Chicken tacos are so bland! I was so surprised- they tasted like nothing. And the chips were stale. I must be getting picky since El Pollo Loco tacos are so much better and their chips are fresher and salted! I went back and ordered a combo meal and they were okay- the chicken fajitas were a little bland, the carne asada quesadilla was much better.

Fairly decent food at #2. I haven't been to the original El Sombrero, so I couldn't tell you if it's any better or worse. I can tell you this, it's way better than what sits across the parking lot. Located at the end of a strip mall, #2 makes do with what little space that has been allotted them. If you're not friendly with whom you're sitting at the beginning of your meal, you sure will be by the end! Quite intimate are the booths. As I mentioned, the food is fairly decent. I believe that I'm being fair with that assessment. There are some hits and misses, but mostly hits. Like the taquitos. They're big and flavorful, and they come with rice and beans, which are also a hit. I'd take a pass on the ground beef offerings. There's better stuff on the menu. Try the Chile Rellenos, though. They're spot on. You'll get full at "the hat." If you're looking for a place to take the edge off a long day of surfing, or if you've got the munchies, this is for you. The prices are a bit steep, but bite the bullet. It's worth it because they don't use lard. That lubricant can foul up the stoutest of constitutions. Quick Tip: I wonder if anyone has noticed that they serve their Coke in Pepsi cups.

Old School hole in the wall but still delicious traditional Mexican food. I ordered just one Beef crunchy taco. Originally I thing this was a pick up n go.or maybe a fast food type of dining, however, there were quite a few patrons seated and it was near capacity. Changing my mind, I decided I'd sit dow and took the last table. After i ordered at the front the cashier and the servers were quite chill bringing me water and chips. These chips were not greasy at all. A little thicker than usual but tasty. I enjoyed my quick stop between errands here. Will be back. Parking in the mini-strip mall.

I was looking for a new Mexican restaurant and think I have found one with El Sombrero! I ordered take out, however, the restaurant is spacious but cozy and next time I'll be sitting down to eat! I ordered the Viking Burrito (which I thought was a weird name for a burrito), and it might have been one of the tastiest burritos I've had in the South Bay! Every flavor was pronounced, the citrus in the carnitas, the beans, the rice and the AMAZING green sauce to make it wet! Absolutely loved this burrito! Homemade chips and their salsa has a unique flavor and is delicious! On top of that, the front counter person was SUPER nice.

At 57, having lived my entire life in Southern California, I know good, authentic Mexican cuisine. This place is definitely not that. The chips are cold and taste like they come from a factory bag, not cooked there fresh, warm and greasy as they SHOULD ALWAYS BE. The salsa is extremely bland and tastes sweet. They were not able to put anything really spicy inside my burrito like serranos, habañeros or even jalapeños. To make it spicy, they brought me a bottle of Tapatío. Whatever. The sauce on my wet burrito tasted like it came from a can. I took two bites, stabbed my fork into it, told the cashier what I thought of their cuisine, paid my $17.50 and left, never to return again... IN ALL SERIOUSNESS, I WOULD RATHER HAVE TACO BELL BECAUSE YOU KNOW IT IS KIDDIE FOOD. IT'S NOT PRETENDING TO BE REAL MEXICAN.

I've been coming to this restaurant for over 20 years and I Think the menu should be updated. The food is of average quality. The tacos are a little bit too greasy and there's too much lettuce. Burritos are more volume over flavor. There are too many choices in Manhattan Beach now like el Tarasco and el Gringo and in Hermosa like La Penita which are as good or better. read more

I have been coming here for years. Great food, great service, reasonable prices. They do not put lard in the beans which makes it a great option for vegetarians. I'm not vegetarian anymore but frequently get the veggie burrito because it's so tasty! read more

I was really disappointed with them today. The whole staff is wearing masks and gloves which is great. Then you look in the kitchen and both people that are cooking are wearing masks and no gloves. And they're touching the counter and they're touching the tickets and they're wiping their hands on their apron. They do all this and then they prepare our food. I was really disappointed because I always like this place but I'm not gonna be returning. read more

