So many bakery options in the area but this one will definitely give you a unique selection. Located about 5 minutes off of 880 down the street from Union Landing and Seafood City. They are located on Dyer right between the gas station at the corner and apartment complex. There is a small private parking lot. They have various baked goods to choose from. Very limited locations in Philippines, Guam and luckily have one located here in the East Bay. There usually isn't someone at the front counter when you walk in but they are very aware whenever someone walks in. They will come to the front to greet you shortly. The staff is very friendly and has good customer service. Don't be shy if you have questions or not sure what specific items are. They will be more than happy to inform you. The Guava cake was light, moist and very flavorful with whipped frosting on top. I am a big fan of guava and they definitely exceeded my expectations. This is were I prefer to go now if anyone requests guava cake. You can order a whole cake or come in to pick up a pretty generous sized slice. The Latiya has white sponge cake layered by light custard on top and lightly dusted with cinnamon. The White sponge cake was light, and moist. Thought all the flavors complemented each other very well and was pretty good. The Latiya comes in a two size options. You can choose between the personal and regular pie size. The Empanadas are made to order. Orders may take 10-15 minutes to complete but you can call in your order ahead of time. Finally finally tried their infamous GUAVA CAKE!!! Customer Service-came as a walk in and needed a cake the next day for my sister's birthday. The lady that helped me was so sweet and thankfully they had guava cakes freshly baked since it's high on demand. Since my sister was young, she was always called Sugarplum so when the lady asked what I want written, I told her that my sister was hating life lol turning her age and was not in the birthday spirit. So we both joked and came up with "Sugar Plums don't age!" She even said they get sweeter with age! I also bought their banana donuts and the lady was just so nice and patient as I couldn't decide what else to buy. GUAVA CAKE-moist..goodness!!! I hear there are not many in the bay area. Great customer service. I met owner Ken who was very friendly, nice and gave us samples to try. Of course, I loved them all and had to buy some. I recommend getting the empanadas which are made of a flaky corn bread and inside is of mushy chicken. They sell it as mild or spicy versions. I like the spicy version better. They are $2.50 each cooked or not. They should have reduced the price if bought uncooked. This is why the 4 stars instead of 5. I recommending calling before picking up. I also recommend the Piyaya Hopia which looks like a squashed Hopia. The regular Hopia is lightly breaded and better then the regular Hopia's you get in the market. The Latiya Pie is good, too and cost $12.95; a little too pricy for me. This pie has a moist cake on the bottom and a thick custard filling on top with drizzle of cinnamon spice. We tried the chocolate chip cookie and donuts. They were ok and not their specialties. I have to come back for the chiffon guava cake since that is one of their most popular items in their bakery. I discovered this place after my Aunt brought over some Guamanian empanadas over for Christmas dinner! I stopped by one day after the gym to buy 2 empanadas and ended up with so much more: 2 empanadas, 2 cupcakes, and then I ended up ordering a custom made cake by Ken! I was browsing around the bakery and looking at the books to see their previous work. Luckily, Ken was there. He is the cake designer and creator. I spoke to Ken about my vision and what I was looking for him to create. Immediately he started sketching out some ideas that we discussed. I threw a surprise 80s murder mystery party for my fiancé! I wanted a cake that was everything 80s: bright, neon colors, boom box, Walkman, Converse, rubric cubes, etc... Ken was really good about asking me what I like, whether it was design or taste. Based on our conversation, Pinterest board and Google images review, we had an idea sketched out. Afterwards, I communicated with Ken via e-mail. I sent him graphics of what I liked. From there, he was able to come up with this awesome design. Best of all, he stayed within my budget and he was willing to work with me. He never tried to up sell me. He was just an all around nice and honest person. I respect business people who practice these basic customer service skills (and people skills). He also had ideas and suggestions, which I valued. The cake tasted just as good as it looks! I went with the guava chiffon cake! It was delicious! Everyone at the party raved about how good it was. They asked me where I got it from and they were happy to know it came from Elite because it's in their neighborhood! They went back for seconds and the entire cake was gone so quick! I should have bought a bigger cake but I had no idea everyone would consume that much? In addition to the cake, I also bought 20 empanadas: half mild and half spicy. Everyone ate them, and had like 3 to 4 each! They couldn't stop eating them. All of our friends from all races thought these were delicious (Indian, Fijian, Filipino, Caucasian, Chinese)! Elite threw in a free one