This was our first time exploring Noe Valley. My bf's name is Eric so I thought it'd be fun to take him to Eric's. The first thing we noticed was that they had Szechuan dishes, Japanese dishes, and wine on their menu, meaning it probably wasn't very authentic Chinese food. We ordered steamed dumplings and mapo bean curd with white rice. The complimentary lemon water and hot tea were served very quickly. We didn't wait too long before our steamed dumplings came out. The dumplings were decent but the skin broke too easily. The mapo bean curd was flavorful but we were disappointed by the lack of spiciness and numbing sensation. Since we were questioning the authenticity of Eric's Restaurant, the post-meal dessert was the moment of truth. Were they going to bring us fortune cookies or fruits? Thanks to reading the San Francisco magazine, I learned about Eric's. In a readers' poll from about two years ago, it was ranked as one of the best Chinese restaurants in the city. So, I gave the restaurant a try and have never regretted. The dishes have been prepared more towards the American palate. My favorite dishes there are the Rainbow Fish, Mongolian Beef, General Tsao's Chicken, Green Beans and Tofu, Potstickers, and Crab Rangoon. I tried their Fried Rice once and didn't like it at all...didn't have much of a flavor. My co-workers and I go there for lunch every other month or so as they have daily lunch specials that are pretty cheap. read more

I usually come to Eric's on Christmas Eve as it has become a tradition for me and my partner, again it was a perfect meal. Everything was served hot and fresh. I enjoy the vegetable fried rice as the veggies are always fresh and crispy. We usually order crispy orange beef and broccoli and cashew chicken again the veggies were fresh and green and all the food was hot. I've been coming here with my family for over 10 years and the last couple of times we've been getting such a mean waiter. It's to the point where he's tossing your plates on the table and spilling some of my hot tea as he threw the plate next to my baby and not saying sorry. I'm afraid to ever ask for anything because he always replies "sureee" like you're annoying him and as your ordering he doesn't even let you finish before he's already walking away . My 2 friends and I arrived this past Friday night at just before 9:00pm to dine in. There was a large party of 6 people dining. I walked to the back of the restaurant and spoke to one of the waiters. He said we could place a take out order, but dine in was closed. My friends and I said you advertise that you are open til 10:00pm. I was excited to try this restaurant. But it was not what I expected. The services was not good at all, actually the server/ cashier person was super rude. For some reason he kept talking very loudly to me and aggressive when I have him my money to paid. Alright, the food was okay. I already had a bad taste in my mouth due to the rude service. This is the most unassuming Asian restaurant I've been to because 1. the name, 2. the look and feel on the outside, 3. minimal Asian-inspired decor inside, and 4. the location. With that said, the food was good and fairly priced for a somewhat up-scale Chinese restaurant. The style is Hunan and Mandarin, which means that the options range from moderate to spicy. We ordered: - Combination (chicken and pork) fried rice - Portobello mushrooms and beef - Honey walnut shrimp Honestly their portions are very good. It was just the two of us and we could have easily fed three. I think that the honey walnut shrimp could have been better. It was very average at best. I'd forego that dish. Portobello mushrooms and beef was the best dish. If you order a fried rice or chow mein dish, you won't need to pay extra for steamed rice. Started going to this neighborhood restaurant in 1998. Now that we live in the East Bay, we can not even drive by the city without jumping off the freeway to get Eric's to go. Not fancy, but no special occasion or family- friendly city jaunt is complete without a stop at Eric's. The fortunes seem magical and always appropriate. After hiking for five hours on Mt Tam and a proposal from my brand-new fiancé, his fortune read "you and your wife will be happy in your life together". Make sure you pick the cookie that is pointing to you and nobody touches them or passes them out. Finding good Chineese Food in The City is difficult, NOT! But finding the ideal Chineese spot in the neighborhood you are in is a bit more of a task. Eric's (yes it's Chineese) is the spot in Noe Valley. It's a low-key but popular Noe Valley Chinese restaurant serving large portions of classic dishes. Potstickers, Mu - Shu Pork, and all the regular dudes you come to expect are there. The one dish I highly recommend is the General Tso's Chicken. Over the top seasoned perfectly, chicken to die for. If there are 6 or more in your party I recommend 2 orders. Service is excellent and they are very accommodating to making your dining experience mist memorable. read more

