The last couple years, I have been so disappointed by the overabundance of the same dark sauce on every dish. I've narrowed my choices down to these four dishes just to minimize the brown sauce exposure: egg fried rice (clean and simple flavor), hot and sour soup (still tastes great ans good portions), Kung pao (Will no longer order because too saucy and not enough veggies/peanuts), and pot stickers (tasty filling but too well done). Ok. NOT fresh and delicious and we paid 75.00 with tip. I've never been to Erics and we decided to get food to go. Judging from the 400+ reviews it seems like it was a great place to get Chinese food from. To be honest, I think it's the worse Chinese food I have ever ordered in San Francisco. I've been here for 40 years. Half our food was brown food. And I didn't want to eat it after three or four bites. It didn't get better. 1. Salt and Pepper tofu: Huge chunks of tofu, undercooked with no crust whatsoever. Not even a hint. Also a complete lack of salt and flavor. The garlic was chopped in half clove pieces. I appreciate fresh garlic, but it was odd. Some diced red peppers and maybe some hot ones in there that helped, but really whaaaats going on? 2. Mango Tofu: I've had my fair share of mango in food and I love it. It's succulent and sweet. It makes a dish beautiful visually as well. What we got was diced squares of mango with tasteless triangles of wrinkled tofu in bland brown sauce. Maybe a few onions and wilted peppers. Horrible. The mango had no flavour and I can only think they weren't ripe. Not spicy either. I think they forgot the hot peppers. FAIL 3. Kung Pao Tofu: Again, the bland brown sauce. Again not edible. I mean you could, but what's the point? Not fresh, peppers tasted like they were turning bad, and It actually tasted like dirt if that's possible. FAIL 4. On the upside in a way, we also had Sweet and Sour soup. It was unremarkable in every way but edible. I just can't figure out how a restaurant can serve food like this and survive. #107/2016 I wanted to like this restaurant more; perhaps I didn't order their strongest dishes? Both the sesame chicken and the Mapo tofu were incredibly salty, the latter inedible and for the first time in a long time, I sent a dish back to the kitchen. The sesame chicken could've had more chicken and fewer vegetables. The chicken was thinly julienned and sautéed with more vegetables than chicken. All the same, it had a great flavor and the chicken was tender though the dish had a lot of MSG or salt. My Mapo Tofu was beautiful with gorgeous chunks of silken tofu and oyster mushrooms but a little light on pork. But, it didn't matter because it was truly inedible, just too salty. (And I loooove salt, let that be said). The kitchen nicely offered to remake it and I agreed but a moment later, I decided to forgo it. The wait staff offered me any appetizer on the house and I first demurred then settled on the hot n sour soup and it was delicious. A "small" bowl was enormous (order accordingly). I'll definitely give this spot another chance: The decoration of the space is lovely and the beautiful, big windows give it a bright and airy feel. Well, if Eric's was good enough to be my very first Yelp review over four years ago, then it's certainly good enough to be my 1,475th. Scary, huh? Not Eric's. The fact that I've been to 1,475 places since my first visit there. Oy! I need to cook at home more often. If Julia is about eat, pray, and love, my spiritual journey must be eat, Yelp, and eat again. In the meantime, Eric's is like the Secretariat of Chinese restaurants, a thoroughbred that delivers nearly every time at the finish line... as long as Jamie W. and I stick with the items we always order. I still feel the $5.50 bowl of Wonton Soup is the best in the city because it doesn't have that oily broth you usually experience at other restaurants. The broth is clear and fresh-tasting, and the wontons are well packed with flavor. This time, we went for the $9.50 Hunan Lamb, which is leg of lamb sliced in bite-size pieces with red pepper, garlic and chopped spring onions on top (see photo). Tasty and not too spicy-hot. The other dish is unavoidable for us, the $10.25 Walnut Prawns (see photo), because who can deny mayo and honey slathering deep-fried jumbo prawns and candied walnuts? I still think they need to drop the taco shell for the original crispy noodle basket. The service is still machine-like, and I really wish they would separate the take-out side of their business from the restaurant because I get tired of people staring at me while I gorge. Stop judging me. And parking seems to be getting more painful in this part of Noe Valley. We just don't have the patience to wait for the J-Muni since the city continues to cut back on service. But Eric's is still worth an occasional tap on your bumper... after all these years. FOOD - 4 stars...signature dishes like the Walnut Prawns deliver...and the best wonton soup in town AMBIANCE - 4 stars...nice converted Victorian but cordon off the take-out customers, will ya? So this review is based off my DoorDash experience front them. I'm always craving Chinese food. Always craving for Chow Mein/Chow Fun or any fried noodle type of thing is my THANG. I'm a person who hates the Chow Mein at Panda Express so I always try to experiment