Threw back an old fashioned or two while at FF last week. I'm pretty sure I could have made it three, but the service outside was just a bit on the slow side. I appreciate a bar that utilizes a large block ice cube in their whiskey creations. The lemon twist was unexpected, as usually an old fashioned features an orange twist I didn't hate the change. We came here for brunch and overall it was ok. Although the staff was friendly, they didn't really seem on top of things. First of all, our food took over 30 minutes to order. Also, we didn't have utensils and basically had to ask for them. My utensils were super hot, probably because they had just come out of the dishwasher. I also had to separately ask for a spoon since I got a yogurt bowl. The food itself was very mediocre. We got a yogurt bowl, eggs and toast, and chicken and waffles. The yogurt bowl was ok, but could have at least been chilled. I also got a blueberry muffin, and although fresh out the oven, could have been better. The eggs were ok, but the bread had an odd texture. It felt like it was reheated in the microwave or something. Came back for another visit! We came back specifically to see Evalese. We went here a few months ago- I was in town visiting my sister- and she was our server and I swore when we came back I would try something new and come back to see her. The service was just as great as our last visit and the food was just as good. I got the southwestern scramble and it was delicious. Stopped in to have some breakfast this morning. Great environment and friendly staff. I ordered the roasted veggie and cheese scramble with a side of cheesy grits and fruit. It was beautifully presented and the scramble was quite delicious. The only reason I could not give 5 stars was because the grits were not even close to the right consistency, but it's a southern dish and we are in the north, so I'm not mad about it. It was fairly busy on a Saturday night and we didn't have reservations but we were able to sit at the bar right away. The strawberry ginger margaritas were very refreshing on a hot summer night and a great start to the meal. The honey fried chicken definitely stole the show - perfectly deboned and fried chicken, paired with Parmesan cheese grits, green potatoes, and tomatoes. The waitress was very nice and friendly. I ordered the 6 mini cheeseburgers with fries. The burgers were on the dry side. The mini buns were toasted to the point they were a little hard, so I just took the bread off and just ate the meat. The only thing I enjoyed was the French fries. read more

This place was so good for dinner went back a few days later for brunch. We had the wings, the deviled eggs, the burger, and the ravioli and chicken cutlet. The ravioli dish was the best followed closely by the burger. Both had a ton of flavor and we enjoyed both. The wings were very tasty. I've had better deviled eggs, but I still liked them. We got the combo some original and some with ham. For brunch we got the breakfast tacos and the French toast sticks and we devoured them both. Very good meal. This place was kind of all over the map. Service was up and down. We were first seated in the back corner. Some guy was coughing up a damn lung and we were grossed out. So we asked to be moved. Server nicely obliged. But then I think she kinda forgot about us as she told us to wait up front by the hostess' desk. Then when I reminded her, she had to almost beg the hostess to give us another table. This ticked me off. Finally sat down. Got the food. Belgian waffle with banana compote. Except there was a hair in it!! Seriously. Got that sent back and got another one. You would think they would offer to comp because of the disgusting hair. No such courtesy was extended. Really disappointed with that. Saving grace was that the rest of the meal was very good. Our second server was Anthony. Very nice kid, very helpful. Fun to talk to. Helped save the night. I decided to have dinner with the family at Founding Farmers after reading the reviews. First of all it's best to make a reservation or you could be waiting awhile +/- 30 minutes. The decor of the restaurant is gorgeous and the lay out flows very well throughout the restaurant. They do have outdoor seating as well as bar seating for dining. The customer service from beginning to end was very good and waiter did a great job taking care of us. I ordered the Chicken and Waffle which seemed to be the best option considering that everything is "made from scratch" and they say their fried chicken is award winning. Let me get straight to the point, the chicken was good, tasty and crispy but it didn't have the soul food taste to it as you'd expect with chicken and waffles. I was disappointed but not every chicken and waffle dish is going to be great. The macaroni and cheese as a side was good but not delicious, the green beans were bland and I needed to add salt and more salt to give it some semblance of flavor. Again, don't expect this to be a soul food experience and if that's not what you're looking for then you'll be fine. My daughter had the cheeseburger and she said it was good but she wasn't impressed. My wife had the baby cheeseburgers and she said they were good. I went to the Thanksgiving lunch and it was a total disappointment. They promised a bunch of sides but offered so little of each it was like a tasting menu. The service was ok but I felt rushed like I was going through a car wash. It felt like they had the plates sitting in the back ready to bring them out. The butternut squash soup was too sweet and so was the sauce. The turkey was ok but I had to ask for extra gravy because it was dry. All in all a total disappointment. I've been to the location in Tysons so I was very excited to be at the Foggy Bottom location. We made an indoor reservation 7:45 and waited until 8:05 to get seated. The food is delicious and good portioned like always, cannot criticize that, but the service was lackluster. A couple of ladies who also had a reservation decided to leave because they were kept waiting, and the hostess gave us the reason that tables are taking their time with the check. This place held up to the hype. Service was great and during the 4+ visits I made we never had any issues. The place is packed and busy and still amazingly clean and ready to party! We went for dinner then returned the next morning for breakfast! it made an impression on us for sure. When i returned to DC a month later I had to come back! so i did a few times. They have some other locations and they offer some cool stuff, The location near the Carnegie library does a Buffay on the weekend. I went check it out. It looks really good but I didn't stay because I didn't want to pay the amount as I wasn't that hungry and felt it would've been a waste. I tried the corn chicken salad, which was surprisingly delicious despite my initial skepticism about there being popcorn instead of croutons on top. The 2 salad dressings, a champagne vinaigrette and buttermilk ranch, paired perfectly. The cornbread starter is a must-try and ideal for sharing with the table; even with six of us, one serving was sufficient. The meatloaf was a bit dry, and the sauces were a tad too rich for my liking. The sides options good, particularly the green beans. Despite visiting on a Wednesday lunchtime, the place was bustling, and we needed a reservation for a noon lunch. To avoid a 30 minute wait, I lucked up on an empty seat at the bar. Sat in the middle of some real cool peeps who were visiting Washington like me. So, it was almost 11am....Was planning to get Founding Farmers famous pancakes, but got the BBQ Pork Ribs with French fries and coleslaw instead; and a small skillet of cornbread. BIG MISTAKE!!! French fries were almost cold, and not very tasty, didn't look or tasted fresh, coleslaw was bland/lacked flavor; and the ribs were two thick and meaty/weren't sauced well (had to ask for extra sauce); and the cornbread tasted better once it cooled, but nothing special about it either. The portion sizes were commendable. However, I was super hungry...So, I ate as much of my food as I could. Next time I will order the pancakes like I had planned. The cool couple sitting next to me shared their pancakes with me...OMG...They were beyond DELICIOUS! I wholeheartedly recommend this restaurant! Everything about this experience was top-notch. Our server was attentive and knowledgeable about what was gluten-free. He worked with me to find a suitable side substitution for my son since many of the dishes come with green beans, which he won't eat. He never made me feel like my requests were too much. I requested for my son's meal to come first while the rest of us enjoyed an appetizer. Everything was delivered as requested. The food and drinks were all delicious from start to finish. We walked right in and were given a table right at lunch time, just as promised. Alex our server was fantastic, so helpful answering all our questions and filling my water bottle for me. The food was a delicious experience! The waffles were so light and crunchy, the chicken was so crispy and tasty. Best waffles I've ever had, truly. The salad.....was a symphony of flavors and textures. Tomatoes, grapes, Kalamata olives, date halves and pecorino cheese shavings all together in the lettuce, with corn bread and biscuit croutons? Yes please! The plates I saw passing by our table made me want to come back for more.? This was a recommendation from a delightful DC regular I met on the plane. I'm SO glad we went in! I made reservations for 3 at 7:30PM and were seated once our entire party had arrived. The restaurant was surprisingly busy at 7:30 on a Wednesday. So busy in fact that walk-ins were waiting around 2 hours for a table. If you can make reservations, that is highly recommended to avoid the longer wait times. After being seated, we were greeted immediately and asked for drink orders. Our waiter was very attentive and even recommended a few dishes when I was stuck between three - crab cake, salmon or thyme chicken. Based on our waiter's recommendation, I went with the chicken. For the price, it was pretty bland and not something that I would order again. The best thing we ordered was the cornbread appetizer. But even that was a underwhelming. Also, the restaurant was very loud. I had difficulty hearing the people at my table, which took away from the experience of connecting with my party. Between the wait time, food and noise level, I probably won't be back to Founding Farmers again. read more