They have wine and beer, reasonably priced and great, clean decor and friendly service. I love Chinese food and don't trust any other place so I decided to give them another chance. My boyfriend and I have been coming for their lunch special which is such a good deal! Hot soup and 2 entrees with rice for $20 has me hooked, especially their Hunan fish and eggplant in spicy garlic sauce. Their Emperor's Prawns are amazing as well! The 4 of us came to dinner on Friday night the 9th of December . There were a few tables left for 4 and we eyed one that was available. The waiter who has been there for years (I think his name is Richard) just ignored us . He asked my partner to get out of the way as he went to the podium (kitchen area) to get assistance to be seated. The other waitress ignored us as well. A group of 2 came in 5 minutes after us and she guided them to a table. Our other dining companion went to the area near the kitchen to get someone to pay attention to us and they just ignored him. A family of 4 came in and they were ignored as well and left. It's been many,many years since I have experienced such terrible service and being ignored like that. We left after 8 or so minutes as we received no acknowledgment whatsoever. We went to Alice's where even though they were busy, we were greeted right away and were seated. We got great attentive service and enjoyed the food. We asked the owner if she owned Eric's and she said her sister did and so we complained to her. She knew the waiter whom we were talking about and told us she would relay our story to her. That Richard seems way over this place and probably should move on or drastically change his attitude. We have had him before over the years and he has always been brusque and robotic and rather unfriendly. Anyway I hope the owner reads this and makes a change as we all agreed we would never come back here as we were that upset. read more

Surprised I haven't done an update, as they've been keeping me fed with yummy takeout throughout the between-times. Well, about a week or two ago, they reopened for dine-in. They've got a really good, socially-distanced setup with only 4 or 5 well-spaced tables (a 2-top and 3 or 4 4-tops) on one side of the restaurant and a path for take out on the other side. It's good to be able to order Hunan Fish again, a dish that just does not survive takeout. Pretty decent deep-fried in a crispy batter with a touch of spiciness. 3.75 stars but a guilty pleasure. Salmon special was cooked perfectly, with a generous portion of salmon pieces and some red peppers and asparagus, in a tasty sauce. 4 stars. (Have also been getting this now and again during takeout, and it's pretty consistent.) Stuff I've been getting during the p*: - Vegetable Soup, clean, fresh flavors, 4 stars - Vegetarian Mu-shu, quite yummy, purists will grumble at the use of tortillas rather than rice pancakes, but I prefer them as they're much easier to eat with, 4 stars - Broccoli or Eggplant in Spicy Garlic Sauce. Broccoli is California al dente, eggplant tender, love the sauce, 4.5 stars - Shanghai Chicken or Tofu. They toss the protein with crisped, shredded greens for a crunchy texture. Again, love the sauce. 4.5 stars. Default tofu for this dish is deep fried - I always ask for it fresh. Rounding up a star for friendly, efficient service and keeping the quality up during the crisis. read more

I was picking up the order for Doordash, and waited up to 15mins upon I got here. when I asked him the second time when will my order be ready, he yelled at me. We ordered Eric's from a delivery service and when our food arrived it was a saucy mess! I am not naming the service here because this isn't their fault. We ordered broccoli beef and Kung Pao chicken and both arrived in a paper container inside a plastic bag. All the juice/sauce from the order was in the bag and the boxes a soggy mess. Meanwhile my non saucy pot stickers came in a plastic container. This was so disappointing. With what you pay at Eric's you would expect higher quality. We had one small packet of gyoza sauce. If you are not eating the delivery at home you will be unable to eat the food without making a mess. read more

