A mom and pop shop that delivers tasty soup at a great price. I visited here one night and I wanted Wor Won Ton soup. The person I came with did not know what a Wor Won Ton was, so it was a first for her. So I figured for $5.95 plus some change to add the noodles. The won tons were tasty but the soup lacked some of the seafood creatures I was accustomed too (squid with tentacles, crab, pieces of fish). Nice broth, vegtables, flavor plus no MSG. It was a smaller bowl but for the price I'm not complaining. I was cold, hungry and a cup of noodles just would not do. I looked at the menu and it was extensive, but I was interested in the soup so that was my focus. Parking is limited so be prepared to look for parking. read more

I am a HUGE fan of Flower Lounge, but dare I say it's definitely more because of the service than the food. First off, let me clear the air by saying that I tend to gravitate away from Chinese food. It's because I've grown up eating all the time and it's hard for me to enjoy it when I go out and get Chinese food because most places make it very greasy. That said, my friend wanted to celebrate Lunar New Year's early and so we decided on Flour Lounge. It had good reviews so why not right? The one thing you want to know about this place is that it's generally just run by two women - they're very sweet, but still two women. And so the service was a bit slow since there was a lack of workers in the restaurant. However, they were nevertheless very kind to us. We ordered the assorted special lo mien, sizzling cod platter, and ginger and green onion beef, obviously in cantonese. I think the waitress really liked us because she kept checking on us and talked to us in Chinese. It might have been because we opted not to simply order the dinner special (though cheap) like everyone else and conversed with her in Chinese, but she was super nice to us. Food came out faster than we were seated and it wasnt too bad. The noodles reminded me of home, the ginger beef was very tender and flavorful, and the cod was definitely a good steal. However, again I'm not the biggest fan of Chinese food so I can't say too much. What I can say is that the service was definitely amazing and the high point of my adventure to this part of Oakland. So 1st of all the lady at the counter is nice however their food labels are a little wrong! We ordered some shrimp wonton soup but the inside of the dumpling was a mix of pork and shrimp but we don't eat pork... I was quite disappointed! Food is good, but serving the food is slow. Not really worth the wait. It's nothing special, just an ordinary Chinese restaurant just a bit more pricey. This place is clean and organized. We had just moved our office from Berkeley to Oakland and after work one evening, we decided to find some place to eat. We happened upon Flower Lounge. What a pleasant surprise! We met the owner May who was delightful. She had a great sense of humor and got us a booth nearby. We didn't really know too much about the menu, so May was very helpful in lots of suggestions. I decided on the Mongolian beef combination which included a large bowl of either wonton or hot and sour soup as well as a trio of egg rolls, cream cheese pocket and wontons. As well, she give us a large pot of green tea before dinner. Needless to say, the food and service was out of this world. The prices were low and the service and atmosphere are high. Jam packed w/Chinese folk. Good for being not in Chinatown. Good service too. If you're getting take out, I would call ahead, the kitchen gets backed up, I wound up waiting for 20 minutes. I really liked complimentary soup with winter melon and pork bones. The giant pea sprouts were cooked perfectly in garlic and the rice noodles weren't overly lacquered in oil. A great local Chinese food discovery with friendly staff! This was our first time ordering take out at this restaurant. We ordered Hong style tomato beef chow mein which my daughter absolutely loved; chicken chow mein which was packed with flavor and generous portion for the cost; and seafood eggplant, which wasn't the best I have had but maybe because of the cuttlefish? I would love be to try their kung Pao beef next time. Will definitely go back and try their other dishes. read more

All in all, pretty solid take out. I don't really have a favorite Chinese take out place in Oakland, but I will probably come back here. I got a huge pallet of food for $25: egg drop soup, beef and broccoli, steamed rice, and their house special fried rice (which had chicken, beef, shrimp, and pork), and a soda. Egg drop soup: I was looking forward to this the most, but it was the most disappointing. It had great veggies in it, but the broth was so bland. I salvaged it with some soy sauce, but definitely not my favorite. Broccoli beef: Pretty good. Lots of broccoli and plenty of beef that was pretty tender. The dish was not over cooked, which I really liked. House special fried rice: Really good. Only $.50 more than chicken OR beef fried rice and you get four kinds of meat. The veggies and rice were really tasty too. This was probably my favorite dish of the night. Always the best! What a great neighborhood spot. We like to get the eggplant, the green beans, the chow mein, various fried chicken dishes, it's all pretty great. We always do takeout, but it's never very busy inside. The owner is a riot, and always packs everything with such great care and a TON of fortune cookies.
