Brussel Sprouts, Herb Fries, Chicken Matzo Ball Soup

We made reservations to Friedman's before seeing 'Project Hail Mary'. The food was superb. The service was impeccable. I ordered an old fashioned and was recommended to try another whiskey/bourbon drink and it was amazing. We both ordered a half soup and half sandwich. The sandwiches were great and the matzah ball soup was terrific. We started with veggie dumpling and they were soooooo good. .

Came here for breakfast one morning while visiting NYC, it was a convenient option because it was walking distance from where we were staying, and they were open on a holiday. They had a combined breakfast and lunch menu as well as a separate brunch menu. We ordered the Nova Benny from the breakfast and steak sandwich from the brunch menu to share. Both items were good, but the steak sandwich was pretty messy and hard to share. Someone in the group got the Lemon Ricotta Pancakes, which were my favorite thing I tried there. Service was friendly from the moment we walked in. Even though it was pretty busy, we were able to get a seat immediately.

Service is excellent here. We were greeted and seated right away. Very cute modern decor. Upscale deli vibe. Our server was very knowledgeable about the menu and made sure to go over any allergens with us as we ordered. I ordered a pastrami sandwich that came on rye with spicy brown mustard. The pastrami was very lean and tender. My stepson ordered a kids burger that he enjoyed very much. My husband got the fish and chips - His only complaint was that he wished there were 2 pieces of fish, but otherwise enjoyed it. Great experience between museums and Central Park.

This place is great. It has great ambience. Scott's great energy. It's got great sales definitely a place. I would go to with Friends to do computer work. It's wonderful. The service is super fast. They're super friendly and the food is always delicious. Definitely a go to place for daytime and even an early dinner!

Great place - service was good, place is clean, wait was short, manager helping out - and the food was delicious. Stopped in on a Saturday morning. Only 2 of us but still a 30 min wait, it went quick. I had the huevos rancheros with scrambled eggs. It comes on 2 tostados, so no need for toast, and all the flavors melded together so nicely with a little crunch. Coffee was hot and Carson gave me a cup to go too. We would stop back!

Found this place just walking by and it immediately pulled me in. The space looks great and has that warm, comfortable feel that makes you want to sit down and stay awhile. The service started off friendly, and the menu had a lot going for it. The maple bacon old fashioned was unbelievable, and the salad was just as impressive. There was one hiccup. Someone on staff told us we had to clear the table because it was "reserved," even though we'd only been there about 45 minutes. It was a ridiculous thing to say and it derailed the experience fast. I spoke with the manager and he handled the situation well and addressed the person who said it, but honestly, a small comp would've gone a long way in smoothing it over. Still, once that got sorted out, the meal got back on track. The food was very good, the vibe was great, and I'd come back.

We were craving some comfort food so decided to walk-in for brunch without reservations on a Saturday. The restaurant is pretty big, so even in the busy Times Sq. area we managed to get a table within 15 minutes. Drop coffee ($6), Chicken Chilaquiles ($24), Grilled Cheese ($24), and Blueberry Pancakes ($21) is what our order consisted of. Food overall was inline with expectations, although paying $24 for grilled cheese felt a bit too much. Portion sizes were perfect and service was really quick. Food arrived within 10 minutes of placing our order. Noise levels on the lower end and was easy to have conversation. Friendly staff who ensured we had an overall pleasant experience!

lunch special - Friedmans Club and Tomato Soup
    Irene C.

Honestly the food was so mid and looks much better than it tasted. I would dine here if I was only there for the ambiance and vibes. The fried chicken sandwich was mostly batter and was so overly deep fried that it was hard to eat and dry. The french toast lacked flavor and was mushy. The spinach and artichoke dip also lacked flavor and the friedmans club was dry. The best thing we ordered was the tomato soup which was actually good albeit not tasting like tomato soup haha (more like pasta vodka sauce).

French Toast with fruit compote, maple syrup and strawberry topping ( delivery style)
    Alan B.

