Service interactions are pleasant and nothing was amiss during our munch with plentiful water refills and things smoothly in order otherwise. QR Code ordering system makes it pretty straightforward to get up to speed on their simple menu. Basically you got appetizers/sides, rice bowls, cold & hot soup noodles. Noodles have the option for a slightly thicker variant (but similar chewiness). All-in-all, their noodle bowls are excellent, buoyed by that seriously out-of-this-world tenderness in the beef. Yummy beef noodle soup place with large portions of meat! The beef falls apart so easily with just your chopsticks, the beef broth is on the lighter bone broth side but the taste is amplified with the chili crunch side! The minced pork over rice was so tender and soft I barely had to bite down on the pork! They give you a large portion in a bowl of rice with pickled vegetables too! Service was fast, there's a QR code to order but heads up the signal is sometimes a little slow so you may have to refresh the page to order. We were excited to try Flaming Ox since we like shopping at the Taiwanese grocery store next door. The service was nice and the restaurant was clean, but in all honesty, we weren't super impressed with the food. We ordered two of the traditional beef noodle soups and one order of the blanched greens with shallot. The beef noodle soup had a bit of a sweet aftertaste to me, which I didn't love. The blanched greens didn't have a ton of flavor and the fried shallots on top stuck to my teeth as I chewed. I didn't really feel like the blanched greens were worth $7, it's probably not too hard to make something similar at home yourself. There were plenty of people there who seemed like they were enjoying Flaming Ox, so maybe their food just wasn't my cup of tea. read more

It's not too big inside, but food is served pretty quickly so people were dining and leaving at a decent rate. We ordered the traditional beef noodle soup, the mala beef noodle soup, the fried pork chop, and the green onion pancake. You can pick between thin or thick noodles. Both are made fresh and were at perfect texture. Both broths are also light compared to other beef noodle soups. The mala broth has a nice spice to it, and I found it to be less numbing than other mala broths. The beef on both of these dishes were delectable, fall off the bone, and delicious. The fried pork chop didn't have as crispy of an exterior as I would have anticipated. Not dry but not juicy either. The green onion pancakes had a good crisp on the outside but I found them to be on the doughier side and not as flaky. It comes with an interesting sauce on the side, which wasn't bad. I got the dry mala beef noodles with thin noodles. The dish was pretty well balanced, not too oily and pretty flavorful from the mala sauce. The noodles were good but nothing special, however I thought the beef and beef tendon were very good. They give such thick slices of beef and the meat is super tender and delicious. This is an unusual restaurant - unusual for me, that is - due to its blending of traditional with a modern flair. Warning, if you do not like Chinese Five-Spice seasoning, stay away. But if you love that traditional spice, this place is for you. We had the Traditional Beef Noodle Soup (outstanding flavor, and HUGE steak-sized pieces of beef!) and the Fried Pork Chop Rice, which came with pickled vegetables (a bit sweet for my tastes) and pickled radish leaves. The pork chop was cut into thick chunks that were coated with sauce and fried - crispy on the outside, tender on the inside. But the taste was disappointingly average - nothing about it stood out. But then, I discovered the dipping sauce! I dipped the bland pieces of meat into the sauce, and lo, and behold - I was hit with a burst of flavor! The sauce brought out the pork flavor and the seasoning was terrific! I guess that this makes sense, as if the seasoning was added during the frying, the meat the sauce would be as fresh and flavorful. As a dipping sauce, none of the seasonings get diluted and flavor enhancement is high. Good job here! I am not a fan of Chinese Five-Spice, so for me, the enjoyment could not be more. The price point was spot on and their choices of small pick foods was great - $6-$8.50. While I was there they had a happy hour which was $2 off my bowl of beef noodles. I started off with the chilled pickled cucumber and a jasmine ice tea. I went for the traditional beef noodle soup which the soup base was mild spicy and had quarter pound of three nice tender chunks of beef. The noodles were cooked perfectly. My server was good and even offered some advice on top things in the menu. The interior was very clean with an open kitchen where you can see them preparing the dishes. It wasn't too busy and we got seated right away. There's a QR code for you to scan at the table, so it was pretty easy to order the food off your phone. My husband got the traditional beef noodle, I got the Mala beef noodle soup, and we also got the fried pork chop as an appetizer. Both beef noodle soup were very delicious in their own way! We both ordered the thick noodles, which had an al dente texture we enjoyed, but others may not. The meat was soooo tender and delicious. Literally would just break apart the moment you picked up the beef. There is a chili oil that you get on the side with the traditional beef noodle. This is such a game changer when you add it to the broth. It has so much flavor! I asked if they sold it for take out. It's currently not available but could be for sale soon! There was a plastic tray that fit on top of the bowl. with the noodles and toppings that kept them out of the soup. . It was crispy on the outside, tender inside, and authentically seasoned. The food came out quickly, which makes this a great spot for a fast lunch. We visited on a Friday night and we luckily found parking in the busy plaza. For the appetizer we ordered the popcorn chicken which was well-seasoned and tender and it came with a sweet and sour sauce which was unique and yummy. I ordered the beef noodle soup with thick noodles and bone broth base (non-spicy). At first the beef broth was too hot so I ate the popcorn chicken in the meantime but once it cooled down it was delicious. The thick noodles were amazing, I loved how thick and flavorful they were! Lukewarm service ok food. When we asked if we can pay extra for have them pour over the braised pork over noodles (instead of rice) we got a flat no we don't do that. We end up getting a noodle dish and the braised pork rice dish so we can pour over the braised pork over the noodles. The server appears to be a young part timer who is waiting to clock out- not sure this is entirely her fault (looking at you management) Food is decent nothing to write home about though -will not return there is plenty of Taiwanese options in the Bay Area that will leave you more impressed. read more