all of the fried noodle dishes I come across, as possible. The name of this restaurant gives you vibes like: Hmm, it might not taste good or not authentic. I didn't look at the reviews but I wanted to just buy food ASAP to fulfill my hunger for the night. I have to say I am so in love with "Eric's Chow Mein." I'm sorry, I want to laugh at the name of the restaurant (because again, if you want Chinese food, you would probably just avoid a restaurant that has this name) the Chow Mein had to have "Eric" there as well. I'm no food critic but I love very flavorful & salty food. That fulfilled what I crave. I felt it had so many things going on, on the Chow Mein. Idk, if I'm being extra for this, but that Chow Mein made me feel as if I'm ratatouille with all that taste happening. & It doesn't taste tacky or have a hard, weird texture. I think the texture of the noodles were perfect. It costed $11.75 for that. I felt the other dishes were extremely pricey for a small amount of food. Sweet & sour pork came in those little Chinese takeout box that was made out of that thin paper, for $12.50. The 6 potstickers for $9.75, lol. Beef & Broccoli costed me $13.25 coming in the same container as the 6 potstickers, which is smaller than the container that held the Chow Mein & costed more than the Chow Mein. I think that was a bit extreme. These things did not come with rice so I ordered a small side of rice for $1.75. These other dishes were ok to me. So I just wanna make it clear to you all, that it's the Chow Mein that's winning me over, LOL. Below, I provided a screen shot of my entire order and pricing from my DoorDash. Yes, the prices are crazy and the fees are crazy & the Dash tip is unavoidably pricey, so uh, yeeeaaaah, think twice before you really order unless you're really hungry and want to experiment with new restaurants & new tastes regardless of the price?? My husband and I are very high risk with lung issues and me with a compromised immune system from cancer treatment. We were told by our doctors three weeks before shelter-in-place to stay inside and to do so for weeks after everyone else ventures back out. Eric's Restaurant has been delivering meals to us and other high risk neighbors five days a week lovingly and at no charge. Our family business is restaurant in Portland, OR (Elephants Delicatessen) and I know how much they are depending on take away to stay afloat right now, I would imagine Eric's is doing the same. I ordered take out. The Mongolian Beef was tasteless. It sat on little thin noodles that were chewy and stick to your teeth. On the menu it has a chili symbol indicating that it's spicy. NOT!!! It not only was far from being spicy it was painfully bland. Mixed mushrooms, pea pod & water chestnut veggie was flooding in a foggy mysterious slimy tasteless liquid. It was overly corn starched? Eric's Fried Rice was far from being fried. It was steamed and greasy. At home I fried it added spices to give it some reason to eat it. It claims to have chicken and beef in it but one can't tell the difference in taste of either. This was also bland and tasteless. You would never know this is a Chinese restaurant. Erics is part two of my holy trinity of easy going Chinese lunch spots in San Francisco. My three have some things in common. They are all in converted old Victorian Houses, because what could be better than eating a great, inexpensive lunch in a Victorian house in San Francisco? They all serve a light version of Chinese food, that is heavy on vegetables, and they have great lunch specials. Erics is no exception. Located in a small, corner Victorian house in Noe Valley, Eric's serves up some very good dishes including a minced chicken with fried basil dish, a super tangy sweet and sour soup, and an fantastic house eggplant dish with chicken and prawns that gets me everytime. My holy trinity consists of Erics, Alice's and Eliza's. Some of my favorite dishes at Eric's unfortunately cannot be ordered on the lunch menu, but they are generous, and as a share, one or two dishes will go far with a party of two. read more

A few days ago, I was helping my daughter, Kris A. move to the city. It was time to eat, so Kris suggested we eat take-out from Eric's. Kris and her fiance, Aaron have eaten at Eric's when they lived on Cesar Chavez and Sanchez. See Kris' review below way past my review. Surprisingly, Kris' review is a complete 180 degrees from my review and I am her Mom! This time, Kris and I ordered won ton soup and four side dishes. The won ton soup was piping hot that it melted the plastic lid from the styrofoam containers! The cost of the take-out meal was $35.00. I must admit I was rudely surprised by the won ton broth because the broth was unusually spicy and lacked the usual ingredients Cantoneese chefs use for won ton soup. I guess I am hooked since early childhood on Cantoneese cuisine rather than Szechuan. I guess I am a wimp, a cry-baby when it comes time to eat spicy foods. I just cannot seem to tolerate spicy foods which includes Thai, Indian, Mexican and Spanish cuisine. Anything hot and spicy, I run away everytime! The side dishes Kris ordered were alright-a little plain, too spicy, sparse with the ingredients-especially the meat, but here again, the side dishes did not satisfy my mild, Cantoneese palate. Nevertheless and