sweet sour deep-fried pork was ono, too, the crunch and sweet-sour tang offering a contrast to the mild sweetness of the noodles. Meal came with three sides -- onion with a hoisin-like sauce, pickled takuan, and kim chee. I enjoyed the onion-and-hoisin. Finished it up. The kim chee was a surprise as it was aged, with a rich, just-right sourness. Refreshing. Anyway, I don't usually write reviews, but the restaurant being relatively new, it was nice to be in on the beginning of what appears to be a growing audience of happy customers. Testimony to that is that although the restaurant is on the backside of the 510 Piikoi building, people do find it. And I heard a lot of Korean-speaking customers while I was there.