Amazing American style Chinese food, made fresh with high quality ingredients. The egg rolls are light, crispy and flaky with a nice assortment of firm traditional fillings. Fried prawns are tender with perfectly balanced breading that is not to heavy or light without being oily. The stir-fry's are always crisp and perfectly seasoned. Haven't been here in years and won't be going back any time soon. We had a reservation for Christmas Eve only to find out we didn't have a reservation. I discovered we had to put our name(s) "on a list". This after waiting 10 min. Many people waiting for tables at this point. I had to "dog the cashier" and "waitress" to ensure we in fact did get our seat next in line. The cashier kept pawning me off on the "too busy waitress" and the "waitress" kept pawning me back to the "too busy" cashier. Huge language barrier in communication. The service once seated was fast but erratic. Items came out 1 dish at a time. We'd finish one and another would arrive. No flow or consistency. We ordered drums of heaven which were no more exciting than fried chicken wings from any other fast food restaurant. Hoison String Beans - wonderful sauce but that's where the wonderful stopped. Walnut Prawns - always a favorite. They had so little mayonnaise sauce it was akin to eating just a a dry walnut with a prawn. The nuts weren't roasted or nicely glazed. Whole dish came in some dry tortilla type bowl. We were very unimpressed to say the least. Garlic chicken, just chicken w/some kind of garlic sauce and a few vegetables. Again, nothing to write home about. Spicy Smoked Pork, the best dish of all we ordered. Good flavor and interesting. Given that the food just isn't what it used to be and the whole flub up with the reservation, none of us from our party will be returning. I had a really strange time here. I met some friends here that knew the restaurant for lunch and while I waited for them I perused the menu. They had several interesting choices on the lunch side so I decided to stick with that. It's not your typical Chinese place, kind of upscale, so a $6 lunch seemed like a great deal. Everything started fine. We sat down and were given soup and hot tea. One of my friends asked for hot oil, they don't have the condiments on the tables. The soup was a very bland egg drop type thing with lots of tofu and carrots; I didn't like it. After about ten minutes, that is hours in soup time, my friend had to ask for the hot oil again. I tried a bit of oil in the soup but it really didn't improve it much. I tried to eat around the tofu as best I could but left most of it in the bowl. When they took our order I asked what the waiter recommended and he suggested the Hunan fish. One of my friends ordered a chicken broccoli and cashew dish and the other ordered an eggplant and shrimp thing that wasn't on the lunch menu. First they brought out the eggplant dish and then the chicken lunch. My friends were sharing so one took some rice off of the plate and the other one started to eat the chicken when the waiter came and took the plate away. He came back with a brand new one and put it down in front of my friend with the only explanation being "you order spicy". I was left sitting there with no food and no plate to put any of the already served food on. I told my friends to please start with out me. My friend's chicken was way too salty; we all tried it and agreed. We called the waiter over and tried to explain but he didn't understand so the owner came over and I believe he thought we were complaining that there was too much sauce. We decided to switch to pot stickers instead. Still no Hunan fish! Finally about 20 minutes after the first dish came out I got my lunch. It was very good but I thought a little soy sauce might make it even better so had to ask for it, they don't have the condiments on the tables. Finally the pot stickers came out and they were the best I've ever had. We wanted to put vinegar on them so we had to ask for it because they don't have the condiments on the tables! The food was good but the service was a catastrophe. My friends that go there a lot say it isn't usually like that so I'll give them another try and they could very well get another star out of me. One bit of advice though; ask for all of the condiments as soon as you sit down so you don't have to wait for them later. read more

