Came here for dinner and drinks on a thursday night, this place is known to have a wait but we did not encounter one this night. A little warning is we did have to climb around five flights of stairs to get to the venue as the elevator was for staff only. Not sure if this is a covid precaution or its thats the norm. The flights are quite short and manageable but I would NOT recommend wearing heels. Our party of six got seated right away upon climbing the stairs and was lead to a table with a view! The servers were attentive and very pleasant. We ordered the fish tacos which came crispy and delicious! The fish was perfectly cooked, moist with a light and crunchy exterior. The dish also came with salsa which was a little spicy and the perfect topping. We also ordered a shrimp plate which was also a delight! The skewer had nice char marks which added good flavor but not the burnt type of flavor. This dish also came with black beans and rice which were also pretty good. For dessert our table tried the rice pudding which was cinnamony and fragrant but light. We also tried the fried plantains which were also a hit. And for drinks we ordered a pitcher for the table which we did finish. First visit, we got the guac, ceviche, salsa botanera with chips, habanero salsa, queso fundido, a bunch of tacos (two each of the pork, brisket, and shrimp), and the flan/caramel popsicle. The guac and both salsas were outstanding. I loved the ceviche, but my wife hates cilantro and there was a lot of it. The queso fundido seems like it would be great as well, but there was so much cilantro that my wife basically found it inedible. We loved the tacos -- especially the shrimp for me, and hte brisket for my wife. The popsicle was amazing too, even though the flavor wouldn't normally be something that would call out to us. First time here and I liked the ambiance of this establishment. Rooftop vibes, heaters, a view of the mission and great drinks and food? Amazing. With a party of 8, we were able to get a variety of different foods to try and sample and man oh man. Definitely loved the empanadas, chicharrones de carne, fish tacos, even the chips y salsa. Priced about right for tapas style and SF pricing, I liked how at night, it felt much more intimate and cool to be at. Definitely helpful staff as we were cold and were able to get one of the heaters right next to our table as it was a chilly night. The food was absolutely amazing in taste and didn't miss at all. I hadn't been to El Techo in awhile, so my friend and I decided it was a good time to go back to enjoy the sunny weather. I tried making reservation on Yelp for brunch, but I guess because it was the spur of the moment, there weren't any until May 25. Then I tried doing the Yelp waitlist, but it wasn't open until the restaurant opened at 11am. Luckily, we were seated after a few parties that were able to go on the waitlist or had reservations. It has a beautiful view of the city skyline. But that, and the friendly service, are the only things I can say positively about. The food was mediocre. I ordered the gallo pinto, which was rice/beans, two sunny-side eggs, plantain maduros, and a tortilla. It was okay. The plantains were the best part, but I don't know how you could mess up fried plantains. We also ordered the chips and salsa. I found the salsa to be too sweet. I liked my watermelon mimosa. The atmosphere is lively, and young. I guess I'm getting old... but you can't beat the views so I think I would come back just for the drinks and scenery. But as for the food... well, I wasn't expecting authentic Latin cuisine, but I do expect good flavor. And it missed the mark for me. They are taking all the Covid precautions. Staff are wearing masks, and there are dividers at each table. The bar area where you get an unobstructed view of the skyline has seating that's spaced out. read more

I came here on the 4th of July and reserved a table for 2 on the rooftop. The ambiance was great and very lively. The food was good too. My only qualm was the service. Because you order via QR code on their website, there isn't a dedicated wait staff--which is fine, had it not taken so long for my order to come out. My friend and I ordered the same dish. Hers came out relatively quickly, but mine took almost an hour to arrive after she received hers, which was strange. I approached the kitchen staff multiple times about it, but there didn't seem to be anyone dedicated to addressing the issue. While that dampened my experience slightly and the food seemed a little pricey for what I got, I still thought I was a decent place and had a decent time. Brought my friend for her first time during sunset hours and it was a lovely experience. We got to view the orange sun fade behind the high buildings of the mission district. Ordering and payment are through Toasttab; the food arrived quickly and I appreciated how we were able to leave whenever we wanted to since we could just pay through Toasttab. This was especially convenient since my group was in somewhat of a rush. It was an unusually hot day for SF, but I didn't feel the heat too strongly on the rooftop -- our table was under an umbrella, which helped block out the heat. The was over an hour so we figured we should walk