because I had to wait a little while they fried them. They weren't ready when I got there. Since they made them while I was there, they were hot for a while before I served them at the party. These were a hit! I think these will be a staple for every party we throw! The Guamanian empanadas are way better than the Filipino ones! By far, superior! The whole process was simple. Communication was easy and responsive. I paid for everything on the phone! For the most part, everything was in order before I came. I think we found our new family baker! Now I just need to convince Ken to make gluten free cakes and cupcakes! I am allergic to gluten so I can certainly say it was worth trying the cake! I used a Benadryl so that I could eat the cake! It was a special occasion and I wanted to try it so bad, and I'm glad that I did! They also gave me a slice of a new flavor they are trying out: passion fruit, orange! Perhaps Ken may consider also making some gluten free and dairy free cakes and cupcakes. Two of our other family members who are Autistic, typically eat gluten free and dairy free diets. Discovered Elite Bakery in my search to find a custom cake for my parents surprise 40th anniversary party. I checked out all the yelp reviews and their Facebook page which directed me to email regarding custom cakes. I emailed with an image of the design I wanted and got a quote I could afford. Next I went to visit the bakery on a Saturday and checked out their flavors. We tried the mango, guava and taro cupcakes. Flavors were good and cupcakes were moist. They were busy, but we discussed a time for me to come back so we could discuss the design and finalize my order (not a big deal since it's close enough to home). When I returned to discuss the order Ken was great in answering my questions and going over details of the design. I decided to go with Ube for the custom cake and 2 dozen guava cupcakes. When I came to pick up the custom cake was above and beyond the design I was expecting! So beautiful! A good number of the guests were not familiar at all with island flavors. The ube was a huge hit and the favorite of many guests! Numerous times I had to answer what is ube? how do you spell it? What bakery did you go to? My aunt was disappointed I ordered a formal fondant cake expecting to miss the buttercream frosting, but even she was super impressed on how delicious it was! Elite Bakery popped up as a nearby bakery in Union City, and the pictures, price averages, and reviews of full flavored cakes swayed me to give them a try. As diehard Indians, my parents usually love mango-flavored anything. But guava is a close second! I went in-person to try the highly reviewed guava cupcake and it was delicious. The owner (whose name I have shamelessly forgotten) let me know that the cupcakes don't taste the same as the full cakes, which was good to know and definitely true. My husband and I placed an order for a 1/4th sheet guava cake. I didn't like the way the original guava filling is used as decor on the top of the cake, instead of frosting, but the owner advised that using cream or frosting on top would lessen the effect of the fresh guava taste. I am SO glad I listened to his advice--not only did he deliver on his promise to still decorate the cake beautifully and make sure the fresh guava filling was smooth on top, but I really can't imagine the cake tasting as good without it! The cake is chiffon cake, light and not dry or sugary. The cream that was used on the sides as frosting is whipped cream, also very light and not too sugary. Overall, the cake was a hit amongst everyone--hard to do with Indian elders! I would highly recommend this bakery for special occasions. In truth, I'm a little torn about this place. That's why it's taken me a while to write this review. Alas, I'm a big believer in supporting local businesses. Plus, as someone who was born and raised on Guam, I'm totally excited that there's a place that sells some of that local Guam goodness. That alone, makes me love you. With that, I'll start with the good.... There are a few things I love about Elite Bakery. As a Guam gal, I love having access to delicious local treats that have escaped me because I've been living in this concrete jungle for so long! As others have mentioned, the Chamorro empanada is great and definitely reminds me of home. When I'm in the area, I can't help but stop by and grab a few. Another noteworthy treat is the bonuelos. It reminds me of my childhood. I haven't tried the other Guam treats, so I'll do a full update when that happens. Here's the not-so-good. While I love that there's all this fantastic food that I remember from my childhood, it kind of pains me that it costs so much. Chamoru empanada runs about $2.50/ piece and there's no price break if you order larger quantities. (That makes it hard to order for parties and such. Hence, my sad face.) The bonuelos runs $1 a piece. Again, I don't mind paying that, but it pains me because it's a bit hefty for what it is. I haven't tried the other things from the Guam menu, largely because it strikes me as a bit pricey for what it is. (Okay. Going to Elite is way cheaper than a flight to Guam. But still. Capitalizing on my childhood nostalgia is kind of mean!) I haven't tried the other Filipino style treats there. But I am impressed by their selection. In the