We had reservations on the patio at 5:45, but found one side of the table having to stare into the sun, so we moved inside. This restaurant is what turned me into a believer that Phoenix has an amazing food scene. I don't know how this region got the reputation that it is the land of bland food and chain restaurants. I took my family here a few weeks ago and although the menu was fresh and creative, the execution of the dishes were unsatisfactory. Maybe it was the high expectations, considering the James Beard recognition. However, we did enjoy our evening nonetheless. The service was stellar. Where does the FnB staff eat when they visit New York City during their summer break? A waitress whispered some names: Via Carota; Dirt Candy; Huertas; Xixa--if you know New York restaurants, you'll be smiling and nodding, because these restaurants share an ethos. None is inexpensive, but none is 11 Madison Park, either. Each is distinct, but each offers meals to nearby locals and yet meals that also draw tourists. They focus on quality ingredients and superior execution without one needing to work at Google to afford the bill. Looking to Via Carota and Dirt Candy for inspiration makes sense. Though there is artistry at FnB, the food is meant to be eaten, not displayed; do not be dismayed by the idea that "artistry" must somehow mean insubstantial foams and other effete concoctions that are not nourishing. We didn't come because we worried wrongly about signifiers of foams and such. Instead, we find that about 1.5 items per person from the starters and small plates is about right; 2.0 work too. Bring the leftovers home. Expect whatever looks good that day or week to be on the menu, which keeps the experience fresh. Favorites disappear--I loved the charred sweet potatoes with a spicy chili sauce and some kind of yogurt, or sour cream, or cream, or creme fraise, but they were gone, replaced by a shockingly wonderful cantaloupe cold soup, and then by a stuffed summer squash. Texture, flavor, and surprise are well-balanced here. During the week, takeout is an option. I theorize that most food in Scottsdale targets low sophistication bridal parties, winter business travelers, and other passers-through who want something better than whatever they can get at home. Economies of scale and specialization imply that, the more dense and populous the city, the more interesting the food. Scottsdale, unfortunately, has many places that locals will say are good, only for that judgment to tell us about the quality of the locals' judgment. FnB is the exception, the place that really is that good. It's accessible while striving for mastery. FnB is influenced by Via Carota, and I wish more of Phoenix were influenced by FnB. Some might be--First and Last in downtown Phoenix, for example--but too few are. It's a shame. We should demand better. FnB is the "better" we all ought to seek. Were FnB competing with Meadowsweet in Brooklyn, I'd still seek it out. Let us reward quality. read more

I had dinner at FnB last night with two friends and can honestly say that it was on of the most delicious and enjoyable meals I have ever had. The restaurant was billed as a "top ten" in this area and it did not disappoint. The menu which changes regularly was filled with creative vegetarian as well as chicken and beef choices. The service was warm and friendly. We were having such a great time sampling several of the small plates that the chef actually came by our table to introduce herself. The server suggested we try a wine produced nearby in the high country by a winery called Los Milic and enjoyed a wonderful cab. This is simply review for the attitude of this place. Showed up with my girlfriend from out of town wanting to maybe sit at the bar and see if we could have some dinner. I absolutely respect a busy pace and reservations. I have no problem being told you are busy or can't accommodate. But the attitude of this place was unreal. We stood 10 minutes before someone even thought about talking to us. When they did we were greeted with an extremely rude "uhhhh can we help you". Maybe it's the fact that we were younger than everyone dining and they assumed we can't afford it... but for real simple customer service is not hard. We came to FnB for dinner as a large group on a Wednesday night. The place was busy but not completely packed. I liked the setup of the place - the different dining rooms helped to give a more private feel and keep the noise levels lower. The food was fantastic. The hardcore carnivores and picky vegan/vegetarians all found multiple dishes that they enjoyed and wanted to come back for. We ordered family style so that we could try pretty much the entire menu. My favorites were the grilled peaches and corn, halibut entree, and the vegan eggplant tart. While we did not venture into the extensive wine menu, we did have cocktails (they had four options on the menu). I was really excited to go, in town for work, other reviews are strong. I had the spicy broccoli dish and turkey meatballs with squash and tomatoes. The broccoli dish wasn't very exciting, it felt like something a decent amateur cook could make at home. The turkey meatball dish was somehow less than the sum of its parts - I like the major ingredients individually, there were some decent flavors, but the dish was underwhelming and felt a little disjointed. It could be the case that I just ordered poorly. The bartender wasn't much help, said the menu changed too frequently to make recommendations or to give advice. This