Several reviewers had high praise for their French Toast with different condiments. With that being said I was excited to try one of my favorite staples ( it is for me) and see how it compared to my all time favorite at Zabars. First the good, a very generous portion of very thick sliced crusted challah and nice fruit condiments was delivered with real maple syrup; not the cheap corn syrup. Now the con, unlike Zabars that marinate their French Toast for hours it seems Friedman's gives it the one quick dip and the batter never saturates the thick challah bread enough to give you the taste of anything but bread. There is a need for lots of maple syrup to get some flavor when eating. I assume they added vanilla and other ingredients to the batter but you would never know from this experience. I think other customers ordered toppings on their French toast and that seemed to satisfy them or I just got an order that was rushed through the kitchen. I would like to give them another chance but it is pricey for a fairly tasteless French Toast, even one that looks great.

The quality of the food (un)fortunately makes up for the service. We were looking for a lowkey brunch spot in the UWS and called ahead to receive a "You're in luck" response which felt like one of those "You're the chosen one"/"We will open the gates to you" vibes, which I'll gladly take. We ordered: Sesame Salmon Salad Salmon Burger One thing that really grinds my gear about certain establishments is the flexibility, or rather the lack of flexibility to meet someone halfway or at least be understanding. We aren't the biggest fan of beets and they'd probably go to a waste, untouched in the salad so I inquired if they could be replaced with eggs. A general note, but sometimes people want a more robust salad base instead of kale/arugula so I requested a substitute of romaine. From my two minimal requests, I got the vibe that this easily threw our server's flow off-maybe saying we were allergic would've led to more empathy? Even with this odd patch in our order process, the food was really fresh and light (in a good way where you feel well nourished and not hungry for more). We actually ordered salmon in two different forms and the salad had more umami whereas the burger faired a bit too dry-the norm for burgers and needed something in the patty to make it more moist besides the sauce as a side lifeline. I'd come back but probably during a less busy time, continue ordering from their savory menu as I get the sense that this is more of their specialty, and would definitely recommend calling ahead if you want to be efficient.

This place is the best!!! Came with a party of 8 on a Saturday morning. Some of had to find parking for a van(impossible in NY) so we took longer than expected. They served all of and help our spot even though there was a line forming. My mom is celiac so it was super important to have somewhere safe to eat. However, EVERYONE enjoyed their meal. The food was absolutely delicious. Not just for GF food but in general. The service was top tier our server went above and beyond with a smile the whole time. I would absolutely god back to this place.

Being gluten free is hard but not here! They have such a large selection of gluten free options and their espresso is also quite good. I recommend the GF French toast!

Farm Egg Omelette, Herb Fries, Bagel and bacon
    Celena C.

I came here Saturday morning and tried the Farm Egg Omelette and Herb Fries. Everything was good and well-seasoned (not too salty or bland), but some things could've been cooked more. I don't know if it was because of the timing (we were seated right as they were opening) and/or they were rushing with orders. For the Farm Egg Omelette, the market vegetables in the omelette were just broccoli and mushrooms. I personally would've liked the broccoli chunks to have been cooked more so that they weren't so crunchy. The potato hash on the side was seasoned well, but it also could've been cooked through more. It was a good, filling portion though, with the 2 slices of toast (choice of rye, whole wheat, white, or sourdough), avocado, 3-egg omelette, and small side of potato hash. The herb fries weren't that good. They were on the raw side and were pretty tasteless. Overall, the meal wasn't bad. Ambiance is cozy, and service is great. Wouldn't be opposed to returning!

We reserved for a quick bite at Redeye Grill before catching Dog Day Afternoon on Broadway, but as soon as we walked up, some bouncer told us they were closed for a private wedding reception. We were dazed and confused because how was I able to reserve online? But the real plot twist was that it ended up being the best thing that happened. We actually stumbled into Tanner Smith's thinking it'd be the typical, boring bar-food spot. Nope. They first sat us at a hi-top by the door, but that wasn't our vibe, so we grabbed seats at the bar instead. Best decision. Our bartender, Josiah, was absolutely killing it. The buttermilk tenders is supposed to come with pickled shallots and marinated green beans. We didn't get the pickled shallots or the marinated green beans, which was a shame. The chicken tenders by themselves didn't have much flavor. It also is unfortunate paying $17 for what was considered a small plate and just getting the chicken tenders. The Asian-sesame wings were okay. Also, didn't have much flavor and weren't that impressive. There was also still hair on some of the pieces of chicken, so the chicken could have been cleaned better. They have fries and hand cut fries. The regular fries were soggy. Should have went with the hand cut fries. The tater tots were okay. I was told that the chicken sandwich was good. It came with a little side of rustic chips. I would not come back for the food but I would possibly go back to try a drink if I was in the area. The drink menu looked pretty good.