despite my review of Eric's, the restaurant was jam-packed full of Eric's cuisine afficianados. Strangely, the interior decorum was Asian-Modernesque design, boasting a gargantuan mirror in the center of the restaurant while the front entrance is simply understated, plain, and you could never tell that this place serves Szechuan cuisine or any type of cuisine. I tried taking a picture of the front entrance of Eric's with my Nokia 6260 video camera phone but, I chose not to post it because the picture was just too oddly plain. The front door had a graphic picture of a coffee cup . . . this graphic picture struck me as quite odd. I guess the coffee cup symbolism was surely a juxtapositioning of what type of business operates behind the exterior, but plain facade. Parking was an issue for me-I had to park a block away, so Kris can order our take-out meal. I know I am not an Eric's fan due to not liking spicy foods in the first place and second, I was never a fan of Szechuan cuisine, but that's okay . . . Eric's is fully packed full of Szechuan afficianados, Eric's will not suffer from my review. I guess I will return eating at the Far Eastern Restaurant on Grant Street. Maybe afterwards, continue strolling down to my favorite place to snack when I do not feel like eating a formal dinner at the Far Eastern Restaurant . . . eating my dim sum from the Far Eastern Bakery on Grant and Commerical Street, shopping at all the stores on Grant Street and beyond the alleys. Ho-hum . . .maybe I'll eat an exotic, seafood Wor Won Ton Soup later for dinner at this restaurant on Washington and Stockton-the right side of the street from the corner. . . oh, I do not remember the name of the restaurant, but it is the traditional, old-style Cantoneese cuisine I grew to love. I have eaten here so many times with my father since I was a child and before he past away in 2001. I ordered food in advance for the Oscar's and asked my father to pick it up. For some reason they told him there was nothing to pick up - meanwhile I had the text message indicating the order was ready. I called and they questioned me about the order and then hung the phone up. I called three more times and they continued to not answer my questions and hung up. Ordering food online is the simplest thing to do, but when my gut tells me something else was up here - I trust it. If Eric's is not interested in Black people as customers then no problem - there are too many other amazing places to order from. For some reason the last two times in , Kung pao chicken , had such a diff look , the chicken pieces shaped like small shrimp ?? Mean waiter - check. No-MSG Chinese food - check (not that there is anything wrong with MSG, grew up with that stuff.) Nice, open fengshui-friendly ambience - check. You can't go wrong taking your in-laws here or that person that likes to have Chinese food but for some is afraid to go to Chinatown due to lack of parking - then this place is for you. I must say the noodles in our Chow mein must be hand-made, it was so fresh. The veggies were also fresh. I will I just ordered vegetables by itself. But really people, this place is my favorite. I ordered delivery on the recommendation of my boyfriend who loves this restaurant. I almost didn't because of the lower star rating. I'm glad I did. Rarely does food arrive with perfect temperature. Every single item was delicious. The egg rolls were filled and fat with a crispy flaky crust, not chewy like many. The spicy eggplant is filled with chicken and shrimp with a great taste (watch out for that pepper ;-) The gyoza also had a great wrap and was steamy and more inside that dumpling which is refreshing. I could not stop saying how good everything was. Large portions on the entrees so looking forward to lunch today. Also had broccoli and cashew chicken which is was great. Pre-COVID Eric's was great, but tonight my to-go order was overall "Meh" at best. The Vegetarian Egg Roll was delicious, although one piece was very burned at one end. "Burned" seemed to be the theme of the meal. The Orange Beef was unrecognizable (see photo) and literally cooked to the point it was inedible, as the burned beef had a jerky-like texture, despite the sauce.. The rice tasted overcooked and rewarmed or stored incorrectly before cooking. (Sorry that I couldn't put my finger on what the exact problem was.) Other dishes were bland, including the Walnut Prawns, although it was the one dish that was perfectly fried. I "might" consider ordering the Mu Shu again, but since I won't be going back to Eric's, that's a moot point. It's sad to see another restaurant fall during hard times. read more

Yesterday I learned that their Shanghai tofu is made with Chicken broth. I always ask if all the ingredients used are vegetarian and the servers have always nodded their heads and said yes. Based on another reviewer's post, I asked if their Shanghai tofu had chicken broth. The server did not know at first and she went back to the kitchen to ask. She came back and said that she asked the chef to make it without Chicken broth and fish sauce. The taste was drastically different. I asked the server about it and she said that Shanghai tofu gets its flavor from the chicken broth used I feel cheated after all these years of going to Erics. These guys were lying to my face.