restaurant didn't do it for me. The various awards are incongruous with the banal food. I had the melon and prosciutto and the melon was watery and flavorless. Waited for weeks to get a reservation and was really excited to try the menu being the foodie that I am. I did not like that you have to pay $40 to make a reservation. I assumed the $40 would be deducted from the bill but it was not. Then upon entering the FnB you must show proof of being vaccinated and a photo ID. I thought this was a huge turn off and a bit aggressive. I love their AZ wine selection and the staff was exceptional. The squash and lamb were really good. However, the pasta dish was decent but nothing to rave about and I would not order it again. The NZ wreckfish was just not good. I wanted to like it and I kept trying another bite. We visited FnB on a Tuesday night and it appeared that every table was taken during our entire visit. They are only offering outdoor patio seating to allow for social distancing and clean air flow. Every table had a heater next to it in case it gets a little cold during your visit. Despite all the covid precautions, the visit was definitely very nice and comfortable. The wait staff is nice and attentive. Everyone is wearing a mask unless actively eating or drinking. The food here is amazing! We got the spicy broccoli, pappardelle, wreck fish, butternut squash, and swordfish tartine. It was all so flavorful and delicious! What a fantastic evening I had at FnB. This restaurant had been on my list for a while due to acclaimed chef Charleen Badman. Starting with the ease of making a reservation online, to the wonderful ambience when we first walked in, FnB delivered on all aspects of our dining experience. The waitstaff is kind and helpful, often working together to service our table. They were clearly knowledgeable of the menu, which helped as my party was comprised of lacto-ovo vegetarians. Most of the menu, in fact, was vegetarian so it was difficult for us to make our decisions! The staff also mentioned which items were vegan, or could be made vegan. Since the menu is seasonal, I won't dwell upon the food other than to mention that it was all superb. Each dish was delectable, from familiar dishes like falafel to new ones like apple sharlotka. Together, my boyfriend and I enjoyed four vegetable dishes and two desserts and spent about $85 with tip (and a coffee with dessert!). Weekend away with friends brought 4 of us here for dinner. We tend to group order for the table and this is a good place for sharing. We split a bunch of smaller plates that included a local melon salad, a tasted tomato dish, corn esquites, as well as some others I can't recall, and then ordered the pork chop as a main. Finished things off with a sticky date cake. Nothing was bad. But nothing was memorably good either. Dessert took ages to come out, so much so that we asked them to cancel it (came out after that - but at least they didn't charge us for it) and it was decent, but not worth waiting for, and the wait was long enough that we were getting cranky sitting there. Although the food is all pretty meh, this place has a pretty extensive list of wine originating in Arizona. We ended up with a bottle of Arizona red that we found surprisingly good considering the climate of the state. If they did an Arizona wine tasting menu (like 3 different pours for $20 or whatever made sense financially) I would totally give that a try. The service was also not great, the place isn't that big, yet if felt hard to find someone when you wanted/needed them. We were brought a dessert menu, and then the check, without being asked if we wanted dessert. We wanted dessert (see above - error in judgement). But then getting the check and getting them to take our card the second time around took ages again. The tables are quite close together - like almost nyc close together - which doesn't bother me, but is worth mentioning since you'll definitely hear the conversations of those next to you. Also, this place is LOUD. Not like playing music too loud loud, but like nothing to temper down all the ambient sound of people talking loud. I felt like they really needed to throw some sound absorbing panels or tapestry or something on the walls/ceiling. Once the place cleared out (while we were waiting on dessert) we realized that it basically echoed in there. Overall I won't be returning, even if I'm back in town for a visit. read more

We enjoyed some fresh bread and olive oil / balsamic - on the house - with our drinks. Service was top notch. We ordered the mussels, heirloom cauliflower & grilled broccoli and enjoyed the sunset while seated on their courtyard patio. They say you eat with your eyes first, and this could not be more true when it came to the food here. Vibrant colours and mélange of textures were shown with each dish. You could taste the freshness of all the ingredients used, really driving their farm-to-table image. I loved the heirloom cauliflowers! Ive been excited to dine at FnB since I moved to Arizona last spring and finally got a chance to the other night. Unfortunately, I walked away wishing for more after a meh dining experience. My wife and I ordered drinks, Radishes, Broccoli, Squash, Chicken, and dessert. We weren't blown away by any of the dishes but the Squash. Everything else just tasted like vegetables you could make at home. The Chicken dish was good but wasn't $30 good. It was on the dry side and really didn't have anything exceptional about it. Now on to the review of the restaurant: My