This little mexican food spot has been there for years and it's still going strong. The food is cheap yet high quality and fresh. I absolutely love the salsa and most of all the taco sauce. I crave it a lot. The restaurant is small so try and get there early for a quick seat but if you do have to wait the wait isn't too long because the food comes out quick and extra hot. The service is great! If you feel like a quick take out place this is the spot for you as well! So good. They have an awesome kids menu as well. read more

El Sombrero (#2) is one of my favorite South Bay spots. Of course there's always a "better" Mexican restaurant somewhere (it's no Don Antonio's/ West LA) but it's a solid weeknight dinner. The people are nice, the prices are good, and so is the food. I judge every Mexican restaurant by the quality of their Chile Relleno and Carnitas - and El Sombero does not disappoint. I love the homestyle fried egg omelette wrapper (not the weird egg-like covering you'd find at an El Torito) on the Chile Relleno and the Carnitas Burrito (dry) is one of my standards. Crispy and juicy shredded pork with lettuce and pico de gallo. Simple and delicious. read more

OMG. Rarely do I crave Mexican food, but this place is da bomb. I discovered it when friends brought their food to a Hermosa Beach concert. The Carne Asada taco is huge and delicious! This has got to be one of the worst Mexican restaurants out there, honestly. First, they have such a lack of meats to choose from... ground beef? If I wanted ground beef I could just go get hamburger helper. The portions are good sized but I almost couldn't even eat the thing. It lacked so much flavor. I be been eating here for years and the food and the gals that work at El Gringo are top notch . A taco burrito to die for !! I'd give this place 5 stars but In good conscious I can't because even though they have The best salsa in town, they often give stale and always COLD chips. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE INVEST IN CHIP WARMERS! Warm , fresh chips delivered to the table with the house salsa would be out of this world ! Love El Gringo ! read more

Our new go-to place on a weeknight, weekend, anytime. Its pretty much a hole-in-the-wall mexican place, but aren't those always the best? After 1.5 tacos, I'm usually about done b/c they are huuuge. But very very delicious. Also cheap. And remember, its El Sombrero Numero DOS! (Numero Uno apparently burned down...). Try it! read more

My go to Mexican spot in the South Bay. I love me some carnitas as there's are the best. The carnitas taco (ask for no cheese or lettuce - gringo crap) with cilantro and onion is the real deal. My kids like the chicken tacos, cheese enchiladas and the chile Relano is yummy too. Great service, low prices and lollipops for the kids. #2 is #1! read more

Living in CA has made me spoiled to good Mexican food. This place was good, but it was average good for Cali. Their homemade salsa was very tasty. Lots of locals frequent this place so it's always bustling. They are great at filling your water cup. I ordered the chicken burrito and think they used lots of dark meat and I even ate some cartilage. read more

This little hole in the wall is located in a strip mall and easily missed. I was in the area and craving Mexican food. Read several reviews about how great the carnitas burrito. Unfortunately, the carnitas burrito did not come with beans, rice, guacamole or any of the extra good stuff. Our waiter suggested we order the Sombrero Burrito and he would substitute the ground beef with carnitas. Very nice....most restaurants balk at substitutions. We couldn't decide between the red or green sauce. Once again our waiter made another suggestion. He offered to make it half and half so we could try both sauces. Totally impressed! Portions are generous....Mom and I each had half a burrito to take home. The perfect ratio of carnitas to rice and beans. Most importantly, the carnitas was tender and moist. Just for the record, I thought the green sauce tasted best with carnitas. Excellent customer service. Our waiter went above and beyond to help mom and I create the perfect burrito. read more

Hats off to you, El Sombrero, for bringing my tastebuds alive after a 2-hour ride into town from San Diego. The shredded beef taco makes my mouth water even now, as I sit miles away from Manhattan Beach. My husband ordered the chile relleno, which was more than enough for his huge appetite. The chips and salsa were also delicious, and the service was a welcome reprieve among some pretty snooty stores. Best of all, our toddler loved her shredded chicken, which had just the right amount of taste to keep her interest. read more

