Upon walking into Fishbone Seafood in Upland, I was greeted right away, which set a nice tone. I ordered the combo meal with fish, shrimp, and oysters along with two sides--hush puppies and fries. The listed price was $21.99, but my total ended up being about $27 after tax because of a couple of unexpected upcharges. One was a $1 charge for choosing catfish as one of my fish options, and another $1 for having my food prepared "Cajun style." I want to point out that nowhere on the menu or in the restaurant does it mention these extra charges, so definitely pay attention when your order is being rung up. I was told the wait would be around 45 minutes to an hour, but I ended up waiting closer to an hour and a half, maybe two. Luckily, once I finally got my food, it was fresh and hot, so the wait did pay off in that sense. As for the food itself: * Cajun style - honestly, not worth it. We happened to be in this shopping center for another quick pick up when I saw this spot. It doesn't matter that I had already eaten, it's hard for me to pass up soul food. I pulled up the menu and phoned in a family meal of catfish, mac and cheese and yams. We also selected cornbread/roll mix. The price for this is only $27 and more economical than just getting a lunch order. I also added a small side of greens. The fish was fried nicely and traveled well for my long drive home. It wasn't soggy or damp from oil. My mom and I enjoyed our food. Each place has their own little twang and I enjoyed their subtle twists. What a treat! It was a nice to get a taste of home here. Having grown up in the South, a visit here reminded me of the flavors and the hospitality of my youth. This place is so good! I was first introduced to the franchise years ago in LA so it's great to see that they've migrated East. The food is really good and super flavorful. I would caution that the sides were actually bordering on being considered a little salty... like maybe 3 pinches away from being salty... still good nonetheless. With side salad and yes...steamed rice. To my surprised I received a couple hush puppies. Never fond of them, but this was great. Nicely coated, not too grainy. The shrimp were great size and fried to perfection. The filet of sole was amazing! One of the best fried fish I've eaten. Lightly breaded, fried long enough to be crispy but not burnt. Fish was delicious and to top it off, I received 4 filets! Over all, this place gets my rare 5 star. I was impressed with the food and will definitely put on my return list. I had four pieces of red snapper and lots of shrimp. My sides were seasoned crinkle cut fries and yams( I love yams!!). The meal also included a Hawaiian roll and two hush puppies. I ordered a drink and cake dessert so the total was over $40 then add a tip. They gave me a little cup of tartar sauce and then wanted me to pay 67 cents for an extra cup. So petty. I can see why the spot was empty when I arrived however it was 3:30 on a Friday. The food was a little salty but for the value what I consider a fast food spot not worth the price at all. The place was very clean though. I hear quality has been going down since a pretty successful opening ! I'll be surprised if they're open this time next year. This location serves Mac n cheese, Greens, Yams and let me tell you, For a Black establishment I was highly disappointed. The Mac n cheese is exactly that, macaroni noodles and cheese ( no cheese sauce, no seasoning, nothing that gives it moisture). The Greens were just ok. Kinda bland, the hush puppies were great! So, will I go back? Of course... I went for the fish...not the sides, same as when I want good barbecue knowing sides are probably not gonna be that good. My mom went on Saturday and ordered whitening and it was excellent no bones or black skin and well seasoned. I did not eat any of it this time I threw it down the sink I was so upset. My mom tried a piece and threw the rest away It was not seasoned, & dry with bones and we were given the wrong fish. On top of everything the family meal was more like a two person meal with the amount of Mac and cheese and red beans we were given. I called earlier after receiving the food & no answer. The price was reasonable, food was ample, and everything was very fresh. My brother had the shrimp and sole combo. The thing I enjoyed most were the sides. They serve home cooked sides. I had the yams and green they were both excellent. You can also choose potato salad, red beans and rice, or macaroni and cheese. The service here is excellent the owners and staff are super friendly and welcoming. If you like delicious soul cooking you must have give this restaurant a try!