first impression was very good until I decided to sit at the bar. Now, maybe I was expecting too much but the barkeep did not appear to be as welcoming as the hostess/server. In fact, she did not set a glass of water in front of me until I finally looked her straight in the eye. Maybe I'm mistaken but from what I've been told bartenders are usually more talkative. Unfortunately, the bartender tonight was more interested in chatting with her buddies than making conversation with me. There was no attempt made to converse. I really wish I had not given up my table. If I do decide to treat myself again at FnB i think I will dine at a table instead. At least at a table I will have plenty of room to spread out and read my book or magazine. The vittles for this season's menu were very good but nothing to write home about. The current menu offerings are posted online so I think if I do decide to go back I will check the menu first and see if anything catches my eye. But, I will not make a special drive out there like I did this evening. I really wish I had just took a 3 minute drive to one of the local restaurants near me instead of making a 30 minute trek and being disappointed. Great innovative lunch. Had a carmelized grilled butternut squash sandwich with arugula, bacon slices, and burrata. The waitress kindly substituted goat cheese for burrata. An excellent amount of crunch paired with the sweet and salty squash and bacon was perfection. The bread could have been grilled a bit more. I am so disappointed in my experience at FnB. It started off poorly with the service. It took about 5 minutes for a waiter to come over and acknowledge us (which should never be the case). After asking for another minute to look at drinks, it took about another 5 minutes to order drinks (thus, we ordered food at the same time). After ordering, everything was fine. All the servers were engaged in a timely manner with dishes, refills, etc. The food is truly the disappointment. As I sit here writing, I am trying to recall the good dishes we had, but I can't remember them. I know we ordered four dishes, but I only remember two... because they were bad. One dish was the Nashville HOT Chicken Livers. For some, this may sound disgusting. I like chicken livers. I also love hot chicken, but OMG it was HOT. It was too hot where you couldn't taste any flavor. It was so hot it caused us to chug multiple glasses of water. One server noticed this and as she filled our water told us how much she loved hot food, but won't even eat this dish. Yes, it says HOT on the menu which should tell someone it is hot, but my fiance has had Nashville hot chicken (e.g. Hattie B's) and this was too hot. Moreover, the constant chugging of water completely destroyed our appetite. The other dish that was a disaster was the Shishito peppers. Personally, I feel Shishito peppers are overdone like how kale eventually was overdone, but they are good. You fry them up and season them. Simple. We decided to try their version because it was different. It was mixed with potatoes and an Aioli sauce. Not to be mean, but it was horrible. Basically, someone dumped a poorly flavored mayonnaise on the plate and poured the veg on top. We had one bite each and were done with the dish and dinner. I know they can change up the menu, which I love, but unfortunately these two dishes missed the mark. Another thing that truly irked me - I love to ask servers their favorite dishes. They know best! Nothing bothers me more then when they say everything on the menu is great! Well, I experienced a worse answer. The server said he doesn't ever suggest his favorites. FnB is a charming little eatery in the downtown Scottsdale area. The menu offers some unique combinations of food and beautifully presented dishes. We ate here for lunch and had the grilled trout rillettes. They were served on a wooden board with a lovely selection of grilled ciabatta(?) bread, regular and sweet potato chips, arugula, fresh tarragon, pickled egg, pickled beets and a creamy horseradish sauce. The rillettes were well sealed by the layer of (duck?) fat on top of the small glass jar and a treasure trove of trout with cream and herbs lay underneath. The taste was delicate and spread very nicely on the bread. While I loved the horseradish sauce it overpowered the mild taste of the rillette so I had to put the barest amount of it on the bread. As for the other elements on the wooden board, I enjoyed the peppery arugula, fresh aromatic tarragon and vinegary sweet pickled beets. The pickled egg was a beautiful cheery magenta red color. I couldn't taste a lot of pickled flavor in it though and the egg had a slight greyish tinge around the yolk. Unfortunately some of the potato chips were stale and chewy while others were light and crisp. After running out of grilled bread I actually spread the rest of the rillettes on a potato chip to discover I preferred this combination over the bread due to the contrast of crispiness and light saltiness with the creamy rillette. This is our first meal at FnB since pre COVId. It was just as good as we remembered! Service was impeccable and every item we shared was impressive and delicious. Strawberry salad was fresh and interesting with textures and color. Heirloom tomato salad was a fabulous surprise--so light and garlic crouton dusting brought it home. Creole shrimp was complex and sauce was perfect to sop up the bread. I LOVED spaghetti squash dish and hubby raved about the ground lamb dish (the hummus as the base was so creamy and perfect).