Came here on a Wednesday evening and it was packed! Luckily my friend was able to make a reservation because if not we probably would've had to wait. The inside has lots of seating options and the atmosphere is nice. Very lively and clean inside. The menu has lots of options for fun drinks and good food from sandwiches to salads to lots of different entrees. My friend and I split the crab dip and it was so warm and cheesy and delicious! I loved it! I then ordered the poke salad and it was also good. A little small but I left a good amount full with the appetizer. The salad felt very fresh with good ingredients. I had a lovely meal! We shared the french toast and he had the southwest scramble while I had the pastrami hash. I ordered coffee and it was super strong! He was pretty disappointed in his scramble. The dish in general was cold but the jalepeno tasted as if it came right out of the fridge he was also sad there was no protein and found the random strips of tortillas to be unnecessary. This place is overrated. Before going to DC, I read on Reddit that many people don't actually recommend trying Founding Farmers. I thought there must be a reason it's so famous and popular, since it's close to where we stayed, we decided to try it and be my own judge. Each location's menu is slightly different, this location does not have buffet brunch. We also went to another two popular restaurants, Succotash and Pisco y Nazca, so we learned to make reservations at these popular places. Our reservation for Founding Farmers was 12:45pm, got there around 12:30pm, it was packed as expected. The host checked us in and told us to wait, so we checked out the Western Market next door to kill time. When we came back and waited for few minutes, we were seated just on time. Our waitress was busy but polite. We got the farmhouse platter and chicken fried steak and waffles. We were not impressed by either dish we got. We did like the corns, coleslaw and string beans, but the stars of the dishes were mediocre. Maybe we didn't order the right dish, but I don't think it's worth the wait. read more

One of my favorite breakfast places in the city. Sooo delicious. Our server was Edgar and he was awesome.

Breakfast was just ok. I ordered the Chef Joe's Original scramble with cheesy grits and an English muffin and an Aztec latte. It wasn't bad but it wasn't superb either. I got the breakfast tacos to go for my bf and he seemed to enjoy them. Other reviewers rave about their lunch/dinner - I'll have to try that on my next visit to DC. Sidenote: I had no issues getting a table for 1 on a late Monday morning. It's a different story on weekends - we attempted to go on a Saturday around 11 am and it was absolutely packed.
