LOCAL business that is always bustling. We call it EL Som. our family meets there at least one time a week. The waiters all know us, but they know everyone. This is repeat business central. We love the feeling and the food. Its easy to move around a table or two when we add our family members. The wait is never too long. We see our neighbors and friends there too. I have been eating at El Sombrero since 1981 and in my opinion it's the best Mexican food in the South Bay. I've been ordering there for years and it's one of the few places that always tastes good every time I order. Favorites are the Cheese Enchiladas, Taco Burrito, Bean and Cheese Burrito, and Chile Relleno. The salsa is also very good and I usually order a large salsa with my to go order so I have it all week. While the prices aren't what they once were, a 1.10 for a bean and cheese burrito it is still reasonable and whenever I am up in MB I stop by and get take out. For vegetarians and vegans out there everything is made with vegetable oil - no lard. read more

We tried this place for the first time tonight. Less than impressed. We tried the Sombrero burrito, the carnitas burrito, the nachos and the quesadilla. I had the carnitas burrito. It wasn't that filling, and the carnitas was burnt. The nachos had terrible, stale chips. The quesadilla was bland-meaning they must use really low quality cheese? I've eaten lunch here three times now. It is my new go to Mexican place for the South Bay. Food: 1) Chile Colorodo - good chunk beef and flavorful red sauce. Comes with refried beans, rice and tortillas. I llike the flour tortillas. Portion size is large. 2) Pork Chili Verde - similar to chile colorado but pork and green sauce. very good and large. 3) chicken super burrito - ginormous burrito stuffed with chicken, beans, rice, guac, and sour cream. Then covered with enchilada sauce. Not what I called true Mexican food, but good burrito if this is what you like. 4) tortilla chips - good crunch and fresh flavor 5) salsa - good flavor and medium spice. I really like it and have to be careful that I do not fill up on chips and salsa Overall, all emjoyable and tasty meals, Service: Gia is very attentive to filling up drinks and has a relaxed friendly demeanor. Other support staff continually refill chips and salsa. Food delivered in a timely manner; perfect for lunches Price: Reasonable for quality and portion size Atmosphere: Laid back, family friendly. I've been coming here occasionally for years. Food is decent but buyer beware. Ended up paying $10 for a $6 kids meal because the menu is not clear (Note: not same as shown in Yelp). Apparently a small quesadilla does not include the rice and beans next to it, but the menu format looks like it does ... however an enchilada does include the side. Server did not care when I complained about the extra charge. Paid it, but there are too many other good small Mexican restaurants nearby to return again for this nonsense. read more

This is a family-owned, hole-in-the-wall restaurant, a real treasure! I've been eating here for more than 20 years! I obviously like this place, and here is why. I like the style of food they have, the quality is first rate and the people that work there are more than eager to please; plus they never get my order wrong. I like guacamole very much, but I also understand how expensive avocados are, and know that you will pay a lot for it in a restaurant. I'm not a fan of El Sombrero's guac because I'm a Plain Jane and don't like the things they add to make the avocado go farther. If you just want avocado, tell them, they will accommodate you if they can. The owner is very nice and his goal is to please you. The beans and rice are perfect and the (all-white) chicken fajitas are out-of-this-world good and enough for two people! The salsa is homemade and THE best around. The prices are comparable to other Mexican Restaurants of its caliber in the area; the average bill for two people is $25-$30 if you get drinks. If you want to keep it cheap -- share -- you'll still be full afterward! They have HAPPY HOUR now, on TUESDAYS! Their food is what I like to call --clean -- and I don't mind paying a bit more for it. If you don't like paying the price, go to that joint down the street on Felton and get all the LARD you like. ;) TIP: If you order crispy tacos, request that they be served on a separate plate, they're not fried to death and may fall apart easily. Though I walked away feeling satisfied, El Sombrero's food felt as if it was missing something. I come here at least once a week for lunch. Am never disappointed with the food! Great chips and salsa on the house! Cheap bottled beer and Big portions for a cheep price! The burritos are the size of the plate and have an amazing red sauce on top! I love the enchiladas are well made and they made tamales daily! Combos come with amazing rice and beans. Best Chile Relleno I have had: not too much cheese, a bit crisp chile, excellent egg coating and the red sauce served with it is a perfect complement. The chicken taco was good.