I arrived in 2008 with very little, and when Graydon Carter revived the restaurant in 2009, I was beginning a rise of my own, first at a large global bank and then, to my astonishment, at one of the city's most powerful investment firms. The suits were daily, the walls were gold, and the pressure was so consuming that even success could feel like a form of attrition. After a few years, I moved to a smaller firm with Southern roots, where the culture was more humane, the work gave me greater autonomy, and I produced some of the strongest results of my career, even within an industry still governed by fear, greed, and status. Inside, the red booths, low lighting, generous spacing, and hand-painted monkey murals made lunch feel ceremonial without becoming stiff. The room was timeless and handsome, with polished service, quality food, and the subtle assurance of a place where you could be proud to bring someone important. I especially remember sitting in one of those booths with two mentors, each only a few years older than I was and therefore close enough in vintage to feel relatable, trustworthy, and genuinely within reach. One had entered my life after I left the larger firm and helped me understand an earlier chapter that had also ended abruptly and, at the time, felt deeply unfair; the other had guided me through the smaller firm where I finally found a more sustainable way to work. Over that long lunch, I introduced them, we discussed several promising ideas, and for a moment my career seemed to have reached the point where relationships, experience, and opportunity were finally converging. One of those ideas consumed an extraordinary amount of my time and energy, and I believed it might become the foundation of my next chapter. Instead, the arrangement eventually turned on me, the role I thought I had earned never materialized, and the business itself sputtered. My professional life, financial footing, and pride all collapsed just as COVID was beginning. Then Monkey Bar closed in 2020, which made the ending feel almost unnervingly complete: the restaurant, the city, and the version of myself built around New York finance all went dark at once. For years, I experienced that ending as devastating and unfair; now I can see it as wisdom delivered through an unnecessarily rough process. The restaurant's later revival by a Chicago hospitality group feels fitting because it still honors tradition and ceremony while allowing the old forms to evolve into something healthier, looser, and more current. I have not been back since that lunch, but a return now would feel like visiting the museum of my past, not reclaiming a life that asked too much, gave too little, and finally lost its hold on me. Even now, I remember Monkey Bar as a great Midtown lunch in a memorable room, surrounded by the residue of old ambitions and the gratitude of having survived them. The cocktails were sharp, the service was impeccable, and the dining room carried that glamorous old New York energy without feeling trapped by it. I remain deeply fond of the place, partly for what it was and partly for what it witnessed. Some restaurants become attached to a chapter of your life, and Monkey Bar holds mine with unusual grace.

It featured a crispy, sugar-glazed exterior and a soft, chewy interior, topped with truffle cheese and served with a truffle butter dip; the pairing was superb, and it tasted great both on its own and with the dip. For the main course, I ordered the miso-glazed black cod. The flavor was flawless, and while the portion was small (which was acceptable), the pool of broth accompanying it was completely unnecessary; it was inedibly salty, so what was the point of serving it? After finishing the fish, I was left with a plate full of broth, rendering the plate unusable. Plus, it was overpriced; for this dish, you're better off going to Strip House Strip House remains the undisputed king of this dish in New York. A friend ordered the chicken parmesan. It was just average. Another friend ordered the short rib stroganoff. The flavor was decent, but it was far too rich and heavy. As someone whose palate is split 50/50 between Western and Chinese cuisine, I could manage only five bites at most. If you have a palate that prefers 100% Chinese food, proceed with caution on this dish. Friends ordered sides of mac & cheese and mashed potatoes. These are dishes originally meant for low-income Americans to fill up on cheaply; there's no limit to how good they can be, but also no floor to how bad they can get. Both were on par with the average quality found in upscale restaurants. Honestly, these are two dishes I would never order myself. To sum up: the atmosphere was great. It's also hard to get a reservation; the place was packed when we had lunch at 2 PM. Aside from that monkey bread, I didn't feel like anything else justified the price or offered something you couldn't find elsewhere. I don't quite get the hype. Perhaps I just didn't order the right dishes; maybe next time I'll try the burger and the steak.

