2.5 stars. Without a doubt, ribs and the like are things I simply have to be in the mood for, hence my frequenting barbeque joints a whopping three or so times in any given year. Enter Famous Dave's Barbeque (FDB.) In all honesty, I was wavering between FDB and Shorty's (in which case I would be supporting a local establishment) as they are both located on Monroe but decided with the former. As a caveat, this place is not meant for indecisive eaters. I personally had a hard time deciding what to order before finally settling for the Feast For 2-3 to split with my parents. Portion sizes are ample for the small appetites, like myself, but taste-wise, it's a whole different story. Items that were presented (i.e. served on a garbage can lid) are as follow... -Cornbread: absolutely moist and the ultimate comfort food if you ask me -Ribs: lip-smackingly delicious -- hands down the only thing you go to FDB for -Chicken: rotisserie style but sinewy and completely devoid of flavor -Beef brisket: extra lean and succulent -- just the way I like them -Corn on the cob: meh -Fries: fried to perfection but lacking salt -Coleslaw: I believe KFC makes better coleslaw -Smashed sweet potatoes: too buttered up for my liking Now, I've heard spectacular things about the variety of sauces -- all five of them -- but frankly speaking, I could not fully differentiate one from the other. I get my favorite BBQ from a street vendor here in Atlanta but since I was away I had to seek elsewhere. To my surprise, the BBQ here was actually pretty good. I had to ask for extra sauce which was no biggie. I got the beef brisket sandwich, potato salad, onion rings and cornbread. I wish the beef brisket would have been pulled beef brisket instead of rectangular chunks.However, It was all good but of course not as good as my favorite street vendor. The customer service here was also really good BUT some of the items we got were on their lunch menu which is hidden on the back of the menu. I feel like the girl who took our order could have told us about the hidden lunch menu. That kind of upset me.because a lot of the items we got were on the lunch menu for a lower price. This is the original Famous Dave's, now a chain, but this is the home of their award-winning food. The service was great, and the food was really good. I am not a fan of St. Louis style spareribs generally but this place made me a convert because they were meaty and not really fatty. Sure this is a chain restaurant, but I love it! I didn't realize how much I liked this place until I went to a different BBQ place. They have a family platter that is a great price (~$56 and feeds ~4-6 people) and gives you a wide variety of food! The ribs are flavorful and definitely worth it! I love their sides so much that it's always hard to choose which ones we want to get! Their mac and cheese is pretty good and has a little kick to it (they put jalapeño in it. If you're looking for mac and cheese for kids, they offer regular mac and cheese on the kids menu). The baked beans, coleslaw, and green beans compliment the ribs well! I also love that they have the sauces right there at the table so that you can slather on as much as you like! They also have a variety of different ones from sweet to spicy. As for appetizers, I'm always a fan of nachos. Here you can put pulled chicken, pork or brisket on you nachos which is different from other places. read more

You pay before you eat. No problem. Except they have a preset 20 % tip already added. A tip for what, because with covid there are no servers. So who am I tipping? If you order alcohol and want a 2nd, you have to go up and pay for it again, yes another 20 min wait in line. Not sure what managers Brilliant idea this is but it's not working. This has to be one of the best BBQ places I have been. I had BBQ chicken and brisket with green beans and fries. The meats were a lil on the dry side but there are a variety of sauces to help while adding flavor. I also had Guinness beer on tap that washed everything down with perfection! So I've learned with YELP to take reviews with a grain of salt.....u still have to judge for yourself. Well tonight I went to Famous Daves thinking I was gonna be let down. Now, mind u I wasn't blown away but I was pleasantly surprised. I had the sandwich with the brisket and sausage. The brisket was tender and moist, not half bad. The sausage was just average. The only thing i didn't care for was the pickles, they are sweet pickles not my favorite, but that's a me problem. One of my favorite things is the chips they make there, nice and crispy. They taste really good. I also had a side of the mac and cheese which was alright nothing special but not bad either. My biggest complaint was the service everything took forever, drinks, ordering, refills, just really slow and the waitress did not pay much attention to us. Overall not bad, I will go back some day and try some of them other items. read more

