Decided after years of driving to come by for our anniversary. We inhaled the tuna poke for appetizer. It was so delicious. I did the seared tuna steak which was pretty good. The rice was cooked with like a coconut milk I believe. I did buttermilk pie which my husband stole most of since it was so good with the fresh ice cream. The chocolate cake was a bit too rich for my liking. I wouldn't do that again. Overall the group service was decently executed for this size restaurant. I feel it typically is a hit or a miss. We only didn't get one item we ordered with our meal due to them not putting it in. We still had a decent amount. This is a neighborhood main stay. I have never not enjoyed a meal here. The pimento fritters, the oysters, the piccata, the deviled eggs. All go tos. But recently, I have fallen in LOVE with their seasonal items. The cavatelli currently is insanely delicious and the duck in the winter was my favorite duck in town. We really enjoyed this place. It's an interesting layout of a classic Heights home and an old converted service station. It's fairly small, so reservations are important. We came during Restaurant Week, and three of us took advantage of it. The Sole was excellent, as was the Bread Pudding, Chocolate Cake, and Tres Leches. My wife had the Redfish, which was also tasty. We decided to finally try Field and Tides after wanting to check it out for a while. Made reservations for a Saturday evening (highly recommend) and we're promptly seated upon arrival. As usual we started with drinks. I had the Oaxaca Old Fashioned and it was spot on. Very boozy, just the way I like cocktails. We had the beet salad as an appetizer and the beets were very fresh and earthy. As for entrees we opted for the scallops and redfish. They were both perfectly cooked and the scallops had a really nice risotto accompanying it. The redfish had some cheesy potatoes that I thought worked really well with the dish. Field and Tides was recommended on Thrillist as one of the best restaurants for seafood in HTX. Boy did the suggestion hit the jackpot. Since touching foot in Houston I've been wanting to try the seafood here and I have not had a chance to until today. I'm so happy it was here. The ambiance here is really cozy. Like smaller roadside bistro/diners I've visited in the past, this place felt familiar even though I've never been here. When we arrived, we were greeted by the host and was asked if we had reservations because they were already booked for the night; however, we were lucky enough to find a seat at the bar. The bartender, was very friendly and had great recommendations. He was a treat to speak too and his service imbecile. All of our orders were delicious. The appetizer was the fried oyster and brussel sprouts. It was savory, spicy and rich. The seafood entrees were the snapper and redfish. Both great in their own way but I'd have to say the redfish was better. The rice and beans were tasty. To finish the meal we had a made from scratch key lime pie. A great refreshing treat, that's was light, creamy and tangy. Overall, I really can't say enough great things about this place! read more

Living so close to the Gulf, I love a seafood restaurant. Field & Tides is high on the list. They have a variety of dishes to choose from, including meat options if you're so inclined. On our last visit we had the snapper (highly recommend) and the duck special. Both were delicious. During the week, this is a great lunch spot as well. For dessert, I love to partake in their espresso martinis. Perfect cap off to a delicious meal. (Side note, they participate in Houston Restaurant Weeks, a great time to try it out.) I ordered the She Crab Soup and the temperature of the soup was barely warm. There was very little crabmeat and the taste just didn't do what it needed to do for me. I also ordered the turkey sandwich (can't remember of what they call it on their menu) but it was tasty except that the bacon wasn't freshly cooked. The fries that came with my sandwich tasted fishy. I suppose they fried them in the same oil as the oysters. My husband ordered the caesar salad with fried oysters and he seemed to enjoy it as he ate all of it. Certainly NOT at a 22% level which was the amount pre-selected when the check arrived. Also do not recall another Houston restaurant adding $4 to a check for using a credit card rather than paying with cash? In fact, does anyone actually pay in cash at restaurants anymore or is this just a cash grab? Unfortunately, our entire group rated our dishes at 3 stars top. Fettuccini was dry, dry, dry & over-powered with garlic & served with the grand total of 2 shrimp. Wow. Scallops were OK, but we found NO crab in the "crab??" risotto, which was served in one big sticky lump that looked like mashed potatoes, which is a serious wakeup call for the kitchen. Duck was served cool as if the kitchen had taken it out of the refrigerator & forgotten to heat it? The poblano corn pudding sounded great, but also arrived barely room temperature & had NO distinctive flavor of ANY kind, except for the cilantro on top. I had high hopes for Field & Tides and it was a bit of a crash and burn experience. I stopped by with two friends on a Sunday evening to celebrate my friend's birthday. We had a reservation and told them that we were celebrating. We ended up seating on their patio as the weather was beautiful. From the very start, our initial waiter was a bit strange. He stomped by promptly and introduced himself. When he came back, we weren't ready to order drinks yet and asked for a couple of minutes. He then asked if we wanted him to explain the wine menu. We declined. He stormed off and didn't return as our waiter. I guess he was offended that we didn't want to hear his wine recommendations? It was nothing personal, we know what we like and just needed a little time. After an awkward start, the food made up for it. We shared an ahi tuna appetizer which delivered with Asian sauces and wontons. From there, I had the piccata fried chicken. I've had chicken piccata many of times, it's one of my favorite Italian dishes, so it was cool to try a Southern/Italian fusion dish. It was served with mashed potatoes and green beans. From there, the birthday boy received a dessert. Upon receiving the check, we were surprised to see that we were billed for the dessert. It's standard to receive a complimentary dessert at a nice restaurant when celebrating a special occasion. We asked them about it and they said it's not something they do. If that's the case, it should have been communicated to us when making the reservation. All in all, the service leaves a lot to be desired. read more

5 STARS FOR FOOD AND AMBIANCE **0 STARS FOR ASIA THE SERVER** Asia handed me the check for the table. I noticed there was a cash price ($112.59) and a non-cash price ($117.09). I had my credit card pulled out, ready to swipe. Then I ask her, "Is there a $5 extra for using my credit card?" She tells me, "No there's no charge." I tell her, "But there's an extra $5 charge." She's insisted, "No there isn't. If you add up your total, it will equal the non-cash price." I'm confused because she clearly sees me holding a credit card. I triple check the math at this point. I add total + tax and I said, "No. If I add it, it equals the cash price." She gets flustered, and starts stammering about how the cash price is a discount. BUT IT IS NOT A DISCOUNT. A discount is when you take a small amount off the ORIGINAL total, not when you ADD $5 to the total and make that the non-cash price. It felt like she assumed I was tipsy from the mimosa and wouldn't notice, so she could slide that higher total in and maybe get a bigger tip. I would have given her 20% like I usually do if she had been straight up from the get-go, but she left such a bad taste in my mouth. This is NOT ok and the customers should not have to feel cautious or duped at a restaurant. Not sure if I'd ever recommend this place to my friends after this encounter. read more