past, I've had their butter rolls and taro bread which are super yummy. In all, I'm obviously going to come back. I was craving for empanadas and decided to stop by at this famous Filipino/Guamanian bakery. The place is big compared to the other bakeshops within the vicinity (Goldilocks, Valerio's, Red Ribbon) and it offers so much variety of pastries, cakes, cupcakes, breads, and island delicacies. Here is my review of the following areas - FOOD *Empanadas (Mild or Spicy) The mild empanadas were yummy. The entire crust is thick and crunchy. The well-blended filling made of garlic, onions, rice, and chicken is so soft and mushy. Then the chili pepper (taco?) seasoning. Whatever it is, it's sooo good! It gives the empanada its uniquely piquant flavor. I love it! The empanadas are cooked to order and the wait takes approximately 10 minutes for small batches. *Kelaguen A Guamanian version of the Filipino sisig, except the kelaguen has grated coconut. Spicy and flavorful, it's best served in a warm flour tortilla or with rice. *Pan de Sal Smaller in size than the other bakeshops', these light, airy rolls are cheesier. I also noticed a bitter aftertaste. I tried dipping them in coffee at breakfast time, and it tastes different than what I've been accustomed to. I think I'll stick to Valerio's for the pan de sal. *Chicken Siopao Nothing out of the ordinary. It took two bites to get to the chicken filling. I ate the siopao right after I finished the empanada, so the siopao's flavor was bland to taste. I will have to try it as a snack on its own, and see how it compares. *Latiya A sponge cake with pastry cream topping and sprinkled with cinnamon powder. The cake is moist and the pastry cream reminds me of tapioca vanilla pudding, but without the tapioca. It's a really good dessert and it was foolish of me to think I could finish the whole small plate of Latiya in one sitting. 1/2 way through the snack, my tummy was getting queasy. I saved the rest of it for hubby to try, and he loved it, too. *Guava Cupcake Light and moist cupcake mixed with guava juice filling. Very good! It was on the last bite when I actually tasted the guava flavor, which was simply amazing. SERVICE The two owners were friendly. The gentleman (Ken) introduced himself as the assistant baker, cashier and janitor--and I thought that was funny. They try to create a family atmosphere and offer their customers the ability to customize their cake orders. Baking cakes and cupcakes is no joke; it takes a lot of time, effort, precision, and patience to bake a good cake--which justifies the expensive rates. Ken seems honest and comfortable enough to talk about pricing, offering suggestions as to what would be most cost effective for customers who are on a budget while still getting their primary needs met. CLEANLINESS The bakeshop is clean and organized. There are three sets of tables and chairs for those who wish to dine in. REALLY great bakery. They guamanian empanadas are pretty amazing. I ordered mine deep fried (totally not healthy, but hey... You're at a bakery) and we'll work it. Note that the empanadas are made to order, so there's some wait time depending on how many you get. I ordered a dozen, and it took about 15-20 minutes. But it was well worth it. They stayed crispy for a day or too. Cupcakes - picked up strawberry and guava and they were both tasty. They aren't frosting heavy like Sprinkles (which I personally don't like) but the cake itself was very moist and pretty dense. Good flavor, and not overly sweet. If you prefer something lighter and airy, the cupcakes might not be to your liking, but I still recommend giving it a shot. The lady at the front was really nice and helped me decide on the cupcakes. They also had red velvet and oreo. They also sell pan de sal and hopia as well. Wow. That's all I got. I'm kind of in shock. I was really ready to write this cake off. The first day, the flavor was reminiscent of strawberry jam and the cake itself was a little on the dry and bland side. One day later, the guava flavor comes through and the cake is a decently moist chiffon. I was really surprised! The cake taste very natural, not at all too sweet and because it's so light, you really could enjoy a good size slice without it weighing you down. Everyone who shared it with me really enjoyed the cake as well. They kept commenting on how it's not too sweet and is really good. They said it taste like true guava. This is the first cake I've encountered that gets better with time, not worse. It was a good experience. The cupcakes were also amazing. Some really stood out and others I could have left behind. My hands down favorite was the coconut cupcake. Oh my gosh, that coconut flavor, moist batter and coconut cream frosting made my day! It was so good! I never thought I'd say this but I loved the pistachio cupcake! I don't know how they did it but that nutty pistachio flavor never tasted as good as as dessert. I'm not even a pistachio lover but I loved that. The pandan cupcake was ok. Not bad, just didn't stand out as much. And I love taro but the taro cupcake, though it captured the taro scent, tasted more like flour. Didn't pack much flavor. I respect them for trying though. I could imagine making a taro cupcake was not easy. I did try the senorita breads and unfortunately, that did not get better with time.