We were already inside MOMA and entered via the inside entrance with a guard and a huge door. Since we arrived at 5pm when they opened we were led to a seated waiting area and provided cold water (a 100F day) and a smaller drink menu. Within a few minutes the main dining room was ready for us and we were led to a three quarter moon seat with a table facing the MOMA outdoor sculpture garden. This room was glorious with its high ceiling and cobalt blue paint and an impressive massive floral arrangements. There were plenty of museum visitors still outside wandering about in the sculpture garden. Each and every staff were wonderful in their friendly welcoming stance and conversations. Having perused their voluminous wine selection online ahead of time (an excellent thing to do ahead of time to avoid last minute decisions) we placed our wine order with the sommelier. Prior to ordering we were informed that both of us had to order the same menu but that we had the option to sub and add on from the expansive menu--which we did with the eggs on eggs on eggs dish, as well as my choice of the lamb. Their signature dish--Eggs on eggs on eggs: a must have to add on this special course with caviar ($50/order). The dish is small, precious and very rich and was positively impressionable. That's the dish I go away with thinking about the restaurant. It came with a stick of toasted brioche to sop up the runny yolk and the caviar (which was neither fishy or salty). I would note the dish was served with caviar spoon. Staff knew enough that after we started eating this they brought an extra set of two more buttered toast sticks. Paired with our all Pinot champagne it was a magical combo. This is the kind of patron mind reading that differentiated a Michelin star restaurant. As the executive chef described the dish: "At the bottom of the bowl is a fried egg sauce, and is broken with a dill oil; second egg is a poached egg yolk (poached in a saline solution just so they are warmed through...we want the yolk to spill through the sauce...). We finish this dish with pickled shallots and more fresh dill for acidity and freshness, and drop a huge spoonful of caviar on top." The amuse was a great way to start especially with the pairing of our champagne. In lieu of the halibut in the Impressions menu I added the lamb from the other menu. Although it was only one piece in the rack of lamb it was terrific with the crunchy maitake mushroom and tasty sauce. The sommelier was excellent and professional without being pretentious -- as well as every single staff that greeted us and served us along the way. THIS Is what one should expect from a two star Michelin restaurant. I tasted the halibut from my wife and it seemed to be slightly under seasoned, though it had a decent sear. Service was perfection. They did not disappoint and I will be back!

Thanks to my fellow Yelpers, I was lead to this great spot for a late dinner and cocktails on a Friday night. The hostess was really friendly and quicky sat us at a two seater near the bar, which we appreciated. The ambiance was light and friendly and they even had a DJ playing all the good jams! I think I danced a bit, (definitely liquid courage). The DJ read the room and created a fun ambiance. The waitress came over a few minutes later and quickly took our drink and meal order. We ordered the Tuna Crispy Rice ( Yum), Guinness Wager Sliders (Nom Nom), Korean Chicken Boas (My Favorite!) and Carnitas Tacos.....I'm embarrassed to admit that we cleaned our plates like a couple of savages. Bartley Dunnes is a great choice to come solo, meet up with friends or come as a group of no more than 4, unless you make a reservation. They have a second floor that I unfortunately didn't get a chance to check out, so I can't write about that. However, I did see people coming and going straight up. I'll be back!

They have a great happy hour running from open until 8 PM, including $6 beers and $8 cocktails, which is a great deal for the area. ordered the Bartleys Spritz (Aperol Spritz) and a Tequila Mule. We sat at the bar, which runs about half the length of the space, and there were also plenty of tables throughout. The back section of the bar feels a bit separated from the main entrance area. There are some TVs throughout, and everything inside seemed fairly new and well maintained. It was not very crowded on a Tuesday early evening, so service was quick and the staff was very friendly. We did not order food this time, but everything coming out of the kitchen looked and smelled great. Overall, I would definitely recommend this spot for happy hour drinks in the MoMA/Midtown West area.