I ordered the full sized Bread Pudding only as carry out. Get in the restaurant and was told rudely they only sell one size and it's a half serving. So I said ok, paid the half serving. Opened it in the lot and decided to place another order because the piece was very small. Not enough for two people like the last few times I have had it in the restaurant. So I go back in and wait for one person to be helped ahead of me (with three employees, it took 10 minutes for two plates). When I finally get my order, I get to the car again and open it, it's half the size of the other. Overall, the three different young girls working the carry out were very slow and organized, the desserts were both ice cold, not warm like they should be, and the serving size was unacceptable. Not to mention the whole time I was standing in the waiting area with my 3 yr old, I heard a laundry list of cuss words coming from the workers every time they left the register to go to the galley. I used to love eating at Famous Dave's, and stopped for carry out regularly, but with service, and food like this, I won't be back. I see a lot of bad reviews. No replies from the company. Maybe they should take the customers advice before they have none. Also, I've worked in several restaurants. This wasn't a case of them being busy or even just new employees. Terrible. Wasn't aware that there was no waitress service, yet when ordering at counter a tip was expected. What am I tipping for? Nobody was waiting on us. Food didn't come out together and everyone was eating at different times. Food was just ok. A little overpriced for what you got. Service was terrible. Oh, Famous Dave's, we used to love you. Ate in regularly before the pandemic and carry out/delivery after. Thanksgiving dinner was delivered on time and was delicious. So good that we decided to order the same thing for Christmas times two! (We wanted those leftovers). Food was ordered via the website and confirmation by email was given. Then we received a phone call adjusting the pick-up time because of the restricted holiday hours. My significant other showed up 20 minutes early and they could not find the order. They were very busy so he waited 2 hours to talk to a manager (it was Christmas Eve and there was no other option for carry out). He showed her the order on his phone and she could not find it either. She credited his debit card for the amount of the holiday feast and we ended up at nearby fast food establishment. Not quite what we were looking forward to. We are confused as to how this could have happened, angry that there was no alternative for us and disappointed because one of our "go-to's" has lost a steady customer. It was surprisingly slow for 7 p.m. on a Saturday night but that was to our advantage. Service was very friendly and polite. I{ ordered the combo plate with brisket and hot link. Beans and mac and cheese were my sides. Food was brought promptly and everything tasted good. I thought the meat was a bit on the salty side but an addition of sauce took care of that. This review is in response to a situation that happened a while back but I feel it should be noted for your own safety. My truck was broken into at 2 in the afternoon at this place. I found out from a shift manager that another car had been broken into a week before and the manager was shot taking the night deposit to the bank. the manager said they had the robbers recorded but couldn't make out the license plate. I emailed the owner of this restaurant to explain the situation and to suggest he update his cameras and he emailed back and basically said he could care less about the break ins and offered no refund for the 100.00 I just spent in his restaurant. Tonight was my first time visiting any Famous Dave's. We had a party of 3 and ordered the Feast for Two. It came with 2 corn muffins, slaw, baked beans, 2 half corn cobs, what I think was a half slab of ribs, 4 pieces of brisket, and 3 different pieces of chicken, and fries. The corn muffins were sooooo good!! The slaw had some sort of odd spice to it and it wasn't my favorite. The brisket was smoked to perfection. My favorite BBQ was the sweet and zesty, and my least favorite was devil's spit (too spicy for me). There was plenty of food for the 3 of us. The only thing I think could change is the food came out just lukewarm, not hot. Our server was super friendly. I wanted to try to kahlua brownie but was STUFFED! Next time I'll save some room. Second time eating here. Both experience great. last time I had the Burnt Ends sandwich platter at lunch. Tonight at dinner, I had the Ribs and Ends Dinner. The burnt ends were awesome both times. Nice bark, very tender and a tight spicy/sweet BBQ sauce perfectly glazing the delectable morsels. The St Louis Ribs (1/3 rack - 4 bones) were perfectly done. Tender, but requiring a little pull of the teeth to come off the bone. Nice smoke ring and great smoky taste. The dry rub had just the right bit of heat, salt, sweet and tang. Soooooo good. Like eating at Bubaloos in Orlando all over again. In the 2 trips, I've experienced 5 different sides. The fries are a nice thick steak fry wedge. Very crisp and tasty on the outside and warm and almost creamy inside. Their "Wilbur Beans" are one of the best baked beans I have eaten in a long time. Sweet and slightly spicy liquor that has cooked down to a pleasant thickness. Not too dry, not a runny mess. The Firecracker Beans are a fresh, small, tender bean sauteed with onion and bacon. Not overcooked (like a lot of southern BBQ places, because that's the way southerners like them), so they have a good bite and still look green. The cole slaw is top notch. Crisp, tangy and a little sweet and creamy. The collard greens? THE TRUTH. My only complaint about the food was that the corn bread is more of a corn muffin that seemed suspiciously like it was made from Jiffy box mix. It is baked in a muffin paper. When I tried to peel the paper of the bread, the crown above the cup pulled off and the remainder in the cup crumbled to dry pieces rather than coming out. not much flavor either. I also had one of their specialty drinks. Dave's Smoky Tea. basically their version of a Long Island. Pretty strong and pretty tasty. Service-wise, "Famous Jamie" was a little scattered. She did have a ten top next to us, but she also had 2 runners working her station. She was a little inattentive. Guess the 10 top was her bet for a good tip. The runner brought our food out and proceeded to put a bowl of fries on the ten-top table as my wife remarked how we had order a full ten minutes before them. Then she noticed it was our food. She said something to the runner and kept an eagle eye to make sure no one touched her fries. Runner must not have paid attention to table numbers or the fact that she had two meals for a ten-top. One other thing. jackie had liked my Burnt Ends so much when she had tasted them the first time we were here that she ordered an appetizer of them with the side of fries as her meal. the Ends are supposed to be served with pickled red onions and some pickle and pepper chips. I told Famous Jamie not to have them put on the onions. Jackie DOES NOT like onions. (She thanked me for thinking of it) So we should have gotten Ends and Pickles. Nope. Ends with a PILE of tobacco onions! Good for me, I took them off the plate and they were great. Bad for Jackie. She doesn't like the taste of onions and there was a faint amount of that. She did not want to return them and have to wait though. But, someone freaked up. Jamie or kitchen, we don't know. Anyway, still the best BBQ in town for me so far. Deets can pound cold coals and Shorty's is just meh. I'll try some others if I hear good things, but Famous Dave's will be tough to beat. read more

