Hands down not only one of my favorite restaurants in the city, but places in general. My friends and I have been coming for years and love the staff, food, and atmosphere so much we've hosted multiple events here with almost 100 people (and each time, everyone has loved the experience). The staff, which included John, Ivy, and Chef Li are the kindest and warmest people. I love that they make you feel like you're at their house once they get to know you. This spot is also one of the only places in lower Manhattan that are open late for a hearty, satisfying meal. The entire menu is great -- our favorites are the Chongqing Spicy Dry Fried Chicken, the Sichuan sliced white fish, the cumin beef, twice fried pork, dan dan noodles, and beef chow mein. They're great at cooking most popular Chinese dishes and their Sichuan dishes are fantastic. Please stop by whenever you're in the area looking for a meal! This is an alright Szechuan/Sichuan place that has been open for a very long time. I went here with a pretty large group which is probably the reason why I unfortunately got the wrong dish. I ordered a beef dish with chili sauce or similar and they gave me Fish Fillet With Chili Sauce which I usually do not mind if it's a good version. I think it was around $20 or so and I do not remember whether rice was included or not (I don't think so but I'm not sure.) The sauce was unfortunately gloopier than usual as I think there was a bit too much cornstarch found at other places. This also probably led it to being a bit less spicy than usual but it had a nice light sour flavor. The garlic in there was nice and the fish was decent enough quality. It's unfortunate that the fish was pretty tasty as the sauce just wasn't that good. Server was nice but inattentive when we asked for spicy sauce or chili oil. Wontons in chili oil looked like just a bowl of wontons when we got it before we saw the chili oil on the bottom. The rice never came and we had no success getting the attention of the waitress (who never came back until we had to go to the front table a few times). They removed the rice, but then added a new fee for service. By this point, we were pretty frustrated and fed up. My experience at Famous Sichuan was incredible! The food was great, my friends and i started with the sichuan dumplings with wonton soup. Both were delicious. For mains we ordered the braised spicy beef and received the chengdu crispy spicy chicken and scallion pancakes as a compliment from the chef ! I came here on a recent Saturday night for a late night dinner in the downtown area. We were looking for a sit down restaurant open late, which seems rare these days. It's refreshing to see a restaurant stay open past 10pm on the weekend, in this case, until 2am, especially below Houston Street. The restaurant was not particularly packed probably given the timing but we were hungry so we ordered the beef chow fun, some sauteed greens, some veggie dumplings, and some Szechuan lamb dish. Our food was made fairly quickly and was tasty. The Szechuan lamb dish definitely had a bit of a kick to it. The greens were good. Chow fun was good too. The portions were big. If I'm being honest I've definitely had better Chinese food and the ambiance is fine for what it is. But it's hard to find a good sit down restaurant open late these days downtown. read more

Visited Chinatown for the first time and I was looking around for an authentic Szechuan-cuisine restaurant around. I myself love spicy foods so I was excited to try any Szechuan food in Chinatown. I ordered a sprite with their Baby Shrimp with Sichuan Chili sauce Lunch Special. This dish did not disappoint! I love the waitress who attended, she was very sweet and cordial! She was also the hostess too when I came inside the restaurant too. I will say that when they serve your dish, they do serve with chopsticks without handing fork/knife at first so if you need a fork/knife, you'll have to ask the waiter/waitress for one. I wish I took photos of the restaurant inside because it had gorgeous Ancient Chinese decor. I'll definitely be coming back again when I visit New York again. read more

I usually don't write reviews, especially negative ones, but I felt I should share my experience to help others avoid the same disappointment. Unfortunately, the food here was not authentic and lacked flavor -- definitely not what I would expect from a restaurant claiming to serve Sichuan cuisine. The portions were surprisingly small, especially given the high prices, and overall it didn't feel like good value. It seems this place mainly caters to tourists, but there are so many better options nearby that offer much tastier and more genuine food for the same or even lower prices. The restaurant was quite empty when we visited, and after trying the food, I can understand why. Wow-this is a terrible restaurant. We were one of two tables when we arrived. It took me 3X to order and receive my drink. It is also very expensive for the terrible food- we ordered the oil-doused braised beef, which was so tough that I had to use my spoon AND chopsticks to cut it (my normally functional human front teeth didn't work for this); the yang chow fried rice was overly salted and had two pieces of shrimp in it, total. (See photos.) I ordered a small soup as an appetizer. It came halfway through the dinner. Both front servers were using the mirrored pillars to groom themselves and tie up their hair, which is disgusting AND against the health code. Owner is very nice and sweet. My GF and I were visiting NY and did not expect the weather to be so cold. When we couldn't take the weather anymore we decided to go into a random shop (this one). Although we weren't planning to eat, she offered us hot tea and a place to sit with a heater as well as a jacket to keep us warm at no expense at all. Better than average with huge portion sizes. I really enjoyed the eggplant as well as the Dan Dan noodles. The hot and sour soup came in a huge bowl, but was just ok. Wow! It reminded me a little of the Dr. Who police box, tiny and unassuming on the outside and opens to wonders. This place looks like an old barely surviving restaurant from the outside, and opens into a newly updated beautiful interior. There's sometimes only one person handling those seated inside... and with plenty of packing for pick up and