Mo ho ho ho (evil Japanese anime laugh) After attending a friend's first SF foray into an art gallery opening, I decided to treat him to some tasty Chinese in my hood and we did this by simply crossing the street: the seductive and alluring smells wafting out from a well-lit corner establishment herded us straight to the door. Eric's is situated on a busy corner in Noe Valley. Granted, my living here has never once tempted me indoors (I usually stick to Chinese on Clement or just simple dim sum I pick during window shopping excursions for cheesy stocking stuffers in Chinatown) but tonight was different. I had just finished my friends art show, had an hour to kill during a viciously cold breezy evening, then it was off to the Cat Club for some dancing-to-the-80's night. Small, cozy and warm, we sat by the window which afforded us views of other Noe suburbanites waddling away in their cashmere scarves and Merrell Shoes. Since it was freezing, we ordered a small portion of their Hot and Sour soup followed closely with their Spicy Eggplant and the pork Mu Shu. "Rice?" But of course. A side of your brown rice please. I have to say, that every dish was amazing. The Hot and Sour soup had the right balance and was very savory, with crunchy strips of bamboo and slightly salty pieces of pork. I may have to request it extra hot for next time since it cooled quickly. The Spicy Eggplant was sooooooo intense in flavors that I was ladling it right on top of my brown rice, which incidentally, was one of the best bowls of brown rice in my life. It had a consistent texture and the right amount of "give" as I ate away. The eggplant was not overdone, usually the consequence of this vegetable being simmered. But in this case it absorbed the flavors of the sauce without sacrificing the texture of the eggplant. The Mu Shu was perfect and after the crepes were utilized, I continued to pick away at the julienned slices of veggies and tasty bits of pork. The beauty of most Noe Valley establishments is that you will inevitably run into someone from the surrounding blocks. As we consumed our order, several groups of people escaped the cold to take a seat in this little restaurant, smiling and waving as we took turns with salutations. The prices here are slightly more than I usually spend at Chinese restaurants, but it is probably warranted because it is Noe and add in the exorbitant and insane prices for rent here, I'm not surprised. Great food and a perfect little corner spot to keep an eye on Noe traffic, wheels and feet. Parking is a pain, so if you live a few blocks away, a nice walk will whet the appetite for your meal here. read more

When I moved to the area, someone told me that Eric's was overrated. I am really glad that I did not listen to that person and checked it out for myself. This place is very inviting, but I haven't actually ate there. I usually stop in, place an order to go and wander around the shop next door until my order is ready. The service is very fast and my food is always hot and fresh. Last night I had the Prawns with Vegetable, which had quite a few large prawns. I hate it when places give you like 4-6 in one dish. It was the perfect amount of food for dinner. I also like their appetizer sampler and won ton soup - when it's cold outside. The food has been consistently good, so I keep coming back. read more

I go to Eric's whenever I'm too lazy to cook dinner which is about once a week or so. I love this place and have been going there for such a long time. Thanks to one of my best girlfriends for introducing me to this place way back in our partying days. I have many fond memories of this place. This is where my husband and I spent many of our dinners back when I was in college. This is the place where I told my friends I was expecting a little one. This is where I took my mom to have dinner a little while after we found out she had breast cancer. She's in full remission now, thank goodness. I find so much comfort in the food here and the fast, friendly service. I think one of my fortune cookies here stated, "You will marry the person you are sitting across from" and that person happened to be my boyfriend who is now my husband. How cool is that? And how spot on right!? My last fortune cookie here stated, "You will never have to worry about a steady income", which hopefully means that I am winning the lotto. Ha! A girl can dream right? Anyway, my go to items are the honey walnut prawns and mango chicken. I can't ever go wrong with these items. My husband and little boy also love the sesame chicken. I also like their fried rice. Called to ask about outdoor seating, the man who answered the phone stated there was no outdoor seating and hung up on me. I called back to ask why I was hung up on and the man answering the phone stated he was the manager and that they had no outdoor seating. I stated I could be a customer wanting take-out and to place an order, and that I was upset with being hung up on, and he hung up on me a second time. Went here with some friends this past weekend. I liked how clean the restaurant is. There are not a lot of items on the table. Just a napkin and utensils. Items slowly start to build as your food comes in. Enjoy how fresh everything is. One thing that I noticed, is a lot of families with kids. Babies crying, kids walking around in the front near the door way. A kids potty seat in the bathroom. That takes away from the adult atmosphere, but the food makes up for it. read more