Our server was super duper friendly and even had multiple conversations with us throughout the meal, sharing anecdotes and talking to my tattoo artist friend about getting a tat from her LOL. We quickly ordered some chips and queso (not free) and were blown away by how creamy and tasty the queso was. The tortas were also delicious and easy to scoop a lot of cheese on to. On to the menu, they had a good variety of Mexican dishes, but the price point, man. I thought $4-5 a taco at Barrio Queen in Arizona was steep, but this place charged $7-8 for a single small taco. I would've been okay with any menu item since it's Mexican and nothing under that cuisine could be bad, but seeing each enchilada over $30, made me steer clear of the main entree dishes. I also knew I wanted to try fish tacos, so I just opted for one fish taco and one grilled taco, with a side of mashed black beans. Crazy that some black beans also were at least $5. The fish taco was nicely battered and the guacamole was ripe and creamy, but the grilled chicken taco was nothing spectacular. There was also cauliflower tacos and beef brisket tacos ordered among us. My friend who ordered the beef brisket taco rated it 7.5/10, whereas the cauliflower tacos were rated 9/10. The food also took at least 20 minutes to arrive at the table. Both sauces my tacos came with were extremely spicy so I didn't even touch those. My friends enjoyed their meals, and the side of green rice two of them got was rather tasty. Overall, our server was the best part of the experience. She really ate DOWN, whereas our food and the price point did not.

However, A white man walks up less than a minute later and for some reason he decides to ask him if he ready to order, as if I'm invisible. This was the second time that this happened to me today and God knows how many times has happened to me in life. So at some point, I just have to stop ignoring the fact that Black people aren't welcome in certain spaces. Maybe we are by law, but not at all met with respect! That is all!

Our server was very attentive, kind, patient, and accommodating. For example, when my sister in law asked if there was a kid's menu for her children, the server politely stated that they didn't have one. I, on the other hand, was disappointed with most of the food I had. If I had to rate the food, it would be 3 stars. I ordered the MB Post Burger, which comes with a 1/2 pound grilled patty, American Cheese, applewood bacon, and honey chipotle aioli, between English muffin buns. I added a sunny side up egg to it for an extra few bucks. The burger was messy, and difficult to eat. Ended up having to eat it with a fork and knife. I expected the egg to be a bit runny, but it was cooked all the way through. All in all, it wasn't enjoyable to eat. The crispy fries were not any better. To me, they tasted overly fried. The only thing I thought was exceptional was the bacon cheddar buttermilk biscuit with the whipped honey butter. It was buttery and crispy goodness. This item alone is worth coming back to this restaurant. Overall, this place is a solid 4 star restaurant. If you're planning on visiting this place, I have to warn you that parking may be a real pain to find since the area is very popular with beach goers. Things were exacerbated over the weekend due to a volleyball tournament. Had to drive around for like 30 minutes to find parking.

Uuuhhh gross! This is not Mexican food.... Sorry people...eating ground beef tacos and burritos at a Mexican food place is like eating bologna at a sandwich shop.....I saw carnitas as the other alternative... I opted for a salad. I live in the IE and there aren't many Mexican places there, but I have to say it's a lot better than this place. The prices are extremely high for ground beef tacos $3.25?? But I suppose that's the price you pay for being so close to the beach... The customer service was very good....she hoped we would return, unfortunately I'll have to pass. read more

Best salsa in town, nay, in the South Bay. This place has been around forever. My kids and I have been coming here for nearly 20 years. They are by far the best Mexican place around. Everyone thinks the fancy place in town is where to go, but in all honesty, this is where you need to be if you, your family, and friends want some comforting Mexican food. Fresh ingredients, easy decision making, and quick service. Can't complain much with a place that seems to have stayed in business for half my life. CONGRATS! read more

DEEEELLICIOUS! I highly recommend going to Manhattan Beach for the day, soaking up some rays on the beach, then heading to El Sombrero and getting a burrito and a pitcher of Sangria...you'll be in heaven. One word of wisdom though, share the burrito! It's ginormous!! Very delicious though. Also, when you get your chips and salsa, ask for the taco sauce, it is also mucho bueno ;). This place in an institution. Really big plates that overflow with rice and vegetarian beans. When I would take my kids here, they would always be able to share, as long we ordered extra guacamole.