delivery... she's often really busy. But always with a smile, and a help. Right off the bat we were offered a free bowl of soup. I had the hot and sour, and it was spicy, but not killer spicy... just right. Everyone got different main courses, and no one was disappointed. The fried dumplings were slightly more popular in our party than the steamed ones. The main dishes (I had the tripe) were all cooked just right and had a kick... but NOT a boot to the face. Came here with Pulsd deal with one appetizer and two main ($20 each) and two drinks. Saturday lunch was empty. Apart from us there was another table at noon on a weekend. So service was fast. Most of the famous Sichuan dishes are 29.90 which is very expensive compare to the Sichuan restaurants nearby. So we ended up couldn't order the ones we wanted; I guess that what the deal I got so I have no complain. But for the price in this place I would not come back without any sort of discount. I saw they have $35 for $50 on yelp deal. Instead of giving discount why not just try to lower the price. The fish fillet in chili sauce is good spicy but nothing really special. Lamb with cumin also taste very decent. The steam chicken with chili oil (口水鸡）doesn't taste like anywhere I had before, not spicy at all the with funky taste. We've been looking forward to trying authentic Szechuan cuisine for some time now, but Famous Sichuan did not live up to our expectations. The restaurant is conveniently located in central Chinatown, surrounded by many cafes, bakeries, and close to the MTA. It is a large and simple space, comfortably able to fit 100+ guests. We did not have to wait in line or need reservation. The service was prompt and the friendly waitress often checked up on us. After asking for recommendations for population dishes, we decided to get the dan dan noodles ($10), sesame chicken $(18) and beef in cumin ($19$). We did not feel that any of the dishes were particularly impressive. The sesame chicken was not different from what I'd get at my local Chinese food spot for half the price, and the beef cumin was tasty and fragrant, but doused in oil so I could not finish it. Our favorite was the dan dan noodles, which were delicate but flavorful. Ultimately, we felt that the dishes were expensive considering the flavor and quality were average. Good. Despite what the other reviews say, sometimes you need to give people in life a chance. This restaurant was good during a quiet Sunday night which originally was a little off putting considering that busy restaurants are a good sign to most people. Since the restaurant wasn't busy, our party of four definitely benefitted from the great service and the kind manager. It was my first time having both hot pot and family style meals at the same time (food overload!) There was triple flash fried chicken, dumplings with chili oil, water simmered beef in hot chili oil, double stir fried pork, then of course the hot pot meals. We had a double broth of both sichuan hot chili flavored and regular chicken broth. We also had many glass noodles to share, tofu, fish balls and the list goes on! To finish this all we ended the meal with a desert soup: egg & black sesame ball soup. The reason I'm giving this place 4 stars is because the restaurant really does care and goes the extra distance to impress, however there may have been some logistical mishaps from previous visits by other Yelpers that shines the wrong light on this restaurant. Great service and delicious hot pot -- we came here on a rainy day at around midnight and were so grateful they're open late. Very convenient how it's a restaurant that serves both Sichuan food as well as hot pot, since they use the portable hot pot burners. The meat was delicious and so were the sides, although they were out of quail eggs when we went. Tonight, I ordered dinner for my husband and I. The order was much later than expected so I called the restaurant for an ETA. The food arrived later then the late ETA. When the food arrived, I got a rude and angry message from the delivery person after he threw the food outside my door. If there was an issue, he could have waited 30 seconds for me to answer. This delivery person was from the restaurant not the delivery service, Seamless. The issue he had was the he felt I ordered too far away. This restaurant came up on my seamless feed and was in my delivery range. I am located in Greenwich Village, honestly not too far away. The service was quite lovely and prompt, but the food is... mediocre at best. I ordered the spicy dry chicken, Singapore noodles, and mapo tofu. The chicken was overwhelmingly breading and very little chicken, the noodles were still powdery from the curry powder (and somehow still wet?), and the mapo tofu was greasy. The portions were also surprisingly small given the prices (this came out to about $80, which is expensive as far as Chinatown goes). Excellent food with great flavor!! Our favorite main had to be the dan dan noodles, so much flavor but I wish it was a little spicier, it's pretty mild and I think most can handle it. Out favorite small dish was definitely the spicy pork dumplings, highly recommend as well but has a little bit more of a kick (but still very mild). I am a member of the US Military and went with four fellow service members during Fleet Week. We were in uniform and as such the owner incorrectly assumed I was not a local. The bill came and i added a tip that was undeserved as the food and service were both sub par. The bill for the five of us was $224.00 including the tip which i put on my credit card. When my statement arrived, three days later, I was charged $4724.00. I contacted my cc company , who asked for the original receipt which I didn't have, apparently they added a $4500.00 tip. I returned to the restaurant to get a copy of the receipt, the owner was extremely uncooperative and pretended you did not know English at all. She also acted very surprised to see me, as I mentioned earlier we were in uniform and she assumed I was from out of town and would be unable to follow up. I filed a police report and just today did an interview with a local media outlet that is assisting me. The story will be on the news in the next few days. Do not under ANY circumstances patronize this place as they are brazen thieves, even willing to rip off US Service members. read more