to a bar. Halfway into our walk, the restaurant called, but we decided to go get drinks instead. HUGE mistake! We all got one drink and shared a couple appetizers. It was all meh. I downed my sangria, got a couple bites of the plantains and talked my friends into bouncing to where we were supposed to be. Came here for happy hour on a Tuesday afternoon with a couple of my friends visiting the city. I would highly recommend coming during happy hour since a lot of the items on the menu are almost half off. We opted for sharing a bunch of different appetizers, which was a great way to try a lot of things off the menu. Overall, the food was pretty good, however, I will say that the main selling point of the restaurant or the amazing rooftop views of the entire city. I wish I was a bit warmer outside to fully enjoy the space however, they do you keep a bunch of heaters on to keep you warm. Came in for dinner on Friday at around 7 PM as a party of 4 and got seated in ~35 minutes. The area they sat us in was quite high traffic and my seat was partially in the walkway so people kept bumping into me throughout the meal. We also didn't have a menu at our table and when we looked around, we also realized that we were missing the QR code that other tables were using to order their food. The restaurant was overall nice in that the views from the rooftop were great, but it did get a bit loud throughout the meal. We got a pitcher of sangria which ended up being ~2 cups per person for us. The food was also mostly small plates so we ordered many different ones to try. The pollo frito was my favorite - it was crispy, warm, and flavored really well overall. The empanadas were also good and so were the fish tacos. The ahi tuna tostadas were alright - I wish they had more flavor/marinade on the fish. Overall, seems like a good place to get drinks and small plates with friends. Came here for a couple drinks and a snack last Sunday afternoon, we were guided to the unshaded standing only bar area, shaded seating had plenty of availability but was only open to patrons ordering from the full meal menu. This review I feel is long overdue for me! I've been coming to El Techo for a year now and have gone for a large event, Happy Hour, and just dinner!! Large event: I had my birthday dinner here and I had about 10 guests. Because of our party size we didn't have an actual reservation, it was first come first serve. We put our name down at 730 and waited only about 20min! We were seated at a high table with bar stool type of chairs. My *only*' issue with this was the fact that many of the ladies wore dresses and heels and it was kind of hard to get up and down the chairs. Service for my large party was great! Super fast for all food and drink to arrive! Our waitress was so sweet and patient with us. The host at the counter at the restaurant level was a bit snarky with us, but definitely didn't ruin the experience. We had food and pitchers coming all night and our waitress kept up with all of us! Overall a great large party experience, I do wish you could make a reservation for 10 people though. Happy Hour: Super fun, drinks are yummy, and the views are great as well!! Small bites are also available at Happy Hour which is a great addition as well!! Dinner: The last time I had dinner here the food was great as well as the pina colada drink. My friend and I just had an issue with the servers kind of ignoring us! We finished our two small plates but it took awhile for someone to acknowledge us so we ended up just grabbing the check. Please get your act together and start treating your customers with respect. I understand you have rules and regulations but to be disrespected when a simple warning would have sufficed is unbelievable. Don't get mad at customers if you have a restricted area gate wide open. One of the servers said "There is literally no reason to be back here," and that tone was not warranted. Not sure if it was an act of racism, but it definitely felt targeted. One of my go to spots in the city. There's a new method of ordering (or this was the first time they did it) where Toast (POS System) can setup your order by table by person. I usually enjoy to banter with the server, get recommendations, and feel like I was served (and normally tip 20-30% because I am a server / bartender) but I really felt like we just served ourself and ordered our meal like we ordered Boba. It does streamline service and time but I am a firm believer that the people make the place and I have 0 idea who was our server today. Everything we ordered came right on time and was delicious. The house margarita pitcher refilled us with 4 margaritas. It was quiet boozy and refreshing for brunch. Having lived in SF for two years, I had always heard about El Techo but had never gone. During my last week in the city, I made a weekday reservation to see what the hype was really about. One of the main drawing points is the fact that it's one of the only rooftop bars in the city. Though that is definitely a selling point, you can't ignore the food. My boyfriend and I shared a whole bunch of starters, which was more than enough food to satisfy our appetites. Our personal fave was the empanada! Sooooo bomb. The drinks were pretty good as well.