This is my favorite place for Louisiana style ribs. They are so good. They have half a dozen different sauces. The restaurant has character and lots of fun signs. The service is friendly and fast. The side dishes are good. But, stay away from their bread pudding. It's too heavy and there is way too much of it. Really turned me off their desserts but I usually don't need any dessert after a half rack of their ribs. But, the ribs are the only thing I tried. They are so good I never have gotten around to trying anything else. read more

I do give them props for the multiple sauces and for interesting decor, but as far as the barbeque goes... well folks... it is definitely nothing like Texas barbeque; it's a bit of a letdown. Also, I felt very rushed when eating here, which is probably my number one pet peeve. How can that be IF you don't take call ahead or reservations? My daughter was visiting from England and wanted to try some good old American food. My first thought was Famous Dave's! She absolutely loved it! Our waitress was really friendly and knowledgeable, speedy too. The food was excellent, the ambience was great. Our waitress was so attentive, and although she was quite busy, she stopped by the table often enough to fill drinks and ask how things were. No apologies nothing..took our order....a hour later food arrives.. we were not alone waiting...people all around us complaining.... they said kitchen backed up.. really it honestly wasnt packed. Disappointing. I hadn't been to Famous Dave's in a few years, and my previous experiences were positive. Not so much this time. We were going to have a total party of 4 people. On the way there I called to see if there was any wait, and pretty much had to pry the information out of the person that answered the phone, who didn't seem happy to help. She eventually told me it was a 20-minute wait. When we got there, we did only have to wait a few minutes. So we ordered drinks--which took about 10 minutes to arrive, one at a time. (I ordered a draft beer, not the most complex drink order) The food took another solid 20-30 minutes to arrive, despite the restaurant not being very busy. I ordered the rib tips, with broccoli and mashed redskins as sides. The rib tips were dry and gristly, and most had a large bone fragment in them. I ended up spitting out at least half of each one I ate because of this. I didn't expect this from something advertised as "tips", as it looked like ribs had just been sawn into large chunks. They were also supposed to come with spiced onions and spicy pickles. No onions and 3 small, thin pickle chips, like you'd get on a hamburger. The sides were good, if unremarkable. When I complained about the rib tips, pickles, etc., our waitress did bring me some more tips, but these were the same as the previous ones--dry, chewy, gristly, and half of each one inedible. Dave's does have great BBQ sauce, so this was a help with the dryness. Service was acceptable, but the food was disappointing. My wife had the brisket, which was also somewhat dry. Prices were reasonable, but quality wasn't commensurate with what was paid. While not the worst dining experience I've ever had, I won't be returning. They may have just been having an off night, but I feel like the quality has really slipped from prior experiences. Perhaps this was why they were fairly slow for a Saturday night during what should have been a peak time. I also wanted to mention that their draft beer selection is a bit lacking. They have the basics and had two Sam Adams "seasonals" on tap. While these are fine and always drinkable, in this age of excellent and local craft beers permeating most every market, it was disappointing to not see more choices available. Good beer and BBQ just go together. Go to Smokey Bones if you're in the mood for BBQ and brew, you'll be happier. read more

Ordered a platter for 4-6 people and an order of burnt ends as we had guests over. Our order arrived, but when we started to go through it to start serving, we saw that we didn't receive the sides. No beans. No Cole slaw. No good. I called the restaurant to let them know, and a disinterested employee said that we could "come pick them up." Uh, no. We ordered delivery for a reason, and your mistake should not inconvenience me when I'm trying to feed guests. Frustrating and embarrassing after talking Famous Dave's up.
